A Section Football by Peter French

And so its Ormond and Old Xaverians again following Xavs . 19 point victory over Old Paradians in last week's Preliminary Final played on the windiest day I've ever experienced at Elsternwick Park .

Xavs . kicked to what had been the scoring end during the reserves game and Old Paradians supporters were right fully pleased as indeed was coach John O'Connell apart from two 50 metre penalties , with the sides effort and endeavour. Xavs. managed only one goal and led by just 3 points . They had good players in Dann, Callan & John McKay whilst McClements, Spillane & Paul Considine did well for Old Paradians .

As I left the O.P's quarter time huddle, Ormond's assistant coach Geoff Riley commented that "Xavs have some work to do now". Most would have agreed . Danny Corcoran told his side to attack and take chances but when Tony Peyton read the ball well of the pack to kick OP's Second, which put them in front for the first and only time for the game, Xavs, were really under pressure . However they responded magnificently. Rick Marks & David McKay lifted and Paul Curtain was an intelligent loose man in defence . The arrival of John Tiernan to the Xavs forward line announced a remarkable quarter by Xavs . in which they added 3 goals 6 behinds . Mick Atkins was now burning in the centre, Dann was doing as he liked and an inspirational tackle by Brennan which epitomised Xavs. play at this point should have resulted in a second Steve Curtain goal, but he missed from within range .

Xavs . were too quick and playing intelligently in the blustery and swirling wind . Old Paradians were breaking down across the half forward line and apart from Peter Wood & Brendan Considine seemed reluctant to work hard to pick up the Xavs . loose men . Xavs . by now had completed control across the centre and Meehan was getting on tip in the ruck which was allowing Beattie and Dann to run riot .

OP's may have received a "serve" at half time as they started the third quarter with far more purpose, but wasted golden opportunities to score. They were really struggling across the half forward line but their defence had worked overtime to restrict Xavs . to just one goal . When Paul Considine 'pulled one back' right on three quarter time OP's still trailed by four goals but were certainly not out of it .

Danny Corcoran Instructed Xavs to run in numbers, to keep the ball low into the wind, to attack and not to play safe by bottling it up on the defensive side . He urged them to believe in themselves and not to finish as losers .

Carless play by Meagher, who did a "Jimmy Stynes" allowed McClements to goal and when Beare marked strongly and added another "the game was on". Xavs. had obviously listened to instructions, they kept running, playing on, and when Beattie snapped truly at the fifteen minute mark to restore the lead to three goals, Old Paradians lost their way. They continued to win their share of the ball but erred in "bombing" it forward hoping for Beare or Grills to take the big marks . Greetham & John McKay, kept their heads and punched on all occasions, and with Marks, Brennan & Dan at the fall of the ball, Xavs were untroubled in clearing the ball away .

Overall Xavs . exposed a lack of pace in the Old Paradians side, won handsomely across the centre and were a degree more skilfull with hand and foot in the difficult conditions which never allowed for a 'great' game but did not prevent a competitive and interesting one . Commiserations to John O'Connell who in his first year is to be congratulated on having OP's finish as minor premiers and congratulations to Danny Corcoran who takes Old Xavs into successive A Section Grand Finals .

1988 GRAND FINA L Ormond will rightfully start favourite in Sunday's Grand Final which is a reverse of last season when Old Xaverians 40 point win in the second semi-final installed them as the side to beat . It is history now that Xavs . went down to Ormond who did it the hard way, via the Preliminary Final .

Certainly there will be Xav . players in action today who will always remember the frustration and acute disappointment that belongs to runners-up . Some will in fact be playing in their third successive Grand Final knowing the scoreline reads "runners-up" two, Premiers NIL". Being underdogs helps sometimes but when you get right down to it, the character of the players, the ability to handle the conditions on the day, the personal and team discipline and the mental and physical toughness are the qualities which will bring either Ormond or Old Xaverians the L .A . Adamson and Sherring Cups .

Looking at the line-ups Ormond has the edge down the spine . Their versatility at full back where Hille, Nash or David McDonald are all more than capable of coping with Steve Curtain whose lack of pace could be a liability. The Ormond trio, but especially Nash whose skills with hand and foot and use of the ball set up so many attacking moves, are quick, can all mark and are disciplined enough to knock the ball away under pressure .

If Ormond has the edge at fullback, Old Xavs . might just regain it at centre half forward where Grummet will worry Mark McDonald with his spring and height . Conditions did not suit him last week, yet he still poses a problem for McArthur-Allen, who is likely to instruct Mark McDonald to bring the ball to ground as much as possible. It would be foolish to write McDonald off as his latter half of the year and second semi-final effort have shown him to be the best centre half back in the competition . He reads the game well, is beautifully balanced and particularly mobile. In addition he can also play elsewhere in the goal to goal line.

If McDonald can keep Grummet quiet he will more than likely, be asked to contend with Geoff G re etham . Indeed it has been strongly rumoured that Grummet will be used to counter Carboon, freeing Greetham to play up forward . He is similar in style to McDonald, equally if not more experienced and like Carboon a long and accurate kick . I wonder therefore who will line up on whom .

In the pivot Russell has the very big task of coping with Mike Atkins who is in red hot form . Is there a better handballer in Amateur Football .? Maybe, but Atkins strength at the ball, constant encouragement, long kicking and strong tackling will set up many moves for his team and negate forays forward by his opponents . Russell will have to decide whether to play him close or to play his natural game where his strength and dash and ability to bob up with a goal at vital stages has lifted Ormond in past finals .

At centre half forward Ormond will be looking to alternate Carboon & Ross Tonkin a move which worked successfully a fortnight ago . Despite the rumours I believe Greetham will commence at centre half back . Although giving away inches he's played enough football to be a pretty useful contributor . At full back young John McKay will have the big task of holding Paul Schuhkraft who is back to top form .

The way Ormond feed the ball to Schuhkraft makes it hard for any fullback and McKay will need to be side by side if he is to spoil the Ormond spearhead . McKay will fare will in one out marking contests, as he is just as strong, surprisingly quick and reads the game so well for one who had had relatively little experience at senior level .

The clash between the on ball players of both sides is bound to provide a real highlight . Dan against Jobling, Meagher versus Cox, Taylor on Meehan . Who will Ormond play on Beattie? Craig Tonkin? I doubt it . Perhaps Gilmore, and if not, then Best may be asked to tag the exhuberant Old Xaverians No. 9.

Despite Dann's great game last week, in fact in both finals, Jobling is the player Old Xaverians must keep quiet .

Dann is not a tagger and Corcoran would waste his effectiveness if he uses him so. Richard Cu rt ain did a reasonable job on Frank Gleeson and he may get the mod . No matter who is assigned the role, Jobling's ability to run all day, make space, link up, and not waste possessions poses real problems for the Xavs . Taylor is fortunate that either Carboon or Ross Tonkin can give him a breather whereas 6Meehan has only Grummet & David McKay at a pinch . As Taylor can rest anywhere and make a real go of it as well, Xavs certainly lack Ormond's versatility in this department .

On the wings Kingston will beat either Paul Cu rtain or Callan and further contribute by kicking goals . Ge rvasoni showed his class in the second semi-final and will probably find Rick Marks as his opponent, leaving Peter Cu rtain to pick up the greatly improved Craig Tonkin . Ormond will depend on Barnes & Forsyth as they have all season to nullify the unknown, but highly regarded Taylor & Klvac may still be feeling the effects of last Sunday.

It all adds up to one hell of a final - great individual duels, fierce competition, and lets all pray its n ot windy!

My selection is Ormond . They have really been the form side all year and I still can't get over that memorable performance in the second semi .

Despite the fact that Old Xaverians have more at stake, in the sense of finishing second last year, Ormond's qualities of team and personal discipline combined with greater TEAM commitment, in addition to the individual brilliance that exists in the side will ensure the Club's 7th A Section Premiership .

Full credit to Kew who bounced back to win a spot in the 1988 B Grade Grad Final . In wet and blustery conditions Kew's inaccurate kicking nearly cost them the game .

In the first quarter Kew could only manager 1 .10 with the wind whereas Therry kicked 3 straight againยงt it .

The rest of the game was dominated by the defences and after a hard slog Kew finally came out on top . Kew's big men Schober & Peric, dominated as did Kalac on the wing . Matton, Flahe rty & Taylor all did well on the back line. There was a great sense of relief in the Kew rooms after the game.

So to my final preview, and the big game sees the Parkside & Kew clubs competing in both the Seniors and Rese rves. A great credit to both club administrations and players . It also shows the depth of players each club has and this will be very important in their quest for victory in A Grade .

Parkside after a week off have kept to normal training sessions in their grand final build up. Today they will have a full line up except for Freeman who has been suspended . Coach Bannister will be looking to Bradley or Mitchell to put up at full-forward . Both are good strong marks and will give Bruno or Griffiths a hard task at fullback. Yoksich is their only other injury worry will be fit and raring to go, he will be ably supported by Cowell who did a good job in the 2nd semi . I cant see Schober and Peric winning in these duels.

For Kew their only injury worry is Haralambopoulos, however the makeup of their team will be slightly different .

They have gone for a more experienced line up and the addition of Clayton will relieve some of the pressure off Burden . Burden - the big question is will he start in the centre this week? No doubt Vincentoria will tag him again but I think Burden will win this battle this time around, but he needs to be in the centre .

In the other key positions Cavanagh will be the most effective CFH . Buckhorn did a good job last Game and Cavanagh needs to pick up his game this week to make up for the last couple of weeks . Kew have been very inaccurate in their last couple of games which has been a weakness . If they can overcom this it may give them the edge. Franklin (P) will have an interesting duel on McAlister at fullforward but it won't have a great effect on the game.

Both teams have strong backlines and Parkside's was the more dominant in the second semi, although Jenkins ( K) & O'Kayli (K) both had improved games last week .

Again both teams have some inspirational players who can turn the game with a great mark or goal . Parkside have Williams, Sedgewick & Inserra, Kew - Kalac, Clayton, Haralambopoulos & Steve Lord . Kalac & Sturgess have both played some great games on the wing this year and their clash will be a beauty .

In terms of manning up these teams are similar and as I've always said its the one that gets the upper edge in the mind games that wins . Parkside are the bigger and stronger side and they will obviously try to psyche Kew out of the game early but Kew will be better prepared this time. The other problem that the Kew players have to overcome is relying so heavily on Burden - if each player goes out to be the instigator they will be very hard to beat . It will be a great first quarter, but I'm going for the Devils . Sorry Tom the poison pen will strike its last blow for the season !

Preview of game to be played September 17, 1988

Review of games played September 10, 1988 UNDER 19 SECTION 1 PRELIMINARY FINA L Old Xaverians advanced to the Grand Final as the result of their twenty three point victory over Marcellin last week . In review it appeared that the Xaverians were in commance of the game all day although by half way through the last quarter Marcellin had crept to within three points of the lead as they made a courageous comeback . Not to be denied Old Xaverians returned the ball to their forward line where a miracle mark by Peter Webb was followed by a spirit lifting goal . The Old Xaverians had then regained their poise and another goal by Webb put the issue beyond doubt .

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 GRAND FINA L Whitefriars won the F.H . Coldrey Cup by defeating Banyule by forty one points after a game in which each club's fortunes fluctuated . The Harry Trott Oval centre was heavy following rain which fell before the game and the heavy ball presented difficulties for all players . Robert Knight kicked Banyule's first goal and Whitefriars frittered away many opportunities before Bateman snapped truly, Ben Crowe quickly added another before Banyule took control of the ball and attacked late in the quarter for Donaldson twice and Hogan to goal before the quarter ended . Hogan added another early in the second quarter to prove Banyule were handling the conditions better and that they were making the most of their opportunities . It was well into the quarter before Bateman weaved his way through two packs to boot his second goal which lifted the drooping Whitefriars spirits . Banyule returned the ball to their forward line to see Rohan Hogan thread through another goal following a free kick wide out on the forward flank . Banyule went it at half time holding a twenty one point lead . After half time the wind strengthened and Whitefriars lifted their game as they were able to hold Banyule scoreless for the quarter while adding three goals in the last ten minutes of play to go to a two goal lead at the last change .

The last quarter was again dominated by Whitefriars as they were able to increase their lead to forty three points at the final siren . The long succession of pressure games had taken its toll of Banyule whose players appeared to tire as the game progressed . Halfway through the season Banyule lay eighth and relegation seemed a real threat . To their credit theylifted their game and won their last nine home and away games and two finals before failing in the Grand final . This was a worthy performance . Whitefriars must be congratulated on their great season . They were clearly the most talented side whose only defeat was by Banyule in Round 18. Both Clubs can be proud of their efforts and should appreach Section 1 in 1989 with confidence .

UNDER 19 SECTION 3 GRAND FINAL Old Paradians Purple defeated Old Brighton Grammarians by five points to win the M .G . Russell Premiership Cup after a hard fought game . The Paradians held the lead at each break by twelve, ten and twenty one points respectively so that during the last quarter Old Brighton nudged to within one kick of the lead . Captain Nick Mills booted the final Parade goal seventeen second into the last quarter so it can be seen that Old Brighton had most of the play in their forward line but were unable to wrest the lead from the determined Old Paradian players. The Paradians received great drive from ruckman Carlos Pimmenthal who twice in the third quarter burst through packs to boot long goals . He set up the play for Michael Kirwan to snap another. Other good contributions for the Paradians included Donoghue, Aanensen, Silby & Sideottom . Old Brighton were again served well by ruckman Stevenson, rover Styles and forward Allmand whose fur goals helped keep his team without touch of the Old Paradians score. The last Brighton goal scored well into the quarter came from a classic piece of play where Stevenson tapped to Styles whose pass found Templeton who goaled . these players had all played valiantly to bring victory to their side . Congratulations to Old Paradians on their Premiership and to Old Brighton for their competitive season .

UNDER 19 SECTION 1 GRAND FINAL De La Salle Blue & Old Xaverians play for the premiership pennant and the J .C . McCann Cup at Elsternwick park on Saturday morning . De La Salle enter the game justifiably as favourites having finished minor permiers by three clear matches and because they have defeated Old Xaverians twice during the season ; by thirty seven points on May 28 and by six points on August 13 . Today's game may well be decided by which side settles down the quicker to the atmosphere and the big ground . One point in favour of Old Xaverians is that man y of their players played here last season in the Grand Final in which the side snatched victory over Marcellin in a thrilling last quarter comeback . Old Xaverians have Best and Fairest winner George Gorozides & Connors as reliable avenues to goal . In addition Hemmings has starred twice against De La Salle as has Quilty while Wilson & Dalton have done well against De La Salle and in last week's final . Other Old Xaverians capable of giving drive to their side include last week's stars Michael Klvac, Robert Visintini & Damian Stoney. Given his influence last Saturday the De La Salle defenders must keep a close check on Webb or he could again become the matchwinner. What of De La Salle? Walker, their leading goalkicker, was restricted in the second semi final so today he could prove a threat to Old Xaverians as he did in the May 28 game when he kicked four goals. Malizia kicked four of De La's four goals on August 13 so he will need to be kept in check . I expect the Assumption College graduate Nick Eastman to give De La Salle a lot of drive as he did in the semi final and against Old Xaverians on May 28. Other De La Salle players who come under notice include Ronchi, Kruger, Higgins and that ubiquitous V.A .F.A . name carrier O'Callaghan . It will be a virtual impossibility for Old Xaverians to blanket all these players for the whole game so I expect that come 11 .30 Damian Toohey will be holding the J.S . McCann Cup to signify De La Salle have won that prestigious trophy for the first time .

1988 - A VERY GOOD YEAR The V.A .FA. overall can be well satisfied with Season 1988 . Many months of pre-season work went into the planning and implementation of a soundly based marketing program . The V.A.F.A . Ormond's B est Ever Post-War Tea m

BY NOEL RUNDL E Today Ormond hope that some new stars will shine in the firmament with such dazzling brilliance that they could perhaps find a place in the constellation of players judged to be the best ever post-war team . Then again will the three present day players in the side, Phillip Kingston, Steven McCooke and Russell Barnes perform to the position of renown voted to them? The team was announced on the Saturday night after Ormond had lost to North Old Boys . The spirit of controversy and criticism as the night lengthened made this Past and Present players dinner memorable.

Some weeks prior to the night a panel of old, olders and very old Ormond identities were selected as judges .

Some with great football reputations untarnished by time, some whose reputations had grown with time, and one or two whose football ability was unknown . The panel selected about five players for each position, and then ultimately selected the team in the prior week .

I think that the selectors showed skill but could have done better. A competition was held to pick the team your entry won two points if you named a player in his selected position, and only one point if you named the player in the team but not in the selected position . The possible score was 36 - the winning entry score 27 points, and my entry scored 24 points to come fourth in the competition .

I was interested to dine with the selection panel, the discussion was fairly spirited, and as a consequence I offer a couple of recommendations to any Clubs that contemplate such a selection .

First of all, select a possible panel of judges, then prepare about 25 questions on players and the Club and test their memories! Dinner that night, and this was early, made me realise that some of the panel had hazy memories, and their chronology was faulty . The result of the quiz should help pick an informed panel .

Secondly, after the quiz, further cull the panel to avoid conflicts or suspicions of self-interst, retiring modesty, or nepotism . And thirdly, make sure the gound rules are well established and tested in debate as to their fairness .

This was highlighted by two examples - Brian Walsh, who played for two seasons, 1954 and 1955, and was second only in that decade to Ormond's greatest ever footballer, Laurie Mithen, 1953 centreman, Section Best and Fairest, and later Melbourne's premiership centreman, was nominated in the back pocket panel but then not considered for that position because he did not play enough games in that position! Brian, later a great back pocket player in good St . Kilda teams, was penalised for his brilliance which found him playing centre, wing, half back, and even on occasion at centre-half forward . Havel Rowe, 'A' Section Best and Fairest in 1947, in Me centre, won a Richmond Best and Fairest on the wing, and in the centre, was nominated for the wing, and then rejectcd hecause he did not play enough games on the wing !

My playing experience with nrmond was from 1950 to 1955, a period in which Ormond won a 'A' Section premiership in 1950 and was in the sinals from 1951 to 1955 . The team did not make the finals again until 1963.

I did not see many games between 195ÂŽ 3nd 1970 .

The panel's memory was in error in nominating Ron ( `Hookey') Trevorrow (Neil Roberts always states that 'Hookey' is the best player he's ever seen not to play League football - 'Hookey' was a playboy and loved life and the game) only at CHF where he played for theClub and State in 1g53 . In 1954 and 1955 'Hookey' played at CHB for the Club and Victoria and won the Club Best and Fairest in tr, .t position . Old Melburnian players and supporters of that Club in the era when it won three successvie 'A' Sec ;ion flags in 1953, 1954, 1955, will remember Hockey's brilliance.

Similarly Ormond's greatest son since 1970, Bruce Bourne, All-Australian player, wae nominated only at CHF. whereas he won his 'A' Section Best and Fairest in 1974 at CHB, and considers that he played his best football in that position . It was an absolute travesty not to nominate Bruce both at CHB and as a ruck rover .

Research suggests that Lou Rols only ever coached one other VAFA Club, and that was Old Scotch in 1934 for the year only, and won an 'A' Section flag in that year.

The Polwarth Cup is awarded annually by the Executive to the Under-19 team which is best performed during the first round . **,t* OTF discovered with interest last weekend that back in 1964 a combined A Section team took on and defeated a team selected from B,C,D&E Sections. The game was played at Harry Trott on Queens birthday and featured some very intersting names including from 'A' Alan Doble (Ormond), Graham Mansfield (O.Parads) whose son Lloyd was a member of OPs team which went down last week, Des Meagher (Old Xavs) later to make a name for himself at Hawthorn, Peter Scanton (Coburg), now a VFL Commissioner and from 'The Rest' Mike Blood ( St Kevins) to Hawthorn, David Hughes ( Old Scotch), now a member of the VAFA's Independent Tribunal, Mike Perry (Old Scotch), member of the Richmond's 1967 Premiership side and later Coach of Power House and Old Geelong, Ray Wilson who captaiend Blacks to the B Section flag in 1964 and then A the following season before departing for Hawthorn .

Noel will receive a Presentation during the Old Haileybu ry Grand Final breakfast at the Dorchester next Saturday, September 24th . MAYORS' WALK commences at 8 .30 am, and walkers travel south along the service road to Anzac Avenue, where they will be directed to the footpath for the stroll past the Shrine . A left turn at Domain Road, and walkers soon reach the Royal Botanic Gardens, entering at Gate D . A superb 2 .9 km walk through Melbourne's magnificent gardens leads to Linlithgow Avenue and the Alexandra Gardens .

Travelling west under St Kilda Road, walkers circle the Arts Centre, via Sturt and Nolan Streets, then return to St Kilda Road to finish under the Arts Centre spire.

KIDS' RU N has the same start and finish points as the Mayors' Walk . The UNDER 13 section commences at 9 .00 am, travels to Government House Drive, then follows the Tan Track north to Alexandra Avenue to link up with the Mayors' Walk loop around the Arts Centre. Kids AGED 13-17 start at 9.15 am, and join the Tan Track at Birdwood Avenue for a left turn at Anderson Street . Another left turn at Alexandra Avenue takes runners through to the St Kilda Road underpass for the loop around the Arts Centre.

WAYNE BANNISTER ( PARKSIDE) Wayne commenced senior football with Coilingwood YCW before moving onto Collingwood as under-19 captain .

After a stint with the Magpie Reserves he transferred to South Morang and then returned to coach Collingwood Districts . He was appointed Coach of Alphington and had instant success bringing them back to back pennants in D (1980) and C (1981) . He left the V.A.F.A . for the Diamond Valley again and coached Northcote Parks to a Premiership in 1983. 1988 sees him back in the VA .F.A . with Parkside and in response to my question of why Parkside would win said , "we've worked hard all year and a lot of these players have been trying to win a flag for four or five years now The Club too has been waiting 50 years for A Section and this flag . Although I favour the promotion system, my way of coaching is to win and not look for the reward that promotion brings . I was happy with the way we played in the second semi .

We know it'll be hard and Kew will be "up" again after last Saturday's win but if we keep the pressure on particularly tackling then we'll go close. " BRETT BURDEN (KEW) Brett commenced senior football with Kew in 1977 and continued as a player until 1983 during which time he played in the Club's team which finished runner-up to BulleenTemplestowe in B Section . In 1984 he moved to Yarrawonga, the home town of his wife to be and in 1985 was appointed Junior Development Officer of the Queensland Australian Football League . He played two seasons for Mayne, won interstate selection and returned to Kew as Senior Coach in 1987 . He met with success by taking the Club back to B Section and has followed it up by coaching the team into successive Grand finals . 1988 has been a big year for Brett as he won ALL Australian selection as well as the Geoff Moore Medal as the best and fairest player in the section . His thoughts on today's grand final are as follows : "We'll have to play at our best to win as they've proved they're a good side which has been underrated during the year by you, Loretta and others . Grand Finals are on the day and hopefully it'll be our day " The Club was at the crossroads mid season and its a great credit to the younger and new players that we are where we are and I think its that sort of attitude that will get them up. "

DANNY CORCORAN (OLD XAVERIANS ) Danny began his football career with Garfield in country Victoria and played with Hawthorn reserves on match permits in 1973, 74 and 75 . He then had a couple of years away from the game during which he came down to Melbourne to University . There he met Tim O'Shaughnessy who with brother Kevin convinced him to play for Old Xaverians which he did in 1979. Old Xavs. bowing out in that B Section Preliminary Final to Marcellin, thanks to Tony Aloisio goal seconds from time .

In 1980 and 1981 he was a member of the Old Xaverians B and A Section Premiership teams coached by Michael Greene . He was appointed Captain in 1982, finished runner-up in the Woodrow Medal to Tom Mason (Old Scotch) and won selection in the Victorian team in that defeated the Combined Services .

Vice-captain in 1983 and 1984 when he again won Victorian selection and performed well in the Laurie Aghan coached team that defeated the V.C.F.L . in Bendigo. In 1984, 85 and 86 he was running and weights coach at Footscray and returned to coach the Old Xaverians in 1987 . In both season the Club has reached the Grand Final and his response to my question was : "I'm just glad to be in there again with a chance for the flag. Success for Old Xaverians on Sunday depends on how much they want it. Their character and in some instances football career is on the line.

MIKE McARTHUR-ALLEN (ORMOND) Mike began his football with South Warrnambool under 18s in 1964 and then moved to Melbourne and played for Camberwell under-19s in the VFA . From 1966 to 1969 he played Amateur Football firstly for St . Pats (Ballarat) Old Collegians before going to Ormond in 1969 . In 1970 he joined Bulleen-United and was appointed captain coach in 1972 . In 1978 Mike successfully applied for the coaching job at Canturbury-North Balwyn in the E .S .C.FA., remaining there for fur years and in 1983 he was appointed senior coach at Ormond and has been the encumbent since then . His coaching record shows two flags (both at Ormond) and two runners-up . In 13 years of coaching, Clubs he has coached, have made the finals on 10 occasions .

His comments on whi Ormond could win back to back flags were short and to the point : "I think we'll win because we've a better spread of talent particularly around the edges . I also believe that Ormond players have a better record when it comes to winning the harder contests."

BI G GAME TODAY? MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT - UMPIRES ASSOCIATIO N On behalf of all umpires I would like to express a vote of thanks to those Clubs and Officials who have gone out of their way each week to make sure the umpires are well looked after . Limited space does not allow me to name them all but to those people who make sure that changing rooms are clean, look after us with drinks during intervals and welcome us into the rooms after the match (win, lose or draw), we thak you all sincerely .

To those players considering hanging up the black boots - you might take up the challenge to paint them white and join a great bunch of guys in the VAFA Umpires Association . You'll never regret taking the step .

Wayne Henry President It was with much regret that we saw an old 'Stager' go down last week, when Peter Wiseman fell into a pot-hole at Elsternwick Park . Many thanks to Frank Coghlan, the trainer from Old Paradians, who ably assisted Peter with his badly swollen ankle . What a way to finish the year!

Some umpires get nervous before games and do weird things, but how weird is it when you sleep in your full gear so you don't get to the game late. It seems Andrew Mullaly thought this one up on his own .

One for the activists amongst us . Sharon Alger did her first Grand Final last week - is it the first for the VAFA? The short story about the doings of Glen Clark could probably be called the Toohey Tapes!! !

100 GAMES U P Congratulations this week go to Mark Serong doing his 100th in the goals, after starting his career in 1984 at the very early age of 16 . His biggest thrill to date was his trip to Launceston with the State team and reckons that Kevin Barker, being his biggest influence, was the man behind his success . Mark loves food and beer and is not keen on lazy boundary umpires and Sunday morning . His favourite umpires are Mike Murray and Ron "How Long" Lippold (what a crawler!) . His ambition is to be the best goalie and we all think he is well on the his way . Good luck today Mark on your Ton. With this the last for the year, we have taken the opportunity to thank David Levens, Graeme Simpson and Kevin Barker, our advisors, for all the work they have put into the training of all the umpires. It is a thankless task but you only have to be at the finals to check on the standard of our umpires and know that they achieved quite a!ot . Umpiring can only benefit from having people like this around and we all hope the VAFA'does the right thing and appoints them all again next year. Well done fellers.

The year has been a long one football-wise, but indeed a pleasurable one for us both ( Ron & Mike) . To all those people who have contributed in any way to our column we thank you . (Even those that didn't know they were contributing!) We even went a full season without being edited out ; plus as much space as we needed . It'll be a big year for umpiring next year, we hope the team we had this year will be a part of it . Till then, keep fit and come back bouncing!

EXTRA TIME - RESERVE FINAL MATCHES Extra time will be played in Reserve Grade Final where scores are level at the end of scheduled time .

In Reserve Grand Finals in 1988, matches will start quarter of an hour earlier than they have been gazetted in the past and "in the event of the scoreboard showing a draw when the siren sounds the players will remain on the field, change ends and whilst that is happening the goal umpires will meet and confirm that it actually is a draw. Once confirmation is received 5 minutes plus time on will be played after which the siren will sounded .

The teams will cross straight over (without an address from the coach) and play another 5 minutes plus time on . Whoever is in front at this stage will be deemed the winner. In the unlikely event of the scores still being level the match will be declared a draw and replayed the following week " Extra time will NOT be played in Senior or Under-19 matches .

5 YEARS AGO - 198 3 De La outlasted University Blues, to win the 'A' Section flag, its fourth in six years, with the last three victories against the Blues.

Blues led by a point at the last change, after a great third term recovery but were no match for De La in the final term with De La kicking 5.1 to 1 .3 Harrington, Connolly, Hollier, Greene, R . and G . McHen ry (De La) and Angel, Yeo, Jennings, Jackson, R . Curnow, O'Brien (Uni Blues) were best .

Bulleen/Templestowe led by 6 goals at three-quarter time in the 'B' Section Grand Final against Kew, then Kew, who played poorly all day, slammed on 5 goals in 11 minutes to get within 5 points, and then its next shot hit the post, and this misfortune seemed to take some of the sting out of the side . Bulleen/Templestowe then went away to win by 17 points . Best were Delanty, Bird, Delaney, Farley, Pace, Palmer (Bulleen/Temp) and Hayes, Burden, Smith, Anderson, Jackomes, Blay (Kew) .

Parade's winning margin was 75 points, and their win gave them their and their sixth in seven years . Quinlan, Galloway (4 goals), Williams were best for Parade. by 2 goals, and also the 'B' reserve and junior .

Ormond had a big year, winning the 'B' Section flag against Monash 25 YEARS AGO - 196 3 . Three goals with ten Collegians won their second successive 'A' Section premiership in shocking conditions defenders stood but Collegians' position looked hopeless, then they got two goals minutes to go, Old Scotch's in the second semi, went to Blacks beaten by Uni Old Paradians, .6 to 8 .6. firm and they won by a goal, 9 half time . Parade again a 6-goal lead in the first quarter only to see Blacks come back and lead narrowly at .13 to 15.14. De La Salle took a good lead in the third term and maintained their advantage until the finish,in 21the last quarter to take out went to an early lead in 'C' and then withstood a strong challenge by Parkside the flag, 6.12 to 5 .8.

60 YEARS AGO - 192 8 The season started on April 28th with 26 Clubs, and it's worth listing them . Black Rock, Brightonvale, Brunswick, Burwood, Collegians, Elsternwick, Flinders Naval Depot, Geelong, Glenhuntly, Kingsville, Murrumbeena, Oakleigh, Caulfield Grammarians, Old HaileyburyTrinity, Old Melburnians, Old Scotch, Old Xaverians, Pascoe Vale, Sandringham, South Caulfield, State Savings Bank, St . Pauls Ascot Vale, Sur rey Hills, Teachers' College A and B, University A and B and West Hawthorn .

Only nine survice - a tribute to their energetic and devoted administrators over the years .

at centre forward . There was much dispute regarding the exact meaning of central but it was decided that Old Melburnians had broken the rule and it was decided by a majority rule to award the game to St Pauls.

A long kicking contest was held and T.H . Cleland ( Sth Caulfield) won all three sections drop, 71 y 2 .0, put 75 y. place 72 y. 1 .6 A Section Best and Fairest was won by G . Cassidy (Old Caulfield Gr), W. Vickers, G . Law and C. Fergie, all from Old Scotch, who tied for second place.

University B and Old Melburnians met to decide the A Section flag . University B, premiers in 1921 and 1922, were confident having beaten OMs twice during the season while OMs, with the confidence some say they are still known for, had booked the Britannia Hotel (cnr Queen and Bourke Sts) for their end of season dinner on Grand Final night . The OMs were yet to win a premiership . University had champion forward, Jack Gre en, 112 goals to date, in front - "a brilliant high mark, played good position and is an extremely accurate kick", later a top player for Hawthorn, and even later still a football commentator on 3KZ with the late Norman Banks.

The Premiership went to University B . Old Melburnians won their first premiershp in 1930 .

The fact that the secretary of the Club, Mac Tolliday was also in the Personnel Department at the bank, and is alleged to have transferred all good country players to Melbourne, may have contributed to their success . The Club also had a very high profile as one of its founders, Bob Scott, was VAFA Press Correspondent for The Sun, Herald, Sporting Globe and made sure the Bank got plenty of publicity .
