P altrv winter conditions prevailed at Amateur foothail venues again over the weekend as six team s played their parting piece of football for season 1997, while the remaining four attempted to fine tune their engines in the lead-up to September action. Well, make that five teams, because throughout the afternoon, La Salle battled to overcome St Bernards in the hope that Old Haileybury might slip up at home to Trinity and thus vacate fourth spot .

Ultimately, the Bloods did vacate fourth - moving ahead to third after seeing off Trinity, and leaving fourth spot to Collegians, whose indifferent form continued at the weekend with a 39 point defeat to Old Scotch at Elsternvrick Park. Leigh Carlson must be concerned - after seemingly cruising for most of the season, the Lions have only just qualified - and the form they carry into today's first semi final clash with hlaileybury is but a shadow of their true potential. With the loser of today's match joining the alsorans for season 1997, is there time enough for the Lions to find their roar ?

While conditions at Elsternwick Park might best be described as trying, spare a thought for the hopelessly exposed souls at the Junction Oval - subject to a blowy gale and teeming rain again this week which marred the Redlegs' clash with Xaverians - at least from the premiers' point of view - as they lost by a goal . Nick Bourke would have preferred nothing better than to take some winning form into the fmals but Xavs finished up in top spot regardless, a healthy percentage break ahead of second-placed Scotch . The second semi-final between these two teams next week promises to be a beauty . Just 9 majors for the day from both sides with Dan Richardson kicking all four of Xavs' goals while experienced OM's campaigners Richard Webb and Cam Thompson helped the home side hang on for the win . A game out with a healthy percentage, the Redlegs will be ruing their draw with Haileybury a number of weeks back .

Another side left ruing will be De La Salle, whose poor start to the season ultimately crippled their belated effort to take part in September action . With Evans, Toohey and Jackson leading the way again last weekend . De La Salle should start season 1998 with fresh vigour and confidence in its playing personnel after turning around a season seemingly gone .

Their opponents last weekend, St Bernards, also have some optimism with which to view next year .

Nick Mitchell's return mid-season bolstered the side's confidence and added vigour to their attack while the likes of the Gollants, Comito and Perrett keep on coming .

University, too, will be looking to next year with 2

Grant Williams has proved to be an importan t component in the Blues' make-up and his role in their mid-seasc revival cannot be understated, but it is the likes Richard Furphy an d Paul Fairbank, prominent i the Blues win over Old Paradians last weekend, wt, drive the University engine.

Which leaves Paradians, and their grand fm; nemesis of 1996, Old Trinity, to relegation stakes ft season 1998 after contrasting season which finishe in the same place . Parade started brightly an notched up some early victories before tapering o while the T's, promising in the early rounds bt unable to notch up a win, lost confidence as the see son progressed . No doubt both teams will be mor than a handful in B-section next year.

PREVIEW If past encounters carry any bearing on today' game, expect the Lions to take this game by th scruff of the neck and shake the life out of a haples Haileybury. In both clashes this season, Collegian have got away to a good started and gone on to wt the game, with Christian Davidson's 7 goals playin, a big part in the round 4 win at Tucker Road . A 7 goa sharp shooter helped the Lions over the line on Jul 12, too, this time Drew Warne-Smith, who has estab lished himself as the Lions key forward target with ~ good return of 56 goals this year. Matt Armstrong Mark Seeeull an d Gary Phillips all played well tha day for the Bloods, particularly after quarter time, bu an 8 goal to 2 first quarter left the Bloods chasing tai all afternoon for a 38-point loss .

Of course, previous clashes between the two corn batants have absolutely no bearing on today's game except perhaps to give the Lions some confidence tha they can actually beat the Bloods . And don't thei need a shot of confidence, too after some ordinar} performances in recent weeks . Skipper Dann3 Thomson an d Matt Galbraith both return to thf Lions team this week, a double-pronged boost to the team's on-field leadership and strength in the mid• field and or. the ball . And the Lions might just have the edge on the ball, with Brett Jefferson in good form in recent weeks and the rugged Darren Peters expected to lift .

The Bloods' forward line is resourceful, rather than potent . Andre w Walden has distinguished himself around goals this year while Efstathiou, Morey and co . are more than capable of slotting through majors when they're most needed . The Lions too have a number of goalkickers in their midst, and the like s FOOTBALLER 1997

of yori Phillips and Scott Mollard will be on hand to ease the pressure on Warne-Smith . With Jeff Lemon, Tony Parkin, an d Gabe Deane-Johns all capable of running forward and kicking goals, the Lions' scoring potential seems ominous .

But `seems is the operative word. Ominous might be their potential, but ordinary has been their form - the Lions might struggle to find winning touch against a Bloods team which has shown plenty of resilience throughout the year . Chris Kraus, David Conne ll , Ash Hilton and Matt Armstrong have all been consistent performers in 1998 and will no doubt be desperate again today to prove Haileybury's knockers wrong . But I suspect the Lions might just find a touch of polish today, particularly if good conditions prevail, but expect the Bloods to go down valiantly with one mighty fight . Coll egians by 11 points.

High scores were certainly not the order of the day but two very keen tussles took place at Oak Park and Chelsworth Park with the fourth place on the ladder up for grabs . SKOBS' fightback against Old Ivanhoe put an end to the finals hopes of Therry Penola who did not help their own cause by falling at the last hurdle when Ivanhoe arrived to spoil things . As expected Ormond, Old Brighton an d St Kilda/South Caulfield were the other winners in a round which had no effect on relegation and which left the four unchanged . In the 'Ressies' Therry Penola somewhat compensated by its arrival into fourth place at the expense of SOB .

There are only five of the ten clubs in this section taking part in finals action .

REVIEW Old Ivanhoe continued its excellent second half o f the season by going all the way with SKOBS and almost winning the day after appearing to take control of the match in the second quarter . The ruck dual between Marcus Olive (SKOBS) and Jarrod Weddle (Old Ivanhoe) was a magnificent encounter whilst defender Bernie Marusic and leading goalkicker Lachie McLean engaged in a great battle with the SKOBS' youngster doing a fine job . Saturday was Kevin McLean's farewell match after 13 years at the helm at Old Ivanhoe . I'm sure everyone in Amateur footy will congratulate Kevin on his contribution to his club and to the VAFA . Enjoy your golf Kevin.

Ormond were never really in strife against Mazenod who could not get sufficient use of the ball from the centre and again relied on its defence to hold Ormond to a reasonable score . A disappointing season for the Nodders whilst the Monds appear to be going along nicely at the business end of proceedings .

Ban yule could not withstand the early effort of St Kilda South Caulfield an d once againy came away without the bacon. On the other hand the Saints notched up the fourth win for 1997 as both clubs bid this Section farewell and look forward to better results in C Section in 1998 .

Old Brighton maintained its top position and certainly let MHSOB and other hopefuls know that it regards itself as top dog and intends to go all the way .

The High boys on the other hand journeyed home confident of turning the tables on the spacious Elsternwick Park on September 6 .

At Oak Park Ivanhoe decided to finish 1997 on a high and ensure that Therry Penola was left without a chance of making fmals action . The Pies have had a great second half of the season and will now look to 4

1998 with much confidence after blooding many youngsters.

Therry on the othe r hand would be most disappointed particularly consid ering its pre-season confidence and last year's efforts Once again, enough runs were not scored in the earl, part of the season .

PREVIEW On the spacious Elsternwick Park Ormond take ; on the SKOBS . The score to this point is one all witl both sides losing the encounters on home soil during the season . Much will depend on the weather and th( state of the track . With dry conditions I expect thf SKOBS to take control . In the reserves Therry Penola's recent good form suggests it is on a roll however Old Brighton with much experience in key positions should win this one by 12 points .

don't know why but the rain and cold always manes to know where the finals are . It was freezing o n Saturday at the first semi-final, but the weather did not diminish the football at all. It was the type of game you would expect of a final, both teams never giving in and only a single kick separating the two combatants come the finals siren.

REVIEW FIRST SEMI FINAL MARCELLIN V. OLD R2ENTONIAN S In cold, wet conditions at Parkdale Oval, Marcellin came out of the rooms breathing fire, desperate to turn around the result two weeks earlier that saw them lose second spot when defeated by Old Mentonlans on their home ground. Eagles vice-captain Caffry set the mood early, throwing his weight around and helping his team control the proceedings in the first term . With the aid of a swirling breeze Marcellin kicked 4 goals to the Panther's one to be up by 18 points at the first change .

The Panthers again failed to fire in the second quarter, falling down across half fonvard where Stroud was presenting himself well, but did not have too many helpers, Acreman an d Bournon, two of the Panthers major goalkickers being well held by their opponents . Slattery was standing out for Marcellin providing run out of defence as well as having a lot of ball around the ground. The Eagles outscored the Panthers 2 goals to 1 in the second term to go into half time 29 points up .

The third term was when the match really started .

The Panthers moved Large into the ruck and he helped the Panthers to first use of the ball out in the middle as well as around the ground and his presence seemed to get Old Mentonians going . Stroud was taking more marks and the Panthers were starting to threaten . They kicked three goals to the Eagles one to narrow the lead to just 20 points with one term to play.

It was all or nothing for both teams in the final term, and the both played accordingly . The Eagles looked like they had things under control early, Cox an d Dineen keeping the ball out of the Panthers scoring zone . But after five minutes the Panthers got going . Acreman, having had no impact on the game in the first three quarters, kicked his only two goals, Stroud kicked one, and then Solley slotted one to put the Panthers a goal clear. But Marcellin responded and as the lead changed a couple of times through behinds, the crowd was on the edge of their collective seat . The play was hard, both teams trying desperately to force a score, but with not more than two minutes to go, Marcellin's Karavasilis managed to snap a goal from just outside the goal square and put the Eagles up by five points. Not long after, the siren blew, and the Eagles had progressed to the next round, reversing last year's straight sets exit from the finals .

For the Eagles, Cox L and Slattery were solid all day, whils t Caffry and Day made good contributions to their team win. For the Panthers, who just gave the Eagles to much of a start, outscoring them 7 goals to three in th second half, Stroud with three goals was good, as wa Solley an d Darren Murphy, and when he was on th ground, Large had a big impact on the game .

RESERVESFIRST SEW-FINAL, MARCELLIN V. MONASH BLUES This was a clash between last year's D and C sec lion reserves Premiers, Marcellin looking to defen their crown. Unfortunately though it was not to be . I an even affair, the game was won and lost in the secon term, Monash kicking 6 goals to none to take wha turned out to be an unassailable lead . Marcellin trie hard but failed to find anyone able to kick them goal ; and they now exit the finals series, their title defenc over.

PREVIEW SECOND SEMI-FINAL ,

ST BEDES MENTONE V. NORTH OLD BOYS This, like the semi-final, should prove to be a clos encounter, no more than three goals having separate these teams in both their encounters during the regu lar season. Particular notice was taken in their rouni 16 clash where the Tigers were up by 20 points in th third term before the NOB's ran over them to take th game . I doubt the Tigers will be as willing to surrende this week, a place in the Grand-Final, and 'B' grade a stake . But North Old Boys too would be keen to win, b get back into 'B' grade and prove their performances ii our section this year were not ones that can be repeat ed next year in 'B' .

North are a proven running side, their endurano and pace over the ground a key to their victories . Thei defence is also very solid, and their attack averaged ove 20 goals a game this season . The Tigers also average( over 20 goals a game and their endurance will also p1a, a part on the expanses at Sandringham Oval .

I think it will come down to whoevers mid-field i: able to take control . On a large ground first use of thi ball, and the ability to control the direction of play wil decide the winner.

I'm going for the Tigers.

t~ver it is a different story . St Bedes Mentone managed to go the entire season without a loss, the one blemish being achaz'acter building draw early in the season .

North Old Boys on the other hand lost five matches, some being to lowly teams, and they were unable to control the Tigers in both their encounters this season .

The Tigers have been the yardstick in reserves football this year, and I think that will continue today. )'m going for a Tigers double .

by Peter Kelly ': avi the day started and ended in drama . The on field results and display of sportsmanship and disciplined football by all four teams in atrocious conditions was a credit to themselves and in turn the Association . For two sides to lose by the narrowest of margins is disappointing for their supporters and has been said many times there unfortunately can only be one winner . Too the performance of Old Essendon, whose whole season has been mothballed in two weeks with losses to the seniors (knocking them from fourth) and now the reserves after last Saturday, I extend congratulations on consolidating in D Section and your efforts after promotion from E Section last season . To Parkside, whose chances of promotion back to 'C' are gone with their two point loss, you showed in the disappointment of defeat and the your season in tatters, a display of maturity and sportsmanship that many other clubs should take a leaf from. As they left the field they went to their Whitefriars opponents and the umpires and officials of the day shook hands and wandered to the rooms .

The shattered players sat in the rooms heads bowed surrounded by supporters and deathly silence . Their president spoke, softly at first, his voice affected by emotion but his words will ring in the minds of all present as a slow clap turned to a standing ovation for the efforts of players and coaching staff. Their sportsmanship after the game and display even in defeat extends the name and standing of our Association . To the days dramas when the Creswick Ambulance services ferried the only serious injury on the day to the doctors for surgery . There must be a better way to get a hair cut than attempt to use the serrated edge of a paper towel dispenser . Goal Umpires go to any length to be noticed and then the lazarous return to the goals by half time what an effort .

A reminder to all supporters that in the emotion of battle and support for your team, barracking and some abuse from over the fence is part of our game .

When the battle is over no supporters or officials are permitted to approach umpires at any stage . You have ruined a great day and tarnished your clubs name, spoiling the great efforts of your players and the officials of the day.

REVIEW OF LAST WEEKS 1ST SEMI FINAL RESERVE S

Old Essendon and Parkside were involved in a battle royal'e and as each quarter rolled by no one would confidently predict the outcome . Old Essendon seemed fitter, had a higher level of skill and were dour in defence holding Parkside scoreless in the first even though they had most of the play . On three occasions OEGS have moved the ball forward and converted .

Parkside continued to apply pressure at every contest holding OEGS to only one goal in the second but stil l 8

not able to get the major on the board . Parkside in it, third made some telling moves which saw their efforl finally rewarded as during the last half they levele the scores . With 10 minutes to play and the score leveled both sides tried desperately to get the ball ow the score line . A point to Parkside and the soundin siren finished a great game of Reserves footy whic will see the winner meeting today's loser at Parkdal next week. Parkside's best were Hoyne and Thorns with Dunabin an d Mafeud who each finished wit two goals .

SENIORS Nothing separated the Parkside and Whitefriar teams in an absolutely dour struggle for the ball wit : no player giving an inch . Whitefriars tried hard t dominate but the conditions brought their art( supremacy back to the field and Parkside were bette at ground level . Wasted opportunities saw both side struggle across their half forward lines and the usue winning players with both clubs held fairly well b their respective opponents . Parkside had thei chances to win and none more so than a shot at gor from directly in front which was badly needed an went begging in the last which leveled the scores wit] the resulting behind . Whitefriars forced the ball for ward and a loose ball in the goal square and ai attempt to kick it off the ground saw it slew througl for a point to give them a one point margin with ! minutes to go . Parkside worked hard and got the bal up forward but just couldn't get the ball over the line Whitefriars broke free and ran the ball forward with : shot at goal just failing to go through for full points Parkside again rallied and forced the ball forward an( were on their half forward flank when the sirer sounded ending a great game of hard slogging bu disciplined football. Two great goals one a great gral and goal in the second by Pasqualotto and the nini iron chip shot off the ground from the half forwar< flank by Parkside in the third were team lifters . Bes for the Friars in a well deserved win were Pasqualoto Bateman, Mike, Fedele, Reidy (2 goals) and Law Whilst the Devils Laursen at full back played well al day and Panjari and Inserra after half time McNamara finished with two goals.

Beaumaris will want Martin, Groves, galisbury, Easton an d McManus to produce all day , s OGS rely on Darcy, Neeld, Mithens, Edmonds and 'rilson to produce with Howells, D Section lead;ng goalkicker, capping off their forward thrusts . I p; ict OGS will just get up by 15 points in what ore uses to be an outstanding game .

7VES Old Geelong take on Whitefriars who have bee n the leaders all year in the reserves and finished two g;vnes clear on top. They are consistent performers who should run out comfortable winners moving strai,ht into the Grand Final .

I have been advised by nquinas that all looks well for next year and althoir, i not playing last week it was great to see them enjoying the fmals along with St Johns and a mingling of players from other clubs not involved last week .

On a sadder note Aquinas have four players who between them total 600 games of football retiring, M ichael VanKerKaven, David Phelan, Steve Kenny an d Liam King - great supporters, players and on field performers for various reasons will not be available next season . his is the time of year when the HQ luminaries become more visible as they appear in official capacities round the various finals venues . Last week we were graced by Tom Johnston and Ian I at Camberwell, and Richard Evans and Peter H and Central Reserve . These men have all got decades of club experience behind them, on and of"t the field, and it shows. Mind you, Munners made Tommy dizzy by compiling 3-1/2 A4 pages of notes and circumambulating the ground 4 times before the reserves players had even started looking for their socks, but everything went like clockwork.

A special thanks to the t Scotch and Mazenod clubs, led by ~ a : >i and Peter Hanley, they were just super helpiui.

1ST S E --"_ SENIORS Kew were too strong for Richmond Central at windy, raining, hailing and occasionally sunny Central Reserve last Sunday . It was a dog of a day for football of any code, and the players of both sides are commended for being able to play at the standard they did .

Kew set up a 29 point lead in the first term and were never in trouble thereafter. Central weren't able to penetrate Kew's defence for any majors at the scoring end in the second term . Bell, Pedretti, tw-en lli and Cracknell turned Centrals back time and again, and maintained that effort all day with long, well directed kicks into their own attacking zone . Kew s captain, Brian Cullen also put in a superb game, with his pace and precise disposals . Central's best also put in a superb game, with precise disposals . Central's best were Whisper O'Sullivan, on the ball, Chris Shannon at HB, Andy Siwka at HB & HE and Frankie Bove at

HE RESERVE S Old Carey overcame an indifferent start to beat Richmond Central in truly hypothermic conditions.

Things didn't look good for the C's when they were outscored in the first term kicking to the windward end. But they rallied and took a one point lead into the long break, with gritty, determined, wet weather tactics . The winning break came for the C's when they rattled on 3 goals in 3 minutes in the middle of the third term, Central never conceded, but couldn't overcome that margin . For the C's, Ian Cohen was in great form ruck roving, IÂŁel Shrives was solid at FB, Rowan Bardwell controlled the central muddy bit, Mick Cann rucked well, and Simon Jackson was in the middle of every pack all day. Central had good players in Sean O'Sullivan, rucking, Jack Auldist, both ends of the ground, and Neil Bowe, roving.

12th . Whilst it was never a day for forwards, the Bus h Rangers backs shu t

down the C's strikers, and constantly drove the ba into their own scoring zone . There, the smaller, mobil Yarra on-ballers and flankers ran, tackled, smotheret and hassled the ball forward into the opportunit areas, and converted, something the C's could ne accomplish . Yarra was everything the C's wereri focused, first to the ball, backing each other up, an communicating, all of which combined, enabled thet to triumph over the mega-ugly weather, and a disal pointing Old Carey . ri3ptt 1i Tg{ng, Bra : c . all nad fiel Downs, I Vhlte and davs in roles as flankers and on ballers, whi~: 'i'.`ra r had a very effective game at fu back . RESERVES Yarra Valley won a good game against Kew wit victory possible to either side until Yarra kicked d, sealer at the 20 minute mark of the last term.

Paul suffered a horrendous broke leg two seasons back, and it was great to see hii returning to football . For the Bush Rangers, Ashley Rowe get crated many attacks from his flank, as did Davi Balshaw, Tony Crean and Tim Gentle, and a speci ; mention for David Potter, who led the defence brillian ly all day. The C's will be out to reverse la

week's form lapse, and Kew will want to show wh, thev ve believed in all year, that they are the best sic in the section. This will be a contest between Kew experience, solidity, and marking power, versus the C bundle of pace, precision kicking, and swoopir switches . In the elimination game under dog Uni High suffered two devastating blows before the game with number one ruckman Craig s injured at training and goal square goliath Koch unavailable due to work commitments . Despite some nasty injuries the previous week, North _ . " were able to bring some blokes back with Tirchett the big plus and appearing to hit form . From the first bounce it was clear that Coach Craig Fox had chosen his personnel well with North disciplined and hard at the ball early using the wind to open up a handy break which never looked threatened . For most of the day North were able to find an easier, more direct path to goal allowing them to make the most of their more efficient and plentiful forward options with DeMorton dangerous as always . By contrast, Uni High lacked a focal point up forward with the usually brutal boot of "Fatty" .lace for once failing to capitalise on limited o 3rtunities . Z£;yri is, Sorletto, Closter and jprovided the drive for North who showed they have the skill level to match it with the big two ; d every chance of going through next week.

At High, stand-in ruckman David Zulickl was tireless in a role he rarely performs in the two's .

e prevailing weather conditions last weekend reduced the 1st round of finals to a real'slog' . Early bookings were made into the Grand Finals by Southbank (Seniors) an d Oakleigh (Reserves) and mothballs for Power House and St Mary's respectively.

Competing teams in this weeks Preliminary Finals should be more adept to handling any nervous tension, even though the stakes are extremely high. That being the case, the ingredients are there to make for a spectators delight with exciting and entertaining matches in both grades.

REVIEW OF 2ND SEMI FINAL SENIORS St Pat's aided by a considerable breeze failed to fully capitalise and with Southbank's defence proving a tough nut to crack, the Patters went to the break narrow leaders. The Bankers quickly assumed control in the second quarter and at one stage threatened to'open' the game up, however St Pat's dug deep and fought back hard to trail by just 9 points at the long interval. The third quarter proved to be a carbon copy of the 2nd but in reverse mode with St Pat's the attackers and Southbank the defenders .

It was only the last 5 minutes that Southbank was able to stem the tide and reduce the Patters fate and despite 2 late goals the Bankers got home narrow 8 point victors .

Hats off to all players . however those worthy of special mention were Mozza, Nuggett and Bryce for Southbank an d C . Sullivan, Davies and Sebire for St Pats.

RESERVES Southbank's 18 match winning sequence was halted by an aggressive and determined Oakleigh . The Krushers aided by the inclusion of several regular senior players were able to exert pressure on the Bankers for the lst time this season . Southbank failed to test with inexcusable turnovers and simple basic errors. They will however, learn from the experience and with the inclusion of some of their own key players provide much stiffer opposition on the rebound . Full credit to Oakleigh for pursuing a goal, never giving in and for displaying great team spirit . You're now entitled to flag favouritism . Krushers were particularly well served by Jabba, Ferguson and Malpanis whilst Boffa, Damo an d Macca rated a mention for Southbank.

REVIEW OF 1ST SEMI FINAL SENIORS

Power House started in a very aggressive fashion and were hard at it, but not hard enough at the ball . This approach had no effect at all on the Pirates who stuck to their game plan and even though kicking into the breeze in the opening term all but had the game won at the short break . The next 3 stanza's were a mere procession as Peninsula did as they liked and honed their skills for the weeks ahead. The House just could not get their game

going all day and a season that promised much ended or a very disappointing and sombre note. It was a great lean effort by the Pirates with Sharpin outstanding, ably sup ported by Marshall and IaicLorinan who rucked tireless ly after the early loss of Aitchison. The House must havf felt no one was worthy of mention as we did not hear fron them.

RESERVES In atrocious conditions which included a hail storn the younger Pirates were able to withstand all thrown a them by the more experienced Sainters to record a ven good victory and the right to challenge the vanquish . Better players for the victors werfeBankrsithPlm Barclay, Bradon and Bowman while the Saints failed t~ find the fax number while wallowing in their disappoint ment.

PREVIEW ST PAT'S MENTONE V. PENINSULA These two protagonists have had a couple of stirrin~ battled between themselves already this year . St Pats havi won on both occassions, narrowly though by 10 point and 8 points respectively.

Similarly, their positions on the premiership ladde throughout the season were never separated by mor+ than a game. These 2 factors truly reflect how evenl, matched the teams are. The Pirates are probably a littl, more 'brilliant' if allowed space to use their speed an( skill, whilst St Pat's rate higher on the scale in terms c matching up, close checking and aggression . On ou reckoning both teams will be without a couple of key play ers as a result of injuries sustained last week . Weathe and ground conditions will also have a bearing on matter as to will the extent of the aforementioned injuries.

KB 1s at a total loss to be able to confidently predic the outcome of this anticipated'epic' encounter other thai to suggest that 1) Peninsula's greater depth allows then to better cover injuries (see above) and 2) Peninsula has , psychological high' as a result of their mammoth 1st serr final win.

I will more than likely be proved wrong, however P select the Pirates to win by 12 points and advance to th 'big one to meet Southbank .

The Brain is also in a quandary here as to which wa; to go and who to select and why. There are a lot of ifs an buts to it all. The Pirates will have gained lots of conB dence from their big win while maybe the Vultures wi have lost some after giving their all but not quite bringin home the bacon . Just to be different to my fellow scrib and fearless leader fll tip the Vultures but only just in great game.

e finals series gets fully underway this weekend with A td B grade joining in . Umpires' Corner .wishes all teams remaining in the hunt the best in their endeavours for the flag . Good luck to all umpires (field, boundary and goal) who have finals the appointments this weekend. As with the players, finals are the highlight of the season for umpires .

SPIRIT OF THE LAW - ADVANTAGE This weekend we look at law 12 .2.1 and the spirit in which it should be interpreted . This law is one of the more difficult to get right, due to the split-second judgement to be made in summing up whether there is an advantage or not . So what does the Spirit of the Laws state (source-VFL umpiring department publication) : "The ball shall be kept in motion by permitting the team offended against to take advantage, provided play Is continuous" . Advantage can only apply to a free kick .

It cannot apply to a mark .

A guide as to whether play is continuous is that the outcome of the play would have been the same had the whistle not been blown . To implement this well, umpires need to be alert for possible advantage plays in the following circumstances: 'when the ball is loose ; *when the team offended against has possession of the ball; *an advantage call can be cancelled and the set play awarded if such call was not to the advantage of the team offended against. ' The telecommunication providers would have been happy last weekend (and the one before) with the number of mobile phones being used throughout the day at different VAFA venues . This enabled quick updates on other critical games effecting clubs' final positions . Umpires Corner is not sure whom Brendan Allen (young 'B' grade umpire on the rise) was calling though. Could it have been a female friend seen with him during recent weeks?

Bernie Dix (Goal Umpire) was preparing for the 'D' Reserve Ist semi fmal at Central Reserve in the changerooms last weekend when he accidentally smashed and cut his head . Bernie was immediately ordered off to hospital under the blood rule, to receive stitches .

Andrea Flack may be known in future for innovative umpiring clothing trends . Also at Central tResl ne on the weekend, Andrea was seen wearing the g sleeved whites to protect against the bitter cold winds of "Arctic Park" .

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? It was great to catch up with Peter 'Digger' Wiseman when he made his annual appearance at the Pre-Finals' dinner. A true CoAin .gwaod man, Digger looks as though he could still be running in the midmostly in dle. He umpired in the VAFA for many years,. Rated by 'A Grade including a number of big finals many as the best umpire they saw, his communication skills and playing experience were nearly as invaluable as 'that voice' . Nowadays 'Digger' spends Saturday afternoons watching Mazenod O .C . out near home as the quiet observor or the Pies at the 'G' in the AFL matches.

SOCIAL NOTES Peter and Kath Keogh are looking forward to a busy pre-season with a baby due in early 1998 .

he curtain fell on another season last Sunday , . after Grand Finals played in weather, which seemed more appropriate to the mid-season than to "the first careless rapture of spring" .

Selection wise I ended the season on a high note, tipping the two premier sides, each of whom was the leader in its section throughout the season .

REVIEW OF BLADES BOOTS GRAND FINALS SECTION 1 OLD XAVERIANS V. OLD BRIGHTON BLOOD S

Victory to Old Xaverlans by fifteen points gave them back to back premierships . The first quarter was evenly contested as each side strove to gain the ascendancy . Low scoring again seemed likely as there were only five scoring shots for the quarter, at the end of which Old Xaverians held a six point lead . The second quarter proved to be the highest scoring one of the match as Old Brighton Bloods with Malcolm Shippen doing well up forward played their best football to add four goals . On the other hand Old Xaverians proved their talent by adding three goals against the wind. At half time another upset seemed possible as Old Brighton Bloods led by the minimum margin . In the third quarter Old Xaverians responded to coach Matt Tyrrell's pleading and added three goals while restricting Old Brighton Bloods inaccuracy when shooting for goal prevented Old Xaverians from holding a bigger lead than sixteen points at three quarter time .

Once again the stage seemed set for an exciting finish . However reality was that scoring remained minimal in the last quarter, with a total of five scores, added during it . Old Brighton Bloods were able to score only twice in the last quarter and as in the second semi final, they failed to play out a consistent four quarters . At the final siren, the premiership cup belonged to Old Xaverians, who won by fifteen points .

Old Brighton Bloods were again best served by Gerard Bennett who is touted as the likely Fisher/ Mason medallist. Others to do well included Marcus Barber, and Matthew McLennan who enjoyed a great final's series.

Congratulations to Old Xaverians, who went through the season, undefeated on the ground (their only loss of points was through an administrative error) .

SECTION 2 KEW V. SYNDAL TALLY HO

Unlike the second semi final, Kew led Syndal Tall y Ho at each change and despite their scoreless last quarter, Kew won their third Club XVIII premiership, by six points .

Weather conditions, plus the unac~ customed ground size _ meant scoring wa s difficult. Kew opened the better but failed to capitalize on the wind so that at quarter time they clung to a seven point lead .

Syndal Tally Ho, also proved incapable of kicking a high score as Kew held them to a single scoring shot (a goal) during the second quarter . On the other hand Kew were able to score four times which enabled them to hold a nine point lead at half time .

Scoring didn't increase during the third quarter as Kew added the only goal kicked by the other team.

They also added four behinds to three kicked by Syndal Tally Ho . Thus at the last change Kew led by sixteen points .

The premiership still had to be won as the last quarter started. Tiredness set in as players strove to gain the ascendancy. The Syndal Tally Ho defenders and on ballers did their share as they held Kew scoreless for the quarter. However their forwards failed to capitalize on their opportunities as one goal from five scoring shots was not a good result. Straighter kicked would have given the 1997 debutantes a premiership in their first season. Kew determinedly clung to their slight leAd of six points, which they maintained until the final siren . Once again Kew had good players in Craig Johnson, Paul Corridon, Mick guinn and Mick Garoffolo.

Kew are to be congratulated on their pennant won under the leadership of Mick O'Dea (Coach) and Frank Guppy (the man who did everything) .

I now conclude my twelfth successive season of writing this column on the Club XVIII whose format changed this season and for whom our Chief Executive Officer has written season 1998 will be contested under different conditions .

Thanks to my army of readers, whose weekly perusal of the column gives satisfaction to the author .

Also to Sue an d Angela at Elsternwick Park who have been unfailing in their tolerance of and assistance with my erratic deliver of copy .

I once again look forward to the invitation to write again in Season 1998 .

Review - Fi , f =I-F Section 1 At Trinity playing fields last week a fired up Old Paradians bounced out of the blocks to lead well at quarter time with Porteous and Talarico prominent, however by half time Old Carey had clawed their way back to trail by a bit over a kick . Oppy and S. Wood were doing well however the OP's prime movers in Ventura an d Pruscino were equally as damaging. It all came down to the "premiership" quarter and while neither team added a goal the OP's had control for most of the quarter and the momentum had definitely swung their way . Although leading by only (9) points the OP's clicked up a gear in the final term to win by (17) and advance through to the preliminary final next week .

Smith, Stevens and Warren were also prominent for the OP's, while the OC's were well served by Battle, T. Wood and Hawkins .

Section 2 Old Scotch an d University Blacks on paper looked to be a terrific contest, and with a win apiece neither team held any sort of significant psychological advantage over the other . This would change quite significantly, as the first quarter was all Old Scotch adding (3) goals while keeping the Blacks goalless . In fact the Blacks could well have seen themselves in with a chance come half time, but failed to capitalise on their good second quarter efforts with (6) points to trail at half time by almost ( 3) goals . Junkeeer, Thompson an d Crane were in everything for the Scotchies, and with Gross and Hawkins dangerous up fonvard they looked like taking the game over, and they did . By adding (6) second half goals while holding the Blacks goalless for the match the Scotchies won easily to advance to meet the loser of Collegians and Whitefriars who play off in the second-semi final today . Better players for the Blacks on a day that would best be forgotten were Mellings, Peck, Costello and Byrne.

Section (2) Blu e AJAX carried their most recent form into their first-semi final against NtF1SOB last Saturday confident that they could register their first win against MHSOB for the season when it most counted, and they did just that . An even first half saw both teams use the breeze effectively and with the High being well served by Sharpies, Burke an d Norman, both teams were only separated by (6) points at the main break . The Jackas' key players in Blashki, Dukes an d yteross were battling hard and their efforts were being rewarded

with good conversion in front of goal in the blustery conditions. In a third quarter that was tight and tense the High added (5) goals to the Jack-as (3) to hold a slim lead going into the last qu,^rter . However it was the Jackas who ran away booting (8) goals to (1) to run over the tiring MHSOB . Golvan was on fire up forward with (5) majors and with Rosenbaum and Bock consistent performers all t y the Jackas finished the better team to keep their finals hopes alive . For the High better players for the day were Wilson, Downes an d Stirling .

Section (2) Red Well Aquinas were outplayed from go to whoa last Saturday when St . Leos Emmaus jumped out of the blocks comprehensively . With (22) shots to (8) at half time the Bloods were looking down the barrel, as the Two Blues with Willis, Morel and Cashen on fire began to run harder and stronger . The Bloods' worst fears were realised in the second half with the Two Blues doing as they pleased to run out convincing winners, with M anton, McCann an d Bonnici dominant in a strong team effort from the Two Blues .

Previews - 2nd Semi-Finals Section 1

In the clash of traditional rivals Old Xaverians and Uni . Blues the score this year stands at (2) wins to the Xavs . In Round 6 they won a tight contest by (9) points, but clearly outpointed the Blues in Round 14 when they won by over (7) goals. Both sides score at will and the defences of each team will be working overtime today. The Xavs prime movers in W ebb, Jones, Ireland an d Healy will need to be watched along with Nisbett and Fleming. The Xavs will also be mindful of the fact that players such as Carom, Cobbledick, Fricker and Sturrock on their day can be matehwinners, along with fine team players in Eastaugh, Kelly and Terrill .

Both teams appear evenly matched and conditions may well play a big part, but the Xavs must start favourites here todav .

Selection: Old Xaverians Section 2

Collegians take on itefriars at II .30am at Trinity playing fields and with a win apiece to date today shapes as a great battle between two very talentâ&#x20AC;˘ ed teams . The Lions possess strong onballers and goalkickers and the Friars will be keen to stifle the influ ence that Van Der Venne, Florentine and Baxter wil have along with other key players in Brown Champion and Moll . Not to be outdone the Friar : THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 199

,ill approach this match full of confidence with Davis, j,~inch, Winterburn and Phan all capable of matching ,,inning performances and in fine touch . Add to this impressive list players such as Crough, Reid and S-e -ches and you have a real even match . Both teams gnovr the importance of this clash and in what some may admit will be an upset the Friars will gain first r ight of entry in the Section (2) Grand Final in (2) weeks time. selection: Whitefriars Section ( 2) Blue St. Bedes Mentone Tigers will approach their , ateh with Ormond full of confidence knowing they have defeated the Monds on both occasions this season. However they will be well aware that finals are a different story and to go through the season undefeated is a fine achievement, but to lose this final will mean a tough road to get to the Grand Final . Both teams score well, with the Tigers obviously more potent in attack than the Monds and the game could well come down to how well the Tigers forwards are allowed to play. The Monds must be mindful of Kingwell and Wintle up forward, as well as Ryan, McShane, Gangi and Falkingham. While the Tigers will need to be aware that B ro wn, Ashford, Byron, Thompson an d Cullen will all play a big role if the Monds are to advance straight to the Grand Final. While the Monds challenged the Tigers in their last meeting the Tigers must start favourites today and should win by (2) straight kicks .

Selection: St . Bedes Mentone Tigers Section (2) Red Yarra Valley and Old Trinity do battle today for the right of direct entry into the Section (2) Grand Final in (2) weeks time . With a win apiece each team will be expecting to win this encounter given fine conditions should prevail, and going on each team's record to date either team could start favourite . The Valley will rely heavily on Tyshing, T & B Wapshot, Laing, Telford an d Reynolds, whereas the OT's have strong performers in Butler, Newman, Natoli and Ramsden. Both teams have been the (2) outstanding teams of the section and with both teams possessing hard running onballers and strong marking key forwards the match could go either way. Each team will be well aware of each other's strengths and will plan to combat these early on . The match should be one of high quality, where the Valley will get the points and the OT's left to ponder a preliminary final berth .

5 YEARS AGO - 1992 -ollegians went into the A Section Grand Final when they outplayed De La in the first term to lead by 16 points at the first change . De La kept on "catching up" and looked a chance in the final quarter but Rick Schober steadied the defence and the Lions won by 14 points. Best were Stephen Mount (7 goals), Gary Irvine, Mark Hibbins, Matt Galbraith, Rick Schober and Tony Wallace (Coll.) while for De La Andrew Ronchi . John Tully and Chris Campbell were best .

Best and fairest winners were : 'A' Paul Matton (Therry) 15, 'B' David Rogers (Old Trin .) 22, 'C' Robert Lawson (Fawk.) 23, 'D' John Manton (Old Geel .) 20, 'E' Mark Ladgrove (Doveton) and Manny Nicolisi (ANZ) 17, 'F' John Jackson (West Brunswick) 23 .

The celebrations were long and hard at Brighton on Saturday night when Old Brighton Grammarians won their first ever promotion to 'A' Section when they went right away from Old Melburnians in the second half to win the second semi final, 14.11 to 7 .6 . Best were A. Rickarby, T. Hoar, M . Hendrie, C . Lade (Old Melb.) .

What a season for Mazenod who won the 'D' Section flag from fourth position . Three points down at the last change, they kicked 4.2 to Caulfield Grammarians 2 .4 to win by 7 points . Caulfield probably lost the game in the third quarter, when, although well in control, they scored only 3 goals from 12 scoring shots . Best were D . Barker, S. Noble, J . Mannix, A. Rogers . W. Marshall, T. Chilcott (Maz) and C . Simpson, D . Cromer, T. Royals (C .G) .

In U 19(1) second semi final Old Xaverians were far too strong for De La Salle Blue, winning 7 .8 to 3 .2 . Best were L . Fay, S. Barlow, A. Egan, M . Dillon (Old Xav .) and C . Lester, J . Taylor, P. Clancy (De La).

10 YEARS AGO - 1987 Old Xaverians and Ormond lined up in the second semi. Ormond's only two losses for the season were to Old Xaverians . The AF's tipsters Ross Booth and Peter French tipped Old Xaverians. At quarter time things looked black for the tipsters - O .X. had kicked a solitary point to the Monds 3 .4 . From then on it was all Old Xaverians, final scores 15 .11 to 8 .13 .

Dermott Dann (wing), Peter Curtain (h .b .), Danny Meagher (roving) and Nick Wilton (c .h .b) were the best in a very even Old Xavs team . Russell

Barnes was desperate, Scott Taylor was

energetic, Brad Nash --held Steve Curtain to 3 goals - the balance of the Ormond team was disappointing.

In a real thriller neighbours St Bernards and Therry played the administrators 'nightmare', a seeond semi draw, 15.7 to 14 .13. At the 20 minute mark, Therry with two Steve Reidy goal square marks and goals, and another to Kane, were 13 points up. It looked all over but then St B's half forward Greg Wood kicked two marvellous goals, John Pearson got another to put them a goal up . Therry, handballing desperately persisted. Finally forward Paul Jones marked and goaled and the siren sounded for a draw.

What a turn-around in 'C' . Annihilated in the second semi by Kew, Monash Blues came out with a plan . They persisted and finally took out the flag, 13 .18 to 10 .11 . Best were Sturgess, Hipwell, Gill, Carman, Culvenor, McGregor (Monash Blues) and Griffiths, Busuttil, Kalac (Kew) .

The Monash line-up : Bks: Mick Hay, Chris Roberts, Dick Calvenor ; HB : Adrian Barker, Danny Carman, John Quin ; C : Greg Hipwell. o be promoted to Section 1 of the U19 competition can be both exciting and daunting at the same time . Exciting, because this is the ultimate challenge facing U19 teams ; daunting, because of the changing nature of youth teams every given season . tl;ilat can we expect? Will we be competitive? Will we earn respect? Will we be embarrassed? Might we dare even to contemplate being successful?

There is nothing quite like gearing up the mind for the coming season than to give weight to these sorts of questions .

From what I understand, I think it is true to say that over the years a number of teams in the lower sections of the U 19's have resisted the challenge of competing in Section 1 in the belief that it would be too difficult there, and they would rather their players enjoy (more) success in the lower sections . This attitude, I believe, is mistaken.

I am in a position to compare, having coached my U19 team in lower sections in 1995-96, and this year in Section 1 . 1 should like to share some of my thoughts with you .

In every facet of the game, Section 1 is superior as the following illustrations show: a) strongly competitive teams all the way down - no easy games, b) quicker tempo - hence fitter players, c) more skilful players across the board, d) well coached and better drilled teams with set plays, zone defences, kick-out strategies etc., e) vastly more physical games, hence a more potent bridging of the physical gap between youth and senior ranks, f) interest of players maintained, given the closeness of the competition (at least for two thirds of the current season ) It goes without saying that to be competitive in any grade of football you must have the players . So it is in Section 1 . If you do not want to be embarrassed, get on your recruiting bike and start pedaling furiously . When I was told my club had been promoted late last year, this was with the knowledge that I had all of six players returning from the previous season .

To any aspiring U19 coach, can I say do not be daunted about the prospect of coaching in Section 1 . It should be your ultimate goal. It will challenge and excite you and fuel your imagination . Young players, not quite ready for senior football, are being groomed in the best possible VAFA youth competition . This cannot but help them be better players when their time

comes to step up . While nine of the ten teams in Section 1 have their senior teams in A or B Section, this is not the case with my club. This illustrates the VAFA's readiness to promote any youth side providing they have demonstrated their capabilities over time.

Providing clubs can hang on to their U19 players once they have become of senior playing age, you would have to think the future of those clubs is assured, the more so for having their young players compete against other elite footballers in Section I of the VAFA. 2 C~ SENIORS : All registered players with a permi t SE N IORS/RESERVES : If both teams are playing, reserve player must have played at least 2 matches in the senior or reserve teams in the 1997 season (be registered and have a permit) .

U N DER 19 : Must be registered and have a permit . If player has represented his club in more than 5 senior and reserve matches, he is ineligible unless he has played more than 5 under 19 matches .

If a player is ineligible (due to above) and player does not obtain senior selection in his club's first senior final match he is eligible to play any subsequent U19 finals match .

U19 players playing in VSFL U18 after June 30 must at round 16 decide where they will complete the season (VSFL or VAFA U19 only) i .e . any player who plays VSFL Under 18 football this weekend cannot play VAFA U18 football again this year. Where a club fields a second U19 team to qualify for the Section 2 team, player not to have played more than 10 matches in U19/1 team .

RESERVES : Must be registered with a permit. Must have played 2 reserve matches and not more than 10 senior matches during the season .

CLUB XVIII SECTIONS : Players must have played in at least 4 matches and not played in more than a total of eight senior and reserve grade games .

FINALS DRINKING - Clubs are advised that drinking alcohol after a curtainraiser finals match is not allowed even if it is in the dressingrooms or follows an U19/reserves grand final .

Clubs playing a finals match at a non-VAFA venue are to insist that their players and spectators do not consume alcohol during the playing of matches even if it is inside an enclosed social club facility .

SECURITY - At finals venues the club charged with providing the umpire escort must organize for the umpires' room to be locked when the umpires take the field and have the key to unlock the umpires room when they leave the field .

ELSTERNWICK PARK - Both sets of gates (Glenhuntly Road) and the back gates (entrance from St Kilda St) will be open for spectators to gain entrance to Elsternwick Park during the finals .

Elsternwick Park finals charges are $5 and $2 (cars inside EP) . A, B and C section grand finals $6 and $3 . There is no charge for cars parked outside the ground in the off-St Kilda St car park .

RUNNERS, TRAINERS, WATER CARRIER S Umpires have been instructed to inspect all runners', water carriers' and trainers' uniforms before matches and if not up to standard the official is to be told he/she is not able to take the field until attired correctly .

Behaviour - Runners. To deliver message from coach only and immediately leave the arena . Water Carriers . Not to deliver messages from coaches . Not to linger on the field of play. To deliver water only during a break in play or to players behind the passage of play . Trainers . May carry water If team short of water carriers .

Otherwise can only enter field when a player requires medical assistance . Cannot deliver message from coach .
