BOOTLEGGING AS CREATIVE PRACTICE UNLICENSED

Over the last few decades the term ‘bootlegging’—a practice once relegated to smugglers and copyright infringers— has become understood as a creative act. Debates about homage, appropriation, and theft that are common in the art world, are now being held in the spheres of corporate branding, social media, and the creative industry as a whole. Today, bootlegging has become fetishized as an aesthetic in and of itself, influencing everything from underground record labels to DIY T-shirts, publishing ideologies, to acts of high fashion détournement. UNLICENSED contains twenty-one interviews with a range of creative practitioners on the topic of bootlegging. The conversations in UNLICENSED investigate bootlegging’s creative and critical potential, and explore new ways bootlegging can be deployed in order to thrive as an impactful cultural force.

to synthesize two seemingly contrasting forces within modernism: Futurism and Fluxus. In fact, a lot of our work revolves around this theme, trying to reflect on the plurality within modernism, treating it not as a static monolithic movement but, rather, as a maelstrom of conflicting accents and dialects. (Actually, in the poster, we also referred to yet another strand of modernism: post-punk. After all, Zang Tumb Tumb was also the record label of Frankie Goes to Hollywood—but that’s another story, for another time). A couple of years later, we were invited to transform this poster into a mural, during the group exhibition ‘Ecstatic Alphabets / Heaps of Language’ (MoMA, 2012).

A very similar project (attempting to synthesize two seemingly opposite strands of modernism) can be found in Dark Side of the Bauhaus (2003), a series of three record sleeves in which we referred to both the famous Pink Floyd album cover (originally designed by Hipgnosis in 1973), and the historical “square/triangle/circle” emblem of the Bauhaus school. Again, a way to pay tribute to two of our main influences, early modernism and psychedelic pop culture. What’s interesting about Dark Side of the Bauhaus is the fact that a couple of years later, our friend Mark Owens (of Life of the Mind) bootlegged this bootleg—by giving the Germs’ iconic G.I. sleeve the Bauhaus treatment as well (for his 2006 essay “Graphics Incognito”), thus creating a sort of “meta-bootleg.”

One last example we would like to mention is the facsimile we created in 2011, reproducing the first issue of Provo (originally published in 1965), a facsimile that was part of ‘Two or Three Things I

CHRISTINE SCHRANZ (ED.) is Head of Research at the Institute

Contemporary Design Practices (ICDP) of FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel. In this role, she is responsible for the development of research across multiple institutes. Her research interests include common-based design and the changing role of (female) designers in the wake of digitalization.

The scarcity of resources, climate change, and the digitalization of everyday life are fuelling the economy of swapping, sharing, and lending—all of which are in some way linked to a culture of commoning. In this context, we understand commons as community-based processes that use, collectively manage, and organize generally accessible resources—referring to both goods and knowledge. Commons in Design explores the meaning and impact of commons—especially knowledge-based peer commons—and acts of commoning in design. It discusses networked, participatory, and open procedures based on the commons and commoning, testing models that negotiate the use of commons within design processes. In doing so, it critically engages with questions regarding designers’ positionings, everyday practices, self-understandings, ways of working, and approaches to education.

Towards Home / ᐊᖏᕐᕋᒧᑦ / Ruovttu Guvlui, an Indigenous-led publication, explores how Inuit, Sámi, and other communities across the Arctic are creating self-determined spaces. It is informed by the perspectives of a group of Inuit, Sámi, and settler co-editors who advocate norther Indigenous forms of sovereignty shaped by an understanding of the land as home. The project emphasizes caring for and living on the land as a way of being, and celebrates practices of spacemaking and placemaking that empower Indigenous communities. It contains essays, artworks, photographs, personal narratives, and other forms that express Indigenous notions of home, land, future, kinship, design, and memory.

LET’S BECOME FUNGAL!

MYCELIUM TEACHINGS AND THE ARTS

Indigenous wisdom keepers, artists, curators, feminists and mycologists twelve inspirational lessons in fungal activism inspiration for artists, collectives, organizations, educators, policy-makers, curators, urbanists, gardeners, activists, farmers, and many others

There is a growing interest in fungi and mycelium as a material, the ever-branching connecting threads of the fungal world. The entanglements and how this rhizomatic network functions is not just a fascinating ecological system and material, but carries a profound usefulness as a metaphor for our potential new systems, ways of thinking and behaviors.

Let’s Become Fungal! takes its inspiration from the world of art and mycology and shares a range of innovative and Indigenous practices from Latin America and the Caribbean that are rooted in multispecies collaboration, symbiosis, alliances, non-monetary resource exchange, decentralization, bottom-up methods and mutual dependency.

AUTHOR Hans Teerds

HANS TEERDS is architect en stedenbouwkundige. Hij is werkzaam als senior docent en onderzoeker bij de leerstoel voor geschiedenis en theorie van de stedenbouw aan de ETH in Zürich.

SMOOTH CITY

In cities around the world a new urban condition is spreading rapidly: an ever-increasing push for ‘perfection’, efficiency and control and the active eradication of any aberration, friction or alternative. The smooth city with its sanitized spaces and new technologies compresses urban life into a seamless experience. While the demand for safe, clean, and well-functioning urban environments is understandable, the rise of the smooth city hardly leaves space for anything that is experimental, non-normative, transgressive or otherwise out of tune.

FRICTION AND RAWNESS
The City as a System advocates a change of perspective in the study of the urban environment. It posits that designers who wish to truly improve the functioning of the city and solve tricky urban problems should conduct thorough research into underlying systems, into the operation, use, and performance of the urban fabric. The authors see this as the metabolism of the city, a living organism, whose interlinked workings play a crucial role in the transition towards a more sustainable living environment.

BOUWEN OP HET CULTUREEL ‘GEMEEN’

PASSIVITY PASSIVITEIT

BETWEEN INDIFFERENCE AND PACIFISM

TUSSEN ONVERSCHILLIGHEID EN PACIFISME

‘A pacifist is a rare beast in a bomb shelter.’ The war in Ukraine challenged our idea of pacifism. Should Europe take up arms or not? Can it ease its conscience only with humanitarian aid? Isn’t Europe’s attitude towards the war mainly driven by economic motives? In Passivity, Ukrainian art curator Alexandra Tryanova and Belgian sociologist Pascal Gielen engage in a dialogue about this. In doing so, they not only talk about the current political situation, but also look at themselves; at their own fears and privileges. What is passivity in our own daily doings? When does pacifism turn into resignation?

Radical Fashion Exercises contains a copious collection of bottom-up activities, prompts, and workshops designed by contributors (from all around the globe), who explore fashion in an expanded field. Designers, curators, artists, educators, fashion practitioners, DIY home sewers, students, and other creatives responded to the book’s open call with contributions that challenge how to practice fashion and reflect on its systems, politics and economics. The exercises collected in this book embrace interdisciplinarity, experimentation, and aesthetics and widen fashion’s horizons as a medium for expression, embodiment and sociality.

Radical Fashion Exercises assembles methods for learning and practicing fashion in meaningful, radical and responsible ways. The book is an inspiring tool for design students, designers, writers, and practitioners of diverse disciplines to challenge fashion as a commodity and polluting structure in these times of uncertainty and upheaval.

SENSING EARTH

CULTURAL QUESTS ACROSS A HEATED GLOBE

Artists and cultural initiatives need circulation to be able to exchange ideas and create meaningful connections. Traveling and visiting international exhibitions are part of that. But this globalized system contributes largely to the ecological decay of the planet. In this book various artists/authors look for entrances to address this double bind, and explore possible ways out. They state that technology and science are not enough to solve the ecological issues, but that these should also be approached from the perspective of culture, aesthetics and politics. Our senses, cultural exchange and creative efforts can provide ways to avoid physical, emotional, intellectual and ecological ‘overheating’.

SEVEN LOGICS OF SCULPTURE

ENCOUNTERING OBJECTS THROUGH THE SENSES

opens up new ways of looking at, understanding, and appreciating sculpture places the medium at the heart of art’s experience; how sculpture can be shaped, assembled, encountered, seen and embodied

Sculpture as a specific medium is rarely investigated within a deeply cultural, philosophical context. In order to assess contemporary art practices, one should have a better understanding of the logics that are at work within sculpture as a medium, and how they differ from other art forms. This book explores ‘seven logics’ of sculpture, with a contemporary analytical approach, drawing from literature, philosophy, psycho-analysis, and semiotics. It relates to aspects such as the senses, the skin, the body, objecthood, narrative dynamics, the shaping of space, fragmentation, and montage.
