Four winners out of 5 games is better than enything Peter French could do . (See you Peter) . Collegians (my early tip for the Grand Final), provided the round's biggest surprise (only by the margin) with a powerful display against Uni Blues . Ace goal kicker [an Roberts bagged 7 very impressive goals having solid support from Ray Berzins (4 goals) and a lively Jimmy Bennett . Greg Tregear had a great game as did Tony Parkin (son of David) . With Schober missing injured the Lions backline was great. Special mention of ruckman Damien Phillips and Sel "Stretch" Hunt, who worked very well in tandem to combat Uni Blues, Mike Yandell, Blues Da ry l Gust worked very hard, as did Mark McCa rty (future state player?) and captain John 'Mr. Recruiter' Kanis, Richard `Drugs' Furphy and M ike Yandell were the best of the rest . Collegians had 10 goalkickers, and ' M r. Smooth now ` M r Sore' Tony Schlicht just kept watching the easy goals being kicked . 'Mr. Recruiter' John Kanis might have to recruit some more players if the Blues are to challenge the ferocious Lions later in the year.

Ormond easily accounted for a young and inexperienced Old Xaverians side. The young boys from Old Xavs took the game right up to Ormond to be trailing by only 9 points at the long break then Ormond stepped on the gas kicking 9 goals to their opponents 3 after the half time break . Mark McDonald played a sensational game at centre half back, as did Tim Hille at full back, with the two key forwards for Old Xavs well and truly beaten, and with Scotty Taylor ruck work, certainly gave Ormond first use of the ball . Justin Clarkson (ex Brighton Grammar) also showed out, in a good display of team football, Old Xavs had many triers, none better than rover Dan Meagher and ruckman Mark McClelland (ex Caulfield Grammar) who tried hard but were outclassed . John Tully, David Taylor & Chris Mortenson also had a ret hot go but class prevailed and Ormond ran out easy winners.

Popular Ormond half back flanker Paul Forsyth plays his 150th game this week . Paul has played in the last 5 premiership sides for Ormond . In total Paul has played in 7 premiership sides. Not bad for an old fellow!

North Old Boys thrashed a very disappointing Parkside . North Old Boys kicked with the wind and quickl y added 6 goals . Parkside are struggling with the pace of A Grade. Half time saw North Old Boys 12 goals to Parkside's miserable two points . After half time Nth Old Boys added 10 goals to Parkside improve?, or did Nth Old Boys relax. Red Devils coach, Wayne Bannister was very critical of his teams performance . He expects a marked improvement from his senior players . Nth Old Boys centre half back, Marcus Boyd dominated, as did 'Mr. All Australian' Paul Considine, Peter Leigh & Con Alevlas, were also ve ry prominent . Nth Old Boys coach Mark Hannaber ry would have been happy with 11 players sharing the goals . Parkside's Nick Mitchell rucked without much support, to be name the Red Devils best . Nino Vincitorio, Mark Sherlock, Brian `Ugly' Glasgow were the best of a poor team effort .

Old Paradians beat Kew by 3 goals in a match which Old Paradians coach Serge D'Angelo must share in his players victory. Kew leading by 3 goals at half time were playing the better football, however Serge shifted Peter Wood, who was being beaten by 'Bomber' Burden from the centre to half forward and his 5 goals was the difference between the 2 sides . Half back Tim Beare turned in a great game along with Peter Wood (5 goals), David Way (ruck), and Paul Considine. Old Paradians supporters were comparing Bre ndon Considine with the Swans Rod Carter, Why? Kew's Brett Fitzpatrick 5 goals making his debut was a good effort . Adrian Jenkins, Nigel G ri ffiths and Peter Burke (much better than the previous week)"were the better performed Kew players . Kew who have been training longer than any other V .A .F.A . club have only kicked 6 and 5 goals after half time in the opening two matches (too much too soon, we'll see) .

Marcellin led from start to finish to beat a very disappointed Old Scotch . Both sides made 2 compulsory changes from winning sides the previous week. Marcellin opened the game with a 6 goal first quarter of champagne football forcing the Cardinals to play catch up football all day, they failed by only 17 points, which was a credit to Coach Simon Tallent, who has installed a never say die attitude, into the Cardinals. Marcellin's Captain Matt Getson has started the year like 'Peter Daicos' and his form must be very pleasing to the Marcellin coach M urray Browne. Ruck rover Mark Cooper & Mark Delahunt continued to impress along with Steve O'Flynn at full back . Another former U19 player Chris Mason bagged 5 goals and I expect continued improvements from the youngsters at Marcellin .

Old Scotch were well served by centreman Brian Hodge and ruckman John Moir along with Andrew Smith who gave all, Ed Allen 4 goals was a gutsy effort . Captain Robbie Fuller played below his usual best, and this alone was one of the main reasons the Cardinals went down in a very entertaining game .

Now to today's games . The match of the round tomorrow between Marcellin and North Old Boys at Elsternwick Park will be decided in the ruck and I expect Matt Getson and G reg Origlasso to give the running players from the eagles a big advantage . Danger players for the eagles to watch Paul Considine and Marcus Boyd both key position players for North Old Boys . The Eagles by 20 points .

Uni Blues travel to Pitcher Park where they will have little trouble accounting for the undermanned Red Devils .

Mike Yandel l will control the rucks however his opponent znick 'Ironmonger' Mitchell has been the best performed Red Devil for the first 2 matches . Parkside will welcome back Frank Sansonetti, Leo Panjari & John Pappas to give them much needed experience. Mike Yeo should return for Uni Blues to give the students a good height advantage. The Blues by 50 points.

Collegians playing premiership football will be too tall and experienced for the Old Xaverians side at the Harry Trott Oval . Damien Phillips & Sel Hunt to dominate the ruck and Old Xaverians to be badly beaten . The Lions by 70 points.

Kew travel to the `Mon' Oval and I expect Ormond to hand out a football lesson to the boys from Kew . Scotty Taylor in the ruck has been great so far this season, and he will be too tall for Tony Peric. Jobling & Kingson are due for a good game, and with Ormond's height advantage, I expect them to kick a big score. Key players for Kew 'Bomber' Burden, Brett Fitzpatrick & Matt Cavanagh . The Mons by 70 points.

Old Scotch disappointed with last weeks loss will find their opponents a hard nut to crack . I lean to Old Paradians to win in a tough physical game. Old Paradians have had Captain Frank Gleeson out injured, along with another state player Owen Abrahams, yet they have continued to win . David Way, Parade against John Moir, Scotch, in the ruck what a battle . I'm sure the state selectors will be more than interested in the outcome . Old Paradians players are very adaptable, and I expect their overall team evenness to be their biggest asset against the Cardinals who rely on the same players to perform each week . Key players for oOld Paradians, Way, Considine, (Brendon, Mathew Paul) against Fuller, Moir, Reddish, Hodge & Smith . Paradians by 10 points.

Pre sident of Old Paradians, Maurie Considine really must be a proud father, each week the Considine boys take the field . (Maurie have I said enough to get a free beer next visit to Bundoora)?

I have had many dealings with Peter, when I was President at Parkside, and now as an executive member of the VA .FA . I have always found Peter the most approachable likeable person in the V A .FA. Peter will be greatly missed, however knowing Peter he will still be involved in the V.A .F.A .

P.S . I hope his replacement can "kick on" beter than Peter's performance of late !

Victory after the final siren .

Old Brighton player, And rew Cooper, was infringed in the Brighton goal square on the siren and was awarded a free kick which was converted . This left Old Melburnians five points down according to the time keeper. However the goal umpire's score differed . The players from both sides were in total confusion as the outcome of the game and the Executive Committee will officially decide the outcome on Wednesday, 26th April .

This situation should not have occurred and the total confusion was compounded by the fact that the score board is not fit for an Under 13s match .

For Old Brighton Tim Burns, Malcolm Shippen and Tony Grant played well, while Peter Murray, ever-green Rowan Blown and Jeremy Nichols did well for Old Melburnians.

Old Trinity had a good win over Monash Blues by 3 goals in a tight game at Monash . At one stage during the last quarter, Monash lead by 9 points but Trinity's running game saw them over run the home team by the final siren . Again, Rogers played a solid game for Old Trinity as did Forbes and Norman . For Monash, Barry Seaton, the "gutsy" Ben Hodgson and goal sneak Hildebrand performed well .

Uni Blacks proved the "Bucchan Bros" wrong by beating the inaccurate Bulleen-Templestowe . Both sides had equal opportunity to kick goals but it was Bulleen's poor kicking that proved costly. Veteran, Wines, proved that he has still got a couple of years left by putting in a solid game as did Pappas and Gray. For Bulleen Templestowe, Robinson, Rowl and Tsiotinas all contribute d St. Bernards defeated Fawkner after amassing 26 minors . Coach Frank Melican would be disappointed at not being able to convert more regularly, however Fawkner players put the St . Bernards' forwards under plenty of pressure. Best for St . Bernards were Federico, Nathan and McInerney. For Fawkner, Mitchell, P. Tymms and Bar rett played well .

In a physical game at Elsternwick Park on Sunday, De La Salle exerted their authority over Therry CCOB .

Therry seemed to rally with only 17 men on the ground in the 3rd quarter, however with the help of Campbell' s

goals De La Salle ran out easy visitors. Zanetti, for Therry, kicked four and was ably assisted by O'Rourke , nd Matton .

This week's predictions are : old Trinity to defeat Bulleen Templestowe De La Salle to defeat Monash Blues St Bernards to defeat Old Melburnians Old Brighton to defeat Therry CBOC University Blacks to defeat Fawkne r

C Grade - C. Rowston

Decisive wins to Old Haileybury, Banyule, Caulfield and Balaclava clearly indicate the better sides in C Section at the moment . Many clubs are rebuilding and acclimatizing to the standard, therefore judgement on t`--? losing sides will have to wait .

Last Saturday's results were dramatic, the top two are clearly goals ahead but today will sought them out .

Balaclava versus Old Haileybury and Banyule at home to Caulfield will be the highlights of the round .

Last week Preston made the winners list with a strong showing over St Kilda . Preston teamed well, th e forward line was given more opportunities and the backline held sway . Four goals to Phillips and Mark Mason and their better players being De Bono, A . Philp, Ewing, O'Brien, B ry dson and P. Bullock . St . Kilda held on till half time with only a couple of goals in it . Again Tony Riddell showed his usual strength with 5 goals, but after the break St Kilda's inability to deliver up forward made them suffer a bad loss at home . Best for the Saints : Berenger, Struth, Lake, Riddell and Murphy .

Old Haileybury proved too strong and out-classed their Ivanhoe opponents all day. David Fletcher winning in tlie ruck, David Connell ruck roving, Chris McKenzie in the centre, Andre w Walden up forward, Ga ry Phillips, John Bingham and the whole side for that matter were just too good . Poor showing by Ivanhoe were unable to convert up forward all day and really must now take stock, or the club will capitulate even further . Let's hope they will perform better today. Best players werew M . Thackway, A. Burro and C . Rose.

Old Ivanhoe were thrashed by Banyule. Not all is lost . Old Ivanhoe are rebuilding and developing, their aim at this stage is to secure a future in C Section . Unfortunately the first two games have resulted in significant losses, but they have displayed glimpses of good football and hopefully better things to come. Better players were Peter Skalberg who rucked all day, Bruce Yarwood, Robbie McKenzie and a second half performance from young John Stevens and Cockerill . Banyule were simply too good !

At Albert Park Caulfield crushed Hampton Rovers with better application, while the Rovers lacked concentration under pressure. Both sides displayed good passages of play but Caulfield showed excellent running skills, hard tackling, and direct ball handling . Eight goals up forward by Cam mCooney was a highlight while T. Royals, Brohier, Morrissey, Horton, Boston and Lowe were their better players amongst a side which really impressed me . Hampton Rovers must bounce back, learn from their mistakes and I believe will benefit from this game . Better players were Mat Salmon, Michael Coutts, Craig Amoo re and Darren McConville.

Balaclava didn't surprise with their first win against St Kevins but unfortunately neither club sent their reports .

Now to today's games: C Section features at Elsternwick Park today with a double fixture . First up Balaclava play Old Haileybury .

On form, so far, Old Haileybury to win but this will their biggest test for the season . The result will indicate the true level of ability of both sides . The second match played in front of the 'CDEFG' grade selectors, see Hampton Rovers versus St Kevins . The Rovers to win as St Kevins have done very little to date. St Kilda at home to Old Ivanhoe, the home side - just . Preston to defeat Ivanhoe and the match of the day Banyule to defeat Caulfield in what will be a great game. After watching Caulfield it's hard to go against them but when in doubt go for the home side.

I must make mention of Garry Phillips from Old Haileybury who has made the State squad . A great effort - well done Garry.

D Section by Ian Ca Round 2 continued to provide results which baffled this tipster and made a myster of pre-season form . MHSO are the biggest culprits, so far recording losses of 55 and 89 points after being considered a reliable early season pace-setter. At the same time, Whitefriars have shot to the top of the table with combined winning margins of 230 points!! Whilst other pre-season fancied teams, Ajax and State Bank have been most inconsistent .

After two rounds only three sides have an unblemised record - Whitefriars, Old M entonians and Thomastown . At the other end of the ladder, three sides are yet to record a win - Bulleen United, hAHSOf . and Elsternwick . MHSOB couldn't find that someting extra to help celebrate "Tamba" M artin's 250th game and now face the prospect of a hat-trick of losses, courtesy of Old Mentonians. The Panthers are looking good, with veterans Beynon, Newman and Norton showing the way to what should be an opening hat-trick of victories and a firm grip on the ladder's 2nd top position .

Traditional old rivals, Bulleen United and State Bank meet at Bulleen, in what is a must game for the Bulls .

Early season losses can prove costly and the Bull's coach, Vic Harvie, knows they can't afford another one .

Last week they showed some glimpses with the magnificent M orley back to his B&F winning best . The two " Barker Blond Brother", Paris and Brett Harvie, are starting to find their feet and should help the Bulls to a narrow win .

Powerhouse travel to Thomastown for what should be a fairly close game. The visitors have good key forwards who like kicking goals and like telling everyone about them too, but the pace of Thomastown should be the key to another win for the home side .

Ajax take on Elsternwick, and the W ickers have had a bad start to 1989 with combined loosing margins totalling over 200 points! Unfortunately, they look like recording another loss against Ajax, who will be keen to bounce back after last week's debacle .

:I eserve and should prove too strog for the boys from down the bay but stranger things have happened .

Brunswick and North Brunswick should provide some fiery football in this, the first clash in a round robin =-ries featuring three sides from Brunswick . These three sides could provide some great games before th e son is over. Finally, what would have to be the M atch of the Day, Latrobe at home to Aquinas. Latrobe d to perform well here if they are to be taken seriously in there bid for a place in this year's finals . Aquinas ve proved themselves worthy of their place in E Section and I believe some at Latrobe still remember travelling Ringwood in 1987 only to return home with their heads hung low after a 27 goal plus drubbing . These results now leave us with three unbeaten sides - an interesting situation for this week and a tipsters nightmare. This week's results will see some important questions answered . Are Old Essendon in business?

What has happened to Doveton? And can Latrobe be a force in 'E' Section . Who will go into Round 4 next week without a win and who can remain in the four undefeated . West Brunswick at home to Heatherton should be a good physical clash with the home ground advantage being the difference giving the game to Wes : Brunswick . St . Bedes are hosts to Old Essendon with both sides capable of playing excellent football . Last week's form would indicate a win for Old Essendon but St Bedes could bounce back with a win . Old Geelonc :travel to Brans Oval and on current form should take the points there . Doveton have Peninsula at the Powe :

Only three errors of judgement prevented me attaining a perfect selection score last week, but as Big Malcolm ce said "Pre-selection wasn't meant to be easy" . Big Mal of course has put his money on Macca the M oderate but I reckon the graffiti's on the Goldstein brick venereals for Macca and a sounder investment would be a uble of the Professor and the Noddies who made the Undertakers look about as pacey as a set of pall ~arers . The Noddies had more receivers than the Trimbole family as they ran rampage on Boot Hill to record r r .rgin of about eighting lan's. Sainter's Coach, Roland Magro reckons that fitness was part of the reason the deficit so Coburg residents can expect to see a bit of gravestone leaping over the next few weeks . Meanwhile, i~ ia Ifoddies' coach, Jimmy "The Fruiters" Fotiniotis, is more than pleased with his charges who have a 'e of game that other F-Troopers will be hard pressed to counter. The Noddies run strongly out of the backline, I>e superb delivery skills, mark with authority and, as is evidenced by Reserves scores, have considerable nth . They're already short priced favourites for the F-Grade Flag and are current[ 10 to 1 to complete the hat trick by winning E-Grade in 1990 and D-Grade in 1991 .

In fact, the Noddies are looking so good at this stage, that other F-Troop Clubs have hired Jeffrey Kennett a consulstant on coalitions with the basic aim of reducing F-Grade to 6 sides through mergers and amalgamations . Jeffrey's early recommendations include merging the Artists with the Banjos to form the Young Talent Team with Johnny Young as coach, choreographer and choirmas ; the Redz to combine with the Footrot Flat fellows to form a side with more strike power than the Beijing Student Union ; the Harry Trotters to merge :r h the Zedders to form a corporate sector capable of funding both a reducing in home interest rates .

Out until a firm decision is made, we have to stick with what we've got (such as Billy M c M ahon's offspring n t yht jeans and splendid torso or Ralph being reminded that it's his baby) . The N oddies win in the main me last week was by far the most impressive registered thus far .

In other round two clashes : Old Carey kicked a couple of dozen against W averley to re-assert their claim to leading contender but, with 30 scoring shots to 34, The Waves (they sound so friendly don't they?!!) showed th- 'll win more than they lose this year . The Harry Trotters are up and down like the Aussie Dollar, or like "S vranee Richardson on a Friday night, but they had a morale-boosting win by 23 points against the Artists xho are kicking plenty of goals but have more holes in their defence than Ian Sinclair, The Banjos were 17 ooints clear in their clash at Footrot Flats and may be about to live up to the promise of 1988 . The Eagles ~,- inshilw have kicked only 2 fewer goals than the Noddies and yet are still to register a victory. In a game ,)uncutated by 50 metre penalties (eight resulting in goals) and 118 free kicks, the Zedders and the Redders ~ id enough left in concentration to turn on a thriller with the Redz just outlasting Getta's tellers by a pair of calicos.

PL ,"A.YER OF THE ROUND: Plazenod's prolific possession-winner, Peter "Soapie" Luxford who was a prime mover in the Noddies' ;i=molition job on St Andrews. "Soapie" reckons the next time he plays at St Andrews he'll be in Scotland, earing plus-fours and wielding golf clubs. A part-time student of accountancy, "Soapie" loves his golf as muc h his footy which has really kicked on since his 1988 Reserves Best & Fairest Award . Well done, Peter! The last game should be the best game of the round, Old Camberwell versus Whitefriars . Not only plenty of talent ON the ground, but plenty OFF the ground as well, with both young sides attracting an attractive young following . It's at OCs so this tipster may have to make the quick trip from Bulleen to check out the action . But, back to the important(?) part of the game - Whitefriars to just win !

E Section by Kevin McNicholl Round 2 saw four games played that could have an important bearing on the shaping of things to come .

The first of these saw Doveton travel to East Keilor to do battle with Old Essendon . Honours for the day going to Old Essendon who showed Doveton how E Grade football is played giving Doveton their second defeat of the season by 78 points . Latrobe faced a confident St Bedes at Mentone with both sides desperate to win and be seen as threats this year . Latrobe, after a close tussle for the three quarters, came back in the last quarter and ran out winners by 49 points . Heatherton were at home to Old Geelong with similar pressure on both teams to perform well . Old Geelong seemed just the better team winning by less than one goal . Aquinas at home proved too strong for Brunswick and ran out relatively easy winners over Brunswick by 31 points . North Brunswick joined the winners list with an easy 92 point win over UHSOB which should help boost the confidence of the boys from North Brunswick who have some tough opposition to face over the next few weeks . Peninsula and West Brunswick met down by the bay in what proved to be an easy win for West Brunswick doubling Peninsula's score.

ON MY SELECTION : Last Week (2) - Current Percentage Accuracy (60% ) This Week : Match of the Day : Williamstown versus Old Carey at Willy.

Both sides have started the season with reasonable form and both finished last season in competitive positions .

Old Carey have the advantage of 2 games under their belt and this should be enough to give them a 20 to 30 ponit lead the close despite Willy's notorious homeground advantage which is about as intimidating as a date with Wendy Harmer.

Other Matches : The Banjos (at home to the Harry Trotters) are about as predictable as a stomach after a Chines takeaway but I'm prepared to tip them to win this one by about 10 points . If they lose this win they're a"toss of the coin" job from now on . Eltham have kicked 20 goals in each match but even 20 may not be enough to stop the Noddies from recording a hat trick amongst the thistles at Mulgrave Meadows. The Noddies by at least eight twins . The Eagles can't crack it at the moment and I fancy they'll still bs seeking a victory after visiting Waverley . The Waves by 3 or 4 twins. The Sainters will be anxiousto atone for their thrashing last week, but I feel they'll find the Redz on the boil and ready to record their third victory in a row. Redz by 20 points after a hard struggle .

UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Already after two rounds the handicappers must be asking questions about the current form . How good is the Old Trinity side when once again their players demolished their opponents by seventy five points . The nquished side was Thomastown . Mazenod has already stamped its claim as a top side through its two big ns . This time Aquinas was on the receiving endof a one hundred and thirty eight point drubbing . G SECTIO N With four selections correct from six games my G Section form improved from its humble beginning in Round 1 .

Collegians and St Bernards staged an interesting game from which Collegians emerged victorious by seven ponits . Port Colts continued on their winningway when they defeated De La Salle by thirty one points . In the contest between eastern neighbours Marcellin despite frittering away many scoring opportunities proved too strong for Bulleen Templestowe by nine points. Old Xaverians opened their season's account when they disposed of Monash Whites by twenty eight points. In the upset of the round Kew defeated Bloods by twenty five points . My other incorrect forecast was when an inaccurate Old Melburnians lowered their colours by five points to bitter rivals Old Scotch .

H SECTIO N Balaclava denied me a perfect score in Saturday's games when they triumphed over State Bank by ten points . Salesian College made it two victories ina row when they defeated Old Geelong by the wide margin of ninety three points . Richmond Central also won their second successive game when they had a sixty two point victory over CBC St Kilda . Therry demolished Powerhouse to record a huge one hundred and seventeen point victory. In the Sunday game Kontias had more use of the ball and consequently the new side was able to defeat GTV9 by fifteen points . St Kevins had the bye.

UNDER 19 SECTION 1 Ormond made amends for losing last year's preliminary final as they effortlessly cruised to a one hundred and fifty two point victory over Banyule. Whitefriars had thirty eight points to spare against an inaccurate Old Paradians Green while Collegians were able to defeat University Blues by forty eight points . Old Haileybury continued their stamp of authority in the section when they won by forty six points against last year's premiers De La Salle Blue. Old Xaverians regained their winning habits when they overran traditional foe Marcellin to win by sixty two points . Three correct out of five in Round 2 serves to indicate my form can improve .

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 University Blacks continued to impress, this time by defeating North Old Boys by seventy points . Old Brighton Grammarians were largely untroubled to defeat Monash Blues by the wide margin of ninety one points . Greater accuracy enabled Caulfield Grammarians to tie with Bulleen Templestowe on Timber Ridge Reseve . How long can this section keep producing tied games? There was no need to for a photo finish in the inter college rivals game at Bundoora where St Bernards with a forty nine point victory dulled the lustre of Old Paradians Purple, unfurling last season's pennant . Therry was able to defeat Melbourne High School Old Boys by the minimum margin after a very competitive game . Old Scotch who controlled the ball in the aerial duels had a thirty point victory over Old Melburnians after an evenly contested first half .

Long standing rivals De La Salle and St Bernards should play an interesting and closely contested game . I favour St Bernards to win . Monash W hites should be able to score their first victory of the season today by accounting for Marcellin who had a nine point victory in Round 2 as their spark of success. The game of the round will be that at Ovall 11 where Collegians will be home to Bloo &% The Lions have carried all before them whereas Bloods faltered last Saturday. Today I favour Collegians . Traditional rivals and neighbours Old Scotch and Old Xaverians meet in Yarra Park . The Old Xaverians regained composure lats week and are my selection today. Port Colts have started the season well and today should win their third successive game at the expense of Old Melburnians who faltered last week and kicked inaccurately .

H SECTIO N Kontias are at home to Richmond Central who have hit top form early in the season . Both clubs have yet to taste defeat and today I select Richmond Central to win . Two sides whose form is difficult to predict, namely Old Geelong and Balaclava, meet on Como Park. I can only judge on last week's results so I must select Balaclava . Two of last week's losers Powerhouse and CBC St Kilda meet on the Ross Gregory Ova :, Powerhouse form was the worse so I am selection CBC St Kilda to return to the winning list . Two sides who have not inspired their supporters State Bank and GTV9 meet on Oval 4 . I select State Bank purely on history as visitors seldom do well on Oval 4. Therry visit St Kevins for what is a difficult match to forecast . At home I will take the punt and select St Kevins . Salesian College has the bye .

UNDER 19 SECTION 1 Two of last week's losers Banyule and University Blues meet at Banyule. When judged on results to day I suspect Banyule is the less talented side . To offset this is the ground size, winds and the Blue's well documented inconsistency. If the Blues are to win a game it should be today, so I will select them . In a replay of last year's second semi final Whitefriars play Ormond . Both sides have impressed over the past two weeks and today I favour Whitefriars to take the points . Collegians who play Old Xaverians on Oval 11 have the more impressive 1989 form and this coupled with their greater local knowledge should enable the Lions to win . Old Haileybur-, have stated their claim to a top position through their two victories and today I select them to defeat Marcellin who lack the talent of previous years. Two of last week's losers will meet on the Garvey Oval when De La Sall' .

Blue play Old Paradians Green . The Paradians have disappointed while De La has won one game . After much thought I select De La Salle Blue .

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 Melbourne High School Old Boys will be at home to Bulleen Templestowe for an encounter in which one side will score its first victory . At home on their small ground I select Melbourne High . Old Brighton's early form has been of a high standard and consequently I cannot see North Old Boys inflicting their first defeat today especially on the Brighton Beach Oval . Old Brighton should win well . St Bernards, buoyant after two victories, should be able to make it three in a row by defeating Caulfield Grammarians today. University Blacks who have demonstrated a remarkakble transformation in the opening rounds should be able to defeat Therr ,% on the Crawford Oval today. Old Paradians Purple seeking the elusive first victory journey to the ground of their predecessors to play Old Scotch . Let by Gibbs in the ruck and Sinclair at centre half back the Cardinals have won their two games impressively. Today I forecast three wins a row for Old Scotch . Old Melburnians fourney to Monash Blues. Visitors often experience difficulty coping with Monash conditions . Today, obviously to the chagrin of my army of OM readers, I tip M onash Blues to be victorious .

UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Fawkner make the long journey east to play Aquinas who will be anxious to atone for last week's defeat .

At home I select Aquinas. Parkside journey north to Thomastown where the winds and small ground size may prove hazardous to the visitors. When arguing on 1989 form I come to the same conclusion that Thomastown will win . Hampton Rovers face the long trip west to play Albanvale who will be anxious to retain their winning form . The Rovers will be keen to maintain their record so I must tip on what I know and select Hampton Rovers .

St Kevins who obviously lack the talent of their 1988 counterparts should be able to record their first victory today at the expense of Bulleen United . Two of the successful sides so far, Old Trinity and De La Salle Goic meet at Bulleen At home I favour Old Trinity. Mazenod who appear to be the section pacesetters should record another big victory at Ivanhoe whose 1989 form has not been of the standard displayed by Mazenod .

OTF was recently sent a copy of a talk given by legendary Assumption College coach, Mr Ray Carroll to National Football League Administrators and the Directors of Coaching from the 8 States and Territories .

Ray's talk was on "The Changing Nature of School and College Football across the past thirty years" .

FROM THE BOUNDARY by Ray Carrol l I was recently invited to address at VFJ House a seminar of National Football League Administrators and Directors of Coaching from the eight States and Territories assembled for the Aussie Footy NCAS Conference .

The Convenor was Mr Terry O'Sullivan, the Melbourne based NFL 'Aussie Footy' director.

Basically, the assemblage wished to hear thoughts on "The Changing Nature of School and College Football across the past thirty years" - but the allowed scope was wider .

I have long held the view that football, cricket and tennis have been - and remain - central to our lives . Each sport contains important lessons in life and aspects of all three are important as teachers.

A game of football reflects life in miniature and in suburb, township, and rural community the winter ritual represents one of the last bastions of the "gathering of the clan" - a kin if you like to the Market Days and religious festivals of other times.

The sport has a vital social and economic impact and is important to the welfare of an area and its people .

In the modern era the challenges facing our national winter game appear to be formidable . Sadly there has not yet appeared to be any significant Government appreciation of our truly native game's role in Australian life. There is funding for all manner of ideas and activities but the work, the fund-raising to keep Australian Rules viable in an age of proliferating counter-attraction is left to relatively small numbers of dedicated officials .

As a very young teacher at Kilmore in the late fifties and beyond I was at once involved in the team games - football in winter; cricket and tennins in summer.

There was not then a lot of co-ordinated junior football at club level but there was plenty in the Schools, both State and independent .

Many dedicated teachers were available to guide young charges and in the main these mentors recognized that the traditional sports were essential to the community fabric in city or the "bush".

Today there are not the number of dedicated coaches in the schools for a variety of reasons . Also we now seem to be in an era when for a goodly percentage the philosophy seems to be : dabble in everything ; master little ; be content with mediocrity.

We are dictated to increasingly by People in High Places who espouse little and stand for less .

The decline of organized and integrated team structured sports in many Schools saw the rise of Junior Sport at Club Level - this really snowballed, possibly to the point of OVERKILL, where winning was everything at too early an age and far too many had "done it all" by age 13, 14, 15 and then wanted out .

Tender age Juniors had played 100, 200 games, won Best and Fairests, held Trophies aloft - there was no thrill or challenge ahead by the mid-teens .

For nearly fifteen years now a declining number has been willing or able to teach the mainstream sports and work at instilling feelings of pride and mateship into youngsters in many formative areas .

The wheel has begun possibly to turn for football at Schoolboy level . The VFL-run, newspaper backed Shield competition for Secondary Schools has gone from strength to strength with well over 300 teams now appearing annually in the three tiers . Pride in School and colours is again being demonstrated on the fields of winter reintroducing a healthy competitive edge to School football .

The game and what it can stand for though has today to be more pointedly highlighted than formerly .

Faced with mush-rooming counter attractions, and especially the boom in basketball, soccer gridiron not to mention the soft option pursuits (and isn't today the day of the soft option?) - football administrators will have to vigorously defend the games noblest traditions and ideals and promote it ever more positively - highlighting tile code's high points - its variety, its skills, its environment, and the fact it is played in God's fresh air and sunshine .

The game must be made more attractive to the battler, not just the elite . Football away from the Big League must be encouraged more . Country Associations and officials need every help to combat the drift to the cities, the loss of talent .

In some ways, hopefully the Draft will help redress this problem . School football can be fostered by having significant people in areas visit Schools - arrange clinics, show videos etc . To represent the School team should be viewed again as a positive to build pride and spirit and foster comradeship which is then carried on through the ranks of town or district teams .

This is one of the wonderful pluses of team sports and our football is a marvellous vehicle in this regard .

A major problem of course is a shortage of people in the Schools able or willing to organize youngsters in team games and spend time in instruction .

Something needs to be done in this area . Schemes like Kanga Cricket and its footy equivalent are great but it is at secondary level where the need is greatest, in the formative years .

In the local competitions the brunt of the "labour of love" falls on too few . There needs to be as much reinforcement and support as possible.

In the end the real success or failure of youth football rests with those in charge, the coaches or mentors .

Boys still respond to enthusiasm and interest as they have ever done . They still appreciate a disciplined structure with goals to strive for. They quickly recognize apathy and inefficiency and become apathetic in turn .

To all of you presently and genuinely committed to the welfare and on-going growth of a glorious game that is so much a part of our heritage I can only say - continue your good work, keep spreading football's gospel with optimism and real devotion and by your zeal and example encourage others to become involved in vital areas of the code's propagation .

Work to influence television stations not to highlight spasmodic violence, but rather to feature the healthy and positive aspects. Teach people involved young and old to respect the game and its laws, to respect umpires, team-mates and opponents. Encourage Junior Associations to endeavour to have people of good character coaching junior teams - who at least till 14 will emphasize the fun aspect of football rather than the win at all costs .

Keep a check on laws to perhaps check on scoring becoming ridiculously easy with scoreline like 25 .20 to 3 .5 . The great final attraction in any sport is the close finish etc .

Footy has for several generations beenpart of our Ilves. It is a superb game of many facets . it behoves all of us to ensure its survival - to render it strong and vital as it heads towards the end of this century and beyond .

There are few sports on this earth able to generate such team-spirit and fervour and as a vehicle for fans to identify with a team's fortunes - its peaks and valleys - it is probably ahead of most .

In former times we have been able to take the code for granted . That is no longer the case . All who believe in it must fight for its continued prosperity .

ROUND 3 - 5 YEARS AGO, 1984 AJAX saluted Michael Ritterman on playing his 200th game with the club by acclaiming his as their greatest ever player. Starting with the club as a 15 year old, then playing with his old school MHSOB in 1970-72, Henry returned to the club in 1973, captaining the club from 1975 to 1980 winning the VAFA Best and Fai rest Award in each section from E to B in a five-year period, a performance never equalled by any other player. After a sojourn of 2 years at St. Bernard's as captain-coach, Henry had returned to the club again this yea and will still playing magniicent football .

10 YEARS AGO - 1979 300 games : a rare milestone to Tony Fink, of Old Carey - best & fairest, committee, Vice President, President - a dazzling, wingman and an example to all at the club .

200 games to St . Kevin's O .B . Don Ma rt in, club best & fairest in 1964, and president in 1970 & 1971 - "his loyalty and dedication to SKOBFC has been outstanding and an inspiration to us all". And would you believe, 150 games as umpire to Brian "Benny" Goodman who joined the "whistlers" after six seasons with Brunswick (VAFA) . Eight grand finals to his credit, including an A & B and Victoria v South Australia clash . Benny was farewelled as he left for a "9 week working (?) holiday in Europe" . (Benny is it true that you acted as a linesman when Elton Jhohn's team Watford played West Ham? NR) .

15 YEARS AGO - 1974

Geelong sprung the surprise of the season when they held on to beat Ormond by 8 points in a tight finish - their first win over Ormond for many years .

The visitors kicked 7 .1 to 1 .1 . in the second quarter.

However, Ormond fought back to take the lead in th e THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989

third quarter. The lead changed several times in an exciting last quarter. Best were Eddy, D. Collins, Birrell (Gael .) and Bourne, Wood, Kozlowski (Ormond) .

Coburg played brilliantly to defeat U. Blues 26.16 (172) to 11 .19 (85) . King, Handley & Gillingham starred for the victors .

Bruce Fergsuon played his 255th game for Collegians, a new club record replacing Graham Daff's record set in 1967.

20 YEARS AGO - 196 9 Coburg emerged as clear leaders with an easy 8 goal win against Old Paradians. Best were N . Beatle, L . Beatle, and McFarlane (6 goals), while Gordon, Kiss and Dowling kept OP's in the game.

Closest game for the round was Parkside's 2 point win over St . Patrick's OC in 'D' Section, 11 .13 to 11 .11, with Stenlaks, J . Byrne and Clarke ( Parkside) and Colbe rt , Maher and Thrum (St . Pat's) best players .

30 YEARS AGO - 195 9 Before the start of the Commercial Bank Elsternwick match, both teams formed a lane of honour for veteran Elsternwick player, Max Leslie who created an Amateur record by being the first player to appear in all section and juniors. Max celebrated by kicking 8 goals.

Coburg held a successful reunion of past and present players with 200 present including old time greated Barney Kilpatrick (down from Tongala), Vin Sterling (Sydney), Neil Gilmour (Numerkah), Howard Lawrence (Point Lonsdale), and first life member. Alf Swales, President Les Fleiner paid tribute to firm foundations laid by the pioneers - seven of the original 1923 were present .

George Ride, Alphington captain and social secretary played his 100th game .

De La Salle containued their good form when their pace was too much for Kew who got to within two points in the final term only to see De La respond strongly to win by 16 points . Best were M . Murphy, McClelland, Pilkington (De La) and Mo rt , James, Milbist (Kew) .

40 YEARS AGO - 194 9 Old Melburnians were in the coldrums - four games, four losses and were hoping that the spectacle of the cardinal guernseys of Old Scotch would provide the fillip to start a paralysing run of success .

BRENDAN MILLAR'S 100TH GA M ES FOR SKOB If anyone deserves to play 100 games, for sheer weight of determination and vocal power, it is Brendan "Wally Gator" Millar who celebrates this milestone with SKOB today. Recruited from Toorak Teachers College, where he was famous for his beer drinking prowess rather than his ball skills, he enjoyed the distinction of being rubbed out in his first game for the club . Fortunately Wally was able to transcend this early blemish and develop the gentler skills of the game such as the legal shirtfront . At 161/2 stone this man is an awesome sight to the opposition . A popular identity around the club, we all wish him well today and for the future as Captain of the SKOB H-Grade side .

MORE BEER, MORE BEER, M ORE BEER 200 UP AT OT' s Peter "Bee ry " Beer today plays his 200th for Old Trinity. "Beery" joined the club in 1977 in A grade and has been with us all the way down to E grade and played a large part in our rise back up to B grade .

In 1979 he was "most improved", and the coach's award . The 80s saw Bee ry win a string of trophies at the club. In 1980 he won the club service award, 1981 again he was best clubman . He was seconds captain in 1985, 86 and 87, second's best and fairest in 1985 and 1986 . Beery has also played in one senior and two reserve grand finals. There is no one more respected at Old Trinity than Peter Beer, We all wish him the very best of luck for his 200th and hope that the "left footed legend" will go on for a few years yet .

Perso nality Par s 3 MILESTONES AT ORMOND Steven McCooke - 150 Games Congratulations to Steven M cCooke who playe d his 150th game for Ormond last week . After developing through Ormond's very fruitful Under 17 grade, Steven has become a very successful utility player for Ormond . He was a member of the 1985, 1987 and 1988 Premiership sides for Ormond and has been the winner of 2 Senior Best & Fairest awards for the club. Steven has also represented the VAFA on several occasions . Since overcoming a serious knee reconstruction some years ago Steven may have lost some of his pace but certainly has not lost any of his uncanny ball skills and ability to read the play to perfection . Steven's ball skills are not only restricted to football, as he has the daunting task of combining both District Cricket (where he was a member of Melbourne's Premiership side this season) and the top level of VAFA football . Such demands make it very hard on his time and it is a credit to himself that he is able to come back year after year to play both sports at such a high level and at such a high standard that he sets himself. His wife Debbie has also been most supportive to him . Well done "Cookie" from all at Ormond .

Paul Forsyth - 150 Game s Ormond's Paul Forsyth, plays his 150th game for the club today and is congratulated from all concerned at Ormond . Paul has developed into one of Ormond's most consistent and reliable players, and his ability to read the play is matched by none . A player not over endowed with pace, Paul has that uncanny ability of always appearing to have plenty of time to dispose of the ball . Paul also has the unbelievable record of having played in 7 premiership sides at Ormond including being in a premiership side for the last 5 years (1985, 1987 & 1988 Seniors and 1984 & 1986 Reserves) . This is quite a record on its own . Well done on your milestone today Paul and we all hope that you can add many more games to your record . "Fors" - you are the best! !

M ick Collins - 100 Games - Boundary Umpi re Congratulations to M ick Collins who this week officiates in his 100th game as Ormond's Reserve Grade boundary umpire. After playing several years of football for Ormond, M ick after realising his playing days were over was keen to give something back to the club and the game which had given him so much enjoyment . To his credit Mick has become one of the most well respected and honest boundary umpires in the VAFA . Mick has also stood in for M att Szylit as Ormond's senior boundary umpire on several occassions and also as a Reserve grade field umpire ; both positions he has filled most honourably .

Congratulations Mick all hope to see you throwing the ball back in for many more years to come .

STAN WHO? STAR! CASH!!

150 AT OLD TRINITY John Cash today plays his 50th game for Old Trinity. Cashy joined us back in 1984 and since then has established himself as perhaps the most "respected" seconds player in the amateur competition . Despite having the turning circle of a drunk draft horse and the kicking ability of a lame duck, Cashy has turned many games . . . mostly in favour of the opposition by kicking the wrong way!! All at Old Trinity wish him the very best for the rest of his career.

200 AT NORTH BRU N SWIC K Craig Fox reached the 200 game milestone against UHSOB on 22 .4 .89 .

Craig has risen through the ranks of youngster reserves grade, and now is an integral part of the North Brunswick seniors.

Craig has always actively involved himself in the cub and North Brunswick has benefitted from his endeavours .

Still a relative youngster, there are many good years left in Craig and we expect to see his strong marking and solid play around for quite a while yet .

Peter has been with the club for many years and if not for some serious injuries he has suffered along the way, could have played his 150th some years ago .

Peter epitomises the spirit of North Brunswick in that he keeps bouncing back . His skill and courage on the football field are admired by both his teammates and opponents alike, and his easy-going spirit off the field make him a popular figure at the club.
