Community football has always been about more than just the final score. It’s about friendships that last a lifetime. It’s about belonging to something bigger than yourself. It’s about shared wins, hard-fought losses, and the kind of loyalty that’s built in mud, sweat, and the roar of the crowd.
At the heart of every club is a simple idea: we look after each other.
But quietly, a new challenge has started to creep into our clubrooms and our sidelines — one that’s harder to see than a torn hamstring or a missed goal. Online sports gambling is taking root in community football and it’s putting the health of our players, our culture, and our future at risk.
Recent studies show one in three young men involved in community footy feel pressured by their mates to place a bet. One in five players aged 15–34 have bet more than they can afford to lose. These aren’t faceless numbers. They represent our teammates, the mates we train, play, and grow with. The teammates we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with and celebrate wins and losses with.
When gambling harm takes hold, it doesn’t just affect one person — it affects entire teams, clubs, and community. Gambling harm can chip away at confidence, isolate people who are struggling and often makes asking for help feel too hard. It’s why The Real Stakes Round matters.
The Real Stakes Are Bigger Than You Think
The name says it all: the real stakes aren’t about a few dollars lost on a bad bet. They’re about wellbeing, and keeping our clubs strong, supportive, and safe for everyone who walks through the gates.

becomes normalised, it’s no longer a private choice and starts becoming a social pressure. The Real Stakes Round is about breaking that cycle.
This round aims to remind everyone that real mates don’t pressure each other to bet. Real mates have your back, whether you’re kicking the winning goal or sitting out with an injury. Real mates care about your future, not just about the next multi.
Changing the normalisation of online sports gambling doesn’t happen overnight. It happens conversation by conversation. Session by session. Round by round.
At the heart of every club is a simple idea: we look after each other.
The Real Stakes Round is a new initiative bringing clubs across Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia together to tackle online sports gambling harm at its roots. It’s about recognising the signs before someone falls through the cracks and knowing how to start conversations early.
Throughout May, clubs will take part in The Real Stakes events, from training sessions to workshops, webinars, and clubroom discussions. Ambassadors like Jacob Weitering are helping lead the charge, reminding us all that strength isn’t measured just in tackles or goals, but in how we care for the people around us.
Changing the Culture, Together
It’s easy to think gambling is just a bit of fun — that it’s harmless banter between mates. However, when gambling
Your Club Has the Power to Make a Difference
Every club that steps up to support the Real Stakes Round sends a clear message: We care about our people. We will stand by our players. We are bigger than gambling harm.
By getting involved, you’re helping create an environment where players feel safe to speak up if they’re struggling — without shame and without judgment. You’re helping to build clubs that focus on what really matters: connection, resilience, and a genuine love for the game.
If you’re a player, this is your chance to be a role model. If you’re a coach, it’s your chance to lead by example. If you’re a club volunteer, it’s your chance to create real, lasting change.

The Real Stakes Round is about more than awareness — it’s about action and about building a future for community footy that puts people first. Let’s protect the next generation of footballers coming through. Let’s make sure community clubs remain places of pride, support, and belonging — places where young people can thrive, not struggle in silence.

Lions & Blacks on the boardWilliam Buck Premier Men’s Round 3 in Review
Collegians opened their 2025 account with an impressive Anzac Day display against Old Scotch at Camberwell. The Lions kick-started their season with a gritty, hard-working four-quarter performance, taking control with 5 goals to 1 in the opening term.
The Cardinals clawed back within 16 points, before the Lions booted the only 3 goals of the third term to open up a 35-point lead, which they maintained in the last, cruising to their 11th win over Old Scotch from the last 12 meetings.
Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “We were out to continue the upward trend. This was evident in the first quarter, with our pressure and intent being at a high level. “We held onto the lead throughout the day, but not without a few flurries from Scotch, who kept coming. “Overall, it was a very pleasing day for us, with the boys putting together a well-rounded 4 quarter effort.”
Mark Gnatt (Old Scotch): “A disappointing performance for us. We were beaten in some of the fundamentals, and Collegians were first to the ball and then turned that into scoreboard pressure. “We look forward to the opportunity to respond against Xavs this week.”
University Blacks also replicated their 2024 start by bouncing back to defeat University Blues in the Uni Derby at Melbourne Uni Oval. The Blacks seized control with the first 5 goals of the match, holding the Blues goalless until midway through the second term.
The Blues won most of the stat categories across the day and threatened a comeback midway through the third. But goals to Matthew Grocott and Tom St Clair early in the last quarter effectively put the contest to bed – the Blacks home by 35 points to post a third consecutive win over their arch-rival.
Dale Bower (Uni Blacks): “We always look forward to these games. We have been building over the past few weeks, and we believe our performances and score lines were not a true reflection of our ability. “We played the way the game needed to be played in the conditions and were able to convert enough opportunities.”
Matt Smith (Uni Blues): “It was really disappointing, given the occasion. Blacks just wanted it more than our boys.
“All of the key stats from the game would suggest we should have been well on top. However, Blacks won more of the important moments, and it essentially came down to who wanted it more. Unfortunately, they were the side that was more desperate and played to the conditions better.”
The thriller of the round was at Toorak Park as Old Xaverians came from behind to pinch a classic against Old Haileybury. The Bloods booted the first four goals, before Xavs reduced the deficit to 8 points at the opening change. The Bloods then added 5 goals to 2 to hold a 28-point lead at the major break, before Xavs lifted in the third term, booting 4.5 to 2.2 to close within 13 points.
That surge continued into the last quarter, and a running goal to Xavier Austin entering time-on reduced the margin to 2 points. The home team added a further 3 behinds to edge in front for the first time at the 28-minute mark. Denis Symeopoulos slotted the winner two minutes later to seal a memorable 7-point win.
Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “Out-pressured, outworked and out-executed for the first half by a very good Old Haileybury side. Full credit to OH for the intensity and effort they brought. “After halftime, we settled into our type of football, got our hands dirtier and managed to grind our way back. It’s never easy turning things around in a game like that, so super proud of the boys to have responded after halftime to get the points in another tightly contested game.”
Daniel Ward (Old Haileybury): “Disappointed to be leading a quality team at half time, and then at the last change, and not to come home with the 4 points. “When the game was on the line in the last quarter, Xavs deserved to win. They were cleaner with their ball use and decision-making under pressure. Another lesson for our group on how we need to do everything right at this level to have success.”
St Kevin’s moved to 2-and-1 with a dominant win over De La Salle at Waverley Oval. The second quarter saw SKOB take control, slamming on 7.2 unanswered to rocket away to a 50-point half-time lead. The hosts stabilised in the third term, but in the end, it was St Kevin’s with a comfortable 74-point win.
Patty Kerr and Sam Critchley combined for 10 goals for the winners, while Luke Winter was superb with 28 disposals. Fraser Cameron, Nick Bufalo and Tom Filipovic all found plenty of the footy for De La, who remain the only winless team after the opening three rounds.
Anthony Lynch (St Kevin’s): “I was really pleased with our boys’ consistency over the four quarters and our ability to execute from back half to forward. “We had real improvement in some key focus areas from the first two rounds, which pleased me, but we still have a bit to work on over the coming weeks as we continue to try and improve.”
Nick Hyland (De La Salle): “I felt we were in the contest for a lot longer and had larger portions of certain quarters on our terms. Again, some lapses in our intensity and concentration really cost us. “Although it was a loss, I feel the group is improving significantly each week.”
The final game of Round 3 saw last season’s minor premiers Old Brighton hand St Bernard’s their first loss. The Tonners kicked the first 4 goals to open a 20-point lead before St Bernard’s did a better job of denying Old Brighton the ball in the second term. But the Tonners ramped up their efficiency, still managing to add 5 goals to 2 to lead by 38 at the major break.
The second half was far more even, with the visitors only adding 5 goals to 4. The final margin was 54 points – the Tonners celebrating Finn Campigli’s 100 th game in style by kicking a game clear atop the ladder.
Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “The away trip to Bernard’s is one of the most challenging in the VAFA, so it was terrific to have banked 4 points off a really professional game from our group. “We had even contributions across most of the team, with some impressive impact from individuals. Tom Burnell worked incredibly hard, along with Harry Hill and Kai Dimattina. “Campbell Tweedie and Darcy Gilbert defended and gave drive from half back and Jordy Segar played his role very impressively.”
Steve Alessio (St Bernard’s): “It was a tough day at the office. “Marcel Bruin has got his boys playing some great footy, and they controlled all facets of the game from start to finish. We couldn’t match their slick ball use and outside run today. “We will re-group this week and look to ensure we can continue our positive start to this season.”

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER
The Bears and the Fields notch thrilling victories to take the chocolates in return from Easter break
After what felt like an eternity, we finally had a return to William Buck Premier Women’s this past weekend, with an interesting slate of games on Saturday followed by a standalone fixture on Sunday between Old Scotch and MUWFC.
Launching Round 3 of Premier Women’s, we were treated to two enthralling games between teams attempting to put their stamp on the competition.
Newcomers to William Buck Premier, Old Geelong — who have impressed to start the year — hosted last year’s finalists , Caulfield Grammarians, at Como Park. The OGs had control of the game through three quarters, holding a ten-point lead at the final break. However, the Fields were too strong in the final term, running out three-point winners.
Old Geelong coach Jack Crameri was pleased with the performance despite the result and is looking forward to the challenges ahead. “The result was the only disappointing part about the day — the performance was really positive. We are looking forward to another big challenge next week against Old Scotch.”
West Brunswick were attempting to make it two wins on the bounce when they travelled to Victoria Park to face Kew. The Bears, however, responded from their loss to Old Geelong the week prior and put together a strong four-quarter performance, leading at every break.
Despite the Magpies’ three-point defeat, coach Ryan Wardel was upbeat about his side’s performance and outlined the need to start games faster. “The game was decided in the first five minutes. We weren’t switched on and they kicked three goals early. We managed to fight back well, but against good sides like Kew, we can’t allow that to happen.”
For the Bears, Ash Melnikas had a standout performance, kicking five goals, asserting her dominance around the contest, and providing first use for Kew throughout the four quarters. The win moves the Bears into equal third on the ladder.
Williamstown CYMS 12.11 (83) defeated Old Yarra Cobras 2.0 (12) to notch their first victory of the 2025 season. The CYs’ win came off the back of a brilliant first half in which they kicked nine goals to zero.
Alessia Acquaro impressed with six majors, while Sofi Georgas and Loren Mills added two apiece in the 71-point victory. CYs coach Xavier Smith was ecstatic with his side’s ball movement and cohesion inside forward 50 and believes they will take a lot from the win. “We’ll take a lot of confidence out of that performance — we’ll keep looking to get better and fine-tune a few areas.”
For the Cobras, Lara Moussa and Josephine Muscat put together strong individual performances with a goal each, and coach Michael Talbot praised the effort of Leanne McHenry, who provided grit and experience in the middle.
Talbot referenced the Cobras’ poor first half and the need for improvement going forward into the remainder of the season. “The first half lacked intensity and didn’t apply pressure. There’s still a lot of growth left in the group, but we need to be more consistent.”
St Kevin’s looked to keep their undefeated start to the season rolling with a matchup against Fitzroy at Righetti Oval. The 2024 Grand Finalists took home the chocolates in a close-fought game, 5.6 (36) to 3.2 (20), to remain unbeaten and atop the ladder with three wins.
Hannah Smith continued her dominant start to the season, kicking four majors for St Kevin’s, and coach Tom Purcell sang the praises of Molly Wilson, Angelique Argiros and Bella Rees.
Meanwhile, the Roys move to sixth on the ladder with the defeat and will look to bounce back against the Cobras next weekend. Fitzroy coach Nathan Jumeau felt his side could learn a lot from the experience of playing against one of the competition’s best. “Learning how such a well-drilled team works together in the middle of the ground is something we will look at and take a bit out of, hopefully.”

ROUND
The final stanza of Round 3 was a standalone Sunday clash between Old Scotch and MUWFC. The latter were no match for the Cardinals, who piled on 23 majors to win by 152 points.
Cardinals coach Dean Anderson was pleased with his side’s performance, particularly their connection between midfield and forward line. Anderson also pointed to a challenging month ahead. “We have some really challenging weeks ahead and look forward to playing Old Geelong this week.”
For MUWFC, coach Michael Goldsmith continues to focus on the positives and small wins from each game his side participates in. “We took some real positives away — our players never stopped contesting. We’re building habits that will hold up as the seasons go.” Eve Sheehan, Maddison Noack, Asha Price and Jolyn Collins all put in strong performances for MUWFC in defeat.
At the conclusion of Round 3, St Kevin’s and Caulfield Grammarians remain undefeated, while Old Scotch and Old Geelong round out the top four.
Round 4 shapes up to be an interesting weekend of footy, with a top four clash between Old Geelong and Old Scotch, Kew travelling to play Caulfield Grammarians, and Old Yarra Cobras facing Fitzroy. Meanwhile, West Brunswick have a tough test against St Kevin’s, and rounding out the weekend is another Sunday matchup between Williamstown CYMS and MUWFC.

Hoeing in: Old Ivanhoe go 3-0 for first time since 2016
Old Ivanhoe is Premier B’s last undefeated team, defeating the Old Melburnians in the Hoers’ first senior men’s game at Elsternwick Park since 2010. The 14.12 (96) to 14.9 (93) win secured Old Ivanhoe its first 3-0 start to a season since 2016, where they would go on to start the season 6-1 in Premier C.
The Hoers took a first-half advantage with a seven-goalto-three second quarter, one OMs coach Nathan Brown would later identify as the difference between the two sides, and held firm in the third, going into the final term with a slender lead - and the wind.
But the OMs were superb in the last - even getting a pair of late chances to hit the front - ultimately falling short by three points.
“With the way that we’ve played this year in last quarters, we were reasonably confident we’d be able to run over the top of them,” said Old Ivanhoe coach Jarrod Gieschen. “But (the OMs) just never gave up. We were very lucky in the end to hang on.”
For the second time in three games, the OMs fell short by under a goal, coach Nathan Brown identifying the similarities between his side’s Round One loss to Old Carey and this defeat.
“Really proud again of our group who just don’t give up at the moment, which early days I love about them,” said Brown. “(Their) footy was better than ours. We’ll keep chipping away at what works for us.”
In the resumption of the ANZAC Day match between Fitzroy and Williamstown CYMS, it was Con Terzoglou’s CYs that broke through, beating the Roys for the first time since Round 17, 2018.
“We’ve struggled at this venue, it’s a nice one to put on the bingo card,” said Terzoglou after the game, the CYs having kicked clear in the last ten minutes to win 11.9 (75) to 7.13 (55).
In a close final term, and despite appearing “spent” at the 15-minute mark of the last by the estimation of the coach, the CYs stormed home with the last three goals of the game, turning a two-point lead at the 21-minute mark of the quarter to a 11.9 (75) to 7.13 (55) victory.
“To be able to push out and not (play to) hold on, I think that was critical,” said Terzoglou. “Even in the third, when we got challenged (and) looked like we were tiring, the fact that we kept running .. I just think that’s a testament to some of the work that we’ve been doing, but also maybe some of the maturity from the younger group.”
Fitzroy coach Travis Ronaldson, speaking shortly after the final siren, said he was pleased with his team’s start to the game, but is still searching for a full game of consistent play.
“(We’ve) obviously had significant turnover and change from the way we finished the season last year,” said Ronaldson. “It’s going to take some time for a young group to gel and build that connection to enable us to really string the four quarters together.”
Old Carey’s impressive graduate season continues to turn heads, the Panthers travelling to Gordon Barnard Reserve and breaking loose late in the final term in a tight contest with Old Camberwell.
It was Panther Mitch Wooffindin, as it has been often over the course of his storied career, who broke through a late stalemate, punching through his second of the afternoon to establish a two-goal advantage, before bubbly leftfooter Eddie King nailed two goals in two minutes to seal the deal.
The 20-year-old was one of coach Luke Giles’ best in the 13.19 (97) to 11.7 (73) win that sees the Panthers right in the mix with Premier B’s finest.
“My summation is that we’re a trustworthy side in this competition,” said the Old Carey coach on Sunday evening. “The win against Old Camberwell on the weekend was the final bit of belief that we needed to know that we can compete week-in, week-out.” “It’s another good reminder to our players that if you’re off a little in B grade you will get punished on the scoreboard,” said coach Neil Connell.
The theme of Round Three was quick breaks in the second half - and for Old Geelong coach Nick Dixon, that was the tale in a key win at home over Caulfield Grammarians
“We just tried to settle them down a little in the third quarter, we started to be a little more clinical in the way
we moved the ball,” he explained, after two points separated the sides at the long break.
“Coming to Como (Park) is different for any side, because of how big and wide it is. I thought our ability to play the way we wanted to on Como was really good in that third quarter.”
Focusing on quality entry and time spent in the forward half, the OGs kicked 6.4 (40) to 1.2 (8) in the third, flipping a twopoint half time deficit into a five-goal three quarter time lead, and from there held fast to win 14.10 (94) to 10.9 (69).
Connor Dixon was best-on-ground with six goals and has added a defensive flair to his forward craft over the pre-season. “He’s really led the way with pressure and his tackling down there - I think his first two or three goals were from defensive effort turnovers,” Nick Dixon said.
Caulfield Grammarians coach Paul Satterley lauded the OGs for their control of the ground and their superb third quarter.
Old Trinity is the fifth squad to start the year 2-1 and enjoyed the services of ex-Giant and Demon Adam Tomlinson in its 14.11 (95) to 10.3 (63) defeat of the Hampton Rovers
“Tommo’ was listed with Sorrento, he’s on North Melbourne’s VFL list … he’s a Trinity boy, I know him really well, he just reached out, he desperately wanted to have a run,” said coach Donald McDonald, with North Melbourne VFL on a bye week.
“It was a great learning opportunity for our younger players who I felt took giant steps forward,” said Hampton coach Marty Pask, who says it’s a “delight” to coach the rapidly progressing group, despite an 0-3 start to life in Premier B
“We currently have 14 players playing under 21 years of age … we will gain experience as the weeks go by and have a really good mix of players who are up to the level. This will set our side up for many more years to come and we keep evolving.”
This week, the Rovers take on Old Geelong at Como Park while the Ts host Old Melburnians in what promises to be a critical contest as the ladder begins to take shape. Williamstown CYMS travel to play Old Ivanhoe, Fitzroy will be desperate for a win when it hosts Old Camberwell and Old Carey meet Caulfield Grammarians.

Premier B powerhouses emerge
After 3 rounds of footy in Premier B Women’s, Beaumaris and Old Brighton have proven themselves to be the frontrunners with both sides yet to drop a game. Highlights of the round included Marcellin and Old Xaverians getting on the board with their first wins of the season, while Port Melbourne Charges recorded a statement triumph over the Vultures.
The stage was set for a thrilling opening match between Old Brighton and Old Melburnians, with both sides coming into the game with a 2-0 win-loss record.
Old Melburnians started the game with a greater sense of urgency, scoring the only goal of the first term to earn the lead heading into the first break. However, the experience of the Tonners shone through in the second term, as they found a way to stifle Old Melburnian’s characteristic fast ball movement while piling on four majors of their own to take a commanding 23-point lead into the main break.
The Omlettes showed grit to work their way back into the game in the second half, matching Old Brighton for goals as both sides showed periods of ascendancy. Nevertheless, the damage had already been done, with the Tonners running out 27-point victors.
Acknowledging that the turning point came in the second quarter, Old Melburnians’ coach Nic Stephens identified the team’s need to be able to “wrestle back momentum during the quarter rather than resetting after the break.”
Despite the result, Stephens was full of praise for his team’s resilience, particularly highlighting Harriet Kogler’s defensive efforts and Olive Mclean’s forward craft.
Stephens also commended the Omlettes debutants, with five girls pulling on the Old Melburnians guernsey for the first time. “I’m super excited to see how they develop as part of the squad as the season progresses.”
For Old Brighton, coach Andrew Grant was particularly pleased by his side’s ability to put pressure on the opposition when they had the ball, calling out the individual performance of Sophie Grant, who starred at half back.
In a dominant display, Marcellin overpowered an undermanned Coburg outfit with a final score of 16.14 (110) to 0.2 (2). From the first quarter, Marcellin set the tone, leading 6.4 (40) to 0.1 (1), and continued to extend their lead throughout the game.
Marcellin coach Paul Harvey was happy to see his team implement the skills and tactics they had been working on over the past few weeks, with several players getting to reap the rewards on the scoreboard.
Captain Alana Pane led through the middle, finishing with two goals to her name, while T Zagontinos and Zoe Glascott found themselves busy up forward, finishing with respective hauls of four and five.
Harvey gave special mentions to Ava Menzies, who excelled in her 50 th game, as well as Glascott, who played a true team game, unselfishly sharing the football around.
Despite the lopsided scoreline, Coburg’s Lucy Dawe, Elise Putyra, and Michelle Costa were among the best for their team, showing resilience and determination in a tough outing.
It was a nail-biting affair at Basil Reserve, where Old Xaverians secured their first win of the season, edging out Westbourne Grammarians with a final score of 4.3 (27) to 3.7 (25).
The match was tightly contested throughout, with Old Xavs breaking away in the second to lead by 9 points, before Westbourne fought back in the third to bring the scores level again at the final break. Two behinds to Old Xaverians in the final term proved to be the difference, allowing Xavs to take home the chocolates for the first time this year.
Despite being happy with how his team responded in the third, Westbourne coach Chris Grant acknowledged “Old Xavs were just a bit cleaner in the critical moments in the last.”
Ability to finish the job in front of goals was another clear differentiator, with Westbourne having more scoring shots but lacking accuracy.
Westbourne’s captain, Morganne Gaston, led from the front with a stellar four-quarter effort, while Kiara Henry also made a big impact, finishing with two goals.
For Old Xavs, Melissa Poulton caught the attention of the coach for her instrumental role in the victory, while Anabelle Gangi (1 goal) and Amelia Menegola (2 goals) were also key in getting their team over the line.
In a commanding performance, the Port Melbourne Chargers overwhelmed the Parkdale Vultures with a final score of 23.14 (152) to 0.0 (0). Port Melbourne
dominated from the outset, leading 7.4 (46) to 0.0 (0) at the end of the first quarter and never looking back.
Coach Harriet Cooper attributed the victory to their dominance in the midfield, particularly praising Sunday Stoney’s ruck work. “Sunday’s incredible work in the ruck gave us a significant advantage at stoppages,” Cooper said. “The girls really controlled the flow, won crucial tackles, and distributed the ball effectively.”
Mia-Rae Clifford was the standout on the day, kicking a remarkable 11 goals, while Georgia Harris added six of her own, showcasing their formidable partnership up forward, which dates back to years of playing together at the St Kilda Sharks.
Cooper emphasised the importance of understanding the strongest team composition moving forward to maximise chances of success. “We’ll be using the upcoming training sessions and potentially some internal scrimmages to really evaluate different player combinations and individual roles,” she explained.
In a tough start to the season for Parkdale, the form of Jesicca Welford, Breanna Allen, and Breanon Di-Giovambattista continues to impress, with the trio battling hard no matter the conditions.
In a decisive encounter at Mentone Reserve, Beaumaris continued their winning streak, defeating neighbourhood rivals St Bedes/Mentone Tigers with a final score of 10.7 (67) to 2.0 (12).
Beaumaris set the pace early, leading 5.0 (30) to 1.0 (6) at the end of the first quarter and maintaining dominance throughout the game.
Rosie Byrne and Sophie Crofts were the stars for Beaumaris, each kicking three goals. St Bedes’ best players included Paris Xerri, Chloe Saultry, and Maddi Wilson.
From limited opportunities, St Bedes’ Isabella Gietzmann and Jacklyn Honey managed to score a goal each, with Gietzmann now tied at the top of the goal-kicking tally with 11 goals, alongside Georgia Harris and Mia-Rae Clifford.
The match highlighted Beaumaris’ ability to score quickly, setting them up as a serious contender for this season. Meanwhile, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers still hold fourth place on the ladder but have another difficult week ahead with an away game against Old Brighton.

A big bag and bigger wins characterise Round 3, as the ladder begins to take shape
A near-perfect first quarter from coach Owen Lalor’s Parkdale Vultures side has condemned Beaumaris to a 1-2 start in Premier C. Parkdale’s clinical midfield led the Vultures to a 10.4 (64) to 1.0 (6) lead at the first change, eventually running out 21.10 (136) to 11.7 (73) winners, with Lalor now questioning just how to bottle his side’s early brilliance.
“We were really good around the footy – on top at stoppage and clearance, and our forward half pressure was terrific,” he said, while crediting unsung flanker Lloyd Bailey for his efforts in this space.
“He’s a barometer for us with his pressure – his tackling and smothering led to multiple shots on goal,” continued Lalor.
Others to draw the praise of the seventh-year coach were skipper Jack Edwards, and ruckman Jarrod Peake, who battled gamely against Sharks’ stalwart Callum Heath, who Lalor praised as one of the league’s best players. On the back of lace-out service, Ryan Macdermid kicked four goals, in a pleasing return to form.
Heath again found himself in coach Josh Bourke’s bests, alongside usual suspects like Josh Trew and Callum Linehan. Beaumaris’ next chance to square the season’s ledger comes against Parkside this Saturday, who are coming off a close win over Marcellin, in a game of shifting momentum.
After a strong opening quarter, Parkside squandered a three-goal lead in the second. It wasn’t long before a 5 goal to 1 third quarter saw them regain an advantage not to be relinquished, finishing 12.5 (77) to 10.7 (67) victors. Devils coach Rick Frost pinpointed a ‘lack of pressure’ as the catalyst for Marcellin’s second quarter outburst and was pleased by the uptick in this space after a half-time address that centred on it.
Max Balassone’s timely contested marks buffeted Marcellin’s charge in the last quarter, while Mitch Lawson, and skipper Michael Romano, playing his 150th game, were also afforded mentions for their performances in Frost’s postgame.
Marcellin coach Bernie Dineen, while impressed with his side’s second quarter, was left ‘pretty disappointed’ by his Eagles’ inconsistency, but believes there is plenty of
growth left in his side, especially with the return of captain Matthew Capetola, imminent. The goals and explosiveness provided by James McArdle on-ball, the games of Tom Dennis and Ry Elphinstone on the wing and in the backline respectively, and the maturity and ball-use of the returning Shaun Tyquin, all yielded mentions from Dineen.
AJAX’s unbeaten start to the season continued, with the Jackas showing composure in shaking a plucky Prahran outfit. An undermanned Two Blues did well to be within five goals at the main break, before the class and size of the ladder leaders propelled them to a 16.19 (115) to 4.6 (30) victory.
Postgame, AJAX coach Lachlan Buszard said, “it was a very pleasing second half, and a game full of learning for our group.” The first-year coach expressed pride in his side’s ability to find avenues to goal despite the suffocating defensive tactics employed by his opposite number, which included rolling wingmen and half-forward flankers behind the ball.
Prahran coach Craige Milward was pleased with his undermanned side’s ability to implement some semblance of his system for two-and-a-half quarters and insists he’s ‘not fearful’ of how the rest of the season will pan out, despite a winless start.
“We’re excited to attack the last two-thirds of the season, after we get some significant contributors back,” he said. Luke Gorman’s broken foot, and boom recruit Patrick Marks’ hamstring injury are considered medium-term prospects, while the season of Josh Taylor is unfortunately over, after an Achilles injury. Milward is pleased with the depth the club’s recruiting has afforded them but is wary of ‘robbing’ his Reserves side of too many pieces.
Milward highlighted Riley Hogan’s effectiveness in his run-with role on the always dangerous Toby Sheezel and is excited to be back at Toorak Park this weekend, where the Two Blues will meet St Bedes/Mentone Tigers. After missing at the weekend, Noah Hura will make his second senior appearance of the season, after a seven-goal haul in the Reserves, in Round 1.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers resounding 21.15 (141) to 7.14 (56) victory over Glen Eira/Old McKinnon was headlined by an emphatic 12-goal performance from Jack
Behnk. Coach Brad Berry believes the haul is an excellent reward for Behnk’s off the ball efforts and credits his midfielders for deep entries that allowed Behnk’s bodywork to come to the fore.
“It was his patch in the second quarter that basically put the game out of reach,” explained Berry. “He really drives our team-first approach, so a day out for him was really pleasing.”
Matt Lehpamer’s late withdrawal, citing soreness, brought veteran Jack Hellier more game time, with Berry pleased with the glimpses, and leadership, the former Collingwood VFL captain displayed. The versatility of Dan Garside was also a feature of the victory, with the penetrating kick and bigger body of the habitual half-back, providing ample cover in the midfield, when required.
A relatively strong first quarter for the Gryphons was made possible by the ruck craft of Lachlan Mirams, who consistently provided first use. Youngster Nicholas Mavropoulos again found himself in coach Guy Martyn’s bests, with skipper Stuart Carey also leading the way in the loss. The Gryphons must now turn their attention to a clash with PEGS this weekend, who toppled Mazenod, in the wet, this past Saturday.
After the 6.12 (48) to 4.6 (30) result, PEGS coach Rob Kerr credited his side’s ability to take territory in the third quarter for the victory.
“It allowed us to set up better behind the ball,” he said. “Blake Roach had a strong game; (he) won plenty of contested footy as a mid, and also sured us up down back for a period. Andrew McDonald had his best game – conditions suited his strong body,” Kerr continued. The return of experienced duo Cameron Livori and Zach Genovesi was cited as ‘helpful’ by the first-year PEGS coach, while conditions bore the brunt of the blame for the inaccuracy of both sides.
The performances of Mazenod’s leaders ensured their nominations in coach Peter Banfield’s bests, but Banfield will look to rejig a Nodders’ forward line he says is ‘not operating at present’. His side’s meagre total score of 30 on the weekend exists in stark contrast with the scoring prowess of their next opponent, in AJAX.
Round 4 sees Marcellin head south to Parkdale, Prahran host St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, and Beaumaris head to Alphington, to face Parkside. PEGS will travel to Carnegie, where Glen Eira/Old McKinnon will be waiting.

The Beaumaris Sharks unveiled a special ANZAC commemorative jumper in their home game against Parkdale Vultures.
FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
Maddy Seebeck (Old Geelong)
Women’s Rising Star Nominee
The VAFA congratulates Maddy Seebeck from Old Geelong Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 3 Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star. Maddy is a stalwart in defence and has impressed with her ability to disrupt the opposition’s forward progress and win contests.
What the club said:
Old Geelong’s Rising Star nominee, Maddy Seebeck, has made an immediate and lasting impact in her first year at the club. Recruited after a nudge from OGs star Milla Naylor, supported by the persistence of co-captain Celia Cody, Maddy has quickly become an integral part of the team — and a favourite around the club.
At just 20 years old, Maddy already boasts a highly decorated football resumé. She began playing in Year 7 at Ballarat Grammar, representing both her school and local club Lake Wendouree, where she won a Premiership and Best and Fairest in the same year. Her talent took her to the elite level, playing two years with the Greater Western Victoria Rebels and a further year with the Geelong Falcons in the Coates Talent League.
Despite being new to the OGs, Maddy has brought the poise and presence of a seasoned veteran. She’s become a vocal leader in the backline, guiding teammates with confidence and composure. Off the field, her relaxed nature and sharp sense of humour have endeared her to everyone around the club.
Coach Jack Crameri said: “Maddy has been a brilliant addition to our senior line up in 2025, she’s an intercepting key defender with a booming kick. She has a fantastic football brain and this is reflected through her positioning and timing to float into the contest for an intercept mark or past a stoppage for a handball receive.”
Only 3 games into her OGs career, we hope there are plenty more to come!
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Boston Dowling (Old Trinity)
The VAFA congratulates Boston Dowling from Old Trinity Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 3 Anytime Fitness Men’s Rising Star. Boston is a star in the making, already having significant impact for the T’s as well as at higher level, on Collingwood’s VFL list.
What the club said:
Old Trinity Senior Coach, Donald McDonald said of Boston: “Boston played one game for Old Trinity Seniors in 2023 while still in Year 12, representing Trinity Grammar at AGV level as well as playing for Oakleigh Chargers.
In 2024, Boston again represented Old Trinity for one game, in between his duties with Oakleigh Chargers and Collingwood VFL. This season, Boston has played two games for Old Trinity and has really made an impact, rucking as well as pushing forward and providing a strong marking option.
Boston has great agility for his size, a terrific competitive nature, and with more experience at senior level, we have no doubt he has an exciting future ahead of him. A very popular teammate who loves getting around his Trinity schoolmates, we all congratulate Boston on this terrific achievement of being nominated as a Rising Star.”

ANZAC Spirit: U19 Premier Men’s rivals show incredible sportsmanship after game abandoned
Following the Easter weekend break, football teams across the VAFA returned to action on a weekend inspired by ANZAC heritage.
The Last Post rung out across numerous grassroots grounds, but no game in the Holmesglen Under 19 Premier Men’s competition typified the ANZAC spirit more than the clash between St Kevin’s and Old Brighton
The esteemed rivals have seen epic encounters in recent history, including two four-point deciding results in last year’s finals series, the latter establishing Old Brighton as 2024 premiers. Both sides already look to be the benchmark of the competition again this season, and as the league entered its third round, both clubs were only separated by percentage atop of the ladder.
St Kevin’s began the game on top with momentum but were unable to convert, kicking 2.9 to the half, which allowed the Tonners to snatch a nine-point lead at the main break. SKOB plucked away back into the contest however, and at three-quarter-time it was 43-apiece and yet another blockbuster between these two sides looked set to play out.
However, five minutes into the final term, Old Brighton forward Max Lorden went to kick the football in the forward pocket, before a desperate St Kevin’s defender attempted to make a smother, accidentally running through Lorden’s leg. The sickening clash caused a lower leg fracture in between Lorden’s shin and ankle, with the distressing incident immediately pausing the game.
With an ambulance over half an hour away, play was abandoned with the scores sitting six points in favour of Old Brighton and 17 minutes to play. Old Brighton President Tom Clark shared his praise for Greenham and the sportsmanship of St Kevin’s as “SKOB initiated a decision to abandon the game so that Max’s health and wellbeing could be prioritised”.
“I can’t speak more highly of St Kevin’s coach Paul Greenham, his players, the St Kevin’s trainers and support staff who were all incredibly supportive,” Old Brighton coach Travis O’Donohue said.
“My thoughts very quickly turned to the kid’s wellbeing,” Greenham said.
It was a united stance between rivals, demonstrating a touching display of sportsmanship on a weekend dedicated to showing fair spirit, self-sacrifice and courage. All can be said for both St Kevin’s and Old Brighton.
In other action, the Uni Blues have continued their undefeated start to the season, dismissing Caulfield Grammarians by 98 points.
The Blues held the Fields to just two points at half-time and managed to establish a lead near a half-century by the main break, as they kicked seven second quarter goals after an inaccurate 1.7 first term.
That lead would continue to balloon out each quarter for the remainder of the game, restricting Caulfield to just 18 points as University romped to a third straight victory.
The Uni Blues’ victories have come hard-fought this season, but they have now established a solid early buffer on the competition. Orlando Keleman was once again the Blues’ best on as Charlie Cotter and William Richter both kicked four goals. Jake O’Halloran was best on for Caulfield.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers have continued to overturn their early loss with a destructive win of Hampton Rovers, holding the Rovers scoreless for the middle two quarters to collect a percentage-boosting win.
The Tigers were on song throughout all four quarters, holding the Rovers to just 16 points by fulltime. By the final siren, SBMT had established a 160-point margin.
Jack Meredith has now equalled early competition-leading goalkicker Harry Wharfe with his eight goals on Saturday, tying the Old Xaverian forward at 12 goals after three games. Angus Shepherdson was also best on for SBMT, while Jake Seddon and Cohen Friend were in Hampton’s best.
Despite a flying start to their 2025 campaign, Old Xaverians have been condemned to a secondconsecutive loss at the hands of Old Scotch.
The Cardinals led by just three at quarter-time, but the Xavs were not in the contest much longer. Old Scotch kicked the first four goals of the second term, before a late goal to Old Xaverians pinned the deficit back to 21 points.
While the deficit remained throughout the third term, the Xavs were not one to roll over when the going got tough,
with the Cardinals marginally increasing their lead to 29 points at three-quarter-time. However, a monumental defensive effort restricted Old Xaverians to one behind in the final period, setting up a comprehensive victory by 54 points and a position on top of the ladder for Old Scotch.
Tom Farrer kicked five for the Cardinals while Lachlan Macneil was deemed best afield, while Tommy Trist was Old Xaverians’ best.
De La Salle have claimed their first win of 2025 after handing Williamstown CYMS a third-straight loss to their campaign.
The game was held in De La’s favour for the entirety of the match, although the margin itself never exceeded more than five goals.
The CYs conceded the first 20 points, however midway through the second term they had whittled the lead down to three. De La Salle stepped back on the gas however, pushing the lead out to a tick under four goals at halftime.
The yet-to-win sides went goal-for-goal in the third term, but Williamstown allowed the lead to extend to a game-high 29 points, before some more back-and-forth scoring saw it cut to 28 by the penultimate siren.
The CYs charged home late, kicking three of the first four final quarter goals, and narrowing the lead to 13, before De La Salle’s Mack Higginbotham steadied the ship to see De La claim their maiden victory of 2025 by 21 points.
Higginbotham was one of De La’s best alongside Corey Mackie, while Andreas Martinez kicked two for Williamstown.
Williamstown CYMS have a tough encounter to get their season back on track with an away game against St Kevin’s in Round 4, while De La Salle will face another winless side in Caulfield Grammarians. Old Brighton takes on Hampton Rovers at home after their abandoned Round 3 affair.
St Bedes/Mentone Tiger’s clash with Old Xaverians is an intriguing matchup to watch as both sides look even after three games, with their most recent face-off won by just 16 points to the Xavs. Excitingly, Round 4 presents another top of the table clash between two undefeated sides as University Blues and Old Scotch are set to duel, with both clubs yet to put a foot wrong this season. Their 2024 finals clash saw the Cardinals claim a thrilling 15-point win.

After the siren goal sees Therry Penola win a thriller
The resumption of footy after the Easter break saw Therry Penola cause after-the-siren heartbreak for the Monash Blues’ faithful, in a moment that Daniel Cullian will remember with a goal after the siren to win the game on his debut. Kew and Old Peninsula continued to surge this week with two big wins, whilst Ormond also got over the line for their third consecutive win.
Ormond continued their undefeated run in 2025 with a 14-point victory over UHS-VU. The first quarter was relatively even with both sides experiencing passages of success and positive ball movement; however, it was the second quarter where the game opened up for Ormond.
The home side kicked five goals to UHS-VU’s two behinds to accumulate a healthy 35-point lead by half-time. In a remarkable turn of their fortunes, UHS-VU responded swiftly in the third quarter, piling eight goals onto the scoreboard to reduce their deficit to just nine points at three-quarter time.
Ormond managed to score the first two majors of the fourth term which gave them enough breathing room for the remainder of the quarter as they made it to the final siren and claimed the four points. Lachlan Crnogorac and Michael Corso finished the day with three and four goals for Ormond and UHS-VU, respectively.
A high scoring, thrilling final quarter, saw Therry Penola defeat the Monash Blues after the siren, by just one point. The first half belonged to Monash who were on paper the better side, taking a nine-point lead into the main break, however both teams would be ruing missed opportunities to execute in front of goal.
The Blues carried this momentum into the third quarter, building their lead-up to 19 points. It was clear at the start of the fourth quarter that a margin of 19 points could easily be overturned. This match was anyones for the taking and whichever side had the patience and resilience to execute a ‘four-quarter’ game would come out on top.
Therry Penola succeeded in kicking the first three goals of the last quarter to bring themselves right back into the contest. Monash quickly responded to put themselves back in front, but it was Therry Penola who finished the game as winners, thanks to after-the-siren heroics from
Daniel Cullian who on debut, slotted the footy through the big sticks to claim victory for his side.
As Monash have found out, footy can be a cruel game, as despite their valiant efforts, they left this match with no points, whilst Therry Penola walked away with four points.
The Preston Bullants have landed themselves a top four spot with a 68-point victory over Elsternwick Elsternwick started the game well with the opening goal, but Preston quickly fired back with three majors as they were successful in capitalising on opportunities inside 50. Preston continued this surge into the second quarter as they held the Wicks goal-less to lead by 35-points at half-time.
The Wicks clawed some ground back in the third quarter to give themselves a chance heading into the final term, but the Bullants were ultimately too strong as they piled on the pain with a further ten goals to win comfortably.
Elsternwick are yet to record their first win in Division 1, whilst Preston sit in the top four for now, with many teams hot on their heels. Alex Johnston and Dominic Douglas lead the way up front for Preston with five and four goals, respectively, whilst Elsternwick captain Julian Yeatman was influential for his side with five goals of his own.
Two of the strongest starters in Division 1 this season met-up at Scammell Reserve where Kew went home 39-point winners against Oakleigh. The first quarter was fairly slow by way of scoring, and whilst Oakleigh managed two goals, Kew’s forwards would’ve been causing frustration for their coaches as they kicked six behinds for no goals!
Kew’s inaccuracy turned into accuracy in the second term, as they quickly found their way in-front to kick five majors and hold Oakleigh goal-less to lead by 21-points at half-time. The Bears went on to continue to control the game throughout the third term, holding up well across the ground to deny Oakleigh scoring opportunities.
This was much the same throughout the final quarter as Kew claimed the four points to see them remain undefeated in their 2025 campaign. William Llewlyn continued his strong start to the season with six majors
to take his tally this season to 15 goals from three games, whilst Nicholas Torpey, Tim Scott and Patrick Ioannidis were amongst the best players for Oakleigh.
Old Peninsula defeated Brunswick by 42 points, not without needing to overcome a deficit that accumulated early in the game. On their home ground, Brunswick had the perfect start with three goals in the first quarter whilst Old Peninsula could only manage two behinds to take a healthy lead into quarter-time.
Old Peninsula responded in the second quarter with five goals to Brunswick’s three that wound their deficit back to just seven-points and set-up an exciting second half. Momentum continued to shift the visitors way in the third quarter as Peninsula capitalised on opportunities and found themselves with a narrow six-point lead at three-quarter time, which could’ve been a lot higher if not for some inaccuracy in front of goal.
Ultimately, Brunswick could not keep up with a surging, fastscoring Peninsula in the fourth quarter who controlled the play well to see themselves through to victory.
Round 4 is sure to see some movement on the ladder with well-matched teams scheduled to meet-up with one another.
Second placed Ormond hosts third placed Old Peninsula with both teams determined to keep their undefeated start to the season going. This will be both teams biggest challenge in the season thus far and is expected to be a close contest.
Another game that should be close is the Preston Bullants (4th) hosting Therry Penola (7th). Whilst the Bullants have notched up more wins on the board, Therry Penola will be looking to keep their momentum alive after Daniel Cullian’s after-the-siren goal to win their Round 3 match.
UHS-VU will be looking for their first win of the season when they host Brunswick. Brunswick started their season well with a big Round 1 win but have failed to reach those heights since then which UHS-VU will be looking to take advantage of.
Elsewhere, top of the table Kew play host to the Monash Blues who are yet to register a win, whilst Elsternwick who are also yet to register a win, will host Oakleigh, a side who have a point to prove as they look to break into the top four.

Haileybury on the board, as Power House cause an upset
With the Easter break, all teams came back refreshed and ready to fire across the ANZAC Day Long Weekend. In an unexpected result, Power House pulled off an incredible 17-point win, defeating the ever-impressive Therry Penola. Whilst Old Haileybury are celebrating after claiming their first four points to jump up to 7th on the ladder.
Glen Eira/Old McKinnon remain top of the ladder, with a 27-point win over Whitefriars. Glen Eira’s strong defence was on display, holding Whitefriars to just four behinds for the game, with their highest score two behinds in the second quarter. Glen Eira had the opportunity to kick away in the fourth quarter, to boost their already high percentage even more. However, in unfavourable Melbourne conditions added just another 4 behinds to their total to finish on 31 at the final siren.
Lily Fitzpatrick was best on ground for the third time this season, mounting a case to be one of the strongest formers in this year’s competition. Fitzpatrick also kicked a goal, making this the third game in a row she has booted a major. For Whitefriars, Mia Smith earnt her first best on ground nomination.
Next up, Glen Eira/Old McKinnon will look to make it four in a row when they travel to play Old Haileybury whilst Whitefriars will travel to play Therry Penola.
Power House recorded their first win of the season, with a commanding 17-point victory over Therry Penola. It was an even match up for the majority of the game, with Power House taking a nine-point lead into the second quarter. Power House kicked 3.5 after the half to the Lions’ 2.3 to take home the four points.
Despite the fairly even display of skill and grit displayed on field between the two sides, the deficit inflicted in the second term proved costly for the Lions to overcome. This upset win will give Power House a much needed confidence boost, and with just three matches in the books they are right in the competition.
Zoe Uwland and Danielle Butler were best on for Power House, whilst Lisa McCombs was important with two goals. Abbey Duggan had three goals for the Lions, whilst Gemma Macgregor was best on.
Therry Penola will host Whitefriars on Saturday morning, whilst Power House face a tough match up in Oakleigh at Scammell Reserve on Saturday afternoon.
Oakleigh recorded an impressive win over the Hampton Rovers on Saturday morning, running out 11-point victors. It was a tough contest, however, Oakleigh set themselves up from the get-go, kicking 2.1 in the first quarter. The Krushers won the second, before the Rovers fought back in the third to claw the deficit back to just 5 points.
It was a thrilling end to the match, with two goals to Oakleigh and one to the Rovers in the final term. The victory sees Oakleigh move into third on the ladder, while the Rovers remain in striking distance holding down fifth position with a decent percentage.
Milly Smith, Hollie Brodribb and Mandy Naylor all earnt consecutive best on ground nominations, whilst Oakleigh captain Ruby Ford continued her impressive start to the season.
In Round 4, the Rovers will play Richmond Central at Kevin Bartlett Reserve on Saturday morning, whilst Oakleigh will host Power House.
Monash Blues recorded their third win in a row to remain in second on the ladder, defeating Richmond Central by 22 points. Both sides had their hands on the Sherrin in the first half and were able to show for it by converting on the scoreboard. With their nose just in front, Monash held a 10-point buffer at the main break.
Whilst they saw a lot of the ball in their forward 50 for the second half, the Blues managed just 1.6. However, through a strong defensive performance, the Blues held Richmond scoreless after half-time, with their 2 straight goals their final points for the day.
Samanatha Rodgers was best on ground kicking two goals, whilst Blues captain Sarah-Jade Rose and Tiarna Jericho were also impressive. Julie Dortmans, Tenille Moselen and Georgie Hobill were the best for Richmond.
The undefeated Blues will host the winless Hawks on Saturday afternoon, whilst Richmond will host the Rovers on Saturday morning.

The final match of the round was the opportunity for one side to claim their first 4-points of the season and start their climb up the Division 1 Women’s ladder. Hawthorn hosted Old Haileybury at Rathmines Road Reserve in the evening timeslot. The yellow Sherrin was a hot commodity at both ends of the ground in a competitive looking outfit, with Old Haileybury claiming victory by 36 points.
On paper, this appeared an even match up coming in with both teams looking to get on the board and make their mark in the competition. In the end it was Haileybury who wanted it more and were able to deliver on the scoreboard. To their credit, we did see a much-improved Hawks side through persistent defensive efforts under the leadership of skipper Tessa Bodin.
Haileybury held the Hawks to just one point in the first half, piling on 3.7 to take a 24-point lead into half time. They threatened to put the game away in the third quarter, however, kicking 1.6 kept the Hawks with a slight chance. Ultimately, Haileybury held strong with two goals in the last quarter.
Poppy Murdoch had two goals for Haileybury, whilst Leesa Guastella, Jasmine Carty and Zahra Clavarino rounded out the top three. Vice-Captain Charlotte Miller led from the front for the Hawks in defeat.
Hawthorn faces a tough challenge in Round 4, playing the undefeated Monash Blues at Frearson Oval, while Old Haileybury will host Glen Eira/Old McKinnon.

Mourant’s seven goal haul powers St John’s to victory
After playing away for the first two rounds of the season, Whitefriars held off a fast-finishing Canterbury to claim a six-point victory at home and remain as one of three undefeated teams.
The Cobras kicked the first three goals of the game to grab an early lead, before the Friars bagged five of the next six to led by 12 points at quarter time. The home side had five different players kick a goal in the second to extend the lead to 31 at the half, before a more even third quarter saw the Friars extend their lead to a game-high 38 points at the final break.
Canterbury kicked 5.4 to 0.2 in the last quarter and could have stolen the game late with some more accurate goalkicking, but Whitefriars’ lead was too great to overcome.
“I was really proud of our efforts to come back,” Canterbury coach Steve Brown said.
“I think we were six goals down at the start of the third quarter, and I though our second half was really good –because we’ve been falling away a bit in other games. We had good numbers at training over the Easter break and I think that paid off in the last quarter.”
MHSOB handed West Brunswick their first defeat of the season, with the Unicorns running out 12-point winners at home over the Magpies.
After a relatively even first quarter, West Brunswick kicked five goals to two in the second to turn an eight-point deficit into an eight-point lead at the main break. The home side wrestled back momentum in the third, kicking seven goals to two to lead by 23 points at three quarter time.
The two teams traded goals in the final quarter, but the Unicorns did enough to hold on for their second win of the season.
MHSOB coach Bernie Pretty was glad to see his team get a win to celebrate 100 games for Mitch Pearson and 50 games for Charles Pearson.
“There were a couple of little points in the game where we had a bit of a lull and just got outplayed… and there were a few skill errors throughout that were costly. MHSOB’s pressure was really good and forced us to make mistakes,” said Magpies coach Regan Tait.
St Mary’s Salesian hit the road for the first time this year when they travelled to Ian Johnson Oval to face off against South Melbourne Districts. However, playing away didn’t seem to phase the Saints, overcoming a slow start to register a four-goal victory.
The visitors dominated the second quarter, registering 11 scoring shots to one, with a return of 4.7 meaning they could have led by far more than 24 points at half time.
The Bloods kicked four of the last five in the third quarter to get within one straight kick heading into the last. But five unanswered goals to the Saints to start the fourth meant they maintained their unbeaten start to the season while South Melbourne remain winless.
“St Mary’s are well coached, and the smaller ground played to their advantage. But it’s another week where we have improved again and will look to follow suit this week against Whitefriars,” South Melbourne coach Nick Abbott said.
Saints coach Clay Tait was pleased with how his team responded when challenged by South Melbourne, saying the result was reward for trying to close the gap between their best and worst performances.
The seesawing nature of the game was partly due to the windy conditions at Albert Park.
“The wind was probably more influential than what I was anticipating because it wasn’t super strong, but it was going directly down the ground. The way the two teams tried to move the ball when going against the wind just didn’t work,” Tait said.
St John’s claimed their first win for 2025 courtesy of a 62-point victory over Aquinas, who remain at the bottom of the ladder after three rounds with a percentage of just 35.8%.
The first half of the match was hotly contested, with Sam Cosham kicking two first quarter goals to help the home side hold a two-point lead at the first break. Cosham put the home side in front again late in the second quarter after kicking his third, before the Bloods conceded the next two to trail by six points at the half. Aquinas levelled the scores shortly after play resumed in the third, but the Saints lifted from that point on to kick 16 goals to five and run away with the match.
Aquinas coach Craig Glennie felt St John’s strong midfield took full advantage of the small ground at JW Manson Reserve, with Joshua Mourant kicking seven goals for the JOC’s.
“They were very good out of the middle, and with a small ground you’re having a shot from anything that comes through the square,” he said.
“I think the difference was probably the forward line – we just lacked that person who could make the most of the opportunities, whereas they had a few more scoring options.”
JOC’s coach Tim Edwards was impressed with Nicholas Beer’s performance.
“One of the boys counted his stats and I think he ended up having 52 disposals, and probably 40 of those would have been handballs from getting in and getting the ball out. He’s just an accumulator,” said Edwards.
Hawthorn jumped out of the blocks against Old Yarra Cobras at Rathmines Road Reserve, kicking five first quarter goals to hold an eight-point lead at the first break. But the Hawks were overwhelmed in the second as the Cobras kicked 11 goals to two to set up their 52-point victory.
The dominant second quarter saw Old Yarra kick six goals in the first 10 minutes, before Eamonn Avery temporarily stemmed the flow to cut the Cobras’ lead to 21. The visitors continued to press, putting on another four goals in the next six minutes to take a 45-point lead into half time.
Old Yarra coach Nathan Monaco was pleased with how his team adjusted after quarter time, with eight of the 11 goals in the second quarter coming from clearances.
Round 4 sees Whitefriars host South Melbourne Districts and Old Yarra Cobras face off against St John’s as the Friars and the Cobras look to keep their unbeaten starts to the season alive. St Mary’s Salesian, the other undefeated team after three rounds, are back at home against MHSOB, while West Brunswick will look to bounce back against Aquinas. Canterbury is hoping the unfurling of last season’s Premiership flag ahead of their first home game against Hawthorn will help energise the team as they look to claim their first win of the season.

Wet conditions no problem for fast starting Duo
The Anzac Day weekend matches served up some challenging conditions for teams, with the weather proving difficult for free-flowing football. It didn’t seem to bother fast starting La Trobe and De La Salle, who made it three on the bounce.
La Trobe University took nothing for granted after their 2-0 start. Head Coach Samantha Greene admitted hosting MCC FC was a challenge they were really excited for. Unfortunately, for MCC they only had sixteen available players on the day, meaning they had to endure a full game without any rotations.
The positive start from MCC saw the club take it up to league leaders La Trobe in the early stages. At threequarter time they trailed by eight points and were very much in the contest. However, the class of La Trobe prevailed in the final term, as they kept their opponents scoreless and recorded a hard-fought 24-point win.
Second gamer Claire Wilson starred for La Trobe, kicking three of her side’s four goals. Head coach Greene also added that the contest between the two sides will be even more exciting next time out, seeing MCC should see players return and be able to utilise rotations.
It was a similar story for De La Salle, who took on a winless Wattle Park side who were desperate for a maiden win. The Animals certainly brought their A-game early to Waverley Oval, jumping their rivals and leading right up until three-quarter time.
An inspired final quarter performance from De La Salle saw them boot three goals in six minutes to run over the top of a very brave Wattle Park outfit. Animals head coach Mel Dell’Ollio will be left puzzled after his side slumped to a third consecutive loss to kickstart 2025.
Although they are left with a mountain to climb, leading undefeated De La for three quarters will unearth a wide range of positives that the club can build on as they navigate through a challenging start to their season.
Old Carey continued to flex their muscles, downing a struggling Aquinas by 23 points. They led Aquinas at every break and were in control from the outset. An impressive afternoon from Old Carey’s Lucy Wynne and Lia Kelvie set the bar high and made it that little bit harder for Aquinas to assert any form of dominance.
Head coach Ryan Dobson will be delighted with his side’s cohesion, as his players continue to gel and rack up the wins. Life in Division 2 for Aquinas has certainly not been all sunshine and rainbows, with the Ringwoodbased club searching for their first four points of 2025. The ability to play a connected brand of football will be something Aquinas really begins to drill down on in training. They host De La Salle in round 4, a clash that becomes even more important for Aquinas.
Box Hill North managed to outlast Brunswick in a relatively cagey affair at Gillon Oval. A dominant second term saw Steve Jackson’s side kick all three goals of the game in one quarter of footy.
The two teams headed into the contest with similar form lines, both sitting 1-1 after their opening two games. Jackson relishes that competitive spirit his side plays with and was happy to see that reinstated after it was challenged greatly against De La Salle in their Round 2 meeting.
The challenging conditions the weather threw up ultimately weighed on Brunswick the greatest, seeing they did not manage a major score all game. Brunswick will be looking to reattach their goal-kicking boots next round, as they face an Old Carey outfit that loves to play attacking football.

The win of the round certainly belonged to Parkside, who notched their first win of the season in emphatic style. The Devils showcased their talent behind the ball, keeping UHS-VU goalless right up until deep into the third quarter.
Kicking eight goals fifteen, it’s probably safe to say that Parkside left a few more goals out there. Nevertheless, the rate at which they were able to score was ultra impressive and boosts the confidence of those in the forward line.
Since their narrow victory in Round 1, UHS-VU has been on the end of two ugly-looking losing margins. The ability to score consistently across four quarters has seemed to have parted ways with UHS-VU over the past two matches, leaving head coach Alex Henry with a clear area in his side’s game to improve on over the coming weeks.
Round 3 was certainly a testing one weather-wise for all clubs across Division 2 Women’s, giving coaches and players insight into how they can improve in the wet. Hopefully the conditions can improve heading into Round 4, as the competition begins to heat up. Box Hill North play host to La Trobe University in what is shaping up to be a super clash. Old Carey face off against Brunswick while Aquinas will travel to play De La Salle. Rounding out the weekend, MCC host UHS-VU and Wattle Park will come up against a red-hot Parkside.

Dominant displays and oh-so-close upsets define the return of Div 3 Men’s
After a nice and relaxing Easter break, the Division 3 Men’s competition was raring to get back into action. Across the Anzac weekend, we had teams nearly pull off big upsets and sides putting on dominant displays despite the wet weather conditions.
Power House remains the team to beat in Division 3 with a resounding 150-point win against Chadstone on the weekend, 30.18 (198) to 7.6 (48).
The ladder leaders were once again able to put on a display despite Chadstone placing them under some pressure in the first half. But after a rev-up from coach Nick Cox, Power House played far better in the second half scoring 124 of their 198 points in this half.
Jack Taylor-Evans would once again kick a haul of goals that would outscore his opponents, this time kicking nine goals. Having kicked 26 goals across three games, he has well and truly ensconced himself in the ton-watch conversation.
Despite an incident that saw one of their players taken to a hospital in the first quarter, Chadstone played a commendable game as they continue their upward trajectory despite an 0-3 record.
Richmond Central has delivered a comfortable 74-point win against La Trobe University. It was a close first quarter between the sides, but the Snakes managed to pull away in the second quarter keeping the Trobers’ scoreless which saw the game break in their favour.
Richmond Central’s coach Michael Motta put this down to their ability to lock the ball in their half which created repeated chances.
The additions of Jack Bilson and Campbell Mellor into the side would help make a difference with Bilson kicking three goals and Mellor was named best on ground for Richmond Central through his ability to get and use the ball effectively.
For La Trobe, they were somewhat hampered due to a limited bench plus players cramping across the field. But coach Andy Castles was pleased with the performances of Luke Vaughan and Connor McCredden in defence with both being named in the best on ground votes for La Trobe.
Swinburne University are now back-to-back 100+ point wins having defeated Eley Park by 106 points to put them into fourth place on the ladder.
The captaincy duo of Simon Heather and Nick Ferguson would once again play an important role in the victory as they combined for 13 goals. But it was once again a team performance that helped lead to an important victory considering that the Razorbacks did lose to the Sharks last season.
Eley Park coach Matt Embling was pleased with his team’s ability to pick up their work rate during the second half scoring 29 of their 43 points in that period. But he would like a more consistent performance from the Sharks across all four quarters.
North Brunswick is back on the winner’s list after a thrilling one-point victory against Box Hill North.
Despite conceding the first score, the Bulls lead the entire match after that. But the Demons remained within striking distance and had there been a couple of more minutes left in the game; it could have been a different result. The result becomes even more impressive for Box Hill North as according to their player-coach Beau Parthenides, they had six of their best ten players out of the squad for this week.
While the Bulls would have hoped to have won by a bigger margin considering they beat Box Hill North by 145 points last season, their ability to close out the game and defend the red-hot Demons should give the players further belief in their gameplan.
A missed shot on goal after the siren from Albert Park sees Wattle Park’s season remain undefeated with a two-point win over the Falcons.

Albert Park:
Inaccuracies would mean that Albert Park maintained the lead throughout the first half. But the Animals managed to keep the Falcons scoreless in the third quarter as their ball movement saw them chain up possessions despite the wet weather conditions to get on the scoreboard.
Once again, this ability to spread the ball out of the contest and create forward opportunities has been the difference for Glenn Hopkins’ side.
Despite the close game, player-coach Jack Aimes felt that Albert Park didn’t adapt to the wet weather conditions fast enough which also contributed to his side’s loss. While they have started the season 0-3, the Falcons have been competitive in every match against highly ranked opponents in Richmond Central and North Brunswick. This should hopefully translate into wins as the Falcons hope to soar up the ladder in the not-so-distant future.
While some eyes may be focused on the contest taking place in the voting booths this Saturday, there will be plenty of interest for the Round 4 clashes taking place on the field. Box Hill North will look to test Power House at Elgar Park as they press their case for finals. Albert Park will be on the hunt for their first win for 2025 when they take on Swinburne at home. Eley Park plays host to La Trobe as both teams hope to rebound after big losses in Round 3. Chadstone is up against North Brunswick in Chadstone as the Synners look to try and tame the Bulls. And in the match of the round, it’s a battle between Richmond Central and Wattle Park with only one team leaving the match with their perfect record intact.

South Melbourne soar with first win of the season
Fresh off the Easter bye round, footy returned in the Division 3 Women’s competition, and in fine fashion no less. There were triumphant wins and individual stand out performances that typified a great round of VAFA football. And whilst the wet weather provided a challenge, Ormond, Old Camberwell, Mazenod and St Mary’s continued their winning ways in the top four.
Ormond delivered one of the most comprehensive wins Division 3 has seen, annihilating the competition they faced in Prahran, 134 to a single behind. This victory extends the Monders undefeated streak after three rounds of competition and skyrockets their percentage to keep them comfortably atop the ladder.
Indiana Harrison, Charlotte Fisher and Hannah Foran set the bar high, kicking five, four and four goals respectively in brilliant individual performances. However, it would be remiss not to highlight the collective effort of a cohesive size that is the current Ormond outfit, who are yet to put a foot wrong.
Ormond bolted out of the gates to put 5.4 on the board by the quarter time siren. Maintaining the momentum throughout the match, their biggest haul of points came through in the premiership quarter with a 7.3 barrage to silence Prahran.
On tough outing Prahran’s standouts included Millie Stonnill, Philippa Stevenson, and Jessy Brown. Michaela Di Lecce and Arcadia Diaz were notable mentions in the best afield for Ormond.
Old Camberwell outclassed Elsternwick keeping them scoreless for three quarters to charge home to a 17-point victory. Rebecca Bellpieri scored all three goals for her side, playing a fantastic role up forward.
Despite their chances Elsternwick were unable to hit the scoreboard, until a fourth quarter major from Ashira Chait sparked some belief back into the travelling side.
Gordon Barnard Reserve played well into the hands of the home side in unpredictable Melbourne conditions, to eventually come away with those all-illustrious four points in a 23-6 defeat of their opponent in Elsternwick.
Madeleine Riddle stood out for the Wickers in her best game of the season thus far, while Old Camberwell’s Gabriella Bianco continued her stellar form earning herself a third consecutive spot in the best.
Mazenod defeated Albert Park by 11 points in a low scoring affair at Central Reserve. In a tight first quarter, Albert Park got the jump on the scoreboard to hold a 5-point advantage at the first break.
This buffer was short lived as Mazenod kept Albert Park goalless from the second quarter onwards, kicking two goals of their own in the second. At the final siren, Mazenod held the lead 19-8 and take home the chocolates to keep their undefeated record in tact.
Lara Del Conte continued her strong form, kicking two goals, whilst Annabelle Davies-Todd got onto the score sheet with one goal.
St Mary’s Salesian is another side that continued their flawless campaign to kickstart 2025, defeating North Brunswick by 32 points at Ferndale Park.
The Saints got off to a flying start in the first half, kicking five goals to one. This ultimately held them in good stood to retain control of the game. North Brunswick made their surge in the third quarter, kicking three goals, before St Mary’s kicked three goals in the last quarter to secure the victory.
Despite a comeback from North Brunswick in the second half, the deficit proved too great to overcome, with the final scoreboard reflecting 66-34 in favour of the home side.
Lucy Dobbyn was sensational, kicking five goals. Georgia Crowley got onto the scoreboard kicking three goals. Emma Hall and Jaime Sawer both kicking one goal each.

Lauren Balcombe and Holly Booth both kicked two goals each, whilst Katie Ruthven kicked one for North Brunswick.
South Melbourne Districts secured their first win of the season, defeating Canterbury by 54 points. South Melbourne had a strong first half, booting five majors, with Canterbury managing just 1.1 for the half.
Allanah Ryan was on song, with a bag of 3 goals, while Carni Dowsett and Claire Ryan kicked two goals each. Jacqueline Simpkin and Willow Sweeney Johnston both kicked one goal each.
This was a fantastic team performance of a side not willing to give up when the chips were down and South Melbourne has clawed themselves all the way up to the middle of the table.
All eyes turn to Round 4 where some exciting match ups await in hopefully dryer conditions. The undefeated sides in Ormond and Mazenod go head-to-head where only one can retain their clean streak. Canterbury will host Old Camberwell, while Albert Park is set to come up against St Mary’s Salesian in a middle order contest. Rounding out the weekend, Elsternwick host South Melbourne Districts and Prahran will come up against North Brunswick.

Fitzroy roar past the Bullants in thrilling ANZAC round clash
The ANZAC marquee round in Division 4 kicked off with a highly skilled arm-wrestle between Preston Bullants and Fitzroy. As both teams sought to make amends for their Round 2 losses, an accurate Fitzroy put the sword to Preston leading 12-7 at the first interval.
Returning to the field for the first time since an ACL, Preston captain Lily Saunders swung momentum back the Bullants way booting her second major for the morning. Saunders’ efforts accompanied by goals from Becker-Scott, Mellington and Thompson ensured the Bullants held an 8-point lead at the half.
Fitzroy’s Jessica Calvert was the fire-starter in the third term, kicking two consecutive goals to initiate another lead change in favour of the Lions.
Preston Bullants’ coach Trevor Robinson commended the second-half performance of his side to keep the pressure on Fitzroy despite having one on the bench for the majority of the final term. Robinson made sure to highlight Shannon Gore who notched up her 100 th career goal for the Bullants, a true testament to her efforts week-in-week out at Preston.
Despite Fitzroy winning the final term by a point, the damage had largely been done as Fitzroy triumphed by 11 points at W.R. Ruthven Reserve (45-56).
With this result, both sides square on 4 points remain in touching distance of the top 4. As we cast our eye toward next week, winners Fitzroy take on 2nd place Port Melbourne Chargers as Preston Bullants will look to return to the winners list against St Kevin’s.
Unfortunately for the fourth week in a row, Old Xaverians were forced to forfeit against Westbourne Grammarians handing the 4 points to Westbourne. Westbourne, sitting third, boast an impressive percentage of 640, which will be vital to maintain in this long and competitive season.
As for next week, Westbourne will host Port Melbourne Chargers in a mouth-watering clash between 2nd and 3rd place. The fans are sure to expect a high scoring and
skilled contest. Old Xavs have a great opportunity next week against the West Brunswick Magpies at Stradbroke Park.
Despite misfiring in the first term by delivering 5 behinds without a goal, West Brunswick capitalised on their possession dominance in the next three quarters to win by 22 points over St Kevin’s
The first major of the day was booted by West Brunswick’s Emma Mannix, with Bethany Koff quickly following suit with a major of her own to create a 16-point buffer on St Kevin’s at the main change. A score-less third quarter was a testament to the backlines of both sides, offering hope for St Kevin’s to translate a strong defence into some forward movement. The final term was underpinned by a goal to Han DeBuhr to extend the lead to 22 points at the final siren.
Despite the loss, Lewis, Rolleston, Cook, Holden and Winayakan were among St Kevin’s best withstanding the constant pressure applied by the Magpies all day. St Kevin’s with a win under their belt in round 1 will want to taste that winning feeling again against the high-flying Preston next week, as the Magpies will face Old Xavs at Stradbroke Park.
The afternoon timeslot was marked by the Monash Blues contest with 2nd place Port Melbourne Chargers. With expectations high on Port Melbourne to come out of the rooms swinging, the first quarter was relatively subdued with a singular point scored by Monash to show for at the quarter time break.
This unexpected start kicked Port Melbourne into gear, dominating the scoreboard with a 2.5 goal quarter to a scoreless Monash second term. This scoreboard dominance was also reflected in the third term, with another 2 goals added to the Port Melbourne goal tally. Crucial to the Chargers’ scoreboard ticking over was Maloney, Tarascio, Zhou, Ryan and Pritchard. Inaccuracy cost the Chargers a big win and a much-needed percentage boost for much of the afternoon. Monash ended their day with a major courtesy of Elyse Gordon, cutting the margin back to four goals when the siren blew.

Beaumaris 2:
GOALS: Oakleigh 2:
This wave of momentum will hold the Chargers in good stead as they prepare to take on Fitzroy next Saturday. For Monash, they will face table-topping Beaumaris next week looking to claim their elusive victory.
To close out Round 3’s fixtures, Beaumaris were flawless in a 123-point shellacking of Oakleigh, solidifying their position atop of the Division 4 ladder. A five goal to zero opening term set the tone for a big day for Beaumaris. Maya Buhl (4 goals), Georgia Tysoe (3 goals), Lara Barker (2 goals) and Pippi Barrow (2) were the headline acts in the Beaumaris forward line, continuing to pile on the pain for Oakleigh’s backs.
While the forward’s filled their boots, Beaumaris’ defenders stayed resolute denying any Oakleigh scoring opportunities. Despite the constant pressure on the Oakleigh back 6, Oakleigh secretary Craig Robinson praised their efforts, citing they “defended hard all day against a more experienced side.”
Undoubtedly, Oakleigh will regroup and take plenty of learnings from Saturday’s result. The winning formula is no question thriving at Beaumaris in season 2025.
Some interesting matchups await us in Round 4 as Port Melbourne and Fitzroy will do battle at JL Murphy Reserve in the match of the round.

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Harry Hill (Old Carey)
This weekend marks a remarkable milestone as Harry Hill runs out as Captain for his 150th game for Old Carey Football Club, The Panthers. From his self-proclaimed Leo Barry moment in the 2015 U/19 Grand Final against Old Geelong—sealing the win with a game-saving mark—to his unwavering commitment during a low point for the club through a difficult transition in 2019. When others wavered, he stepped up, ensuring the club’s survival and setting the tone for a brighter future. A natural leader and an integral player at the club, Harry is more than just a footballer—he’s a mate, a mentor, and the ultimate teammate. Always going above and beyond for those around him, it’s no surprise he’s universally respected and loved. His 150th is made even sweeter by the 2024 Premier C Senior Men’s Premiership—a triumph 10 years in the making. Harry has been and continues to be the heart and soul of the Panthers.
