FINAL FOUR SETTLE D irtue of its 2 point win over section leaders Ormond Marcellin cemented its place in the four and will no w ;- eet Old Xaverians in the first Semi Final on Sunday week .

Marcellin surprised Ormond with its tenacity and only some inaccuracy forward work in the first half prevented ,em from building up a sizeable lead . Nonetheless a 28 point margin at 3/a time was a useful challenge fo r 'Monds and one predictably that they threw everything into . Four goals to nil and a lift by players down the majority of the day nearly got them home. However in the end it didn't and full credit to Marcellin o n ne performance. O'Flynn, Callinan, Luke Getson & Murray were a wonderful defence whilst Petroff & Lennox worked hard up forard . Ormond's form has some of its supporters very worried . Concern might be •,,:e better work for the selection committee who've now seen the side suffer two narrow losses and record one arrow win in the past three weeks. l-,day at Bundoora they meet Old Paradians in what will be a dress rehearsal for the second semi final . Old paradians have a slightly better record of late and are nearly back to full strength . They will not have forgotten at awful thrashing at Ormond back in May and will be eager to establish supremacy with the finals so close. ~. strength of the O .P's is recent weeks has been its defence where Matt Considine, Mansfield, the brothers Wood, Conavant the versatile Pritchard if required, are a pretty close knit group . However Ormond too has solid defence, indeed it has had the lowest score kicked against it for the year . Best, the McDonald brothers , 41e, Forsyth & Barnes team admirably and my tip to Bruce Corben and company is to return the skipper ;,ermanently to half back where his ability to organise the defence and where he can lead from the front are ~ rnestimable value. If Mark McDonald receives "a rest" then Ross Tonkin may be the man for centre half oack. The centre lines of both sides are fairly even . Abrahams duel with Russell will be a beauty and Kingston & Gilmore will receive plenty of opposition from Beare and either Philip or Nelson .

Tiiere is an abundance of talent u forward in both sides but McClements & Grills have the edge over Taylor & McMahon in the ruck .

O.P.'s need a pre-carnival game from skipper Gleeson & Spillane also is overdue. I believe OP's will win . They've more options and wilo not have the form doubts which may have cropped up in some Ormond minds and may ee more anxious to stake their claim than the visitors. Of course the other vitals games involve No rt h O.B., Old Scotch & De La Salle O.C. One of this trio will accompany St . Bernards to B Section . The most likely -andidate is De La Salle O.C. They are bound to put up one hell of an effort but they simply lack the class r=nd skill of Old Xaverians who must be delighted with the form of one of its favourite sons, Steve Cu rtain . :-lis first senior game last week saw him boot 8 goals from the spearhead and I'll be surprised if he can't repeat that effort today. De La have been a wonderful 'A' Section club since arriving in 1976 . They have missed the ripal four only once in those 13 years and in that time played in seven Grand Finals winning five . A marvellous performance, but alas its all past history and although the return to 'B' section is not the end of the world, the notential and performance of their two Under 19 teams and Reserves suggests we may see them back in the oig time in 1990.

Thus Old Scotch will be saved from relegation by the efforts of its co-tenants Old Xaverians, as depite a fighting 2 point win last week I believe that Collegians will want to finish 1988 in winning style and their running game will be too much for the Cardinals. What a duel Schober v Fuller promises to be !

Now that they're assured of their second appearance in A Section final series Marcellin will get the North O .B . money of its back with a victory this afternoon that will also provide Neil Le Lievre with the chance to settle a few doubts over positioning and form, and finally whether the Blues are required to make the journey to West Essendon will be decided by His Honour Judge Vincent . Should the match be played Blues will win, but only f they play with the same spirit and commitment shown in the past fortnight .

Old Haileybu ry & Old Brighton have met on 22 occasions . Old Brighton has won 15 and strangely this will be their first meeting in a Final . *~* Bulleen United & Old Mentonians have never met in a final and on the nine meetings to dare, O . Mentonians lead by 3 .

Preston Marist Brothers & Hampton Rovers meet for the first time this season with Preston successful on both occasions . ~t*~t Aquinas & Whitefriars have met in two finals (1987 second Semi and Grand Final) Aquinas won the big one and since joining the VAFA Aquinas have won 4 and Whitefriars 2 .

Old Essendon & Powerhouse have never met in final and in their overall contests the 'Dons lead 3 to 1 . **i~ La Trobe & Old Ca re y will also be competing in their first final and during the year each recorded a win .

Doveton & St . Andrews met in the first semi last season with victory going to the Saints . All told the clubs have met 4 times and each has recorded 2 wins .

** * 200th GAMES FOR AMATEUR LEGEND One of the Greatest Amateur Footballers ever to pull on a boot, Roger Paul, plays his 200th game for Old Haileybu ry today. "Paully" won the first two of an amazing six Best & Fairests in his first two years out of school, way back in 1975-75 . Until 1980 he was one of the most destructive players arund, using his strength to great advantage in the centre and demolishing countless collarbones with the most feared hip and shoulder in the competition . This ability to burst open a pack and emerge with the ball was a major force behind the Bloods' climb to 'B' Grade in the late 1970s, along with the talents of his great contemporary and All-Australian ruckman, John Houghton . In those days it was almost a case of Paul and Houghton firing to make a Haileybury win on meritability - the two tied for Roger's third Best & Fairest in 1978 .

A knee injury then saw changes to Roger's career.

He actually retired in 1984, only to be coerced into playing again the next season by Andy LangfordJones who else!) . Playing as the senior pro, having been captain himself for six years from 1977 to 1982, he was still good enough to win the 1983, 1985 and 1986 Best and Fairests as well as captain the VAFA 'CDEFG' teams to impressive victories in 1986-87.

Although slower he was sure in touch, so familiar and

at home with the heat of football battle, and an absolute inspiration to the young talent such as Garry Phillips and John Bingham that has emerged over the last couple of years . He led off the field too, as (playing) President from 1985 to 1987 .

Neither Roger or his enthusiastic father Arch could eer be described as umpire lovers - when 'Paully' himself took the whistle for a reserves game there were less than a dozen free kicks for the game!

Socially train trips and a memorable visit to the Moonee Valley trots were rare weaknesses, but Rog and the lovely Bron have always been one of the club's favourite couples .

It's been a long road to 200 for the greatest player seen at Old Haileybury - and Paully's done it all from President to Life Member to Captain to Best & Fairest winner. Along the way he has been Amateur football's most valuable ornaments. It's also fitting that he joins two of hbis closest team mates over many years, Neville Schmidt and John Corrigan, in the "200 Club" .

In the other two matches which really don't count for much on the ladder, there will be intensive pressure because of the teams competing . A little more depth should see them go on .

Sturgess (Centre ) FAWKNER - The woes continue for them other problems have not helped their cause . This year they did not recruit enough new players and injuries and require a lot of work around the club for next year .have gallen away in teh second half of the season and will . They B&F: BUSST (Ruck), Adan Saggers ( CHF/CHB) .

CAULFIELD - Definitely shows. The loss of Kanis the biggest mystery in B grade this year . On paper a much better side than their positions obviously meant more than they realised and since they have won every game Cooney and Berzins have returned . This crowd should definitely be swabbed - the B&F: FISH (Ruck), Stevenson 'Ark has nothing on this lot (Rover), McClelland (BP) . .

TRINITY - A very unsettling year for them losing the coach . New coach and a new ground, then problems off the ground by B&F: NORMAN .(Centre), Basically Black they are still in C grade mode and if they survive they will need to work much harder (RR) .

IVANHOE - A virtual walkout pre-season losing 14 senior players sealed their fate other problems with their administration unsettled the club badly . Losing the coach and the grade . Unless there is a big shake-up there will be B&F : CASTAGNINE (Rover), M' . Flynn, S . Corlett.

KEW - B&F : BURDEN (Centre , Jenkins ( PARKSIDE HBF), Duncan (Rover) B&F: WILLIAMS ( RR), ~age THERRY B&F : MATTON ( RR), Taylor (Centre), Sturgess (HBF) ( BULLEEN/TEMP - B&F: SMYTHE CHB), Nyman (Centre), George (Rover), Harisiou 4 (Ruck) .

Before looking at today's big games we should perhaps pause to remember those who have fallen, two of course from the section completely . Looking at the scoreboard it would seem that Thomastown have only themselves to blame, virtually kicking themselves out of "C" Grade after losing to Old Ivanhoe by a point despite having nine more scoring shots . They'll still be kicking themselves next year. Balaclava also won convincingly to make sure that Melbourne High's final memories of the section are unhappy ones .

Turning from relegation to finals, the Saintly mid-fielders enjoyed contrasting days against today's second semifinal teams . St Kilda CBC's efforts over the season were reminiscent of many a politician - promising much but delivering little. St Kevins also finished with an even split of wins and losses, but it's a wonder they didn't fall asleep half-way through so predictable did their season become .

At Sandringham today, Old Haileyburians and Old Brighton meet each other for the first time ever in a finals match, which is something of a surprise . Conditions may well be similar to those at Elsternwick Park last week, where Brighton gave the Bloods more than a surprise and saw them into the finals with two consecutive losses (which could almost have been three had not Melbourne High failed by only two points the week before) .

There was a marked contrast in the two team's attitudes last week . Brighton had only Peter Grant and Matt Allen out (both injured) and treated the game as serious practice for this week's semi ; even to the extent of the ubiquitous ghetto-blaster in the rooms . Haileybury preferred the picnic-in-absentia preparation . VAFA State wingman Garry Phillips got some exercise by umpiring the reserves match, but it was more like a slumber party for Messrs Shand, Walden, Holohan, Graham Smith, and Seccull, all of whom were rested or resting (whatever your preference) . At least Roger Paul returned to the fray.

The Bloods have far greater marking strength, especially up forward with Bingham, Shand and Wilson . Against this Brighton have many dangerous runners, of whom Andrew Grant is perhaps the most prolific. Pryor's pace will allow him to elude any defender. Waddingham showed off his skills with three great left-foot snaps in the space of a match winning quarter last week, and Barber's was another useful, elasive contribution . McKennan, the poor man's Robert Flower, has been a valuable winger for many years too . Paul Woff may receive less assistance than his counterparts but has the strength and mobility to dominate a game all day. Dave Cochrane and skipper Cam Lade provide strength in medium-sized packages while coach Mark Sarau will be on field to direct operations - which may or may not be an advantage over Phil Stevens.

I suppose the real question being asked is whether Haileybury can settle quickly back into a smooth combination when half a dozen changes have been made from the previous week . Will the rest and recreation program work, or will it backfire? I think the former, but if Brighton can get out of the blocks quickly while the Old Haileyburians are trying to remember each other's names, the story could be drastically different .

Like Old Haileyburians, Banyule enter the finals series after two straight losses. In fact Old Melburnians snatched the minor premiership at the very last opportunity by virtue of the Bears' latest stumble . The loss of wingmen Brendan Moloney and Quilliam through suspension is an added blow to morale in a season that was unblemished until round 14 but has since seen three losses in the last five games .

Elsternwick Park's wide wings will suit both sides, particularly the running players who made up a third of the VAFA 'CDEFG' team in Adelaide . OM's pair of Greg Bradshaw and Jeremy Nicholls may do more around the ground than the Banyule quartest - Fraumano, Sutterby, Adams and Holt - who like the goals a little more. Bradshaw and Holt are the two biggest kick-winners and may cancel out each other's efforts, but even more important will be the rucking contest between Rohan B rown (OMs) and Dave Williams (B) . At least Ed Cordner can provide a little assistance to Brown, but Williams is really alone . The loser's rovers my well go unfed .

In the leadership stakes Andrew Witts has been outstanding all year, but with players of the character of that well-known non-conformist Marcus Fraumano around, Banyule will also have plenty of direction . At this stage of the season, however, OMs just seem to be on the roll while Banyule could not have picked a worse time to be off the boil . I think the Grammarians will win teh first berth to "B" Grade by winning today - even though Banyule won both home and away clashes (by less than a goal each time) .

PRESTON MBOB MILESTONE GALORE Preston this week have a variety of players reaching personal milestones. Playing their 50th games are Danny `Showbag' Kiervan & Craig McGraw.

Showy is last years B & F winner and is still going along in fine fashion . Craig is playing wel at the right end of the season, when it counts .

We also have two players, playing their 100th games, which are young Scott ` Wordy' McGowan & Andrew'Pickles' Finikaridis. Scott is probably one of the more educated young men from Preston and sometimes uses words that go above most players head . Pickles is one of the real personalities of the club and always provides some entertainment around the place.

Finally there is Ivan De Bono playing his 150th game .

Ivan is also a past B & F winner, a great clubman and always gives his very best on and off the field .

50 GAMES TO BULLEEN UNITED Congratulations to Mick Davey on his belated milestone for the Bulls . It has taken 'Mental' quite a while to notch this many because he is always finding something else to occupy his mind, but when he plays football he is as disciplined a player as any . Always a barrel of laughs, it has been great playing with Mental . Well done Mick, and try to make the nest 50 a bit quicker.

50 GAMES TO BRENNIE `HAMO' HAMBRIDGE Congratulations to B rennie Hambrid ge on playing his 50th game today for St . Bedes. When Brennie arrived at the Club he presented a baby faced, shy and very humble appearance. However, it did not take us long to realise this was a facade . Nowadays Brennie's mouth gets him into heaps of trouble with fellow team mates . The highlight of training is the regular use of Brennie, in lieu of the bag, for the punching bag routine. All the boys reckon this exercise is just 'bewdiful'. Despite all his shortcomings (and there are many) Brennie has been a great acquisition to St . Bedes and we all wish him well on his 50th .

OLD CAREY Winner of our End of Season Award of Dinner for two at Fergy's Restaurant Linda Crescent is JOHN HAND S Congratulations John from all at Old Carey. Apart from holding court on our forward line and kicking the odd miraculous goal, John has een a tower of strength around the club, ranging from cleaner, storeman, barman, runner, host and organiser.

u F,nals time is here and this grade has turned out very even between the top four sides. Hampton Rovers & Preston have the privilege of the double chance, while Old Mentonians must be smarting at losing second ;,osition . As fate has it, the same four sides play today as last week, the difference being, one side will drop out and the other will be promoted to C Grade. Most people will agree that on the years performances Preston :1;1I start slight favourites for the flag, but there is little difference between them .

Taday Hampton Rovers play P reston in the second semi at Harry Trott Oval . Both sides play a similar style of game, fast play on footy, strong marking and both look for their full forward . Alf Panagiotidis (HR) steady all year must convert every opportunity, his opponent being Pat McVeigh a hard working and tight player. At he other end Preston has Ga ry Phillips, impressive last week, showing strong marking skills and leads well .

Phillips must be held, and my choice would be Wylie, Austin, a player the Rovers have relied on for many ears . For the Rovers to win Alan Lawson must fire at centre half forward . This would bring other players into he game. Last week P re ston were able to upset the Rovers forwards led by Peter Yendell & Emile Kyracou .

3all possession in the centre will be utmost important . Wayne Capp & Mark Young (HR) must get first use, not, Mark Mason ( P reston) will tear them apart as witnessed by myself last week .

Finally who will win, P re ston have had the edge in both encounters by a small margin, but with dry conditions and the incentive of C Grade I believe Hampton Rovers can win a close and exciting contest .

The first semi sees Old Mentonians play Bulleen United . These two sides have had a very successful second ,alf of the season . Bulleen have now registered nine wins on the trot and well deserve a shot at C Grade . I celieve both sides will include new players today to strengthen then forward lines . Old Mentonians will naturally onng in No rt on to bolster their rucks with Sly and improve their marking ability around the ground . This could develop into a battle of the back lines. OM's led by Colin Funston & Dean Rogers and Bulleen will rely on strong checking Paul Flew & Steve Adams . The centre duels and roving positions hold the key to the game .

OM's has Ross Newman (centre) with Russ & Nick Macqui re firing at the right time. Bulleen will encounte r th ever reliable Johm Empey and rovers Gary Taylor & Mark Kelly. Winger Chris Foley will need to be ;vatched as he's had a great season . Neither side relies on a ful forward, so whoever adjust to the big windy spaces of Coburgs ground will take the points. Again very hard to select, Nothing between them - Bulleen to win !

E Section Report by John Palme r

My predictions were thrown right out the window last week . Tipped only one winner - missed on 4th spot and missed on 9th spot - not a very good way to go into the finals . The only thing to look forward to today is that I wont make the same number of mistakes - (maximum 2 only possible) .

Old Essendon looked like going under to Brunswick at half time last week but in a good finals lead-up contest, came back to run out 13 point winners .

Like me, they would have thought a win would have kept them in E Section next year - and win they did . have immediately gone flat . Heathe rt on got up by 1 point, they stay in the Section and the High School Old Boys go to F Section with the Pirates . I have some sympathy for the St . Bedes followers - this is the 5th game where the margin has been 3 points or less, including 2 draws . In one other game they were beaten by 10 points . With that tally of close games, lady luck certainly hasn't been on their side this year.

Powerhouse regained its earlier season good form with a 3 goal victory over Old Geelong . The win has secured them a finals berth and restored their confidence .

To todays games and the do or die 1st semi-final at Ransford Oval . Old Essendon & Powerhouse . They met two weeks ago and O .E . won by 5 goals. (First time around O .E . won by about 6 majors) . Their performances have in my view, been a little stronger than those of POwerhouse of late and my nod for a prelim . final berth goes to Old Essendon .

The 2nd semi-final - a repeat of last weeks encoutern Whitefriars & Aquinas . The score is one each for the year and after their confidence boosting win last week Aquinas will be raring to go . However I am not yet convinced that the Friars wagon has become a sled and expect them to bounce back and earn themselves another promotion this year.

The Redz weren't disgraced against the Sainters who threw Brownlow Gold , . : ty into the role of troubleshooter to halt the Redz courageous fightback .

As expected Old Carey, La Tro be & Doveton all had big margins to spare in their wins over the Ze , ' y the Clays and the Eagles . Williamstown fully deserved the bridesmaid's spot with a strong win over the F r Trotters bayside. So what can be said about the non-finalists in terms of the future?

Williamstown : basically a young side who with consistency and discipline should definitely make the four next year, especially if H .B. can play out a full season . I wouldn't write off Rollo yet .

Comm Bank: I think that consistency is probably the key to the Har ry 's chances of success next year. Possibly too, they could do with an injection of youth - a few spunky tellers perhaps !

Uni Reds : Redz had their best season for several years . If coach, Laurie Duffus retains his key players the Redz should be a finals side . The six-million-injury-man, Buster Hosking is expected to return for his 12th season .

Footscray I .T. : the Eagles soared early then landed heavily and never got off the ground again . No doubt, Johnny Moroney will analyse the problems over the summer months . Probably a settling down of the many new players will assist .

A.N .Z. : the Zedders had a few highlights but basically lacked the depth of skills to challenge the better sides, recruitment is essential together with full support for the recently revamped administration .

St . Leonards: with natural development the young players of St . Leonards will push up the ladder next year ; 2-3 years to challenge for finals success .

Clayton : the Clays won three then lost fifteen so they clearly need to rethink their future - again recruitment and committment are the keys.

Eltham: the Artistic Turtles may have finished bottom but their potential for future success is great - good facilities and suport, youthful talent and enthusiasm . The big improvers in 1989.

REVIEW OF MATCHES PLAYED AUGUST 13, 1988 G SECTION PRELIMINARY FINA L Monash Whites greater accuracy enabled them to tie this game with Bulleen Templestowe who, despite having more of the play on their forward line, were unable to kick the winning score.

H SECTIO N FIRST SEMI FINA L St . Kevin's with greater steadiness in their forward line, ran out twelve point winners over State Bank, who despite having more of the play in their scoring zone, were unable to clinch the game . Nevertheless the Banker's performance, when judged on home and away form, was a most creditable one because St. Kevin's had been clearly the better side during the sixteen minor rounds .

UNDER 19 SECTION 1 (Round 17) Old Paradians Gre en, despite a slow start, clearly defeated Collegians by seventy eight points . However this vin was virtually in vain because University Blues snapped from their recent lethargy to rejoin the winning st at the expense of Bulleen Templestowe who went down by seventy nine points. Thus with one round to clay the Blues hold fourth place by ten per cent from the Old Paradians. Marcellin defeated Old Haileybu ry by twenty points and as a result of De La Salle Blue defeating Old Xaverians by five points, Marcellin have replaced the Xaverians in second place . . . at least for a week ! in direct contrast to the May 28 forfeit by cMelbourne High School Old Boys, Therry forfeited to the High School Old Boys. I wonder if this situation has occurred before?

UNDER 19 Section 2 (Round 17 ) Round 17 results, although settling the Final Four, have prompted speculation as to what might happen in the ina!s . C.B.C. St. Kilda justified my selection as they were unable to defeat Caulfield Grammarians by thirty six points . Caulfield's percentage still looks like saving their position in the section while C.B.C. St . Kilda looks certain to be relegated . Old Scotch, consolidated their finals berth when, aided by uncanny accuracy, they accounted for Old Melburnians by sixty eight points. Banyule continued their fine form when they thrashed second placed Ormond by the wide margin of eighty seven points . With such awesome displays Banyule are really proving their worth . No rt h Old Boys, who coveted a final's berth, proved no match for the Whitefriars machine and went down to the leaders by one hundred and fourteen points . No rth's none too health percentage ihus took another battering . University Blacks, facing inevitable relegation forfeited to St. Bernards.

UNDER 19 Section 3 (Round 17) Hampton Rovers made mockery of my match forecast when they defeated Old Brighton Grammarians by nineteen points. The Rovers who clearly had most of the play in their forward line are now running into fine form at the right time.

St. Kevins recorded an eighteen point victory over De La Salle Gold despite their inaccurate kicking . The season has now ended for St . Kevins whose depth of talent should have enabled the side to participate in the finals. A big opening quarter effort by Parkside enabled them to easily account for Aquinas. After the first quarter Parkside onslaught Aquinas were never really a serious challenge to Parkside supremacy. Old Paradians Purple received a forfeit ffom Old Essendon Grammarians while Monash Blues had the bye.

PREVIEW OF MATCHES TO BE PLAYED AUGUST 20-21,1988 G SECTION PRELIMINARY FINAL REPLAY Bulleen Templestowe and Monash Whites meet again on Sunday at Eistemwick Park . The venue, I believe, will prove a key factor in deciding the results because I suspect the younger and fitter Monash Whites to outrun Bulleen Templestowe and thus set up sufficient scoring opportunities to win the match .

H SECTION PRELIMINARY FINA L G .T.V.9 and St . Kevins meet at Elsternwick Park to decide who will challenge Old Xaverians for the premiership.

Although G .T.V.9 has a more dependable forward line, from which four players are listed among the leading H Section goalkickers, I expect St . Kevins to reverse the results of the two home and away games by defeating G .T.V.9 today. I believe St . Kevins will possess the pace to outrun G .T.V.9 and thus establish more scoring opportunities on the wide expanses of Elsternwick Park .

UNDER 19 Section 1 (Round 18 ) Collegians travel to Bulleen Templestowe for a vital match for each side because the winner will avoid relegation Bulleen Templestowe were impressive against Old Paradians Gre en in Round 16 and today I believe they will win and thus send Collegians back to Section 2 after one season in Section 1 . University Blues face a real danger game - it is vacation and Therry's G round is not the easiest to find . I am tempted to select Therry but given the results of both sides in Round 17 I must select University Blues to win . Old Xaverianrs should be able to cruise to a comfortable victory ove Melbourne High School Old Boys who are Section 2 bound Old Paradians G reen will be keen to defeat Old Haileybu ry to prove they are the best side outside the finai four. At Bundoora, the Old Paradians are my selection . In a final's preview De La Salle Blue travel to Marcellin for what promises to be a great game . De La Salle have done all asked of them while Marcellin are a big strong and talented side . At the risk of being wrong I select Marcellin because they have a stronger incentive and the home ground advantage .

UNDER 19 Section 2 (Round 18 ) Old Scotch, safely in the final four should have little difficulty defeating C.B .C . St . Kilda who look bound f0r Section 3 come Season 1989 . Second placed side Ormond will be out to recapture form for next week's Semi Final by defeating Old Melburnians today. Sorry O.M . readers but I cannot see your season having a fairy tale ending . The big section match of the last round sees undefeated leaders Whitefriars journey to Banyule.

The Banyule brains trust is confident the side is moving inexorably to the Grand Final . For this dream to become reality the players must overcome Whitefriars today. The small ground with its prevailing winds which Banyule use so well will trouble Whitefriars during the game . Nevertheless while being really tempted to select Banyule I am conscious of Whitefriars impressive record and so I select Whitefriars to win narrow!y. Two of the season's disappointing sides Caulfield Grammarians & St . Bernards meet on Oval 3 . Caulfield are always hard to beat at home but I feel St. Bernards have more to recommend them so I select the visitors to win . University Blacks are at home to No rt h Old Boys who will be anxious to prove they are the best side outside the final four. I am confident No rth Old Boys will win this game.

UNDER 19 Section 3 (Round 18 ) Old Paradians Purple, who haven't played since July 30, face a danger game today against Hampton Rovers .

The Rovers are a formidable foe at home and they will give a much better account of themselves at home than, they did at Bundoora on May 21 . Mindful of the fact the Paradian players have not played a match for three weeks and they say some of them are not dedicated to hard work on the training track I select Hampton Rovers to win narrowly after a tense struggle. Old Brighton Grammarians should be able to comfortably defeat De La Salle Gold . If Old Brighton can't, then their final's chances must be lessened . Old Essendon Grammarians, who must have learned a lot this season, are at home to Parkside.

I believe Parkside will finish their season with a comfortable win . Aquinas, whose form is unreliable, are at home to Monash Blues whom I expect to be sufficiently talented to win the game well . St . Kevin's have the Bye. As this is my last article for all sides I thank my readers whom I know read my words voraciously each week .

COMMONWEALTH BANK FC MILESTONE Congratulations to Steve Nicholson and Mick McLellan who recently played their 50th game for the Cobras.

Steve is in his fourth year as senior coach and the milestone would have been achieved earlier if not for the surgeon's knife. Steve leads by example and would not ask his players to do something he would not do himself. Nicko's skills are a feature of his game especially his drop kicks at training (drop kicks?)

Mick is your typical backman, mean and selfish . He hates letting his opponents get a touch of the football, and on most occasions he succeeds . Macka is having a marvellous season ad could very well figure in our B&F A quiet person by nature, he is well liked by all .

OTF extends congratulations to Mark Mason (Preston Marist Brothers) on his runaway win in the 'D' Section Best & Fairest . Mark received the Cec Pepper Medal from VAFA President Jim Hawkins at the 'DEF' vote count held at Elsternwick Park last Wednesday . It's been quite a year for Mark as it follows on his selection in he Victorian team which defeated South Australia in Adelaide back in May and of course, his team is poised ;o enter 'C' Section for the first time if it can repeat last weeks success against the Rovers . Mark's performance n polling 11 3 vote games was outstanding . oTF extends similar congratulations to Bernie Tierney (Whitefriars) and Mark Wilkinson (Aquinas OC) who *led for the Jack Fullerton Medal . For Bernie it was back to back success following his win in F Section last season whilst Wilkinson, like Mason, won interstate selection and will also be playing for 'D' Section today .

Both players received 14 votes and in line with recent Executive Policy, both received medals ! , na!ly congratulations to Mark Cannon of Williamstown CYMS, a clear winner of the Ossie Meehan Medal .

Quite a year for "Marks" although the Seagulls missed the finals this year. Peter Hille reckons they're a real show in 1989 . And for the record Peter says you read it first in his column last week! Have to be a chance for a Fenwick after that effort Mark! Whilst landing credit on Peter we noticed Chris Rowston gave'Mase' a chance too!

It could well have happened before - but not with one of the draws being a G Section Preliminary Final . *~* Preston lost top spot on the D Section ladder by the narrow margin of 0.01 per cent . "/hi!st the gym found some out and the aerobics a few more, never was the spa so more inviting for all participants han at the end of this gruelling session (must have been some spa!!) . It was great to see the many goal umpires en}oying themselves . **~ ,,'!ho were the two field umpires that gave the "all clear" together from opposite pockets? The clue must be at they blinded each other from the sun off their heads . ~** George and Nancy McTaggart would like to thank all the umpires who have driven son Peter to or from his natches this season . 50 GAMES TO Z's DEFENDE R All at ANZ today congratulate our Reserves custodian Andy Bennett on playing his 50th game for our club against Old Ca rey.

Sharky is very quiet and unobtrusive and goes about his work in a very proficient manner.

As a backman he is very light and not being that tall is giving away height to his opponents each week, but this does not deter him, as he battles against the odds each week to try and help the Zedders up the ladder.

Andy has been around for a while now and has helped in recruiting a few good players to our club through his cricketing contacts which is greatly appreciated by all .

Perhaps his biggest claim to fame was the removal of the DJ from the Players Disco a few weeks ago with a few well chosen words and the pretty discreet use of a broom .

Steve joined Banyule after a very successful senior career from Brunswick . He is a rugged close checking defence player who has blened well into the Banyule club. This year he was appointed to the coaching position of our reserve team and has that team locked into second position .

1st SEMI FINAL 5 YEARS AGO - 198 3 it :oas a big week in the VAFA - President Alex Johnson was recovering from a heart attack, Peter French became a father for the first time, and Margot Bassett, joined the VAFA staff where it was belieed That all callers would benefit from her ready wit and oersonality! The VAFA moved from its temporary offices in Little Collins Street to Elsternwick Park . in A Section Collegians found its early season form and outpaced and outplayed the slower No rth Old Boys to win by 29 points, 17.15.117 to 13.10 .88. Best ;ere Cook, Chosich, Olphant (Coll) & Welch, Jordon, Considine (NOB) .

In the B Section first semi, Kew 37 points down at ihe first change, 20 at half time, and 26 at the last change, got up by one point to beal Alphington ~3 .17.95 to 13.16 .94. Best were Haralambopoulos, Jackomos, Varney, Burden, Anderson, Blay (Kew) .

-5 goals in C Section first semi saw Parkside come away in the final term to beat Hampton Rovers 26 .17. to 19 .21 . Good players for the winners were Heaver, Allan, Sonsonetti ( Park .) & Jones, Stephens, Beck (Hampton Rovers) .

Best and Fairest votes for D, E and F Sections were counted at a dinner at Marcellin . In 'D' A . White (Therry), G . Maher (State Bank), & F . At half time No rt h Old Boys & Ivanhoe, 13 points apart, looked set for a tough second half but it was not to be. North Old Boys went on to kick 11 .7 in the second half to Ivanhoe's ten behinds . Finals Arrangements 1 . In all finals matches the team which has finished in the higher position on the Premiership ladder at the conclusion of the home and away matches shall (a) Wear its registred uniform for home matches and have choice of rooms, unless there is a clash of uniforms when V.A .F.A. Rule 46 (ii) B (amended 4/6/86) will apply . (b) Provide the following (i) Six goal flags . (ii) Scoreboard numbers, attendant and competing club name plates. (iii) Siren or bell . (iv) Interchange steward . (v) Stretcher . (vi) One goal umpire's coat . (vii) Goal and boundary umpires IN CASE REQUIRED (viii) Timekeeper. (ix) Drinks for umpires at intervals .

2 . The team finishing in the lower position shall (a) Wear its registered uniform for away matches or in the event of a clash conform with Rule 46 (white shorts only permitted) .

If a change of uniform is required particulars of the substituted uniform must be advised to the Editor of the Amateur Footballer on the Monday morning prior to the match . (b) Provide the following (i) One goal umpire's coat . (ii) Goal and boundary umpires IN CASE REQUIRED (iii) Timekeeper.

3. The winning club shall be responsible for complying with the Press Correspondent's requirements which were printed in the Amateur Footballer on August 6th . .

Footballs for all finals matches will be provided by the Association and the cost borne equally by the competing 4 Clubs. Winning club will have choice of balls. . i .e. correctly sewn on numbers . Numbers 5. Fines will be strictly imposed for uniforms not up to standard must accord with those appearing in the Amateur Footba!!er. Your club is on show - LOOK THE PART!! .

6. Clubs whose grounds are used for finals matches have first refusal on the provision of canteen facilities Should the home club not wish to take advantage the offer moves to the competing club which finished in the higher position at the end of the home and away matches . .

Extra time sha!l be played in any drawn match of the reserve grade or G or H Section .

7 When the final siren sounds the players will remain on the field, change ends and in the meantime the goal umpires will meet and confirm that the scores are in fact level . Once confirmation is notified to the field umpire,t 5 minutes plus time on will be p!ayed after which the siren will be sounded . The teams will cross straigh over (without an address from coach) and play another 5 minutes plus time on . In the event that the scores are still level the match will be declared a draw and replayed the following week .

MONASH BLUE S John 'SOS' Andritsos played his 50th game for Monash recently against Therry A great clubman and team mate, SOS has been a valuable rover and forward pocket for the Blues . Don't be fooled by his size, though! SOS can often be found on a big Saturday night carrying ruckman Steve Zach around on his shoulders, and anybody else who dares to challenge him . 'Peter's little brother' has also carved out a name for himself in the intervarsity ranks, especially for his strange penchant for 'Crazy Horse' strip venues, hence the chant 'Crazy SOS OOH, Crazy SOS AAAAG'! 200 GAMES TO N .O.B: S LEGEND Congratulations to North Old Boys legend Noel Robe rt son on playing his 200th game with the club today against Marcellin . Noel began his career with the club in 1970, having come direct from the North O.B. breeding ground, the senior school in North Melbourne. Since that time, Noel has appeared in the 1977 and 1978 North Old Boys': Grade Grand Final sides, both losses, which were great disappointments, and many other Reserves finals sides . Noel has gained a great reputation around North as one of the toughest, yet fairest players the club has seen . Having retired in 1982, 'Robbo' made a comeback this year at the ripe old age of 36 in an attempt to help out the struggling Reserves team . Judging by his form, . he could still play next year. Apart from his relentless attitude as a half-back flanker or ruck-rover, Noel has spent some time as a North committee-man, and the achievement of the 200 game milestone will automatically entitle him to 'Life Membership' of the club. Congratulaions Noel from all members, players and supports of North Old Boys on a truly great effort .

9 150 GAMES TO N .O .B's IAN TURNBULL ' Congratulations from all North Old Boys member s and supporters to Ian Turnbull on reaching the 150 games milestone today against Marcellin . Ian joined the club in 1980 and after one year in the U19s, it was obvious his height and strength would carry him through many more senior games with the club . Now a very experienced players, Ian has played in a number of Grand finals, and is looked upon as an off-field leader. Although essentially a ruckman, Ian has easily slotted into most of the key positions during his career. 1988 has been a most consistent year for this quiet N .O.B. and his best fooball is still ahead .

Personality Par s 50 UP AT OLD HAILEYBUR Y Garry Phillips plays his 50th game for Old Haileyburians today. This slender wingman with the vertical takeoff and telescopic arms has become well known for his ariel skills along with those raking kicks and implaccable demeanour . Last year Garry won the club Best & Fairest in his first year of senior football playing almost entirely as a specialist wingman, although this season he has also filled in in a variety of other positions such as centre-half-forward, the centre and ruck-roving .

So far the fair-haired and softly-spoken young champ has managed to avoid a cluc nickname, although 'Bones' looked a chance for a while . Garry somehow survived his first VAFA representative match for the 'CDEFG' team last year after its infamous night bus trip, playing well enough to secure a place for the Adelaide match this June . A Sunday Press/VAFA "Player of the Week", he has been joined at the club by his younger brother Wayne who captains the Under 19s. Father Ken played for South Melbourne in the 60's, when Sydney has yet to finish its Opera House, let alone buy a football side .

Recognising that youthful leaderhip was one of the Bloods' greatest assets, the Haileybury brainstrust appointed Garry as vice-captain of the Club . This example to date has been of the highest quality and includes all the hard work of football - notably the tenacious tackling which has become another trademark .

Personality Par s JACK'S TO N One of the greatest contributors to the current morale around Old Haileybury is John Kingsley, who plays his hundredth game today. A versatile big man, "Jack" won the Most Improved trophy for his efforts a season or two at centre half-back in the firsts, yet he is equally dangerous around goal . One of the strong Dingley push at the club along with his mate "Curtains" (see next week's record), "JK" is not notes for his ambidexterity but those left-foot torps are a favourite - and we're working on the two-sided handballs! Our durable number 20 with the droopy mo is at his most convivial after the game, whether it be for the Bloods in winter or the Saguirs in summer .

This year 'Gil' and 'Jack' would always be found in the happiest corner of the McKinnon social rooms .

Last week an impressive display saw him notch 5 goals with the greatest of ease in the Magood - his skills have also been useful when called to arms in the firsts . One way or another it looks like JK could be tasting success in '88 .

100 UP FOR B K Congratulations to Brendan 'BK' Kellar who plays his 100th game for Uni Blacks against Monash at Uni today . BK came to the Blacks from the 'Bool in 1982 and soon established himself as a nippy, but tough rover. In 1984 he was an integral member of the '84 Reserves Premiership. BK's other achievements include being selected in the I/V All Australian team in 1985 and winning the Cordner Medal (B&F) in that year also.

BK does have one other aim and that is to play a full season - BK you never know! Once again all the best as you get your chance to lead the side out today !

Personality Par s TWO 100's ST CAULFIELD Caulfield Grammarians pay tribute to And rew Harlock on reaching the milestone of 100 games with the Club. Andrew joined Caulfield from Old Geelong in 1980 and has been a permanent fixture in the senior team ever since . Although restricted to just one game in 1986 and 1987 because of back and shoulder injuries, 'Esky' has fought back courageously and it is a pleasure to once again see those long torpedo punts heading goalwards from the half back or half forward line . A member of our 1983 'C' Grade Premiership side, 'Esky' is a popular and respected player at the club and is fully deserving of our most sincere congratulations .

Jeremy first played in 1981 and immediately established himself as a permanent senior player . His familiar dashes around the wing often ended in goals either to himself or someone else in the team . These days, as one of the more experienced players in the side, and perhaps with pace slowing and hair thinning, "Jezza' may also be found occupying the forward or back pocket, but still remains a valuable contributors to the team . Also a member of our 1983 'C' Grade Premiership side, Jezza is a popular, loyal and respected member of the club . Well done and we look forward to many more fine games .

Congratulations from all at Caulfield Grammarians to Andrew Norman on playing his 50th game for the Club . Young, dashing Andy burst on to the scene at Caulfield like a bombshell in 1986 after a brief interlude at Monash Blues . Known around the club for his varying lengths of hair, he is the only player still without a license. (Although he does ride a very pretty push bike!) His daring dashed down the wing have become almost as famous as the amount of time he spends at kick-to-kick after training . A great player, a great clubman, a great guy, well done Andrew and thanks for the memories .

Caulfield Grammarians congratulate Greg Paine on playing his 50th game for the Club. Greg joined Caulfield from the School in 1985 and certainly embodies the spirit of this club and amateur football .

Distinguished by sideburns, and clothes rejected by the Salvo's, at times Painey has looked more at home on his motor scooter than on the pavilion wing on Oval No. 3 . Though plagued by injury and illness he is no to be deterred and has fought valiantly with courage and committment . Well done Painey - a great player and a great amateur. We'll never forget you .

BLACKERS HEAD O/ S Over the years Uni Blacks have seriously? considered setting up an international team with the number of players that have gone off to study or work .

This year we are set to lose two important club members, Gerard Dalbosco and Nick Clark . Firstly a big thanks to Gerry who has been our very hard working and efficient secretary over the past two years . 'Yappa' is heading to the U .S . on work commitments . Secondly former Captain Nick Clark is heading to Harvard to complete a MBA .

Both players will be missed and we all wish you much success in your respective careers.

100 FOR GIFFO St . Kevin's Old Boys congratulate Adrian Giffin on his admission to the 100 club two weeks ago against St . Kilda CBC . Seemingly recruited late in his career in 1980 from Sindal-Tally-Ho, Giffo immediately took up the pivot position in the seniors .

Now with the passing of time and ankles that need cement casts, he prefers the more relaxed atmosphere in H Grade where he is second in the competition goal kicking . Look our Prowsey, Gigg says he feels a big bag coming in .

Needless to say Giff is a great clubman, always willing to help and never stops encouraging younger players .

But what about women . Giff says "who needs them, I can play 300 games the way I'm going" .

To Giggo, a very eligible 35 we say keep on keeping on . Curly says much more bur space it too valuable .

OLD SCOTCH U19's lifted after 1/2 time to ovecome Old Melburnians by 10 gaols . The side was spurred on by the efforts by John Kerr and Nick Hooper, and Jason Aghan again rucked strongly . Pu rves, McGre gor & Williamson came off the bench and added much venom and vigour, with Williamson especially showing great courage . James Sinclair & Chris Atinson once again controled the centre line .

"OLD CAREY - LOOKING GREAT IN '88" OLD CAREY Bon voyage to 'Big E' Mark Evans . Mark sets off on September 17th for Munich and the'Oktoberfest' meeting up with Old Carey mate Chris McHarg and together they will be back for next season .
