Big V Representative Football has always been a most highly regarded honour bestowed amongst the best of the best Victorian Amateur footballers.

And 2025 is a significant year in that rich history as we will be celebrating 100 years of Big V pride since the first team took to the field against South Australia at the MCG in 1925.

We will mark this special occasion with a once in a lifetime gala event to be held at Centrepiece at Melbourne Park, on Thursday evening, 10th July. Every player who has ever pulled on a Big V guernsey or been involved with a Big V team (be it Senior Men’s, Senior Women’s, U19, U23, B-D4, or International Rules), will be invited to attend what promises to be a wonderful event not to be missed!

The event will also feature representatives from the 2025 Big V teams, and this week we announced the four coaches of those sides that will no doubt represent us with distinction.

and then took the senior AFLW coaching role at Carlton, headlined by a grand final appearance in his first year.

Having lost to Perth Football League in 2024, the Big V Men’s team need no further incentive to return to winning ways at Elsternwick Park on Saturday 12th July in our centenary year.

With an undefeated record to uphold, our Big V Women’s team is also in experienced hands as Paul Groves takes the reigns again this year. Heralded as the 2018 AFLW Premiership coach at Western Bulldogs, Paul has led our Women’s Big V team to victory in both 2023 and 2024, on the back of building a great environment and strong rapport amongst the playing group.

we will be celebrating 100 years of Big V pride

With Greg Hutchison stepping away after coaching the Big V Men’s team for the past two years, I wish to take this opportunity to publicly thank Greg for all his efforts, in particular, the manner in which he embraced and promoted the spirit of the Big V in his two years at the helm. His passion for what the Big V represents was second to none.

We received a strong field of candidates eager to fill Greg’s shoes and ultimately, we were thrilled to announce Daniel Harford as our Big V Men’s coach for 2025. Daniel has playing and coaching experience at both the elite AFL level and VAFA level. Following a 162 game AFL playing career with Hawthorn (153) and Carlton (9), Daniel played the 2005 season in the VAFA with Old Paradians and coached St Kevin’s for five seasons (2012-2017) including their B-Grade premiership in 2015, securing their promotion to A-Grade. In 2018 he moved on to Collingwood as an Assistant Coach of their AFLW team,

Speaking of building a strong camaraderie, Luke Mahoney certainly produced a tight knit Premier B – Division 3 representative team that took the chocolates against the Bendigo Football Netball League in 2024. Having represented the Big V himself and coached Fitzroy to the 2018 C-Grade premiership and 2023 B-Grade grand final, we are thrilled that Luke will again lead our representative men’s team into battle for the re-match at the QE Oval in Bendigo on Sunday 13th July.

The curtain raiser on that day will feature our Men’s Under 19 representative team led by Hampton Rovers U19 coach Paul Carrigan. Paul coached the VAFA U19 South team to a victory in our 2024 ‘Showcase match’ that featured some really exciting talent, and Paul is keen to give our next generation of Big V players every opportunity to display their talents against Bendigo on July 13.

With the leadership of our coaches, support of our Clubs and the commitment of our players, I’m confident that we can continue to deliver on the proud tradition of Big V success that the VAFA has produced for over 100 years.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S

From Blue to Blue Heaven

University Blues have ridden the rollercoaster in William Buck Premier Men’s first two rounds. After an after-the-siren loss in Round 1, the Blues played another thriller – this time against Collegians at Harry Trott.

They scored 6 of the first 7 goals and still led by 21 points at the final change, before the Lions kicked the first three goals of the last term to close within 2 points. The Blues settled with the next two goals and had the game under control until Jordon Carroll marked at the top of the goalsquare and brought it back within one straight kick at the 32-minute mark. A desperate final 30 seconds ensued as the Lions drove it forward. But the Blues’ defence held on for a 5-point victory that means more than just the 4 premiership points.

Matt Smith (Uni Blues): “I thought we controlled the game really well in the first half, keeping to our style and the way we wanted to move the ball. “To their credit, they just kept hanging around, finding ways to stay in touch, and then they owned a lot of the momentum in the second half. We played into their style and allowed them to dictate too much. “Any time you can get a win away against Collegians, you’ll take it however you can.”

Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “Unfortunately, we had another slow start and were playing catch up throughout the afternoon. “We saw more of our brand of footy compared to last week, but ultimately couldn’t get the job done. Credit to the Blues who were able to stand up in the big moments throughout the day.”

St Bernard’s have started their 2025 campaign in the best possible fashion, claiming the Melbourne Uni double, accounting for the University Blacks after defeating the Blues in Round 1. The Blacks led by a kick at the first change before the Snowdogs booted 4 goals in 6 minutes. Blacks stabilised to close within 11 points at the major break. The early stages of the final quarter proved decisive, as St Bernard’s kicked the first two goals to crack the game open. They accelerated from there, finishing with a 6-goal last quarter to secure an impressive 46-point victory and a promising 2-0 start.

Steve Alessio (St Bernard’s): “We knew that we had to be on top of the contested part of our game. Uni Blacks are very good at getting numbers to the ball and then generating run and carry. “I’m glad we were able to run out the game in the

hot conditions. We were pretty even across the board, with most our players contributing well on the day.

Dale Bower (Uni Blacks): “St Bernard’s were excellent and thoroughly deserved victory. Unfortunately, we ran out of steam in the second half, but I am proud of how our players fought to the end through adversity. “We know our best footy is good enough to get the results we want. We just need to keep working towards it.”

Two potential premiership contenders collided as St Kevin’s hosted Old Xaverians at TH King Oval. Xavs scored the first 10 points of the match – which proved to be the largest margin all day. Goals were hard to come by, with the two teams kicking a combined 13.25 as the pressure and intensity took their toll in the hot conditions. Less than a kick separated the teams for much of the last quarter.

Denis Symeopoulos put Xavs ahead with a quick snap at the 13-minute mark, before SKOB’s Jack Darmody was taken high and calmly slotted what turned out to be the winner from 25 metres out at the 26-minute mark. The siren sounded 6 minutes later, signalling a confidence-boosting victory for St Kevin’s against a team they seem destined to meet in September.

Anthony Lynch (St Kevin’s): “It was a fantastic display of VAFA football - highly skilled, huge physical contests, and both teams had their chances to win. “We are thrilled to have found a way to grind out a win against a really strong opposition who we respect, and they have certainly improved since last year.”

Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “We certainly had our chances throughout the day, but unfortunately, it was one of those days where our finishing was below where we’d expect. “Full credit to Plugger and SKOBs in the end, such a well-drilled and organised team. If you don’t take your chances, they’ll get you.”

Last year’s minor premiers met last year’s Premier B champions as Old Brighton hosted Old Haileybury The Tonners dominated the first term with 11 shots to 2, establishing a 39-point quarter-time lead that would prove decisive. The Bloods worked their way into the contest in the second term, winning their share of inside ball and controlling territory. Seven shots to three resulted, closing the gap to 30 points at the major break.

Old Brighton kicked the first 4 goals of the second half before Old Haileybury responded with 4 of their own to threaten a comeback. However, the Tonners regained control to boot 4 of the next 5 and retain top spot with a 46-point win.

Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “Another beauty at the Beach - fast deck and good conditions had the ball moving. “We wanted to make sure we started really well and, importantly, get pressure on Haileybury so they couldn’t get their speed and ball movement going as they score so quickly and you end up chasing. “It was much more even after the first quarter, with both teams having momentum at different points. It was great to kick another score over 100.”

Daniel Ward (Old Haileybury): “Full credit to Old Brighton, who jumped us at the start. They made us pay for our errors by hand and foot. “We lost Noah Higgins to a concussion and Kye Turner to a hamstring before half time, so the game could have really got away from us. We’re proud of the group for hanging in there all day and fighting the game out in tough conditions.”

The final game saw last season’s premiers Old Scotch visit De La Salle at Waverley Oval for the first time since 2018. The Cardinals booted 5 goals to 1 in the opening term to lead by 23 points. Another 6 goals to 3 in the second quarter saw that advantage expand to 40 points at the half, then 52 at the last change before De La posted a 5-goal-to-3 final term that reduced the eventual margin to 40 points.

It’s been an impressive start to Old Scotch’s premiership defence. They join Old Brighton and St Bernard’s as the three undefeated teams after a fortnight of William Buck Premier Men’s footy.

Mark Gnatt (Old Scotch): “We played some really good footy for 3-and-a-half quarters. “Our ability to set up well behind the ball and then move the ball with efficiency was very pleasing. “Full credit to De La who kept fighting as they finished the game off strongly and proved that they can match it with the sides in Premier Grade.”

Nick Hyland (De La Salle): “We were outplayed by a very well-drilled Old Scotch team. Similar to last week, we had some really good patches where we had the game on our terms. Some lapses in concentration really hurt us, and to Scotch’s credit, they made us pay. “We need to create more quality looks to give us a chance to kick a winning score. We also need to play more effective team defence.”

St Kevin’s strike blow in Grand Final rematch revenge over Old Scotch

It was another entertaining week of football in William Buck Premier Women’s on Saturday, highlighted by a thrilling Grand Final rematch between St Kevin’s and Old Scotch, and a second straight win for newcomers Old Geelong in their debut season.

Last year’s Grand Final participants battled it out in an enthralling contest on Saturday afternoon, with St Kevin’s triumphing by thirteen points, 4.8 (32) to Old Scotch’s 3.1 (19). It was the usual suspects for St Kevin’s, with Hannah Smith and Kate Stanton contributing to the scoreboard—combining for three of their four goals.

Dean Anderson, coach of Old Scotch, spoke about the team’s focus on continued improvement throughout the season and the growing rivalry between the two clubs in Premier Women’s. “(We’ve got) lots of work to do, but we aren’t disappointed with the weekend. The rivalry continues to build.”

Old Geelong continued their impressive start to the season with an emphatic victory over Premier Women’s stalwarts Kew. The OGs delivered a strong four-quarter performance in their 36-point win, firmly cementing themselves in the top four. Among the best were two debutants that Coach Jack Crameri has high hopes for, in Charlotte Mackenzie and Sophie Gorton.

Kew coach Emily Avery was full of praise for her side, who have been struggling with injuries—particularly in the ruck department—and is happy to reach the Easter bye this week (and not just for the chocolates!). Avery was complimentary of her team’s spirit and effort in the contest. “I was really pleased with how the team stayed connected. The intent to contest was strong.”

Caulfield Grammarians moved to the top of the William Buck Premier Women’s ladder with a dominant showing against Williamstown CYMS. The 62-point victory was highlighted by a terrific four-goal display from Sarah Kenny, with the Fields also boasting seven other individual goal kickers on the day.

Williamstown CYMS coach Xavier Smith admitted his side has faced tough challenges early in the season, with back-to-back losses to the Cardinals and Grammarians. However, Smith says he’s seen improvement and is confident they’ll take the right steps to become competitive throughout the remainder of the season. “Moving forward, we’ll continue to focus on defending the whole ground, making it harder for teams to move the ball and score against us.”

After tough Round 1 defeats, both West Brunswick and Old Yarra Cobras were eager to notch their first win of the 2025 season. The Magpies emerged triumphant over the Cobras in a match that saw a flurry of second-half scoring, finishing 5.9 (39) to 2.1 (13).

Maria Constas and Jaimie Olorenshaw stood out for the Magpies in a midfield missing several senior players. Coach Ryan Wardel was thrilled with the performance and, when asked what he took from the win, said: “That our best footy is as good as anyone’s, and we can match it with anyone if we keep building and sharpening our game plan.”

Cobras coach Michael Talbot noted the growth within his group, which had to adjust to coaching changes just before the season began. He praised his team’s efforts over the first two rounds and their willingness to play attacking football. “Our intensity and effort were really good. We are trying to be brave when we have the football. At times, we looked dangerous moving the ball quickly.”

Concluding the Round 2 fixtures in William Buck Premier Women’s, newly promoted Fitzroy put together a dominant four-quarter performance, defeating Melbourne Uni Women’s 11.14 (80) to 0.0 (0) at W.T. Peterson Oval.

Cooper Watkins

The Roys’ performance was headlined by Maddie Smith and Grace Painting—both former teammates recruited from country leagues—who provided run and carry throughout the game. Coach Nathan Jumeau was pleased with the performance but already has his sights set on Round 3’s challenge against the elite St Kevin’s outfit. “We will look to continue growing our offensive side of the game and test that against one of the best women’s football teams in recent years.”

On the other side, Melbourne Uni Women’s had some bright moments despite the heavy loss, with Lily Harris and Eve Sheehan winning contests and applying repeated pressure around stoppages. Coach Michael Goldsmith praised his side, acknowledging the current challenges, particularly on the scoreboard, but emphasising growth. “We’re under no illusions about where we’re at – this is a team in the early stages of a rebuild. The scoreboard doesn’t always show it, but we’re building something that will stick.”

Round 3 of William Buck Premier Women’s kicks off on Saturday April 26th, with the Easter weekend bye coming up. There are some mouth-watering clashes as season 2025 starts to heat up. Two undefeated sides in Old Geelong and Caulfield Grammarians face off, West Brunswick travel to Kew to face the Bears, Old Yarra Cobras and Williamstown CYMS go head-to-head in a bid to notch their first win of the season, Fitzroy battle with St Kevin’s and in a standalone game on Sunday afternoon the Cardinals, travel to Melbourne Uni to face MUWFC.

PREMIER B MEN’S

Two go 2-0 as Laukens’ ten goals

light up Premier B

A ten-goal haul for Harry Laukens and a midfield clinic from Lachie Harker saw Old Camberwell head to the Easter bye in superb touch; the Wellers enjoying a thumping 154-point win over the Hampton Rovers, 27.15 (177) to 2.11 (23).

“I think (the ten goals) was a lot more from the efforts up the ground and the way we structure our forward line, and the way the ball came to it,” said his Coach Neil Connell, in charge of one of only two undefeated teams in Premier B.

Laukens didn’t receive the full complement of coaches votes despite his day out - those went to 20-year-old Lachie Harker (39 disposals, 11 inside 50s, nine tackles and five goal assists) supreme in the midfield in his second senior game for Old Camberwell after arriving from Old Scotch.

“Lachie’s ball use was first rate, by hand and foot,” said Connell.

“His kicking on both sides of his body was elite, and our forwards were the beneficiaries of that.”

“We have a long injury list and (are) exposing our younger players all at once to Premier B. Ideally, we would like to bring them in with a little more senior protection,” said Rover Coach Marty Pask.

“We keep working and hopefully gain some more experience over the next couple of weeks.”

Old Ivanhoe is the other undefeated team in Premier B – but only just, screaming home with an eight-goal final quarter and completing a comeback win over an impressive Old Carey

The Hoers fell behind in the first 15 minutes of the game and didn’t return to the lead until 15 minutes into the final term, Old Carey’s quality of entry and ball movement causing the home side headaches early.

“We felt our small forward line gave them issues,” said Old Carey coach Luke Giles, “as well as our ability to turn the ball over in our forward half.”

Old Carey led by as many as 32 points before the Hoers made inroads, the margin cut to 14 points with a quarter to go.

“At three quarter time, I went around to each of the groups and said, ‘who can run out this last quarter? Who’s got it in them?’” said Old Ivanhoe coach Jarrod Gieschen.

“A couple of the boys said, ‘I’m ready to run a marathon’.”

With Alex Mirkov, Billy Murphy, Archie Franklin, Toby McLean and both Naishes running hot, the Hoers took charge across

the middle portion of the final quarter, booting four goals in seven minutes to wrest the lead from the Panthers.

Accurate kicking in front of goal was critical for the Hoers, who ran out 19.4 (118) to 13.13 (91) winners - but the Panthers lost no admirers.

“When we play our way we can gap sides fast, irrespective of the opposition, and we showed this on the weekend,” said Giles.

“There’s a clear gap between the two sides, but not an unbridgeable one.”

Old Melburnians are on the winners list after a Round One defeat, responding with a thumping of Old Geelong at Elsternwick Park.

It was new Coach Nathan Brown’s first meeting with his old team - one he took to the club’s first ever Premier B Men’s finals campaign last year - and former co-Coach Nick Dixon.

“I didn’t love coaching against my old team,” Brown admitted.

“I’d been there for five really good years, five really enjoyable years of great people - I knew them inside out.”

The most pleasing part for Browny from the 25.9 (159) to 10.5 (65) win was the Redlegs’ consistent effort.

“It was pleasing for the lads to put together four quarters … that they could see out what we’re trying to put in place,” said Brown.

For OGs coach Nick Dixon, the 94-point drubbing is quite the return to earth after a win on the road over Fitzroy in Round One, but the coach is confident his team can brush off the loss after the break.

“We were well below our best, but we will come back and improve … it’s a great challenge for us to see how we bounce back from a really poor day,” he said.

Caulfield Grammarians joined the OMs on the winners list in 2025, enjoying a siren-to-siren victory over Fitzroy, with the Roys’ return to Premier B footy off to a shaky 0-2 start.

With VFL-listed trio Ollie Lowe (three goals and best for Caulfield), Patrick Fairlie and Josh Hutchings (four goals) all released to play, it was a very strong Fields side that fronted up at Glen Huntly Park.

Coach Paul Satterley had focused on the contested side of the game after being “spanked” by Od Ivanhoe’s midfield in Round One, finding the three additions helped the team “lift a gear.”

“It was probably two contrasting game styles,” Satterley said.

“Fitzroy very quickly wanted to make (the game) a real scrap, and we were pretty keen to get it out in some space. I thought we did that; I thought our ball movement on the day was pretty exciting.

“Our intent was good, and we were right in the mix up until late in the second quarter, when the hot weather started to take its toll,” said Roys coach Travis Ronaldson.

“We had done a lot of defending and our ability to get up and down the ground was affected.”

Finally, Old Trinity was another club to break its 2025 duck, shaking off a slow start at Fearon Reserve and defeating Williamstown CYMS by 42 points.

Neither side scored a goal in the first quarter despite warm and sunny conditions, but a five-minute, four-goal Ts run early in the second quarter, where James Heath, Hugh Beasley, Louis Davidson and Tom Wenn fired through a goal apiece, put Old Trinity clear by 22 points.

It was an advantage it would not yield over the course of the game.

“When (Old) Trinity got really clean below the knees, we got fumbly,” said CYs coach Con Terzoglou.

“They were able to find good long possession chains that put our defenders under pressure. Eventually we couldn’t hold them out.”

Old Trinity led by 25 points at half time and increased its lead at every break after, 14.13 (97) to 7.13 (55) winners.

“Around the footy it was pretty even,” said Ts coach Donald McDonald, “but I thought our backs were pretty good.”

“(The CYs) have got some really handy footballers up forward, so I thought our defenders did a really good job on their avenues to goal.”

Williamstown CYMS and Fitzroy will resume their feature fixture on ANZAC Day when the competition returns after Easter for Round Three, the game to take place at Brunswick Street Oval next Friday.

Old Trinity continues its run of away games with a visit to the Hampton Rovers at Boss James Reserve on April 26, the Old Melburnians host Old Ivanhoe in what’s sure to be a compelling contest, Old Geelong play Caulfield Grammarians at Como Park and Old Carey will try to spoil Old Camberwell’s unblemished record at Gordon Barnard Reserve.

PREMIER B WOMEN’S

Chargers plug in and power up for historic win

After two rounds of Premier B Women’s, the ladder is starting to take shape, with four sides yet to drop a match, while four sides are still searching for their first win.

The first match of the round saw Parkdale Vultures travel to Elsternwick Park to take on Old Melburnians, where the Old Melburnians recorded an almost flawless 14.13 (97) to 0.1 (1) victory.

Young gun Olive Mclean set the tone for the Omlettes early, kicking 2.3 in the opening term, leaving the Vultures trailing by 23 at the first break.

Things did not slow down from there, as the Omlettes continually proved too quick and too strong for Parkdale, whose sole score came late in the third quarter.

Parkdale coach Mark Allen conceded that the Vultures are in a tough position this year, feeling out of their depth after having lost several key players in the off-season, with a quarter of the list having never played football before. Despite this, Allen was proud of his team’s “never give up” attitude.

“Even though the team knew we were clearly out classed and not at the level of our opposition, they kept their heads up and kept fighting to the best of their ability and did their best to implement the style of game we wish to play.”

Regardless of the result, Allen was also quick to celebrate the efforts of his players.

“Tori Furlonger was the standout in an under-siege backline, Shanae Carter won plenty of the ball through the midfield in her first game for the club and was well supported by fellow midfielders, Sienna Symons, Jess Welford and Naomi Russo.”

For Old Melburnians coach Nic Stephens, the win was set up by the immense pressure the Omlettes brought across the board, and especially in the midfield.

After narrowly scraping through for a win in Round 1, Stephens was pleased to see the team take the lessons learnt from that match and put them into action.

“We wanted to work on pressure, midfield structure and ball movement, and the girls really took it on board, and you could see the results of their hard work over the weekend. It’s just really rewarding as a coach to have a group that is super receptive to our feedback and then have the ability to execute as well.”

The Kogler sisters were named best on, with Amelia “Kogs” Kogler shining in her new leadership role, while also taking her game to a new level with increased time spent in the backline where she provided great drive out of defence.

In just her first two games for the Omlettes, Ollie Mclean has already shown signs of greatness, which was rewarded on the scoreboard this week as she finished the day with four goals.

Next up, Beaumaris secured their second win of the season, defeating Old Xaverians 11.11 (77) to 4.2 (26).

It was a tight tussle to start, as Beaumaris kicked the first two goals of the day, before Old Xaverians quickly responded with two of their own. Alana Hilford kicked her first major of the year to earn the Sharks a one-goal lead heading into the first break.

Beaumaris got the game on their terms in the second, kicking away to lead by 28 points at the main break.

Old Xaverians regained some control in the third term and were able to match it with Beaumaris, however, they ran out of steam in the final term, allowing the margin to push out to a game-high 51 points by the final siren.

VFLW talent Piper Phelan pulled out a classy performance to earn the coaches’ accolades, while Rosie Byrne also impressed, finishing the day with three majors.

It was a blowout at Southern Road Reserve, where St Bedes/Mentone Tigers trounced Coburg by a monstrous 147 points.

By half time, the scoreline already read 11.8 (74) to 0.0 (0), and Coburg were left scrambling for an answer to stop the Tigers’ momentum.

The story remained the same in the second half, with St Bedes piling on another 11 goals. Coburg were left still searching for their first goal of the year, only registering a single behind in the final term.

Despite the tough loss, Coburg’s best performers included Alana Benakovic, Aiyana Ananiev and Elise Putyra.

For the Tigers, Nina Coghill had a big day out, finishing with four goals, while Isabella Gietzmann continued her impressive form with another five-goal haul and captain Maddi Wilson led from the front, finishing with six of her own. Over at Marcellin College, history was made when Port Melbourne Chargers secured their first senior victory, downing Marcellin by an emphatic 77 points.

The Chargers came out with all guns blazing, leaving the Sheagles shell-shocked to find themselves down by 52 points at the major break.

Marcellin regained some composure in the third term and were able to match the Chargers, with each side scoring two goals for the term. However, Port Melbourne broke away again in the final term, extending their lead by a further 23 points.

For Marcellin, club stalwarts Alana Pane, Zoe Glascott and Laura Robertson can hold their heads high, knowing that they battled courageously all day.

On a legacy-making day for Port Melbourne Chargers, the performances of Amelie Kamberis and Scarlett Orritt were highlights, while Georgia Harris is also sure to make it into the history books, after kicking a bag of five.

The final match of the round kicked off at dusk with a flag unfurling of Old Brighton’s 2024 Division 1 Women’s premiership flag. Under evening lights at Brighton Beach Oval, Old Brighton showed that they belong at the top, with a solid 4.9 (33) - 1.3 (9) performance against Westbourne Grammarians.

It was a tight battle in the first term, with neither side able to get a good look at goals. Quick ball movement allowed Old Brighton two goals in quick succession early in the second, swinging the momentum in their favour, however, Westbourne defence stood strong, refusing to let any more majors through before the main break.

Westbourne started the second half on top, bringing the margin back to one goal, until a Brighton goal right before the siren put a stop to their charge. With the majority of play in the final term occurring in Brighton’s forward half, Brighton ran out eventual 24-point winners.

“Westbourne were a well-structured team, so we had to concentrate on moving the ball quickly into our forward line. Once we did this the game opened up a bit,” said Old Brighton coach Andrew Grant.

Captain Indi Tait was the only multiple goal scorer on the day, finishing with two. Grant also praised the performances of Giselle Buckley and Bridgette Hagan, who played important roles in Old Brighton’s victory.

For Westbourne, Hannah Scothern and Chloe Weston-Sirett received the coach’s votes.

Statement victories for Parkdale and Beaumaris set up mouthwatering clash after Easter bye

The Parkdale Vultures have franked their credentials as a genuine contender for the Premier C crown this season, after an eleven-goal avalanche in the third quarter powered them to a thunderous 77-point victory over PEGS

Despite a slender half-time lead, Vultures coach Owen Lalor insists his leaders were ‘frustrated by not playing their best footy’. A few magnet moves later and a stern warning confronted the competition – these Vultures will be at the pointy end once again.

Onballers Tarkyn O’Leary and Oliver Green were moved to the wings, providing significant drive between the arcs. Wingers Kai Colella and Hunter Lynch went to half-back, and impressed both rebounding the football, and defending one-on-ones. In the absence of talismanic forward Mitch Brown, centre half-back Jack Cheep was swung forward to great effect, booting an equal team-high three goals for the afternoon. 13 individual goalkickers contributed to the team’s tally, in ‘a real plus’ for Lalor’s side.

The 26.13 (169) to 14.8 (92) result sees the Vultures move to second on the ladder, while PEGS find themselves seventh, amidst a logjam of sides with a 1-1 record.

Above Parkdale on percentage only, sit AJAX, who on Sunday registered a second successive win by more than 50 points. The 19.17 (131) to 12.4 (76) victory over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers ensures new Coach Lachlan Buszard’s dream start to life as the Jackas figurehead continues.

In hot, blustery conditions at Elsternwick Park, AJAX piled on ten scoring shots to one in the first quarter, building a platform for their eventual resounding victory.

Pleasing for Buszard was the proficiency of the youth in his team. “Our average age was about 22 today,” he said. 18-year-old Jethro Gunn has impressed his coach and onlookers alike in his first two senior appearances for the club, booting five goals across the two fixtures, and providing a spark around the ground. “He is a beauty,” doted Buszard.

Toby Sheezel starred with a game-high four goals, joining ruckman Jake Wrobel as the only two Jackas to find themselves with best player nods in both games this season.

A nine-goal last quarter from Brad Berry’s men provided some reward for effort for the Tigers, who had managed just 20 points in the first three stanzas. Berry was pleased with the ‘healthy glimpses’ his side showed late in the game but was left disappointed with his side’s inability to regain the upper hand in three facets of the game they pride themselves on: contest method, team defence, and pressure.

Berry praised AJAX’s ‘slick’ foot skills, and their ‘ability to read cues and outnumber at marking contests’. The Tigers will spend the bye refining their disposal choices, particularly between the arcs, inspired by the Jackas’ willingness to always take the first option.

Sitting third heading into the Easter bye is Beaumaris, who bounced back from a Round 1 loss to the Tigers in emphatic fashion. Their 21.21 (147) to 7.5 (47) victory over Glen Eira/Old McKinnon was underscored by ‘fantastic and really organised defenders’ and ‘mids who highlighted their strengths’, according to well-pleased Sharks Coach Josh Bourke.

“We had a couple of things click and certainly some improved availability helped us. It was a bit of a strange game given the ground, and I think the scores ballooned a little as a result,” he said.

After six straight losses to end last year’s Premier B campaign, and a Round 1 loss last week, Bourke touched on how much a performance like Saturday’s means to the Sharks. “July 20th is the last time we sang the song. It (the win) was a really important one for us as a club,” he said.

Favourite sons in ruckman Callum Heath and midfielder Riley Virtue continued their strong starts to the season, with Josh Trew, Tom O’Rourke, Jai Florent and Liam Hayes also drawing Bourke’s praise.

On the back of limited rotations due to early injuries, the Gryphons were left to rue 13 red-time goals against, eight of which came in the second half. “We competed well till about the 20-minute mark of each quarter, but then they just overran us,” acknowledged coach Guy Martyn.

“In saying all of that, they beat us in every facet of the game – cleaner with their hands and execution of skills,

stronger in the contest and able to pick us apart when they had the ball,” he continued.

It’s a winless start in Carnegie for Martyn, whose attention must now turn to a daunting trip to Brindisi Street, where his charges will encounter a smarting Tigers outfit, in a fortnight’s time.

Despite fewer scoring shots than the visiting Mazenod side, Marcellin eked out a three-point victory on Saturday, overcoming an 11-point halftime deficit. Eagles vice-captain Adam Tomaro backed up his brave efforts in last week’s loss, with another stellar performance, while Jarryd Raffa and Matthew Fewings led the way for the Nodders.

Nodders Coach Peter Banfield was complimentary of Marcellin’s performance in the ‘very hot’ conditions, declaring, “they outplayed us, and deserved to win.” The 10.11 (71) to 9.14 (68) result leaves both sides 1-1 at the bye, with Mazenod’s percentage much healthier than Marcellin’s, owing to the latter’s sizeable loss in Round 1.

In Armadale, Parkside exacted some revenge against Prahran, in the two sides’ first meeting since the Division 1 Grand Final of 2024. Compounding the 14.8 (92) to 9.3 (57) loss for Two Blues coach Craige Milward is a mounting injury crisis, which saw his side limited to one rotation for much of the contest.

“We must’ve ticked the footy gods off – we have suffered six key injuries in the first two rounds,” he said, while remaining tight-lipped about diagnoses for the unavailable players.

Milward conceded that an inability to defend their own turnovers hamstrung his side, in stark contrast to the Devils’ efficiency in this area.

Parkside have curiously conceded and scored 145 points across the first two weeks of the season, with their next chance to build some percentage coming against fellow northsiders Marcellin, after the bye. Next week’s slate also sees the banged-up Prahran facing the monumental task of slowing the competition leaders in AJAX, while PEGS play host to Mazenod and the Gryphons face St Bedes/Mentone.

Local bragging rights will once again be on the line in the match of the round, where second-placed Parkdale will be hosted by third-placed Beaumaris, at Banksia Reserve.

RISING STAR NOMINEE

ROUND 1

Kensley Ward (Westbourne Grammarians)

Women’s Rising Star Nominee

The VAFA congratulates Kensley Ward from Westbourne Grammarians Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 1 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Kensley was nominated after an impressive 8-goal haul in a dominant performance in just her third senior match!

What the club said:

Westbourne senior women’s coach Chris Grant was full of praise for the young forward, saying: “Kensley is a strong-bodied, powerful medium-sized forward with excellent hands in the air and a beautiful kick of the football. She has come through our junior programs and is now starting to adjust to the experienced and mature bodies of the senior women’s competition.”

Having developed her craft in the club’s junior pathways, Kensley also gained valuable experience at reserves level throughout the 2024 season. Now stepping up to senior footy, her Round 1 performance is a sign of big things to come. Congratulations, Kensley!

Men’s Rising Star Nominee

Harry Warfe (Old Xaverians)

The VAFA congratulates Harry Warfe from Old Xaverians Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 1 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Harry snagged seven goals on debut for Old Xaverians Under 19 Premier Men’s side in the first match of the season.

What the club said:

Warfe is no stranger to terrorising opposing defenders. In 2024, he kicked 90 goals as a small forward in his first season of senior footy at Omeo Benambra, where his coach was Old Xav, Daniel Betts. The young gun’s biggest haul was ten, his smallest, one: and he also kicked every number in between over the season, capping his effort with three in the Grand Final, to win the best on the ground medal. He played his junior football at Lakes Entrance Football Netball Club and came to the Old Xavs over the summer after Betts contacted Football Director Matt Ball through Ted Woodruff. If Harry continues to play as well as he did on Opening Day, he will surely be considered for senior selection soon.

Piper Phelan (Beaumaris)

The VAFA congratulates Piper Phelan from Beaumaris Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 2 Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star. After an electric start in the VAFA with two best on grounds nods and a goal a game, Piper has stood out with her dynamic presence in the midfield and ability to influence around the ground.

What the club said:

Piper is new to our club, coming from QLD, and has a stellar record as a junior winning many awards across her young career. She has come to us from Sandy Zebras VFLW, with friends who play for Beaumaris attracting her to the club. Piper is a strong hard-running midfielder with exquisite skills left and right, and the versatility to play all over the ground.

On being announced as the Anytime Fitness Rising Star for Rd2, Piper commented: “Obviously, it’s a great honour for me to be nominated. I’m loving my time in Victoria and enjoying the environments that both the Zebs and the Sharks provide. I’m disappointed to have been diagnosed with an AC joint injury that came out of my Round 2 match but hopefully I’ll be back in 3-4 weeks.”

Men’s Rising Star Nominee ROUND 2

Women’s Rising Star Nominee

Noah Yze (Old Melburnians)

The VAFA congratulates Noah Yze from Old Melburnians Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 2 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Noah starred in his first appearance with the OM’s, proving an asset to the side with lightning speed and marking strength, and finishing with an impressive 5-goal haul.

What the club said:

Coach Nathan Brown said “Noah’s play his first game in his first year with Old Melburnians Football Club last Saturday in Round 2. Last year he was finishing school and playing Coates League at Chargers, as well as a bit with Casey VFL. Noah has a busy schedule with his teams’ clubs training, so we are lucky to have him with us as his local club.

Noah has great athletic ability (tank/speed combo gold) and he’s as strong as an Ox, tied in with his beautiful all-round skills. He’s got a really bright future and has already shone in the early VFL rounds. He can play anywhere/any line on the ground as he did last week.

Old Melburnian’s President, David Elam added “that it is a privilege to have such a quality young person in Noah as part our OMFC Community and playing in the VAFA competition. OMFC and VAFA provide a pathway for Noah who is trying to live the dream as young players do. We need to be that pathway and enjoy the journey.”

DIVISION 1 MEN’S

Kew stamp their authority with a crushing win at home

Round 2 was a mixed bag with plenty on offer in Division 1. From high-scoring games to a couple of thrashings, to close contests that came down to the final quarterthe second round of play had it all. One of the biggest storylines to emerge from the weekend was the strength of Kew who now sit atop the ladder with a big win at home against Elsternwick.

Ormond continued their strong start to the season with a 91-point victory over Therry Penola. Ormond started well with the first couple of goals of the match, however before they could settle in, Therry Penola quickly struck back with two goals of their own, with a narrow 5-point margin at the quarter time siren.

The second term saw Ormond break away and make the most of the opportunities that presented themselves, putting on a dominant display up forward with eight majors.

Their 36-point lead at half-time expanded to 61-points at three-quarter time and by that stage it was clear they had the momentum to carry this game home, which they did in style with another seven goals in the last quarter. Samuel Bailey starred with six goals for the winning side.

A high-scoring game in Mount Eliza saw Old Peninsula take the chocolates over UHS-VU by 31 points. This game had swings and roundabouts with Old Peninsula up by 10-points at quarter time, yet UHS-VU had a dominant second quarter, moving the footy around the ground with ease to bank seven majors and an eightpoint lead at the main break.

However, the home side quickly re-grouped and retaliated to take charge in the second half and controlled the majority of play until the final siren to take the four points.

After kicking four goals last week, Old Peninsula’s Bailey Payze well and truly backed up this week with eight goals in this game, whilst despite their team’s defeat, Jeffrey Fox, Jacob Hunt and Archie Frazer stood up for UHS-VU with good performances.

In the biggest win of the weekend for this section, Kew showed that they are a side to be taken seriously as they

thrashed Elsternwick by 137-points. The Bears virtually silenced the Wicks in the first quarter, keeping them scoreless with a 35-point lead.

Kew only reached greater heights in the second quarter and continued to pile on the scoreboard pressure in the third term to acquire a massive 99-point advantage by three-quarter time. Elsternwick kicked two early goals in the final term, but Kew quickly responded with seven consecutive majors.

On a tough day for Elsternwick, Daniel Marchese impressed for his side with two of their five goals, whilst Kew’s William Llewelyn starred with six goals and will be a key player for Kew this season. Kew finished the game 24.26 (170), so the pain could’ve been a lot worse for Elsternwick if Kew had been more accurate in front of goal.

Despite a valiant final quarter effort from the Monash Blues, the Preston Bullants walked away winners at Frearson Oval having done the hard work in the first three quarters.

The Bullants managed to control the game on their terms in the first half as they converted opportunities inside 50 into goals which saw them with a healthy 27-point lead at the main break.

The third quarter had good periods for both sides, but the Bullants continued to lead the way and built up their lead to 36 points. The Bullants kicked the first goal of the final term and with their lead now 42 points, many thought the game was all but over. But to Monash’s credit, they continued to put in consistent efforts and kicked four consecutive goals to keep themselves in the game.

Alas, it was a case of too little too late as the Blues lost by 18 points and Preston were rewarded for their early effort.

Both coming off Round 1 wins, it was Oakleigh who managed to go 2-0, as they defeated Brunswick by 39 points. Oakleigh led this game from start to finish and were in control early on, commanding a 20-point lead at quarter-time and increasing that by half-time.

Brunswick clawed back some ground in the third quarter with a couple of goals from Oscar Watt firing them up, however Oakleigh were just the better side on the day, putting the game to bed in the last quarter and returning home worthy winners.

Luke Ashen made another significant contribution for Oakleigh with five goals to his name.

The competition resumes after the Easter break with five new match-ups ready to do battle in Round 3.

Undefeated Ormond host the winless UHS-VU in their first home game of 2025 as they look to go 3 and 0. UHS-VU will be looking to sustain a four-quarter effort this week after struggling to keep up with oppositions in the second half of their first two games.

Therry Penola host the Monash Blues with both teams aiming to register their first win of the season. Therry Penola narrowly avoided relegation last season so will be acutely aware of the importance of early wins to avoid 9th and 10th position on the ladder. Whilst the Monash Blues have a point to prove under new Coach Andy Batten, after coming down from Premier C.

The 6th placed Preston Bullants host Elsternwick who are yet to register a win. This game could go either way, and Elsternwick particularly will be eager for the challenge and ready to bounce back after their big loss to Kew.

The match of the round in Round 3 would have to be Oakleigh hosting Kew at Scammell Reserve. This promises to be an attacking, high-scoring game, with Oakleigh’s Luke Ashen and Kew’s William Llewelyn both sitting in the top five Division 1 goal-kickers at the early stage of this season. Whoever wins this game will make a big statement that they are a serious contender in 2025.

Brunswick host the undefeated Old Peninsula. This is another game that should be tightly contested as Brunswick looks to halt the high-scoring Old Peninsula who have cracked the triple digits on the scoreboard on both occasions they’ve played this year, one of only two teams to have achieved this feat.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S

Undefeated trio set the pace in Round 2

A big round two saw just three teams remain undefeated as premiership favourites start to emerge in Therry Penola, Glen Eira/Old McKinnon and Monash Blues. All three teams look like they will be tough to stop this season. At the other end of the table Power House, Old Haileybury and Hawthorn are all chasing their first 4-points of the season.

Both Richmond Central and Old Haileybury came into Round 2 with points to prove, off the back of tough defeats in Round 1. Looking to find their feet in the competition, it was Richmond who lived up to the challenge, defeating Old Haileybury by 12 points.

It was a great tight contest, however, had Richmond been more accurate in front of goal they would have piled on a larger margin, kicking 14 behinds for the game. Both teams dropped off in the last quarter, with three behinds to Richmond the only sore registered for the term. Erin Eldon was best on ground, with two goals to her name, whilst Sorcha Kerins and Rionach Nealon rounded out the top three on ground for Richmond. Zahra Clavarino, Jasmine Carty and Ruby Murdoch were the best for Old Haileybury.

Next up, Richmond will look to boost their credentials against the inform Monash Blues. Across town, Old Haileybury will come up against Hawthorn, with both teams searching for their first win of the season, with the loser to go 0-3.

Hawthorn suffered their second consecutive loss by more than 14 goals, this time falling to Therry Penola by 97 points. From the first bounce, Therry Penola were well on top of Hawthorn with no signs of a comeback, piling on eight goals in the first half and another nine in the second. Kicking 13 behinds for the game, Hawthorn are lucky the Lions were not more accurate in front of goal.

The Hawks managed just three goals for the game, via Emogen Johnson and captain Tessa Bodin. They’ll want to find some more avenues to goal quickly, having kicked a total of just 19 points for the season to date. For the Lions,

Abbey Duggan kicked five goals, Eliza German four and Ruby Gazzo another three, whilst captain Melissa Halton was best on ground with two majors of her own.

Next up, Therry Penola will play Power House in what will be an intriguing matchup, whilst the Hawks will host Old Haileybury as they look to avoid going 0-3.

After an impressive win over Power House in Round 1, Whitefriars faced another big test in playing heavyweight of the competition Monash Blues. It was a cracking contest, with Whitefriars down by five points at half-time, as a result of Monash’s inability to capitalise in front of goals in the first half. However, it was all square at the final change with Whitefriars mounting a comeback and attempting to snatch victory. Monash Blues’ two goals in the final term and their defensive pressure saw them run out 14 point victors.

Bella Giannangelo was best on ground for Whitefriars, whilst Annalise Vine and Andrea Belmonte had two goals each. Gemma Cowin and Hannah Konstanty also had two goals apiece, whilst it was Tiarna Byrnes who was best on.

Monash will host Richmond in Round 3, and Whitefriars face a tough but exciting match up against Glen Eira at Caulfield.

Glen Eira/Old McKinnon remain undefeated with a 12-point victory over Oakleigh on Saturday morning. It was an impressive fightback and all-round performance, given that the Gryphons registered just one behind in the first quarter. From the second term, the Gryphons had the upper hand for the remainder of the game, registering 5.4 to Oakleigh’s 2.3.

Jasmine Ballestrin kicked all three of Oakleigh’s goals whilst Sienna Bernardo was also impressive. The Gryphons had five different goalkickers, with Stella Wilson and Cecilia Mcintosh the best on ground.

Next up, Oakleigh will look to bounce back in a tough match against the Hampton Rovers, whilst Glen Eira will host Whitefriars.

St

Mary’s,

Old Yarra continue to dominate early

Four teams sit undefeated and four teams remain winless after two rounds of the Division 2 Men’s season.

Old Yarra continued their hot start to the season, winning their second consecutive game by triple figures as they steamrolled Aquinas by 117 points.

The Bloods broke through early, with Sam Glennie kicking the first goal of the game. But it was one way traffic for much of the first half after that point, with Old Yarra kicking the next 10 goals on their way to a 48-point lead at half time.

The Cobras continued to run away with the game in the second half, kicking 11 goals to one. Max Parkes was particularly impressive, registering four of his five goals after the main break.

Old Yarra coach Nathan Monaco was impressed with the team’s defensive efforts, conceding a solitary behind in the final quarter this week against Aquinas after holding South Melbourne scoreless in the fourth quarter last week. He praised Eoin Hanrahan and Will Fleming for their strong performances in the back half in the early part of the season.

Bloods coach Craig Glennie was proud that his team never gave up but conceded Old Yarra were too good, spreading the ground well and capitalising on Aquinas’ turnovers.

St Mary’s Salesian made it two wins from two home games to open the 2025 season following their 140-point thumping of Hawthorn at Ferndale Park.

The Saints led from start to finish and maintained a high level of offensive output throughout the game. St Mary’s had 11 different players hit the scoresheet, with Jacob McElroy (seven) and Clay Tait (four) doing the majority of the damage.

Saints coach Clay Tait was pleased with how well the team held their structure for most of the contest, which had been a key focus in the lead up to the match.

“Our midfielders were really strong all day, but they didn’t go kick chasing. They stuck to their structures and played within the team game, which was great. That’s something that we’ve been focusing on throughout the pre-season,” he said.

Hawthorn coach Mark Murray acknowledged his team didn’t have any answers to stop the rampaging Saints.

“It’s one of those games that you can sit down and review it to the nth degree, or you can just forget about it. And we’ll just forget about it because we know that’s not us. We know that won’t happen again,” Murray said.

MHSOB bounced back last week’s narrow loss to Hawthorn, defeating Canterbury by 41 points to claim their first win of the season.

Six points separated the two teams after the first quarter, before the Unicorns kicked five goals to two in the second to extend their lead to 27 at the half.

Cobras coach Steve Brown played two debutants yesterday, after 10 players ran out in the red, black, and yellow for the first time last week.

“When you have 12 new players at any footy club, it’s going to take some time to gel. Hopefully it will be sooner, but as long as the intensity is there it will be fine,” he said.

Sebastian Gotch fought hard for the Cobras, kicking seven goals.

“He’s a really good person and an older head around the football club,” Brown said of Gotch, while also commending ruck man Troy Wilson and assistant coach Michael Topp for their efforts.

St John’s and Whitefriars played a thrilling back-and-forth match at Thomas Carroll Reserve that saw the Friars steal it late and record a two-point victory.

The JOC’s held a seven-point lead at quarter time and a 12-point lead at the half before Whitefriars struck back in the third quarter, kicking six goals to three to lead by seven points going into the final quarter.

The home side kicked the first two of the fourth quarter to take back the lead; the first of four lead changes in the last. Sam Kieseker again led the way for the Friars with six goals, but it was Tim Angus and James Perrin who kicked them when it mattered late, turning a 10-point deficit in the 23rd minute into a two-point victory at the final siren.

Friars coach Luke Matthews acknowledged the efforts of Kieseker and Angus when the game was on the line.

“Sam obviously kicked a bag, but he laid a massive rundown tackle when they were on the fly and got rewarded for it. He’s really stepped up in that leadership role after our captain went

down in the practice game. And Tim Angus is really growing in the midfield this year, he was fantastic all game.”

JOC’s coach Tim Edwards was particularly impressed by brothers Clayton and Harvey Emery.

“Harvey’s pretty good most weeks, but I’ve never seen Clayton play like that before. They both took their game to another level,” he said.

West Brunswick proved too strong for South Melbourne at Ransford Oval, running out 36-point winners.

After a tight first quarter that saw the Magpies hold a five-point lead, the home team upped the ante in the second, kicking 3.2 while keeping their opponents scoreless to lead by 25 points at half time.

The Bloods came out strongly after the main break, kicking four of the first five goals in the third quarter to get within five points, before West Brunswick stole back the momentum and kicked six of the last seven to win comfortably.

Magpies coach Regan Tait highlighted the efforts of ruckman Mitch Graham and midfielder Cameron Ralph, who excelled despite the hot conditions that left many players battling cramp in the second half.

“Cam just knows how to take the game on. He’s so aggressive and has a great footy brain – all the little moving parts that can turn a game on its head,” Tait said.

“And Mitch’s work ethic around the ground is amazing… his defensive mindset as a ruck is fantastic and he covers the ground so well.”

South Melbourne coach Nick Abbott thought his team showed some good signs but hoped their efforts would be more consistent in the coming weeks as they look to establish a more settled squad, having used 33 players across the first two rounds.

After a league-wide bye next week for Easter, the Friars will look to continue their winning ways as they host Canterbury at Whitefriars College. The Unicorns welcome West Brunswick to Melbourne High School, while South Melbourne could be in for another tough day when they host St Mary’s Salesian at the Lindsay Hasset Oval. Aquinas and St John’s will both be aiming for their first win of the season when the JOC’s travel to Ringwood, while Hawthorn host ladder leaders Old Yarra at Rathmines Road Reserve.

DIVISION 2 WOMEN’S

De La Salle fends off a brave Carey in a blockbuster, while Brunswick records first home win

Box Hill North recorded their first victory of 2025, knocking off Wattle Park by eight points in Round 2 of Division 2 Women’s.

Heading into the sheds at halftime, Box Hill North found themselves trailing by three points. Although Wattle Park fought on bravely, Box Hill North rallied in the second half, kicking three goals to one, securing victory. On top of this, a two-goal haul and gritty performance from Sophie Marinos helped guide Steve Jackson’s side to the promised land. Jackson will be proud of his side’s toughness and ability to bounce back following a difficult Round 1 clash against De La Salle. A disappointing day in the end for Wattle Park, not being able to maintain their second-quarter efforts for the whole contest. The Animals now sit at the bottom of the Division 2 ladder, with a game against in-form De La Salle to come.

La Trobe Uni made it two wins on the bounce, but not without an early scare from a brave Parkside outfit. The Devils led at both first-half intervals, forcing La Trobe to come from behind. La Trobe head coach Samantha Greene was proud of how her side capitalised on the inefficiency in front of goal from Parkside to run away with the four points. “It was a super competitive game all day, and Parkside had our measure for the better part of three quarters, but they left the door ajar for us, and I thought we had a really strong last quarter,” Greene said.

Parkside will be somewhat frustrated but also confident with their start to 2025, as their performances in the opening two fixtures leave the side with plenty of positives. The win for La Trobe propels them to the top spot on the ladder, setting it up for a box office clash against fellow undefeated side MCC after the break in Round 3.

Brunswick recorded an emphatic home victory, smashing UHS-VU by six goals. After only managing three wins last season, Brunswick will be rapt with the offseason progress shown. Head coach Sasha Dougherty credits the win to the strong home support from the fans, who spurred the team to their first home win since Round 11 last year. Dougherty was also impressed with her side’s cohesion, which led to five different goal kickers on the day. “We had positive vibes all around, great voices on the field, and even better link-up play,” Dougherty exclaimed.

A puzzling performance from UHS-VU will leave head coach Alex Henry scratching his head, after the side looked poised to take another scalp following their narrow Round 1 win. The club will be looking to leave this loss in the past and come back stronger at home in Round 3 against Parkside.

The Division’s “New Kids on the Block” MCC ran out fourteen-point winners against Aquinas. The club is beginning to make inroads in Division 2, proving very hard to come up against. Remarkably, the home side had no bench rotations, making the warm conditions at Beaumaris Secondary College even more testing. Despite this, MCC controlled the game right throughout, showcasing serious resilience.

Elite forward pressure and an exceptional four goals from Anna Harris provided the home side with a twenty-one-point buffer at three-quarter time. Aquinas managed to keep their opposition scoreless in the final term but unfortunately left their comeback a little too late, unable to make up significant ground in the final stages. They now find themselves 0-2, a predicament not thought of at the start of the season, as they made their way down from a higher division in 2025. Aquinas will be hoping to regroup and go again after the break against Old Carey at home.

The game of the round certainly didn’t disappoint, as Old Carey and De La Salle put on one hell of a spectacle. Although De La Salle were inaccurate in front of goal, kicking 2-9, they managed to hold on and record an important seven-point win. Neck and neck pretty much all morning, De La Salle had to dig deep and stay courageous. It was the effort behind the footy that Head Coach Andrew Donnison was pleased with, full of praise for his side’s ability to stop Old Carey from scoring.

Donnison admitted that travelling out to Carey was always going to be tough due to how well the home side plays on their ground. “They play their ground extremely well. They have a quality midfield, and to deny them the opportunity to get quick ball into their forward line was good to see.” Although ecstatic about his side’s start to the season, Donnison admits his side has plenty to work on and is not getting carried away with the early success. Old Carey certainly loses no admirers after that display, showing a competitive nature that is well and truly capable of going deep into 2025.

DIVISION 3 MEN’S

Top sides deliver statement wins while optimism remains high around the competition

Round 2 in the Division 3 Men’s competition seemed to have a little bit of everything across the five games as the season’s storylines begins to appear.

Box Hill North claimed their first win for the season against La Trobe University being 12-point winners at home.

The Demons looked the goods from the start as they got out to a red-hot start by scoring the first four goals for the quarter with Sean Donavan being the only one to score multiple with the Trobers left goalless.

However, the tables were soon to be flipped with La Trobe rallying their way back in the game in the second with five goals with no reply to lead by 10 points into the half.

It became a tight affair throughout the third and most of the fourth with neither team being able to get beyond a two-goal lead.

But in the end, Josh Alderson and player-coach Beau Parthenides both scored goals late in the final quarter to seal victory for the Demons.

Parthenides noted the importance of this win to help reconfirm that his game plan is working saying “The first win when you’re changing the culture can be the hardest.”

Wattle Park has provided a controlling win against last year’s minor premiers in North Brunswick beating them by 63 points.

Much of the focus for this week for the Animals’ coach Glen Hopkins was being able to control the ball and the pace of the game which they were able to do to great effect.

This was particularly evident in the second quarter when they were able to convert their high possession rate and link up chains into scores as they managed to kick 7.4 while holding the Bulls to only two goals for the quarter which saw the game being put out of reach.

For North Brunswick, this result may be somewhat of a surprise considering that last year it was often them delivering these sorts of margins to the competition.

But despite the result, they still remain one of the favourites for the premiership and with the Easter bye this week, this should give them plenty of time to reset and focus on the rest of their season.

Richmond Central continues their undefeated start to the season with a 46-point win against Albert Park

Similar to last week, the Snakes were slow to get out of the blocks with Albert Park taking a five-point lead into quarter time with the Falcons’ ability to win the ball in the contest and ability to transition the ball quickly being well and truly on display.

While the Snakes did have the lead at halftime, coach Michael Motta admitted that he thought the Snakes were lucky to be as close as they were in the first half, but he noted that when his team needed to, they could turn it on.

Richmond Central were able to move the ball quicker in the second half and create more chances on the scoreboard which would eventually show as they built out a comfortable lead in the third quarter.

For Albert Park, it is still taking some time to gel with their new players, but the signs of improvement are there even from just last week.

Coach Jack Aimes noted that the Falcons were able to improve and create stronger chances inside 50 resulting in them kicking 10.11 compared to last week’s 6.12 against North Brunswick.

Power House have backed up their dominant performance from last week with a massive 212-point victory over Eley Park on their home deck.

It was a clinical performance from Nick Cox’s men who dominated from start to finish as they were able to win the ball at the centre bounce and score with ease.

In front of goal, Jack Taylor-Evans managed to kick a whopping 10 goals which sees him head into Round 3 leading all VAFA competitions with 17 goals across his two matches.

He would be joined by his teammate Matt Auchettl who also scored 10 goals for Power House.

Tyler Ames, James Kervin, Mitchell Newman and Benjamin Circosta would round out the best on grounds for Power House.

Despite the result, Sharks coach Matt Embling was still proud of his team’s effort and their ability to continue to have a red-hot crack throughout the entire match.

Swinburne University has gone from losing by 140 points last week to being 100-point winners in a massive turnaround against Chadstone

Some big performances from their captain Simon Heather and vice-captain Nick Ferguson who combined for 16 goals were the main catalyst for the Razorbacks who have drastically improved from the last time they played Chadstone.

But coach Johnny Andrinopoulos was most pleased by the fact that all 22 players contributed to the result showing a complete effort.

While it was another defeat, there are signs of the improvements that Chadstone have made from last year over the pre-season. During the third quarter, they managed to score 24 points to Swinburne’s 25 showing that they can be competitive against other Division 3 teams.

This will be used as evidence by Chadstone coach Ian Ledder as proof that when the Synners are able to stick to their game plan, they can be far more competitive than they were last year.

Looking ahead to Round 3, all ten sides will be using the Easter break as a chance to recharge their energy to come back raring to go. Power House will be hoping for an even bigger win when they host Chadstone in what will be a battle not too dissimilar from David vs Goliath. La Trobe University will host their first home game of the season against the undefeated Richmond Central.

The Razorbacks will look to make it two wins on the trot at home as they play Eley Park. Although Eley Park did beat Swinburne last season which will give the Sharks hope. Both North Brunswick and Box Hill North will be motivated by the prospect of being 2-1 after their clash when they play each other at Allard Oval. And in the second instalment of the Battle of the Parks in Division 3, Wattle Park will play host to Albert Park.

DIVISION 3 WOMEN’S

Round 2 rumbles: Ormond holds, Mazenod marches, Saints run riot

The second round of the 2025 season is in the books leading into the Easter break. With four teams undefeated thus far, it has been an exciting first two rounds. Let’s dive into the highs and lows of the weekend past.

Prahran secured their first victory of the season on Saturday morning, defeating Elsternwick by 10 points at Toorak Park, 6.5 (41) to 4.7 (31). It was an even spread of goal kickers for Prahran, with six individual contributors booting a single major each.

Elsternwick relief heavily on the accuracy of forward Ashira Chait, who starred with three goals and was named best on ground for a dominant performance.

Prahran can rest a little easier heading into the bye, knowing they have secured a spot in the middle order for now, after getting those illustrious first 4 points.

Old Camberwell continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 23-point victory over Albert Park, 6.2 (38) to 2.3 (15). Both teams had a battle in a tight first half, with just 5 points separating the two sides at the main break.

An impactful 3 goal to 1 third quarter was exactly what the Weller’s needed to run home with the win. Bridget Facey led the charge in front of the big stick with a terrific three-goal display, while captain Alannah Frampton was named among the best, alongside Jess Humphries and Gabriella Bianco.

Despite the result, with key personnel and key players out, Albert Park had key standouts. Normally stepping in as the team manager, Sarah Grace was impressive on debut, being a presence on both ends of the grounds, with one tackle, one mark and one goal.

Bonnie Grining and Alicia Lyons were named best on ground for the Falcons, with both players stepping up in key moments; Grining kicking one goal.

Mazenod have moved up into second on the ladder after defeating Canterbury by 41 points, 7.12 (54) to 2.1 (13).

Whilst it was a tightly contested first quarter, a three-goal third quarter was enough to keep the winning streak alive.

Lara Del Conte continued her brilliant form to the season, finishing with three goals for the game for the Nodders. While a comprehensive defensive effort held Canterbury to just one goal in the first half and another one in the second half.

This win adds a healthy percentage boost for Mazenod as they sit among 3 others undefeated sides in Division 3 Women’s.

Canterbury will need to find a way to win on the road as they are set to play their third away game in Round 3 after the Easter bye weekend.

St Mary’s Salesian dominated from start to finish in a 69-point thrashing over the South Melbourne Districts, 11.5 (71) to 0.2 (2).

It was a slow start on the scoreboard from both ends with no goals registered in the first term. From that point onwards, St Mary’s kicked 4, 3 and 4 goals, taking full authority over the match. Lucy Dobbyn was a standout in the side’s victory, kicking four goals for the match.

The Bloods couldn’t find their feet and struggled to get into the match as the onslaught from the Saints kept coming.

Although not at Lindsay Hassett Oval, their best chance at securing their first four points will come in Round 3 when they come up against Canterbury at Ian Johnson Oval, in the familiar surrounds of Albert Park. This 9 th v 10 th clash will ensure one of the two sides walks away with their first victory, unless of course we are dealt our first draw of the season.

In a game that ebbed and flowed, it was Ormond who held strong through the four quarters to claim victory over North Brunswick, 6.6 (42) to 3.4 (22). Ormond held a significant 35-point advantage at the 3-quartertime break, of which North Brunswick valiantly fought to minimise in the final term.

Despite being under siege for much of the match, North Brunswick won the final 20 minutes kicking 2.3 and keeping Ormond scoreless. Alas, it was not enough to claw back the full margin and the Monders claimed the four points.

DIVISION 4 WOMEN’S

Chargers fire, Sharks bite, and Westbourne cruise in Round 2

Round 2 of the Division 4 Women’s 2025 season delivered some surprising results, as Port Melbourne Chargers, Westbourne Grammarians and Beaumaris consolidated their title for the teams to beat this season.

Unfortunately, the first match of the round between Oakleigh and Old Xaverians was not contested as Old Xavs forfeited, handing the Krushers the four points by default. As much as it was a disappointment not to see either team in action at Scammel Reserve, Oakleigh will be relieved to be on the winner’s list following a 75-point shellacking at the hands of Port Melbourne Chargers in Round 1. Meanwhile, Old Xavs will have their eyes set on their Round 3 clash with second place Westbourne at home next week.

Over at Righetti Oval, Port Melbourne Chargers (6.6.42) banked an impressive 41-point win over St Kevin’s (0.1.1) to continue their fantastic start to the 2025 season.

Although not all was breezy for Port Melbourne, after St Kevin’s brought the fight in the first half despite nothing to show for on the scoreboard. A third quarter blitz by Fleur Wilson (2 goals), Olivia Box (1 goal), Claire Peters (1 goal) and Chumin Zhou (1 goal) swung momentum back in favour of the Chargers. What seemed a resolute defence for the Saints in the first half crumbled under the heat of Port Melbourne’s forwards.

It was this consistent pressure around goals that contributed to the 7-goal buffer maintained until the final siren. It wasn’t all negative for St Kevin’s, as Kritikides, Hoal, Stephenson, Leckey, Lupson and Holden performed admirably in the loss.

On the horizon, St Kevin’s travel to McCalister Oval to take on Round 2 winners West Brunswick, while table-toppers Port Melbourne play Monash Blues at Frearson Oval.

Undoubtedly, the match of the round took place between West Brunswick (5.2.32) and the Monash Blues (2.7.19) at McCalister Oval. In a see-sawing contest that had multiple lead-changes, West Brunswick held their nerve to win by a gritty 13-points.

It is needless to say that straight kicking was the difference between the two sides, as West Brunswick capitalized upon their opportunities in front of the sticks. Inaccuracy was much of the story for the Blues in the first term, however, did not dictate the second quarter as they held a 5-point advantage at the main change. West Brunswick’s Kate Dean seized her moment to put West Brunswick back in the lead early in the third quarter.

A heavily contested game ensured the scores were level throughout much of the final term, before Melanie Chea, Dominque Grabau and Le Rossignol kept Monash at bay with decisive second half goals – to run out winners by 13. Vuong, Yonehara, Bellicanta and Carpenter were among the Blues’ best but could not will their team over the line.

Monash will look to bounce back against ladder-leaders Port Melbourne while the Magpies take on St Kevin’s next week.

In the mid-day timeslot at the historic W.T.Peterson Oval (formerly Brunswick Street Oval), Westbourne Grammarians flexed their muscles in a 23-point victory over Fitzroy.

Such was the impressive nature of the win, that Westbourne held Fitzroy goal-less in the first half, while booting 3 goals of their own to lead by 19.

Fitzroy’s first major occurred at the 12 th minute mark of the 3rd term to cut the margin back to 13. However, that was the final glimmer of hope for Fitzroy as Westbourne frequently hit the scoreboard in the second half courtesy of goals from Choate, Moodie and Gashi.

Fitzroy earnt a consolation prize late in the fourth quarter, but it proved not enough as Westbourne basked again in the winner’s sunshine. Other significant contributors to Westbourne’s victory include Elissa Natale, Natasha Dunn, Te Aroha Hapuku and Jazmyn Mathers.

As the weekend was marked by close matches, the contest between Beaumaris (15.12.102) and Preston Bullants (0.0.0) was far from a nail-biter. Beaumaris eager to kick-start their 2025 campaign after a win-byforfeit in R1, caught fire against Preston in a 102-point mauling at Banksia Reserve.

A quiet first term by both sides was dispelled quickly by Beaumaris booting 5 un-answered goals in the second quarter to lead by 41 at half-time. This domination was largely a result of Isabella Allen’s stellar 7 goal performance emulating Jesse Hogan’s 9 against the Eagles last week.

Unfortunately, the Preston defense had no response to Allen’s full-forward clinic. 4.4 goals in the third quarter, then a further 5 in the fourth stretched the lead to a mammoth 102 points at the final siren.

Despite the margin, Preston was commended for their attack on the ball all day, headlined by Jenkins, Marks, Luci, Braini and De Santis to name a few. Preston will keenly look forward to their R3 home clash with Fitzroy, while Beaumaris will host Oakleigh.

Expect some more fireworks in Round 3, as Beaumaris and Oakleigh are sure to catch the attention of fans in the match of the round. Another warm Melbourne week ahead will set the stage for some epic battles across Round 3 of Division 4 Women’s.

ROUND 3 TIPS

HOLMESGLEN U19’S REPORT

Blues, Cardinals hold steady in close encounters, St Kevin’s unleash

Competitive clashes and monster results underscore Holmesglen Under 19 Premier Men’s in Round 2, as an early group of contenders takes shape.

The round kicked off under Friday night lights, with a dominant second half from St Bedes/Mentone Tigers discarding Caulfield Grammarians’ competitive efforts.

With both sides seeking their first win of the season, the game began in a back-and-forth affair as each club attempted to establish their own advantage.

The Fields’ Aleksander Tamaressis was influential early with a goal, while ruckman Oliver Sail’s stunning ability to break two tackles and unload a 50 meter bomb symbolised Caulfield Grammarians hard-to-match start. However, SBMT kept the scores within three points at the first change.

The game remained within single digits for the majority of the second term too, before an inside 50 for Caulfield was failed to be capitalised on and rebounded by the Tigers. St Bedes/Mentone quickly delivered the ball back inside their forward arc, before a chase down tackle on an unaware Fields’ defender led to a goal from advantage and effectively caused a 12-point swing in the Tigers’ favour.

It set up a 15-point buffer at halftime, a lead soon to grow.

Caulfield Grammarians were held goalless in the third term and kicked just one in the last, as the deficit increased from 15 points to 66 by the final siren.

Caulfield Grammarians coach Cooper Rule said his side “lost their way” in the second half.

“I thought our intent and pressure around stoppage was where it needed to be early, but in the second half we gave them too much room and allowed them to spread, especially through handball chains,” Rule said.

Rule commended his ruckman Sail as well as Henry Martino, who has earned votes in the best in both games.

SMBT’s Jack Meredith, Oliver Moodie and Jai Pugsley had three each while Oliver Mangoni was named best on ground.

Old Scotch have delivered a stirring fourth quarter to record their second win against a much-improved De La Salle

De La suffered a 91-point defeat at the hands of St Kevin’s in Round 1 and the response was clear on Saturday. Taking it up to last year’s preliminary finalists, De La Salle went goal for goal with the Cardinals in the first half.

Old Scotch trailed by five points at quarter time and then led by one at the main break, in a low scoring affair of just 29-28.

De La edged ahead again in the third term to bank a two-point buffer, with the game’s highest margin yet to exceed 13 points.

De La nailed the first in the final term to extend their buffer, but it is where their control ended, with the Cardinals breaking the dam wall, kicking four goals and a behind to create a game-high lead of 17 points.

De La Salle’s Corey Mackie would peg one back late, before Old Scotch’s David Swan kicked the sealer, seeing Old Scotch secure their second win of the season in a mature 17-point victory.

Ashley Margerison was best afield for De La Salle, while Brody Rossney kicked three goals. Skipper Finn Nankervis was amongst Old Scotch’s best, as was George Coldwell.

Reigning premiers Old Brighton have yet to put a foot wrong in 2025 with a comprehensive 139-point win over Williamstown CYMS

The Tonners held the CYs goalless for three quarters at Brighton Beach Oval, extending their lead into triple figures midway through the third term.

Williamstown were able to snag a few goals late to show some promise heading into the Easter bye, but the damage had been well and truly done.

Old Brighton Coach Travis O’Donohue said defensive pressure across a four-quarter effort was the key to such a dominant result.

“The boys put in a complete four-quarter performance and applied fantastic pressure and were able to cause plenty of turnovers in our forward half,” O’Donohue said.

“Our back six were excellent all day and were able to shut down most opposition entries, particularly in the first half. Our midfield continued to improve their connection, and it was pleasing to see some really unselfish play in forward line.”

That unselfish brand was clear on the stat sheet, with 12 individuals snagging goals in the encounter. O’Donohue championed Max Lorden, who banked five majors, as well as Cooper Dowe’s efforts in the midfield.

Focus now turns beyond the bye to Round 3, where O’Donohue hopes the momentum will continue against “yardstick of the competition” St Kevin’s.

It will be a juicy top of the table clash, as St Kevin’s made light work of Hampton Rovers to produce a second-straight percentage boosting win.

Even more impressively than the Tonners, SKOB held the Rovers to just one point through three quarters of football while bombarding the goals, scoring 10 goals in each of the first and second quarters.

The demolition job didn’t stop there, as St Kevin’s lead ballooned out to 175 at three-quarter-time, before a 45-11 final quarter ended the game’s margin at 209.

The win provides St Kevin’s with an overall percentage of 738.3% after Round 1’s emphatic victory, and now sits the club comfortably in pole position.

Archie Steedman, Chevi O’Neill, and Stefan Somogyi were best for the Rovers, while Benjamin Palmer was St Kevin’s’ best afield with six goals.

Anticipated to be match of the round, Old Xaverians and University Blues delivered a quality game of Under 19’s Premier football.

Coming off a landslide victory, Xavs were beat to the punch by the Blues who had tussled their way to victory over Williamstown CYMS in Round 1. That gritty performance evidently came in handy during the ugly hardball moments on Saturday, as the Blues never relinquished their lead from quarter-time despite the close result.

The Blues led by two goals at the first change, before extending that margin to 19 points at halftime. The Xavs and Blues continued their goal-for-goal affair in the second half, but the lead crept out to four goals, with University ultimately holding on for a 24-point victory.

Round 1’s Anytime Fitness Rising Star and Old Xaverian Harry Wharfe booted three majors, maintaining his position as the competition’s leading goalkicker, while Sam de Steiger kicked five for the Blues. Orlando Keleman and Carl Ziebarth were amongst the Blues’ best too.

With Easter approaching, players will have the weekend to refresh before getting right back into the swing of things in Round 3.

Caulfield Grammarians will travel to the Uni Blues’ home deck to avenge an 0-2 start to the season, while Hampton will host SBMT to hopefully produce the same outcome.

A potential ripsnorter between Old Scotch and Old Xaverians would have been the game of the round if it weren’t for the mouthwatering grand final rematch between St Kevin’s and Old Brighton, who were split by just four points on both occasions in the 2024 finals series.

Two sides unlucky to not record a win thus far will battle for their first triumphs of the season to close out Round 3, with the CYs hosting De La Salle.

MILESTONES

Maegan Miller (Hampton Rovers)

50

50

Maegan Miller will run out for her 50 th senior women’s game for the Hampton Rovers this weekend. As an original Rovers junior, Maegan is enormously respected and loved for her amazing efforts she gives to her team and club. We wouldn’t swap our champion centre half forward for anyone. Congrats on the milestone Maegan!!

Nikki Berto (Elsternwick)

Congratulations Nikki Berto on your 50 th game for Elsternwick Football Club! Nikki has been a cornerstone of the club since day one, serving as the inaugural team captain in 2021 she has continued to set the standard ever since. Beginning her footy career at the Wicks, she’s earned a spot in the Team of the Year, has taken out leading goal kicker, finished runner-up Best & Fairest multiple years in a row and, finally capped it off by taking top honours as the 2024 Best & Fairest. She may be small, but her courage and hunger to win the ball is unmatched. Nikki›s leadership and dedication to the Wicks has shape the heart of the team and her impact will be forever felt.

Shannon Elphick (Elsternwick)

50

Congratulations to Shannon Elphick on her 50th game for Elsternwick Football Club! Since the day she arrived, Shannon has been a force to be reckoned with through the centre of the field playing as an inside Midfielder and Ruck. Her fierce attack on the footy, tireless work ethic, and unmatched determination has made her someone the team looks towards as a benchmark. Shannon leads by example and always gives her all. This year as one of the team’s Senior players, Shannon has stepped up and has become a key voice at the Wicks, which hasn’t gone unnoticed by her peers, as she was voted as co-vice-captain for 2025. Congrats Shan!!

Michael Romano (Parkside)

Michael has been a vital part in the club success over recent years stepping up to captain the club in 2022 at 22 years of age Michael has been a leader at the club during the rise through grades his achievements including winning senior best and fairest in 2022 and being captain of the 2023 premiership side where he kicked the match winning goal. Not only has his impact on the field been massive but off the field Michael is a role model for juniors at the club coaching a junior side over the past couple of years. Congrats Mick on 150!

Jordan Tonkin (AJAX)

Congratulations to Jordan ‘Tonks’ Tonkin, who plays game 200 this weekend. An incredible effort, for a guy who has played as a key position player across every line in his career, Tonks has consistently stepped up wherever the team has needed him, putting his body on the line week in, week out. A tremendous leader at the AJAX Football Club, captaining the Reserves side for multiple years, culminating in a well-deserved Reserves Best & Fairest win in 2023. He’s continued to defy the odds and proven that age is just a number. A great person to have in your team and a better person off it - AJAX is a better place because of Tonks and we wish him well in game 200 and beyond.
