Well it must be VAFA Grand Final weekend again! The traditional Elsternwick Park "lake' has dominated the ground following the extraordinary rains that fell midweek . Hopefully as you read this Editorial the ground staff will have managed to get the ground in the best possible condition for play. Our ground staff of Max and Trevor, along with the Brighton City Council staff, have been superb all year long and it won't have been for lack of effort if the ground is not in tip-top shape this weekend .

It has again been a very good year for the VAFA with a number of wonderful highlights, such as the success of the Big V team, some very good football through all the grades and most importantly a sense of worth amongst all our teams at belonging to an Association as good as we have .

I certainly would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank myfantastic staff . New "chum" Brian Woodhead has been a wonderful recruit for the VAFA and his efforts in his particular areas of responsibility have been outstanding . Brian's ever-willingness to assist in other areas when nee ded has been much appreciated by myself .

Sue Anderson and Brett Connell have made up the rest of the Administration team and their efforts and contributions have certainly guaranteed that we have been able to move along in an efficient manner.

It would be most remiss of me if I didn't thank my wife Robyn and daughters Sarah and Joanne for battling on through the year with "Dad" being "at the Park" . . . again/still! Also to Brian's wife Kath and their two boys for their support of Brian and myself and the VAFA .

To the "boss" David Burnes, it has continued to be a pleasure to work closely with him on a daily basis and I would also!iketothankthe Executive for their time and support over this busy season .

Finally to the clubs who ARE the Association, I hope that you are all back next season and we can do it all again - good luck to all teams striving for the ultimate this weekend and best wishes to all Amateur players, supporters and officials for a relaxing off-season . . . thanks for your support .

My tips for this final weekend (and my apologies TO THE TEAMS I HAVE PICKED) are : Mazenod (U19s) ; Old Melbu rnians (B section) and De La Salle (A Section) .

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

by David Burne s Welcome everybody to Elsternwick Parkfor the final weekend of Amateur football for 1993 .

What a wonderful year it has been for Amateur football, highlighted by the two magnificent wins by our Senior Representative state . To everybody connected with the side I offer my congratulations, and let's hope that at the next Carnival to be held in Melbourne in 1994 we can win back the title of premier side in the A .A .F. Competition .

Congratulations to all the Senior premier sides, Oakleigh, St Mary's, Old Camberwell, St Bedes/ Mentone and Mazenod and good luck to the sides competing this weekend.

In a replay of the 2nd semi final Therry and Old Melburnians meet in the B Grade Grand Final . Congratulationsto both sides on their promotion to A section and we look forward to a great game between these two sides.

To the sides in the main game on Sunday I wish both of them best of luck on the day . De La have led the competition for most of the second half of the season

and always looked likely to be in the Grand Final .

Collegials suffered a minor slump toward the end of the season and looked to be struggling .

However they have come out firing in the finals and have won both their finals game s in a comprehensive manner that now sees them aiming for back to back premierships .

Forced to make a prediction I would lean toward Old Melburnians and Collegians .

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking each member of the Executive for his contribution this year and to the staff at Elsternwick Park for their efforts .

To the clubs who make up our Association I look forward to you all rejoining us again .

REVIEW Collegians forced their way through the preliminar y final with an inspired victory over the Old Xaverians last Sunday.

The Lions opened up brilliantly booting 5 .8 to nothing in the first term . During the quarter both teams attacked the ball, and each other, with extreme ferocity, but it was the reigning premiers who refused to falter under pressure, whereas the Xavs continually turned the ball over .

It was always going to be a hard task for the Xaverian team : 1 . Collegians were back in form and had the benefit of the week's break .

2 . The Xaverians would have been a little leg weary from the game against De La .

3. The windy conditions did not suit the Xavs' game .

4. Matt Bourke, Doug Bailey and Dan Richardson were all missing from the line up.

Collegians went into the game without Brett Jefferson, but given the windy conditions his absence was not a major factor for the Lion's game plan . Matt Hannebery pleaded with his team to have a go at quarter time, but the Lions held form and, despite having the breeze, the Xaverians only outscored them by 1 goal . At half time this game seemed all over !

Jim Bennett was on top at chb as was Mark Hibbins in the pivot and Gary Irvine on the wing . A slaugther seemed on the cards as the Xavs had few winners .

At half time many changes were made by Hannebery .

John McKay went to the forward line, Tim O'Sullivan to half back, Bowen into the centre just to name a few . The results were instantaneous as the Xavs snared 5 goals straight against the wind while holding Collegians to 2 .3.

Every Xaverian player had accepted the challenge and at last Collegians had a game on their hands.

The Xavs, with the aid of the wind in the final term, kicked an early goal to get to within two goals of the lead, but the Lions regrouped and bottled up the play wherever possible. Two booming goals byTim O'Sullivan kept the Xavs in the race- but collegians replied through Pollock and Kerr to register a well deserved win .

The Lions should have won this game easily but inaccurate kicking, coupled with excellent Xaverian kicking saw the margin very close. There is little doubt that the Xavs will learn from the experience and should come back harder, faster and stronger next year.

As I have said all along - experience wins finals in A-section . Well done Collegians.

GRAND FINAL PREVIE W The A-section Grand Final this year is a repeat of last year's final, however this time De La Salle will start as firm favourites, rather than Collegians .

There seems little doubt that the "rest" will give De La an advantage in both speed and endurance, while the Lions may be licking their wounds from last week's physical encounter with the Xaverians . These two teams have dominated proceedings in A-section for the past four years . De La are playing in their 3rd consecutive

Grand Final, while Collegians are playing in their 3rd final in the past four years.

Both teams obviously have finals experience so I don't expect nerves to play a major role today (as it did last week with the Xavs) . N either team has had any forwards kicking a swag of goals, they have relied on running players to chip in with a couple here and a few there .

For this reason the defence must be provided in the midfield, so that the runners are not given a free path into the scoring area .

James Bennett, Steve Laussen and Aaron Harrison across half back provide an excellent long kicking springboard into attack, and they will need to be slowed down . At the other end of the field Danny Smith, Sam Hunter and Andrew Mackintosh have developed a similar style of defence, running the ball out and getting up forward thrust .

The ruck duels will be tight with Brett Jefferson likely to return to the Collegians line up, and he along with Chris Pollock will have the task of keeping Andrew Ronchi at bay.

At ground level Michael Lake will have to keep an eye out for the prolific Brett Mahony . Mahony is quick, skilled and purposeful . Col McClounan and Matt Galbraith should have a great tassle as opposing ruck rovers they are both creative and elusive. Mark Hibbins controls the Collegian midfield and De La have numerous centremen to choose from . Julian Moloney, Andrew Mackintosh, Craig Wright and Chris Slattery can all play there - who will is anybody's guess. As usual De La will have to blanket Rick Schober as he is a big game performer.

There isn't much separating these two teams on form and, for that matter, on paper they cannot be split . I believe De La will win today, and here's why : 1 . The advantage of the week's rest has statistically been hard to overcome .

2 . De La owe Collegians one from last year's final .

3. De La is performing better in the midfield .

4. De La has a more versatile team .

5. There are some injury clouds over Collegian players.

This game could quite easily go either way as confidence-the unknown factor - can play a major role.

To offset the confidence factor a team needs experience .

Both teams have plenty of experience and this should help their self belief.

The weather has, in the past, affected the results . It won't today as these two teams handle all conditions well . Collegians don't mess around with the ball, they kick long and direct . De La run the ball and sometimes overuse it . However, De La can change game plans simply because of the versatility of personnel .

All in all, a great game is assured . May the best team win . And for me, I'll go with De La today - by 8 points.

200 FOR CHRIS POLLOCK All Collegians congratulate the likeable Chris Pollock on playing his 200th game forthe club in the A Grade First Semi-Final on the 5th September 1993 . A Finals veteran (one could almost say specialist) Polly turned the game in the second half against NOBs when moved to full-forward and was at it again with a Best On Ground effort last Sunday against Old Xaverians .

Chris joined the Lions in 1993 having learned his football with Yarra Valley, Blackburn in the EDFL and Fitzroy U/19s . With fellow recruits Geoff English and Roo

Wright, Chris was a member of the reformed Collegians U/19s team (the Lions U/19s having fallen into recess during World War II!), regularly playing both Reserves and U/19s games on the one day . The outcome of many an U/19s match was changed forthat year with the midgame arrival of the already muddied and highly talented trio, all of whom later played with distinction with the Seniors .

Chris first played in the Seniors in 1985, taking over the First-Ruck position from the legendary but ageing Glen Cook. He has been a fixture in the Firsts ever since with his durability, clever ruckwork, finejudgement and sure hands. Unlucky not to have won a Best and Fairest ortwo, Polly is invariably a great contributor and never more so than in the Finals . Quite apart from this years finals form Chris won the'Best Finals Player Award' in 1989 and was amongst the best few players throughout the Lions successful 1986 and 1992 A Grade Premiership campaigns .

Polly- let's have another big effort in the Grand Final to repeat last years effort against De La .

Congratulations Polly on your achievements . You are a credit to Collegians, to your family and to Amateur Football generally . May you play on for many many years to come .

DE LA SALLE MILESTONE S GAVAN HINES . is the eldest son of Pat and Wendy who have both been wonderful workers for both Junior and Senior teams at De La overthe last six years, when he brought up his Century, playing 1 of his best games of the year. Coming up through the U/Age and U/19 teams he is currently on the fringe of permanent selection in the Seniors, as per his appearance in the Second Semi with the Senior Team . Congratulations.

PETER WYLES a companion of Gavan's, who has been one of the speed merchants of the Ressies for a few years and has been compared as being fasterthan Jason Richardson (Stawell Gift 1993) on the footy field, also completed his ton recently . Well done Wylesie, all at De La respect you and your loyalty, good luck in the Finals , PAUL FUIME completed his 100 games earlier in the season but that auspicious occasion was missed by our statician, accordingly belated, but sincere, congratulations on that milestone . Fuime has taken nearly two years to get himself into the Seniors but his recent gutsy efforst in that team appears to have got him almost firmly entrenched on a permanent basis .

Keep those dancing feet dancing .

MATT O'CALLAGHAN (MOCCA) . Doubtless the glamour advertising boy at De La, with his handsome looks and physique, Mocca reached the prized 100 total a few weeks ago . Mocca has had a wonderful career with De La playing in 4 successive premiership teams -'88 (U/17)'89 (U/19), '90 (Reserves)'91 (Seniors) . Well done Mocca and we wish you continued glory with De La and hopethatyou maycontinueon with your grand record and add another jewel to your crown this year .

The Diadora `Player of the Year' and Diadora `Coach of the Year' will be presented to the crowd on Sunday Sept 19 before the main game . Steve Brazil (NOBs) and Tony Paatsch (Mazenod) are the respective recipients of the awards . See inside this edition for more details.

A quick look at the tips from last week in the finals played . In A Section Collegians proved that finals experience is hard to overcome with a withering first quarter against Old Xavs who then had to chase all day .

Therry outclassed Uni Blues in B Section to advance to the Grand Final today against Old Melburnians and the right to enter A Section after being relegated in 1992 .

In C Section Mazenod kicked the sweep against Ajax to prove that it was by far the most outstanding team in C Section in 1993 . In D Section a magnificent game saw the newly combined St Bedes/ M entone Tigers outlast a dogged Old Geelong to win by 2 points in a nailbiter. Both sides gave their all and for one team to lose and another win was in someways an injustice. But on the day St Bedes/Mentone Tigers were the better side, after the lead fluctuated continuously throughout the game . In U19/C NOBs were never really in the hunt against Old Paradians and in U19/S Collegians made Ajax's day begin on the wrong foot when they took out the pennant . 5 out of 8 - not bad eh !

Now that all finals, bar A & B Grand Finals, are to be completed let's take a look at the relegation/promotion placings .

by David Holland REVIEW - PRELIMINARY FINAL The 1993 Season came to a disappointing end for Uni Blues when they were beaten by a bigger, stronger and more superior combination in Therry by a final margin which certainly doesn't relate the dominance Therry had for the most part of the clash .

The Blues went in with an unchanged line-up from the 1st Semi, after Tim Harris had battled hard for 2 weeks to overcome a calf injury and was passed fit just hours prior to the game. Therry likewise, were unchanged, and gambled on the suspect Simon Eastmure (a good bet in hindsight!)

The Blues opened up in great sytle when FF Greg Lochhead attempted a spoil and ended up taking the grab to draw first blood . Therry settled after a shaky start with Dave Wrigglesworth levelling the scores and then assisting Bernie Carter for another. Blues Bob Steele goaled before the 1st break to see his side 7 pis down .

Grant Williams praised his backline and asked for more numbers at the contest . . . In one ear and out the other, went that request as Therry took a stranglehold on the game in the 2nd qtr. From the 3 min mark on, it was all Therry. "Chief" Petrevski had too much extra inches for Jack Frith and Bob Steele and fed Matton, Taylor, Carter etc. with ease out of the pivot. Up forward Goodwin and Baker ran riot with Baker booting 2 quick goals before Paul Matton put through another after an almighty "Chief" thump from the centre (well worth a kick, stats man!) . Uni Blues were praying for 1/2 time and it finally came, but not before Goodwin and Eastmure, playing in a FP, added 1 apiece and Therry held a commanding 38 pt lead, with 13 more scoring shots !

Grant Williams kept his side on the ground for some time and gave them an absolute pasting - deservedly so! This must have hit a spot with the Blues as they pulled their heads out of the sand and slammed on 5 gls in the 1st 1/2 of the 3rd, with Chris Taylor and Lochhead being the key upforward . Taylor was inspirational in the air and at ground level whilst Lochhead booted 2 gls, one a "steal" from Dalgliesh's hands in the square and the other the result of Mark of the Day. Therry shook their heads, slapped themselves and steadied with 2 glsfrom Easty and at 3/4 time, Blues were down by just 11 pts.

Therry coach Terry Quinn pleaded with his charges not to let the game slip away after having come so far and was critical of the players' mouthing off during the 3rd term . The boys responded, and returned to their aggressive running style of play which proved too much forthe tired Blues. But really, if Therry had been on target earlier on, the "Fat Lady" would have exercised her lungs well before now. Therry won by 38 pts, convincing in itself, until you note that they also had a massive 19 more scoring shots than Blues .

To the Blues credit, they never gave up, and played -out the game in good spirit .

The work of Chris Taylor and Greg Lochhead was a telling factor in the 3rd 1/4 revival and Tim Harris was also an inspiration to his team mates . Nathan Cavalier, on a wing, and Toby McIntyre in defence put in great games for their side .

I thought Tim Taylor, Dennis Castaldi and Mick Goodwin were brilliant forTherry as they outclassed their opponents for most of the game, but doesn't it make a difference when your Ruckman wins 95% of the knockouts . Simon Eastmure kept Therry alive in the 3rd qtr and proved too tall for the Blues defence, whilst Lou Caruana did a top job on Tom Hutchins. Congratulations and commiserations to Uni on getting there but missing out . A terrific 1st year for Grant who can look forward to even better things in '94 with his young team .

PREVIEW - GRAND FINA L So we come to the big one - the ultimate in a footballer's dreams - the Grand Final . 42 players would have found it very difficult to sleep last night and 21 of them will not see their beds for a few days after today . Both sides are in A Grade next year, fine, but you play to win premierships!

Once again, the centre will play a big part in today's outcome . "Chief" Petrevski is the danger, if fit, as OMs can't match him for height or strength, so a bit of strategy is required to negate his potential influence . There s class, pace and strength personified amongst the respective on-ballers - Matton v Berry, Thompson v Dalgliesh and Taylor v Webb will all be important match-ups in the pivot .

Therry Quinn's move of McKay to FF of late has proved fruitful and he should stick to it today, although he'll have to earn every kick against Tony Witts who demolished Zanetti in the 2nd Semi . Therry need more out of Wriggs at CH F and Zanetti who'll push out to a flank or pocket .

OMs defence with Boyden, Nelson, Stuckey (if avail), and Useinov are a tough combination and if skipper Jeremy Nicholls plays he should line up on the dangerous Mick Goodwin . Eastmure up forward is also another option and avenue for Therry.

At the other end, and so much relies on Scott Tea .

If he is allowed space, he will beat all comers - just where he kicks the ball is another question (between the big sticks, I suggest, Tealy!) Andy Witts and Simon Fraser combine experience with youth and are other options with "Alvin" Theodore and Billy Fafoutellis also good around the packs . Simon Boyle is likely to pick up Teal or Easty might have to be brought back to defence.

Therry are a hard aggressive side and have a good running-style of play as their game plan . This aggression may topple OMs who probably rely too much on their higher skill level . Conversion rate and weather and ground conditions will feature in the outcome where I believe Therry will hold the cards and win by about 3 gls .

All things aside, this will be a great game between the proven 2 best sides in the comp . Good luckto both Clubs .

To the winners go the plaudits, to the vanquished the spoils and the total disappointment and utter despair and this was the case on Saturday with only 2 pts separating the combatants at the sounding of the final siren .

To all associated with St BedeslMentone Tigers congratulations on your fine performance, to win a premiership is no mean feat and is something I'm sure none of you will ever forget, they don't come too often in one's career and must be savoured when they do .

To all the officials from hard working President John Meyer, to the old workhorse Frank Kean, to the Guru Phil Sierowski, L'Huiller Family and everyone else WELL DONE .

To Mark Tyquin and the players go all the spoils of success your performances over the year make you worthy PREMIERS and your efforts over the final series were nothing short of sensational .

Old Geelong who were devestated can feel justly proud of themselves, they showed enormous courage and resilience of charactertofight backfrom the depths of despair 2 weeks ago to almost do the impossible and win the premiership. Full credit for this must go to Stuart Glascott and his players who all showed enormous courage in the face of adversity.

Congratulations to all at University Blacks who duly came out on top in the Reserves and so finished PREMIERS and CHAMPIONS, to Kim Kershaw and his charges WELL DONE .

REVIEW What a contrast to a fortnight ago as the OGs came out with all guns blazing to surprise the Tigers who seemed to be having trouble finding their feet . By quarter time though they had regained their composure and had just put their bow in front .

Not to be outdone the Old Geelong boys kept persevering and by the 20 minute mark of the 2nd term had opened up a 20 pt lead . They seemed to relax a little bit and allowed their opposition to score a couple of goals and so keep within striking distance atthe long interval .

The 3rd qtr was as tough as you would see in a Grand Final with neither side giving an inch . The Tigers kept clawing at the OGs lead and by the final orange break of the season had just hit the front to lead by only 2 pts .

The heavens opened up at 3/4 time giving the impression that with the slippery conditions and the breeze at their backs that the OGs were home. This was further rammed home when they kicked the 1st gl, then a couple of points to open up a handy 7 pt lead . Despite having plenty of opportunities to increase this lead the Tiger defense stood firm and kept repelling their attacks .

A Tiger foray into attack saw them regain the lead, but little Bernie Edmunds somehow threaded his way through to put Old Geelong back in front as we entered time on . All the players on both sides were by now dead on their feet but somehow the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers who with the week's rest possibly had the fresher legs managed to force the ball forward and score the winning goal with less than a minute to play.

All in all one of the better Grand Finals that the large crowd had the pleasure of seeing with the real winner being FOOTBALL. Some better players were Mad Jones in his 200th game for the Tigers clearly BOG, he never stopped all day, Tim Beasley was always dangerous up forward Big McCart hy was great in the ruck and probably scored votes from his namesake Umpire, and the rest of the Tigers had to be given credit for their effo rts .

For Old Geelong some really gutsy pe rformances here with John Manton despite his injury playing a magnificent game, Cullen Gunn despite a serious cut to his head showed tremendous courage to return to the field, Dan Ritchie was handy and Stu Glasoc tt without a doubt the player of the final series did everything he could to try and win for his side .

A truly fi tt ing finale to a wonderf ul season .

RESERVES The Blacks as expected and contrary to my tippin g an upset never gave the SKOBS a look, in and recorded an easy victory. Highlight of the game was Umpire Chris Keeton overawed by his 2nd Grand Final of the season bouncing the ball into his HEAD .

Well that's all folks once again thanks to all who have helped make this a very readable column and an enjoyable one in which to prepare and I look forward to renewing acquaintances with everyone in 1994 no matter what grade the ROVERS may be in .

ST BEDES/MENTONE TIGERS ; OLD GEELONG Amateur Football lost no admirers after last Saturday's 'D' Section Grand Final .

Played at the Brunswick Oval, before a large crowd (the canteen ran out before half-time), the game was a credit to the two competing clubs - St Bedes/Mentone Tigers and Old Geelong .

After a close hard-fought battle, St Bedes/Mentone prevailed by two points.

It is indeed unfortunate there had to be a loser, Whilst Old Geelong 'lost', Amateur Football was the winner.

As a member of the executive, I was delighted wit h the conduct of the game . Hard, intense, close football, played fairly in an excellent spirit . The game was worthy of a much higher grade.

Both clubs are to be congratulated on their success during the season . St Bedes/Mentone on winning the Premiership ; Old Geelong on being runners up and gaining promotion to 'C' grade.

Thanks also to the umpires who officiated so well ; to the North Old Boys Club on providing such an excellent finals venue ; and finally to my "offsiders", Peter Harris ; Tom Brain ; and Mavis Bastow.

All in all, a great day for Amateur Football .

Congratulations to Old Paradians and Collegians on their premierships last week and also to the B&F winners Michael Fitzsimon (O .Xav) Div. 1 ; Michael Frigo (O.C'well) and Damian Glass (St Leos) Div 2 Central ; and John Carroll (St Bedes) Div 2 South .

REVIEW OF LAST WEEKS GAMES Division 1 - Preliminary Fina l De La started well with an early goal and Bernies responded but their kicking was astray and the match was only 1 pt the difference at the first break. The 2nd qtr was the matchwinnerfor Bernies outscoring D's by 6 gls . Bernies got great drive from their "talls" Mick Hande and Ashley McIntyre whilst Pat Zeine was his usual steady self on the backline . Even though D's rallied in the last qtr thanks to input from Smith, Mannix and Conroy Bernies were able to steady and hang on until the final siren . Andrew Grant and Crowe were other good triers for the D's whilst John Kavanagh and Daniel Sawicki were a couple of consistent contributors for Bernies in an even team display. Commiserations to Noel and the De La boys on missing the Grand Final for the 1st time in years but they have been great representatives for their club.

Division 2 Central - Grand Final There's not an awful lot to say about a game where there is a winning margin of 104 pts . From the outset the Bundoora Boys were quicker and hardertothe ball than the NOBs. Parade had a focal point up forward with Stevie Farrell - who seemed to have brought his own cheer squad and who ended up with 8 majors .

Hayden Bellis dominated the air and Dion Ciavola seemed to be everywhere and was my pick for b .o.g .

The highlight of the game was definitely Andrew Nitsou's mark - better than any of Jezza's or'God' Ablett's - but how could you have missed the goal Andrew? Jim and his NOBs are to be complimented on making the Grand Final in their "return" year and I'm sure they'll be a force again next year but all credit to Parade who were the top team almost throughout the entire season . Well done Alex & Co. Division 2 South - Grand Fina l This game was also decided by a large margin of 63 pts but it was only after halfway through the 3rd qtr that Collegians broke away to record their comfortable win .

Jackals started in sensational style with Rajch notching 2 gls in the first 2 minutes but they could only manage another 7 for the rest of the game . The Lions big men, Rose and Semmens, dominated the air and they were not let down by their crumbers when the ball hit the ground . I was particularly impressed by the Lions great tacking which continually putthe Jackas under pressure.

Andrew Semmens booted 6 for the winners whilst Rajch ended up with 4 for Jackas. Other good performers for the winners were Humphry, Bell, Mulder and Palmer whilst Rosen, Chrapot and Abraham tried hard all day for the Jackas . Congrats to Phil and the boys from "my team" and apologies to Mark and the Jackas for putting the "kiss of death" on them 2 years running but 2 Grand Finals in a row is still a great effort .

PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMES Division 1 - Grand Final A few weeks ago I didn't think Nodders & Bernies would be the Grand Finalists but they have deserved this honour with really good consistent efforts at the business end of the season . They have each had a home win during the season and the key today could be how well they use the wide spaces of H .Q. Nodders were slow starters against D's 2 weeks ago and a repeat today would be fatal as Bernies are a confident team and take a lot of stopping after a good start . The keys to the game could be the respective spearheads . Morgan did well for Nodders against De La and again in the "Ones" Grand Final last week whilst Webby "started" in the 1st Semi and was again Bernies main scorer last week and I'm sure his back will be good enough to enable him to get more than "the couple" he predicted 3 weeks ago. Both teams have good tails - O'Hara for Nodders and Hande for Bernies - and the game will depend greatly on their "smalls" crumbing ability . If Bernies can get "Big Chatty" to concentrate for 4 qtrs he could almost win the game off his own boot (or Webby's) .

Kavanagh, Mcl ntyre and Zeine are a formidable backline and will make scoring tough for Nodders Morgan, Carter and Hanley. I expect Nodders to use the spaces of H .Q . better than last time - they'll need to! - and, if they can improve on the 11/2 qtrs of good football of a couple of weeks ago, they can win their first Div . 1 flag . Bernies will be looking to win their first U19 flag in 10 years and I think they can achieve that goal and reward Terry for his 3 years of very hard work . Bernies to lead and just hang on to sneak home by a kick!

Andrew Mackintosh (35) : Andrew is the deputy VC and a very skilful player in defence and across the center setting up many forward thrusts with his aggressive running and handball .

Craig Wright (8) : Craig has the pace, creativity and ball getting abilities which make him a key in setting up many DLS attacking moves .

Chris Slattery (6) : Chris has the toughness and skill needed to play in the center. He has turned in many outstanding performances this year and his efforts in the 2nd semi are testament to his abilities .

Andrew Ronchi (37) : Andrew is by far the most courageous and athletic ruckman in the competition .

He is creative in the center area and prepared to help out in defence .

Col McClounan (7) : Col has had a great first year as DLS Capt . He plays the game with great intensity and at a level that has been inspirational throughout the year .

Grant Sheedy (32) : Strong centre half back who creates plenty of drive . Not afraid to take risks and run off his opponent, setting up many forward moves .

Michael Hegan (46) : 'Scoop' has had to overcome serious injury this season, but appears to be back to his best, showing great dash out of defence. Came on against 0. Xavs in the 2nd semi and did well .

Gavin Hynes (16) : One of the quickest players at the club with a deadly left foot, Gavin has really arrived as a senior player. Was instrumental in our hard fought win over Ormond in the last round .

Peter Leonard (42) : Peter has found the comeback trail a frustrating one, but has finished the season well, with a strong, physical performance in the semi-final against 0 . Xavs .

Peter Rennie (33) : Inspirational courage and desperation arethe hallmarks of Peter's game . His return tothe fray brings into the team a wealth of finals experience and gives a welcome boost to the DLS finals campaign .

Craig Swift (36) : One of the year's "big" improvers .

Craig has had a very consistent '93 season in the demanding chf role . A tall player who is strong overhead, Craig is equally effective when the ball hits the

ground, his strong contesting creating opportunities for his fellow forwards .

Nick Fraser (5) : Skill and flair in abundance. A proven finals performer who is always dangerous near goals .

His ability to pull in impossible marks regularly thrills amateur football followers.

Damien Crowe (17) : A tough, courageous and very very fast wingman, Damien never gives up. Whether driving forward with long penetrating runs or harassing, opponents into error, 110% effort is always assured .

Mick Dillon (41) : Mick has made his mark as a half fwd who "knows where the goals are" complemented by a very high work rate throughout the whole game and goes into the finals in excellent form .

Andy Evans (11) : A newcomer to the club this year, Andy turned in a fine performance in his first A Grade final, A highly skilled and very versatile player capable of filling any number of positions .

Pat O'Callaghan (22) : Tall, agile and deceptively quick, Pat is a great asset to the side, whether providing drive from the ruck, taking a big mark in the goal square or dashing forward from the wing , Danny Smith (21) : Courageous back pkt who always manages to stay cool under pressure . Sets up many attacking moves from the last line of defence .

John Tully (34) : Athletic full back who attacks the ball with a lot of aggression . A key player in getting the ball to ground level for DeLa's running players .

Sam Hunter (14) : Strong marking playerwhoseversatilitycan make him an asset either in defence or attack .

At his best when shows plenty of aggression .

Damien Toohey (12): Fearless defender who is a great source of inspiration for teammates. His ability to win the hard ball and give itto ateammate in a better position makes him a vital player in DeLa's defence .

Maurice Mastrioanni (1) : An U19 player with extraordinary courage, 'Moose' has developed into a valuable on-ball player. Very strong overhead, he is a important link in the De La Salle running game .

Paul Fiume (2) : A very talented utility who has served the side well at both ends of the ground, Paul's strength has been his overhead marking, a sharp turn of pace and an uncanny goal sense.

Pat Mannix (50) : Pat has developed into one of the sides most valuable players, providing great drive with his pinpoint kicking off the 1/2 back flank, has been decisive with his ruckwork, and can cause havoc on the fwd line with his uncanny goal sense .

COACH : BERNIE DUN N Finishing on top and winning the second semi final has given us a breather that has freshened us immensely . It has allowed our training to be solely focussed on avenging our 1992 loss in the Grand Final to Collegians, and we are well prepared for this assault .

After winning last year's premiership, Collegians have shown themselves to be a formidable opponent with good performances in both their finals, after losing their last two home and away matches .

The De La Salle players have responded similarly to a mid season slump with a strong finish and today's game promises to be a close encounter . Big Finals games like this go to the team that grasps the opportunity during that five or ten minute period when the game is to be won . This is where our strengths lie and they will come to the fore today .

COACH : LEIGH CARLSO N Despite faltering in the last two games of the home and away season, we have regrouped and proven ourselves to be worthy grand finalists . Both of our finals have been cutthroat and today is no different . No one remembers runners-up, only premiers, and this is our goal this afternoon .

We are playing well atthe right time, and ourteam balance is well settled . Our experienced players will hold us in good stead and mixed with the added youth and enthusiasm of the younger players we are capable of giving all the way .

We dare not undersell De La Salle as a side, or for that matter a club, but we believe in our ability and aim to make the 1993 A Section Premiership Cup ours .

COACH : PAUL O'BRIEN Having finished on top after the home and away season, and winning on way to the Grand Final via the Second Semi Final, we are well placed for today's meeting with Therry . Our form, despite a lapse towards the middle of the year, has been consistent without being outstanding, and we enter today's game full of confidence and enthusiasm .

We are aware of Therry's abilities both in defence and attack, and know only too well that to relax against such an opposition would be costly. However, the players are eager for Saturday to come around and know only too well that despite winning through to A-section in 1994, the task of being promoted as premiers still awaits us . This is a goal that the Old Melburnians F.C. set themselves after a disappointing finals series in 1992, but a win today will erase all those memories

COACH : TERRY MINN With thirteen wins from eighteengames this season Therry have been one of the form sides of B Section . After relegation in 1992 from A section, following a rapid rise through the lower sections, Therry has proved it is a worthy contender for A-section in 1994. Our success must be attributed to the addition of a number of new and younger players, who, combined with the more experienced ones have seen us perform consistently throughout 1993. We reliase the Old Melburnians unit will be a tough combination, and are aware of their strengths . We know we are capable of winning and our attitude to the finals and 1993 in general has been positive . We await the first bounce with eager anticipation, because the ultimate reward is a Senior Premiership .

GRAND F INAL EDITION 5 YEARS AGO - 1988 Ormond started "red hot" favourites against Old Xaverians who had won the right to the grand final with two good finals performances .

Well, the tipsters were right as Ormond triumphed by 7 gls, 14 .18 to 8.11 . Old Xaverians kicked towards the goals at Glenhuntly Rd end with a handy breeze . The Zavs made reasonable use of the wind and their defence stood firm to give them a 21 pt lead at the first change, 4 .3 to 1 .0. Ormond with their on-ball players dominating moved into top gear to kick 7 .7 to 0.2 and had a winning lead of 26 pts at half time . Ormond held Zavs comfortably in the second half . The goals were shared between Stuart Carboon 3, Phil Kingston 2, Steve McCooke 2, Paul Schuhkra ft 2, Andrew Jobling 2, Paul Sutherland and Craig Tonkin . Best forthe'Monds were Paul Forsyth, David McDonald, Stuart Carboon, Paul Cox, Phil Kingston and Ross Tonkin .

Mick Atkins and John McKay continued their good finals form for Zavs, and Ricky Marks, Andrew Grummett, David McKay and Geoff G re etham were strong players, and goals were scored bySteve Cu rtain 3, Grummett 2, Jack Tiernan, Anthony Callen, and David Taylor. Umpires were Greg Hardeman and Cameron Swale .

The "B" Section Parkside maintained their recent supremacy over Kew, Winning the flat 15 .8 to 5.16 . Best were Buckhorn, Williams, Rowe, Sherlock, Papas (P) and O'Kayli, S . Lord, Bruno, Thornley and Schober. Umpires were Kevin Segota and Peter Wiseman .

10 YEARS AGO - 1983 De La outlasted University Blues, to win the 'A' Section flag, its fourth in six years, with the last three victories against the Blues .

Blues led by a point at the last change, after a great third term recovery but were no match for De La in the final term with De La kicking 5.1 to 1 .3 Harrington, Connolly, Hollier, Greene, R . and G . M cHen ry (De La) and Angel, Yeo, Jennings, Jackson, R . Curnow, O'Brien ( Uni Blues) were best.

Bulleen/Templestowe led by 6 gls at 3 qtr time in the 'B' Section Grand Final against Kewthen Kew, who played poorly all day, slammed on 5 gls in 11 minutes to get within 5 pts, and then its next shot hit the post, and this misfortune seemed to take some of the sting out of the side . Bulleen/Templestowe then went away to win by 17 pts. Best were Delanty, Bird, Delaney, Farley, Pace, Palmer ( Buileen/Temp) and Hayes, Burden, Smith, Anderson, Jackomes, Blay (Kew) .

35 YEARS AGO - 196 3 Collegians win their second successive A' Section premiership in shocking conditions. Three goals with 10 minutes to go, Old Scotch's position looked hopeless, then they got two goals but Collegians' defenders stood firm and they won by a goal, 9 .6 to 8.6 . Old Paradians, beaten by Uni Blacks in the second semi, went to a 6 gl lead in the first qtr only to see Blacks come back and lead narrowly at half time. Parade again took a good lead in the third term and maintained their advantage until the finish, 21 .13 to 15.14. De La Salle went to an early lead in 'C' and then withstood a strong challenge by Parkside in the last quarter to take out the flag, 6.12 to 5.8 .

MICHAEL MANNIX . Mick, younger brother of The Freak, Pat, has had the same background, coming up through the under age teams and U/19's, then gave good service to the Club XVI I I for two years . This year he pushed up into the Reserves where he has given solid and consistent form all year and is regarded as one of the most reliable contributors, some games have been as inspirational as his big brothers . MAURICE MASTORANI . Moose has created a character of his own and is very popular with players and supporters. PETER GERSC H Peter's second season with the VAFAUA has been outstanding .

Appointments to the C-F Section representative game in Adelaide and the VAFA-VCFL game at Elsternwick could easily see Gerschy 'bounce' into the ultimate appointment as one of the two A section Grand Final umpires.

WAYNE HINTON Wayne's season this year was highlighted by his appointment to the big VAFA-SAAFL match in Adelaide and last week's C section Grand Final .

'Chuck's' top six status means that he can look forward to other big appointments in the future.

MARTIN JACKSO N Marty has not put a foot wrong this season on the way to winning the ' Kit-Kat Strike Rate' and gaining the new nickname of ' Book-em Danno' .

His performances see him pushing for selection for one of the two big appointments on that one day in September.

ANDREW KILNER The jovial secretary of the VAFAUA approached the 1993 season determined to go one better than last year's B section Grand Final . Given his performances throughout the year ' Stud' certainly has the chance of realising his goal of the 1993 A Section Grand Final .

RICHARD SIMON Yet another consistent season by the VAFAUA's Milk Bar Manager. Richie has enjoyed tremendous success in his five years with the VAFAUA and this weekend could see him equalling John Horwood's record of five A Section Grand Finals.

JUSTIN TOOHEY Justin has worked hard throughout the season to once again achieve top six status with appointment to last week's C Section Grand Final .

As Bomber's speech writer the Judge' can look forward to getting the word for other big appointments in the future .

FOOTBALL, FINA LS AND PLENTY OF FU N One of the biggest and most exciting events on the VAFA calendar is the A Section Grand Final on Sunday 19 September of which VicHealth and Dental Health Services are once again, proud to be involved .

On the day, we will have the Mouthguard Maze Marquee in operation providing children and adults with games such as Spin and Win, Joker's Handball, Mouthguard Teasers, competitions, activities and information mouthguards and sport safety . There will be loads of fabulous prizes and give-aways for each child entering the maze and thanks to the VAFA, a chance to win a VicKick footy DHS Sportsbag, Travel and Guzzler bottle in our free raffle draw . Our friendly and enthusiastic staff will be there to help you join in the fun .

Our mascot, M .C. Mouthguard will make his debut

on Grand Final day, performing his rap routine in the mouthguard marquee every hour from 12 noon.

Quite a few have already enjoyed the rewards of a grand final while others will be having a run around this weekend . All the very best to that last group representing us out there on Elsternwick Park on the final two days .

• Some other umpires have capped off their year with the invite to join the VSFL squad for pre-season . Field umpires Brad Lowe, Tim Sutcliffe, Luke Symons, Gavin Keane, and Mathew Head join boundary umpires Luke Russell and Marcus Tierney and goal umpire Gordon Chalmers for a crack at the big time. Pre-season starts next week boys.

• Good get of the week goes to Chris Keeton for his last minute pick-up atthe D Reserve Grand Final . Keats must have been sofired upforthe grand final because he thought he'd try a party-trick in the 3rd qtr . Yes the umpires nightmare - bouncing the ball into your head right in front of the crowd . • Also on Buster Keeton . He scored the 'dream' social fixture last Sunday week earning $100 cash, dinnerfor four at the Carousel and a $200 drinks voucher (one night) at the Chevron . The match between Chevron and Carousel at the Harry Trott was his most enjoyable appointment for 1993.

• Congratulations to Anthony (Sogabop) Sim pson'Son of Graham and brother of Peter' and his lovely wife, Allison, upon the recent birth of their bouncing (notflagwaving) baby boy, Michael Brian. Hes already targetted for grand final day in 2013 .

• Good to catchup with fellow-scribe, the new slimline Tommy Brain . We've invited Tom down to Elsternwick Park next year who now looks fitter than his umpiring days for the Zedders ressies . Or maybe he could get a game for the Rovers . .'?

• Our last profile ison a boundary-rider who is hoping to make it two in a row for A Grade Grand Finals this Sunday. He's the one with the bushy black beard Jeff rey Francis Wright . Nickname: Gum, Don Burke .
