CREST-VOLAND CHURCH The church of Crest-Voland, which is dedicated to the Nativity of Our Lady, was built between 1863 and 1866 on the site of the old 16th century church. Open every day from 8:00am to 7:00pm.

FLUMET CHURCH Saint Théodule church in Flumet was rebuilt in 1682 after the the original 13th C church was destroyed by fire. Belltower in the shape of a medieval tower, unusual design, baroque altars... Open from 8:30am to 6:00pm approximately (door on the side of the church).

CLIMBING SITE IN FLUMET : LA CARRIÈRE. 4 new routes will open in May 2018, in addition to the 6 existing routes for experienced climbers and the kids’ zone for beginners. Climbing enthusiasts can practise on a 20m-long traverse or even trial night-time climbing on the floodlit cliff. Situated on the outskirts of Flumet, in the direction of Megève. More info on p 19.
Children can test their balancing skills on a “Surfy” (+ 4 years) whilst the littlest ones can have fun in the “see through caterpillar” (from 2 years).

Check out the battery-assisted bikes for hire, an eco-friendly type of travel which is accessible to all and provides a convivial way of enjoying the delights of the Val d’Arly. Choose between mountain or road version of the E-bikes to explore our villages’ fascinating sights and secret views, all without getting out of breath. Enjoy either mountain tracks or dedicated trails (road books are available from your local Tourist Office or from the bike hire shops). CHAIRLIFTS Take the chairlifts to avoid several hundred meters of uphill climb or to make the most of the walk or ride downhill. More information can be found on the individual villageresort pages.
MOUNTAIN BIKING There are 230 km of FFC-marked trails (Val d’Arly Site n°10) between the Col des Saisies and the Col des Aravis, with forest tracks, trails and alpine meadows all waiting to be explored. This includes 8 downhill itineraries that are accessible from the chair lifts, making them even more enjoyable. Val d’Arly mountain bike trail maps are on sale from the Tourist Offices at the price of 2.50€.
MOUNTAIN BIKE FUN PARKS These fun parks are definitely a great way to get into mountain biking, comprising zones that are either just for fun or for learning and improving (accompanied by an instructor). They provide the ideal safe environment for beginners or youngsters who are just getting started or as a warm-up before haring off down the other slopes. Free access in each village.
THE “TOUR DES SECRETS” This is a special circuit designed for battery-assisted bikes. A 45 km loop, with a 62 km version for mountain bikes, you will set off on little roads to discover some of Val d’Arly’s secret places. Along the itinerary, 32 places of interest have been chosen for their cultural value and the beauty of their panoramic views. Road-books are available from the Tourist Offices.
TOUR OF THE VAL D’ARLY BY MOUNTAIN BIKE OR ELECTRIC TREKKING BIKE Can be done over one, two or three days, on your own or accompanied by an instructor, using electric mountain bike (or cross-country mountain or endurance bikes). Uphill climbs over a change in altitude of 4343 m and downhills of 3844 m – Trail map available from the Tourist Offices. Accompaniment by cycle instructor: see p 27.

Worth checking out - the trails start out from Val d’Arly’s villages. Search for the signs and then punch your card as you go along the trail to solve a puzzle and work out the mystery word. Great for families or with friends (various levels of difficulty). Cards on sale from the Tourist Offices (0.50 € per trail).
It will give you the chance to take part in a whole load of different outdoor activities, use the chair lifts, hire a mountain bike, visit museums...
MUSEUM SPACE Coopérative Fruitière du Val d’Arly - Flumet Learn how Reblochon cheese is made. The co-operative opens its doors so that you can come and learn about its history, the territory it covers and its products, including the famous Reblochon. For more info on the museum space and shop: see p 20. Get involved in the first stages of transforming milk into cheese, from the point this precious liquid is poured into the cauldron to when the curds are pressed. Once a week during July and August. You will be sent a voucher when you book your holiday with which you can claim the Pass Vacances at one of the local Tourist Offices. The booklet contains Euroblochons (valued between 1€ and 2.50€) up to a total value of 50€. You can then use them as money with the participating providers.
ANIMAL TRAIL “ANIMAL HIDE N’SEEK” Situated on the slopes above Flumet, the animal trail at Lac des Evettes is a great introduction for both children and adults to the wildlife that can be found in the mountains. During a ramble that manages to be entertaining and educational at the same time, the trail is dotted with animal silhouettes which provide fun and interesting facts about mountain culture – an enriching experience for young and old explorers alike. Plus, this summer, two more silhouettes to see. From Les Evettes, this 2 km route is accessible to everyone. Plan on 40 minutes to do the whole tour.
L’EMPREINTE DES GRANDES ALPES L’Empreinte des Grandes Alpes is a smartphone app which offers you an amazing interactive way of exploring places of interest along the legendary Route des Grandes Alpes. It features 360° panoramic views in augmented reality, audio and video trails, photo galleries, quizzes and sketches for you to enjoy with family and friends. The app can be downloaded free of charge on iOS and Android devices (WiFi is available in your local Tourist Office). An initiative from the Communautés Communes du Beaufortain et du Val d’Arly.

Since 2006, the Val d’Arly is part of the Pays d’Art et d’Histoire des Hautes Vallées de Savoie, along with the Maurienne, Tarentaise and Beaufortain valleys.
The Pays d’Art et d’Histoire des Hautes Vallées de Savoie is managed by the Fondation pour l’Action Culturelle Internationale en Montagne (Fondation FACIM). With support from the Savoie Conseil Général, its mission is to enhance Savoie’s heritage. It also has the job of encouraging new projects in the area. Staffed by 30 or so official guides, it provides a year round cultural programme in the Val d’Arly.
It is a nationwide label, awarded by the Ministère de la Culture, which pledges a standard of quality, interest and enhancement of cultural heritage. The label marks the Valley’s commitment to knowledge, conservation, mediation and architectural enhancement of the local environment. All the elements of Val d’Arly’s identity are brought together in this process of cultural, social and economic development. The awareness of local residents of their own environment is an important part of the process. The label aims to give locals ownership of their heritage. At the same time, involving younger people should help with the transmission of this heritage to future generations. Through the enhancement of cultural sites and architecture, a more diverse and rich cultural offer is available to visiting tourists. Museums, churches, folk groups: see each resort’s “visits” page.
