What is

?

Girl PowHER is a program of the Vail Valley Foudation's YouthPower365. The goal of Girl PowHER is to inspire young women to become the best version of themselves by empowering them to recognize and act upon their strengths through their passions, and to identify and work through areas of personal challenge.

It was founded in 2010 with the help of Colorado native Amanda Precourt and the Women’s Foundation of Colorado. Girl PowHER focuses on empowering young women with the premise that empowerment is being fully connected to yourself, and that your confident self is your best self.

Each week girls participate in different meaningful activities led by trained, sensitive and involved instructors, designed to challenge, empower, and encourage the girls socially, academically, and physically. These activities may include team building, critical thinking, and problem-solving. There are also many opportunities for adventure enrichments such as camping, archery, snowshoeing, hiking, biking, and yurt trips.

Participants in Girl PowHER are encouraged to TRY NEW THINGS, to step outside of their comfort zones, and begin to figure out where their power comes from and how to create it for and within themselves. Current and past Girl PowHER participants report having a strong sense of self.

Program Photos Empowerment Art Project Girl PowHER students created reminder rocks with their own self-empowerment message in their own unique style.

Empowerment Bulletin Board Gypsum Creek Middle School girls took time to share messages of encouragement and empowerment during Valentines week with their school.

HER Film Camp This fall, Girl PowHER partnered with HER Film Camp to provide students an opportunity to learn about cinematography and video production.

Why

?

It is not just school but life experiences that inspire, enrich, and support us. This year, more than ever, our Eagle Valley students need our support. The girls of today need love, guidance, deep friendships, respectable limits, and time to figure out life on their own terms.

Through Girl PowHER they become empowered by other girls also learning to become true to themselves as they discover who they are.

Middle and high school girls often face hard issues and many times they are seen as needing help. This is vitally important and yet these girls can also help others. Mentors and instructors work closely with the girls to have them realize their own power by providing opportunities within the community for volunteering and service-learning.

Through the program girls will be able to say: I am confident, I am capable, I take pride in who I am.

As with all YouthPower365 Programs, educational support is a priority in all Girl PowHER programs. In addition to creating physical and social/emotional well-being, we hope to increase the rate of high school graduation as well as to support the increase the number of young women seeking higher education in Eagle County.

Skate Park Berry Creek Middle School girls teamed up with Duchess Ride for an afterschool skateboarding clinic and learned the mechanics and strength behind the sport of skateboarding.

TRIO Equine Therapy This spring, Girl PowHER partnered with TRIO Equine Therapy to provide students with an informative session on equine therapy paired with leadership development activities.

Physics & Teamwork Activity Throughout the year, Girl PowHER provides meaningful and educational activities and sessions afterschool designed to build confidence, teamwork, and cognitive skills.
