Peter French's view of Round 1

Old Xaverians provided the biggest surprise of the round following its decisive and impressive win over Ormond and I've a hunch some of their more renowned supporters were equally surprised !

There were many faces missing from both sides, although Nick Bourkes 9 goal effort suggested Xavs have a ready made replacement for Steve Curtain who has retired along with Messrs. Burne and Wilton .

Ormond badly missed on-ball players Paul Cox and Martin Tobin which allowed Danny Meagher and new

comers to the Xavs, Graeme McMillan ( Nth Melb.), Mark Bain (Geelong College) & Graeme Gooding ( Dimboola) to have a field day. Former AJAX Captain, Ric Marks enjoyed the return to A Section football and was one of Xavs. best whilst Antony Callan showed those who may have doubted his ability following the '87 Grand Final that he'll be pressing for higher honors in 1988 .

Former Geelong Grammar star Sam Furphy quickly learnt the difference between school footy and A Section but along with Richard Curtain & Paul Klein was not disgraced . For Ormond Paul Forsythe showed he is one of the most improved players in A Section whilst new recruits Andrew Best ( Old Mentonians) & Matt Burns (Old Brighton) showed they have what it takes . Scott Taylor, Paul Sutherland & Mark Gilmore battled hard all day .

I was surprised at the way a number of Ormond players fumbled, especially overhead and the debut of prize recruits Stuart Carboon & Andrew Jobling would have disappointed some at Ormond . I felt that for his first A Section game Carboon was reasonable although I would have switched him into the ruck sooner . Jobling was steady and obviously under pressure . He will improve on that effort .

Marcellin did well to beat University Blues whose slow start and last term fadeout would have worried Alan Salter. However he must have been pleased with the form of his new recruits John Kanis, Paris Aristotle & Nick Longmire . The Eagles who were without Andy Cullinan, Mick Day, Tony Amad, Wayne McDonnel & Tony Caffrey can be well pleased with their effort . The Getson brothers were in great touch whilst new skipper Dirk Ebert was inspirational . Mark Cooper & Gary Petroff were dangerous forwards but must improve their kicking for goal .

De La & Old Paradians struggled in blustery conditions before O. â–ş?'s broke away adding 5 goals against the wind in the final quarter.

De La struggled for goal scores whilst OPs had either Owen Abrahams or Tony Pritchard who kicked 4 goals as focal points.

Collegians & North O.B.'s turned on a thriller at the Trott . The Lions produced some of their '86 form on occasions and have welcomed the return of Mark Hibbins and Jeremy Schmidt . They still have Geoff Lemon & Richard Herman to return, Geoff English is back from South Australia and have picked up youngsters Galbraith & Habben . No rt h relied on experienced Paul Considine, ruck rover Ben Curulli and talented utility Tony Egan .

Chris Hibbert was a dangerous forward and Con Alevros did well on the wing .

Old Scotch surprised me with their performance. They ran the ball well, tackled strongly and with Ed Allen a chance to return plus Rob Fuller in a fortnight the Cardinals were all smiles on Saturday night .

We will all have a better idea on their future after their clash with Xavs . today.

The Sist Report on B Sectio n Promoted teams St . Kevins & Old Ivanhoe had markedly different returns to the section in a round where with one exception all winning margins were above seven goals . Banyule & St . Kilda CBC obviously wish to make their relegations temporary and took the top two places at the earlist opportunity.

Peter French started the season off well by tipping 4 out of 5 winners, missing on the Parkside-Bulleen game .

I must admit I thought Parkside would win, unaer President Tom Johnston they have recruited heavily an d

had an excellent pre-season . New coach Wayne Bannister must have been disappointed with their form . There may be some excuses with injuries and a few players being at a wedding, but for a team that usually starts well their could be some problems . Bulleen on the other hand played superb football all day. They did not lose many players on their way down to B Grade. The pleasing aspect for them in last Saturday's game was the good form of junior players . Pulse, Shine & Tsiotinas .

Newcomers Caulfield & Monash fought out a close game at Albert Park . Monash just had the edge in the last auarter kicking with the wind . Caulfield had a couple of chances to get in front but inaccuracy cost them .

Mona~h also moved the ball more directly in what was a high standard game . Having lost last years Captain Peter Formbes, A ndy McGregor has taken over the reins and is enthusiastic about Monash being competitive .

Caulfield suffered a blow losing John Kanis to Uni Blues - they have retained most of their other players and Alan Naldor has returned from O/S . Like Bulleen, Caulfield has relied on its juniors for recruiting, of the 6 selected in the senior side last Saturday Armstrong, Worsley & Kahofer all did well .

Therry continued on their winning way accounting for a much weakened Ivanhoe . Whilst Therry were a good side last year they have recruited well to get that extra depth . They retained all their players including Crott, Matton & Reddick who trained with VFL clubs pre-season . Tony Crotthas convinced his brother to come across from Strathmore . Add a few juniors like Zanetti & Taylor who did well last Saturday and they are set to be a good side. Ivanhoe on the other hand have lost a number of senior players from last year and have relied mainly on last years premiership U19 players to bolster the side . Coach Kevin Breen may have to look at consolidating this team of youngsters for this seaso n

In the other games new coaches Stephen Buckley (Fawkner) & Max Trotter (Trinity) matched tactics . Despite losing Terry Young Fawkner have had a good start to the year, with a more professional build-up under Buckley and a few good recruits, they were too strong for Trinity . Trinity will be looking for a better result next week at ther new home ground at St . James Park . Burwood .

The Kew-Blacks game was a one sided affair and without taking anything away from Kew, Blacks just weren't there and hopefully this is just their usual pre-season start . Kew showed that they mean business and Brett Buiden ( coach) set a fine example on Saturday by being one of their better players .

Match of the day could be at the home of section veterans O. Haileyburians, who won their tense opening game for the first time since 1980 . New coach Phil Stevens's team contained only eight 1987 senior regulars and was boosted by recruits Taranto & Jury and the return of Long John Bingham . Their opponents Banyule effectively disposed of Melbourne High, kicking away after half time with their running players doing most damage - this was hardly surprising as like many teams in the competition Banyule are not renowned for their height .

The Collingwood 6 footer is back in town! By contrast the home side is well endowed with tall timbe r Melbourne High welcomed new coach . former Melbourne premiership great John Lord, with erratic oractice match form and valuable recruits Dawson & Dowling (returned from Hawthorn) as well as graduates of their successful under-nineteem teams . With many players still getting to know each other they face Old M elburnians who are in less glamorous but harder working mood this year. Only the ageless Plzarsk . now at full back, has halted a drop in the average age of the team by two or three years. It is this youth which is taking the lead from new skipper Andy Witts who last week kicked a couple of inspirational "long bombs" of goals . O M 's Guest of the Day, new headmaster Tony Hill may be a rugby man at heart but was suitably impressed . today the small High School ground will suit the home side's big man power and negate OM's runners . but not enoug h The away team in Thomastown-Old Brighton games usually faces a six-goal disadvantage . The departure of Sam Assetta and others is an added burden for the northerners, who have wisely invested in younger replacements . Take of the 'Town is wingman M ick Sinni, now on Colfingwoods senior list having played all his football with the Bears . Old Brighton must have been stunned by OM s eight-goal opening quarter, but held their own thereafter through great endeavour. Their performance may have been decided on Tuesday night when solo ruckman and captain-coach M ark Sarau faced the tribunal, Still, their chances improve with every sailboard seen on the water, and their knowledge of the flukey winds shouid see them through .

St . Kevins will seek and find revenge for last year's Grand Final loss against Old Ivanhoe, who face a slow start with injuries, unavailability and training attendances that can (must) improve . Skevs have a balance of strength and experience and the confidence of an unbeaten practice match series . Having lost only ruckman Robson (to Old Geelong), they gained that vital early break last week . whilst the Grammarians lagged all day being shorter and especially lighter than St . Kilda CBC. Playing a demoted B-grade team first up from D-grade is no easy task, but is an experience they will have learnt from .

Finally Balaclava must be disappointed having snatched but later surrendered an early lead on their windy, undulating ground which will see few visiting wins this year. Former player Peter Darvel returns as St . Kilda's CBC coach, so he should know a few of their tricks! He would have been delighted with his charges' form last week, especially Riddell, who kicked 11 goals to continue his fine late-season form of 1987 . CBC's playing staff is very much "as you were" but they could be one of the teams to beat this season - their practice match form included a win over Old Caulfield and a loss to Parks de . The Bala's physical strength, as exemplified by State players Gregory & Rafferty, will extend the visitors much more this week My selection of St Kilda CB C

The opening round of the season saw close results from all games, giving an indication oi a possible even competition . As your reporter for this year. I hope to make this section as interesting as possible giving all clubs a chance to be heard . Now to put the acid test on me for this weeks selections, tongue in cheek, I'll take a pin and select : West Brunswick who are pleased to be back in D Section . put in an excellent second half last week, and at home will take the points from Elsternwick .

Stabb!ng even further in the dark Bulleen United having won first up last week, to beat Preston, Old Camberwell to bounce back to win over North Brunswick & AJAX at home are always hard to beat and this week wdl be too strong for State Bank .

Hampton Rovers back in D Section for the first time in 11 years have a young and inexperienced side, but showed plenty of pace and coach !an Rice would have liked a stronger finish, are my selection over neighbours Old Mentonians in a close one.

I take this opportunity to wish all Clubs success for the season and dont forget please ring me for all your club trivia, believable or not!

A look at E Section by John Palmer First of all let me thank Peter French who in last week's Amateur Footballer graciously included me in his team of '-Reoorters'for this year. I doubt whether that title befits my very limited journalistic ability but I will try and do justice to the E Section coverage . Following Norm Nugent will be difficult as his comments always made sense and I hope my home team bias is not too obvious .

In reviewing the opening round of games last week, it is worthy to note that E Section provided the only drawn game for the entire competition . Powerhouse on its home track ended the game against a finalist from last year. St. Bedes, with the same number of points . A!thought the Powerhouse members may disagree on last year's form, and that is all I have to go on at this stage, my thoughts would have favoured St . Bedes but Powerhouse must have recruited well and forced the first drawn game for the year.

Most other results (on last year's form) were predictable with 1987 F Section Grand Finalists Aquinas & Whitefriars both recording strong wins at the expense of Heatherton, another newcomer to the section this year and Peninsula . Although it is only early days, these results suggest the victors in these two games may be final four contenders .

The battle of the "OLDS", Essendon & Geelong in what I imagine would have been quite windy conditions r; the North West saw the home team record a comfortable win as did Brunswick over UHSOB at Royal Park .

Another first occurred for these two teams at Brens Oval last Saturday. Namely the appearance of Sharon Alger as field umpire. Sharon turned in an excellent performance and both teams were singing her praises until well after the game on Saturday night . I have not seen the "new" goal sneak in the ones at UHSOB for some time and it seems his prowess in front of goal almost measures as high as his talent for winning competitions well done Tony Boyce !

Now for my first foray into the tipping business . Old Essendon make the long journey down to St . Bedes and whilst I expect improvement from St . Bedes at home, Old Essendon should sneak home with the points .

Aquinas may find the hugh spaces at Como a bit of a problem at first but I expect them to be too strong for Old Geelong . Heathe rton & UHSOB is a tough one to pick as both teams were soundly beaten last week .

Perhaps the home ground advantage will sway in Heatherton's favour but it would not surprise me if the Old Bovs pot up.

Powerhouse welcome the Whitefriars at Ross Gregory for the first time and even accounting for the home team simnroved form in Round one I think the visitors will record another wi n Peninsula make the Iong . long trek to Brunswick today, a good journey to get out of the way early in the year l don't expect the trip to provide the visitors with any pleasure at all, except for the after match socialising, and select Brunswick to win .

First round results indicated that the summer favourites for 1988 success are in early season form . 1987 finalists, St. And rews & Doveton together with relegatee Clayton all recorded impressive victories, although "new chum" Eltham, did well to run "the Clays" to nineteen points at the end, "The Artists" are on a free dinner at Jorgy's Restaurant for each victory so motivation won't be a problem .

St . Andrews, even without champion CHF " Bruce the goose" Campbell (on his post-cricket walkabout), were easily accountable for ANZ Bank . "The Doves" allowed for some inaccuracy to keep Commonwealth Bank within range but seem set for another successful season .

In other matches : Old Ca rey put a huge dent in the hopes of "the Fitites" whose long-serving administrative manager and back-pocket, Peter "Swan" Richardson, had spent his off season scouring European beer festivals for a latter day Sean Wright ; Williamstown went for percentage against St . Leonards and got it ; in the battle of the 1 .0's LaTrobe used the wind far more intelligently that Uni Reds down at the picturesque Brunswick St .

Oval, a venue again under a cloud with the land rights claim pursued by Fitzroy All Stars .

PLAYER OF THE ROUND : LaTrobe's will-o-the-wisp winger Darren Poole who staggered the Reds with 32 possessions, each of them effective.

THIS WEEK'S MATCHES My tips for Round 1 were sent to "The Truth" by mistake, but I'm confident you'1l accept in good faith, my claim of 5 winners out of 6 .

I missed out on Latrobe thinking the Reds would be inspired by the motivation talk from Paul "Molly" Meldrum and the massage treatment from their prize recruit, Rochelle . Match of the Round is St . Andrews v Doveton, both made the finals last year and are early favourites for promotion to E Grade in 1989 . The sides appear evenly matched around the ground with key players committed to the running style of football . I lean towards the Sainters because of their home ground, Frearley Reserve which is large enough for "12 a side" football and gives the Sainters full back every chance of leading the goalkicking . Sainters by 25 points in a tough contest . In other matches : Uni Reds (after skipper, Charles Hosking, went berserk with the cordial bottle following last week's loss) should bounce back against Old Carey who have upset the Reds in recent years ; Williamstown at home to ANZ Bank have a forward line to trouble all sides and should win unles the Bankers speedy on-all players can achieve more consistency and better delivery ; Clayton, despite the trauma associated with a journey to the wilds of Patterson Rivers, should achieve victory over St . Leonards by several goals. "The Artists" have a chance of exhibiting their skills to a home town crowd and should overcome a riled team of "Fitites" by about 3 goals; in the other close one I fancy the Harry Trotters to close the current account for LaTrobe by less than a sausage.

Review of matched played 9 .4.1988 - Round 1

G SECTION . Despite inaccuracy by both sides De La Salle proved too strong for Collegians and ran out winners by twenty two points . St . Bernards overwhelmed Bulleen/Templestowe by the gargantuan margin of one hundred and seventy five points to set themselves as the side to beat this season . That bad kicking is bad football was borne out in the eighteen point margin of an accurate Old Scotch over an inaccurate Old Melburnians ho had seven more scoring shots . Greater accuracy enabled Bloods to win by thirteen points against their brother club Old Haileybury . The closest game of the round was that between Marcellin & Kew where Kew despite having most of the play were only able to win by seven points . Monash Whites received a walkover from Po rt Colts.

H SECTION . Despite their inaccuracy in front of goal GTV9 were still able to defeat Swinburne co-tenants Richmond Central by sixty two points . Therry showed remarkable improvement on their 1987 form when they outplayed Powerhouse before winning by one hundred and fourteen points. CBC St . Kilda heartened their supporters by their big victory over Balaclava by the margin of one hundred and thirty eight points . Old Xaverians despite their inaccuracy proved too strong for State Bank before winning by seventy seven points . Old Geelong forfeited to St . Kevins .

UNDER 19 SECTION 1 Despite the windy Albert Park conditions De La Salle Blue proved too strong for Collegians and ran out winners by forty five points . University Blues lived up to their strong reputation when they had a winning margin of thirty nine points over an inaccurate Marcellin . Old Pardians Green defeated Melbourne High Schiool Old Boys by thirty five points after a high scoring game at the High School . In the closest game in the section newly promoted Therry defeated 1987 finalist Bulleen Templestowe by nine points . Reigning premiers Old Xaverians showed they are again a force to be reckoned with as they ran out easy winners over Old Haileybury by one hundred and twelve points .

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 Banyule proved my judgement poor when they defeated North Old Boys by fourteen points. The University Blacks were another side to make mockery of my tipping when they convincingly defeated the Old Melburnians by thirty five points . Old Scotch found little difficulty in overcoming CBC St . Kilda's home ground advantage as the Cardinals had sixty six points to spare at the final siren . Despite having most of the play on its forward line Whitefriars, because of marked inaccuracy, was only able to defeat St. Bernards by twenty seven points.

Ivanhoe forfeited to Ormond & Caulfield Grammarians had the bye.

UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Old Paradians Purple led Monash Blues all day and built a three quarter time lead of thirteen points into a winning margin of thirty five points . Old Brighton made Aquinas realise the task ahead of them this season when the home side ran out winners by sixty two points after a fairly high scoring game . St . Kevins marked their return to Under 19 football with a huge victory by one hundred and twenty eight points over newcomers Old Essendon whose players also learned the task ahead of them this season . The much vaunted Hampton Rovers side proved their publicity no idle boast when they convincingly defeated De La Salle Gold by seventy one points. Inaccuracy prevented Parkside making their game against Williamstown a closer contest . The home side were able to win the game by sixty five points mainly as a result of Parkside's inaccuracy.

Preview of Round 2 to be played April 16, 1988 G SECTIO N Bloods at home should prove too strong for Collegians while at home Old Haileybury should be strong enough to take the points against Marcellin . The De La Salle versus Monash Whites game should prove an interesting contest, I favour MOnash Whites largely because of their greater depth of available players . St . Bernards must be favoured to defeat Kew although the small Kew ground may hinder St . Bernard's movement of the ball .

Old Scotch travel to POrt Colts who are unknown quantity in 1988 . Given last week's results I favour the more settled Old Scotch team to win again today. Old Melburnians on the strength of their round 1 form are m y selection to win today against Bulleen Templestowe .

H SECTIO N Long standing rivals Old Xaverians & St . Kevins meet today. Although St . Kevin's form is an unknown quantity I favour Old Xaerians to win today largely on the strength of their form last week and on the Club's depth of talent . State Bank play GV9 on Oval 4 . The Bank sides are always difficult to defeat at home and given GTV's inaccuracy at home last week, their forwards could find difficulty kicking accurately in the Albert Park winds .

State Bank should win . A confident Therry journey to Richmont Central whose opening to the season was inauspicious . I am confident Therry will in again today . Old Geelong will be at home to Balaclava for what could be a closely contested match . Although Old Geelong's form is unknown they would have have to produce a great deal to defeat Balaclava whose opening form was not too good . With no great confidence I select Old Geelong . Powerhouse journey to CBC St . Kilda with the daunting prospect of facing another St. Kilda display of power. I am in no doubt that CBC St . Kilda will win this game clearly.

UNDER 19 SECTION 1 Two of last week's losers Old Haileybury & Collegians meet today . While neither side has much form to recommend it, I select Old Haileybu ry largely because of its home ground advantage . De La Salle Blue welcome University Blues form the game between two of last week's winners . I select University Blues whom I believe have shown the better 1988 form . Marcellin await Melbourne High School Old Boys for a game in which both sides will be striving to attain their first 1988 points . At home I fancy Marcellin will prove strong enough to win . Therry journey to Bundoora to meet Old Paradians Green on the grassy Garv ey Oval . This will be a big test for Therry as the Paradians are a strong side who are always difficult to defeat at home. I expect a close contest and favour the Paradians to win narrowly. Old Xaverians when judged on last week's results should be easily able to defeat Bulleen Templestowe and I select them to do so.

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 Banyule journey east to Whitefriars whom David Hill will have schooled in the art of accurate kicking . I suspect Whitefriars will be able to win this contest . St . Bernards at home are my selection to defeat Old Melburnians .

University Blacks at home are my selection to defeat the young Ormond side. Old Scotch journey to Albert Park to meet Caulfield Grammarians . Old Scotch should be able to win this game . At home I expect CBC St . Kilda to defeat an unsettled Ivanhoe and thus give former star player Simon Meehan his first victory as a non-playing coach .

Best story of the week came from Old Xavs Treasurer Carl Nunan who reports that the Club had a veru sccuessful lunch prior to the U19 flag unfurling performed with grace and style by the coach's wife Bernadatte O'Neil . 'A' Section Umpires were J .Smith, R .Tracey, W.Henry, T.Flanery, P.Wiseman, C .Mead, J .Horwood, B.Goodman, C.Willis and D .Dodds. (Wayne Henry & Peter Wiseman are the only survivors - ed .)

Old Paradians (B Section) held off a strong finish

by Uni Blacks to win by 11 points, 13 .19 to 12 .14 with best players, PWood, Gleeson, Considine, (O .P.) & Pattinson (5 goals), Clarke & Curtis (Uni Blacks) .

Michael Butler (record game player at Marcellin 207 games) was appointed coach of his old club replacing Peter O'Donohue who had retired on Doctor's advice.

AJAX congratulated Barry Markoff on his 200th game with the club, during which he played in every grade from E to A . Barry is also well-known as author of the book "The Road to A Grade" .

"Man about Amateur Football" David Dressing had been appointed coach of AJAX .

Peter Fox also reached 200 games with North Brunswick and capping a great career as a player and administrator of the club, was now playing alongside his son Craig, in the Seniors .

Brothers Michael and Hen ry Ritterman were opposing captains with St . Bernards lined up against AJAX .

Uni Blues, 27 points up at the last change, survived a strong final term 6 goal burst by Ormond to win by one point, 15.14 to 15 .13. Stars were Yeo, Wood, Angel (Uni Blues) & Smith, Morris, Tonkin, Jackson (now in 1988, rover with Melbourne) (Ormond) .

Best were Crooks, Wilson, Power (North) and Moran, Pearce, Logan (Ormond) .

Caulfield Grammarians put in a Great second half after trailing Uni Blues by 10 points at half time, kicking 18.15 to 5.3 McNicol, Voyage, (5), S.McLaughlin, P.McLaughlin, Griffiths, & Morfett were Best for victors .

Old Paradians reported on farewell dinner given by club to John Booth, player 1957 to 1964 and coach 1966 to 1972 .

New team St. Kilda CBCOB received good wish telegrams for their first match from Laurie & Kevin Mithen, Peter Breachley, Don Williams, Terry Mountain, Frank Dunin, Brian Walsh, Brian Moloney, Geoff Feehan & Allan Killigrew (past pupils prominent in League ranks) . Coach was Joe Sheehan, captain of Ormond's 1950 'A' Section premiership team . Popular UHSOB captain Jack Kalaf, in his last game before going overseas, starred

with five goals in the club's big win over South Melbourne City.

40 YEARS AG O 'A Section umpires were Creighton, Gamble, Walsh, Jennings & Wilkins .

A Section Football by Peter French

Ormond bounced back strongly following an opening round loss, to trounce Collegians by 93 points in a very one sided affair. The'Monds spearhead Paul Schuhkraft displayed good form kicking 8 goals and Scott Taylor dominated the ruck . Two of Ormond's better players were Stuart Carboon & Andrew Jobling to the delight of those at Ormond and no doubt Stu and~Andrew! The Lions can thank centre half-back Richard Schober, David Hoyle & Andrew Wright that the margin was not greater .

No rt h trailed Uni Blues by 22 points at half time after a very even second quarter but were then swamped by a 7 goal third term . Jason Jones another from last year's Under 19s had a great duel with No rt h's Rohan Atkinson, John Kanis & Paris Aristotle continued their good form and for North half back flankers Paul Booth & Mark Malone were strong in defence. ~* * Despite six changes in the winning line up of Round 1 Marcellin trailed De La all day and was never in the hunt . De La's defence was far too good and the win was quite a tonic to the club following the loss through injury of stalwarts Mick Deveson & 1988 Captain Ga ry Connolly. old Paradians joined Old Xaverians as the only unbeaten teams following a strong win - 53 points ever St. Bernards.

The Considine B ro thers were busy ballgetters, Brian Grills held sway in the ruck and Dominic Howard now with his third VAFA club had a reasonable debut with 3 goals . For St . Bernards Kevin & Mark Mahady were under notice as were Andrew Nathan & John O'Connell .

Old Scotch were put under great pressure by Old Xavs. as their 16 behinds might suggest Xavs . cantered home after a solid first half, to win by 55 points and Mick Atkins who appears to have lost a stone since last year. Bill Denton is another to have trimmed down and he was often under notice with delightful kicking to position . Greetham & Peter Curtain were also prominent as were Brown, Smith & Lloyd for Scotch .

Now to today's games - The Match of the day will be played at the University between the Blues & Ormond .

Both suffered defeat in the opening round and both won handsomely last Saturday . I've seen them both this year and at home I like the Blues. They have young Jason Jones in good form and his clash with Scott Taylor will be a highlight . Simon Macauley & Geoff Allen are busy on ball players whilst Kanis, Banks & Gust should give the Blues the edge across the cente . Schuhkraft & Carboon will present problems for Longmire & Schlict but with Aristotle who could well 'mind' Jobling in such good touch and Holmes & Mclnnes as focal points up forward I believe the Blues will win .

In other games Old Xaverians will make it three in a row against Collegians at the Trott and De La Salle may be too sharp for No rt h at Elsternwick Park tomorrow .

Old Scotch at home to Old Paradians are hardly bristling with confidence and Paradians are odds on to score again . In the replay of the B Section Grand Final disappointing St . Bernards are at home to Marcellin who from all reports were pretty woeful last week . At Keilor I'm tempted to go for the Saints but Marcellin's form a fortnight ago suggests they're closer to a second win than St . Bernards ig to it first . Coach John Fisher advises that the Training Squad for the A .A .F.C . Carnival to be played in LAUNCESTON from JUNE 12-19 will be announced shortly and training will commence at ELSTERNWICK PARK on WEDNESDAYS and SUNDAYS early in May .

Selectors have been out and about even at practice matches and require players "committed to the cause" .

The opening match will be played against W .A . on Queen's Birthday, June 13th which means players will only miss 4 working days .

Well publish the training squad as soon as it is announced .

The Sist Report on B Section

I received some flak over selections this week . Jus to let you know I'll leave that to Peter . French . I'm second last ;n the footy tipping at work and what with Blacks I'm not all that keen to put my head on the chopping block .

Obviously Blacks surprised everyone with their good team win on Saturday. Despite the five changed and a much improved performance they still need swabbing! In windy conditions at Elsternwick Park Blacks led by only 7 points at half time . A good last half by Blacks kicking 7 goals to Fawkners 2 saw them run out comfortable winners . The Blacks backline was strong and ensured that ball was kept in attack . Despite a good performance from Fawkner coach Stephen Buckley did team did not follow suit and did not have the answers in the second half . Unfortunately for Blacks - Nick Heath may be sidelined with an injury for a few weeks .

Speaking of the Heath Family, Nick's younger brother Rod was instrumental in Bulleen-Templestowe's good wir over Ivanhoe. Bulleen-Temp. started well and jumped Ivanhoe to lead by 46 poin ts at half time . However to Ivanhoe's credit, the younger brigade fought back and kicked 9 goals to Bulleen-Temp's 11 in the second half .

The Therry-Caulfield game was a one sided affair with Therry leading all day. Therry's home ground advantage helped them make better of the windy conditions . State player Paul Matton was sure to have impressed selectors with his 6 goals and well played game . Caulfield would be pleased that Nalder has returned from O/S. He hac a good game along with Cooney and Harns .

Kew handed out another thrashing . Is it just the University sides who are overawed by Kew? The test will come today in what will surely be a great game between Therry and Kew. But back to last week, Monash found Kew's teamwork and persistence too much on the day. The pleasing thing for Kew is that in the two games so far they have always had plenty of options around goals . With Haralambopoulos, Busittil, Lord and Cavanagh all good for 3 or 4 goals each . Monash on the other hand were unable to push forward, Captain Andy McGregor who played well will be hoping that this was only a one off, as Blacks did .

The Parkside Trinity game was a close affair with Trinity kicking themselves out of it . They had a number of set opportunities 20-30 metres out which went begging . This together with Sansonetti's great performance at CHB, taking mark after mark saw Prkside pick up the 4 points . A very frustrating start to the season for Max Trotter Parkside will be keen to get another win against Blacks today . Both have had shaky starts and this result will be very important to both sides.

Other bits and pieces - with Tom Johnston getting on the Executive, new appointments have been made at Parkside Alby Bolger is now President and Perce Sherlock will be secretary . All the best for the year. Finally two lots of congratulations - one to my brother on kicking 6 goals with Balaclava - but keep John out of these scruffles! And to Rick Frazer - ex-Marcellin player who is now coaching Blacks Reserves . Blacks Reserves had their first win on Saturday - he's already been tagged supercoach! There's a long way to go yet fellas!! !

Southa's C Section Selection s

Only the "Haileybury factor" blotted my selection copybook but Banyule opened the other eye with a most impressive display of running football . Winning margins continued to be large and all but one of last week's victors repreated the dose second time around .

Having personally seen Banyule win and Balaclava lose it is hard to see the visiting team open their account at Warringal Park today. Legge typifies the Yule's running play, but most importantly their efforts are of a collective nature. Balaclava must be desperate after two home losses and problems kicking with the draught (south-easterly not Carlton) in the third quarter . Last-quarter mistakes against St . Kilda CBC were also costly, keeping full-back Stewie Withers busy, which he could be again today.

Old Melburnians continued their iimpressive form with a big win on a small ground .

Andy Witts was again to the fore, along with th big men . Rohan Brown capped his day with a 60 metre torpedo goal, Rick Pizarski gave a classic performance at full-back, and six players kicked three goals or more . OM's will look to repeat last week's second and third-quarter seven-goal blitzes which won them the game . Old Haileyburians looked like tortoises compared to Banyule and will need to lift their pace on the Cordner Oval's wide flanks . The Blood's disposal, especially by foot, must also improve before their bubble can be reinflated . Being in Sydney today I feel safe to momentarily desert the bandwagon and tip OMs .

The winless Melbourne High play at Thomastown, who are in the same predicament . Even OMs were impressed by the High's physical strength and marking power, whilst Thomastown chased Old Brighton most of the day.

The `towns Claude Cedro put in a big performance and today the three Fellows b ro thers, Tony, David & Crhis will be reunited in the seniors, David returning from injury . Although the home side failed to kick a goal with the wind in the third quarter last week, they might just sneak home today in the closes match of the round .

Old Ivanhoe's rugged reintroduction continues . Captain coach Laurie Stretton is till under-manned and under suspension, but his team at least held their own in a lack-lustre second half against St . Kevins . Old Brighton do the travelling today, but if Mark Sarau's generalship and the key forwards' good performances continue they should return to the beach with four points .

Finally the two "Saints" meet at Murrumbeena . St . Kilda CBC have set a fierce pace early in the season, with centreman Charlie Capiron in quite special form . Riddell was frustrated by the crowd and poor kicking at Balaclava, but durable Warrnambool recruit Mick Strewth has settled in well . Eleven goals in the final (40 minute) quarter of a game which finished well after 5 .00 p.m . is no mean effort .

St . Kevins may have a few tactical surprises up their sleeve just ask Leo Cro han, who kicked five goals before half-time and was rewarded with a place on the back-line for the remainder of the game! Bruce Edwards has returned from Melbourne and along with ruckman Ha rtley Stone was the catalyst for the Skevvies' second quarter which conquered Old Ivanhoe . Away from home they may miss their Simpson Constructions goal post pads, but the real reason for their loss in the day's biggest game will be that CBC are too good - perhaps for °anyone at this stage?

100 UP AT ROVERLAN D All at Hampton Rovers congratulate Kyle `Tramhead' Ivey who today plays his 100th game for the Club.

Kyle first played with the Rovers in 1982 and has developed into a strong, robust ruckman/centre half forward . Some of Kyle's highlights are winner of the Most Consistent Award, member of the Reserves 1984 Premiership team and this year as Captain of the Reserves . Well done "Tram" the club looks forward to many more games from you .

100 GAMES TO ORMOND ROVE R All at Ormond congratulate Andrew Mehrten on playing his 100th game for the Club last week.

After starting his senior career at De La Salle Andrew joined Ormond in 1982 and has since developed into a very courageous and desperate rover . He is a very respected and popular player with not only those as Ormond but at other VAFA Clubs .

Well done "Eggshell" and congratulations on achieving your 100 milestone .

D Section notes by Chris Rowston

Playing Football for the love of it, is what Amateur Football is all about and there is no better example than Colin Ericksen from Old Mentonians . Colin pulled on the boots in the two's last Saturday for his 297th game and from what I saw there's still plenty of games to come from those old bandy legs of his - Well played Colin .

Last week saw Hampton Rovers continue their good form with a strong win over Old Mentonians playing well into the wind the Rovers had good players in McKellar, Melenjak & Rogerson . The visitors pressed hard in the last quarter, but lacked good disposal and not reading the play well enough wilted against a determined Rovers side BEST for OMs were Dinosciacca, Bournon & Sly .

The sign of a good side, is to win the close ones, and Elsternwick showed they have plenty to prove this year when they got up in the last quarer against West Brunswick . Inspired by the injured Rosewarne, Elsternwick had good players in Farrington, A . Contan, Christie & Rusell . They can go into todays match of the day against Hampton Rovers full o confidence . West Brunswick made my tipping look pretty ordinary - I can only improve, best players being J.Jackson, Kirk & Casley.

In harsh and windy conditions Preston gave a superb display of disciplined football . A determined effort, lead

by Brydson ( 5 goals) Richardson & O'Brien were far too strong for Bulleen United, who tried hard, best being Morley & Empey .

The highlight for No rt h Brunswick against Old Camberwell was the fine performance of centre half forward Dean Demorton kicking 7 goals, together with good performances from Grimaldi & Briffa. For Old Camberwell Inkstr Mitchell & Neate were their better players . In a gutsy cross wind North showed too much determination and ran away in the last half to post their first in for the season .

A close encounter up to half time saw State Bank with the aid of the wind in the tird term use strong direct kicking and constructive handball to give the visitors an excellent win over AJAX, best players for State Bank, Gniel, Aumont & Matherson whilst for AJAX, R . Friedman, Kausman & Berman tried all day .

To todays round of games - who to put the Kiss of Death on ?

I fancy OLD ESSENDON will have worked out their problems of last week and, at home, end Powerhouse's unbeaten record . Old Geelong in form should be able to keep UHSOB as the only side without points on the premiership table. The relatively near neighbours, Peninsula & Heatherton and on the form displayed last week, Peninsula should score comfortably . Brunswick, on the rebound, clash face up to Whitefrian;, also reboudning, out in Donvale . This is new territory for the Brunswick boys and even though it will be a very tough job, I think that the sting of defeat at home last week will be enough for the Red & Whites to sneak through .

Sunday provides all other E Section coaches, selectors etc . the opportunity to do a bit of spying on AQUINAS & St . Bedes at Elsternwick Park . This should be an excellent game and all E Section should be encouraged to drop in and have a look .

Good luck to all teams and I await the results this week with interest (and fingers crossed) my tip for Sunday's game - St . Bedes to win - no reasons, the coin came up heads . Oh, I almost fogot, .

A 'ook at E Section by John Palme r Well, last weeks results certainly confounded me and severely dented my aspirations to become a successful tipster . Only one correct - and in that game the 8 goal margin was much higher than expected . I forecasl a close game between Heathe rton & U.H .S.O.B . I guess that sort of form explains why I've never been within a bulls roar of the Office tipping contest but things can only improve .

St . Bedes used their home town knowledge to send Old Essendon home without the points and maintain their 'unbeaten' record . Old Geelong again used the Como Oval to advantage by scoring a comfortable 27 point victory over Aquinas . It is a daunting prospect to walk into the huge Como spaces for the first time and visitors need to be very fit to see the game out successfully. Heatherton with accurate kicking registered the highest score for the round in easily account for UHSOB. Powerhouse also maintained their 'unbeaten' record by taking the points against Whitefriars at Albert Park in convincing style .

The closest encounter for the day saw the visitors, Peninsula, out-run and out-play Brunswick to win by 5 points . Peninsula obviously took my comments of last week to heart and decided there are most pleasurable things in football than after match socialising . Namely 4 points for winning - a valuable lesson for ALL clubs .

Umpires Corner by Ron Lippold Peter Wiseman must have it worked out when it comes to paperwork after the game . At Parkside last week he pulled out an envelope with a 23 cent stamp on it . Been a while has it Peter! ?

One large goal umpire cannot stand on his feet, keeps on falling over, must be the haircut Mike?

Congratulations to Roy Tuck on his first A Grade game in the goals last week . Nice to see some personality back in the game . Roy is a top bloke, loves his football and deserves his promotion .

Don't forget that we have a very hard working social committee and they need your support .

Most of the players and umpires are adapting well to the new rules, despite there being more than one . Good to see.

What isn't good to see is the state of some of the umpires change rooms . Come on fellers, we love the game as much as you do and don't really deserve to be changing on top of the ground marking equipment etc .

Nice to have a visitation from an old A Grade Grand Final Umpire, John `Ang ry ' Horwood . He's enjoying retirement but still gets 'twitches' when watching footy .

Down the gurgler last week with my tipping - badly let down by the Reds, the A rtists and the Har ry Trotters who each succumbed to the fine but blustery conditions, leaving us with a 5-2-5 scenario after two rounds .

In the big match at Brearley Reserve (incidentally Cr. Murray Gavin, Mayor of Coburg, rang during the week to protest at my description of Brearley as postage-stamp size) St. Andrews licked Doveton to the tune of nine goals . There was nothing in it at half-time but the Sainters scored six goals into the breeze in the third stanza to put the issue beyond doubt . The Sainters' forward line boasts regular snag-baggers such as Neville Taylor ( 6), Ter ry Wilson ( 5) & Tommy Harper (3) who play an interesting merry-go-round in order to put the opposition minders off their game . Doveton needs to regroup after what was a lack lustre performance against a side boosted by the recruitment of several young players from the now extinct Coburg Amateurs .

In other matches, FITOB bounced back strongly to take the points from Eltham by 4 goals but the A rt ists showed enough to indicate they are not far away from a win ; the same could be said for Uni Reds who kept in touch with a strong-marking and hard-running Old Carey until orange time; Williamstown's normal accuracy let them down which allowed ANZ to get within 3 goals, but the "Bankers" would have been pleased with their improvement from Round 1 ; The "Clays" struggled against St . Leonards but two out of two is hard to criticize - their test comes this week ; La Trobe have begun the season well and had the Harry Trotters suffering withdrawal symptoms at Lakeside .

Player of the Round : The young and courageous St . Andrew's utility Jamie Tatner who blitzed the Doves, and epitomised the new sparkle in the Sainters' play-on style of football .

It was a proud moment for all at Geelong when Mrs . Prue Fidge wife of the President, unfurled the 1972 B Section premiership pennant, which had taken them into A Section for the first time in 23 years .

Lowest scoring team for the day was Old Xaverians (D) who could only manage 41 points to Old Melbournains, 23.17.155. Rudd, Weir & Collier were stars for O .M .s.

20 YEARS AGO - 196 8 Keith Harris played his 200th game for Alphington to be the first in the club's history to do so .

Jim Fidge was elected to fill a vacancy on the Execuive Committee caused by the death of Harry Heathershaw. Uni Blues 18.15, outclassed Collegians, 8.13, best for the victors were Macaw, Moran (6 goals) & Callcott .

In E Section, ANZ Bank, 19.23 .137, "kicked the sweep" against Rese rvoir Old Boys 5.6.36, while in C Section Old Geelong, 19 .15.129 ( Laws 7 goals) overwhelmed St . Bernards OC 12 .11 .83 .

A belated "well-done" goes to Old Haileyburians' rover, GARY MARCH, who played his 50th game for the club in last year's final round . "Marchy", also known as "Gonz" or "Wally" has contributed enormously since joining the club in 1984, playing mainly in the firsts as a running player onn the ball or in the centre . He has also played a major role in rejuvenating the club's social life . notably through the now-legendary Cocktail Nights - tonight's version B the Mexican variety.

Marchy has probably worn more different jumper numbers than anyone else in the Club's history . He's settled on 7 this year, which follows 16, 42, 28 and 62 - at least there should be no trouble picking his Tattslotto numbers '

It is almost impossible to describe how much Forbsy will be missed except to say it will be a lot . MONASH BLUES NEWS Congratulations to `Dan the Man' Carman who played his 100th game on Saturday against Caulfield .

When Dan first came to the Club he was thin, and scrawny and had red hair . However Dan surprised everybody when he suddenly grew into the giant centre half-back that he is now. Described by the coach as having courage to the point of being foolhardy. Dan managed to live with that compliment, and continues to dominate at centre half-back . Congratulations Dan .

I'ersonality Pars TWO 50's AT A .N .Z. All at ANZ congratulate CHRIS "RAMBO" EDWARDS and NEIL "RACK" WALSH on playing their 50th games for the club last week against St . Andrews . Rambo has always been a detrmined and dedicated player for our club and it is a credit to his ability that most of his 50 games have been played in the senior side as a tough and uncomprising backman culminating in him winning our most "Determined Player Award in 1986".

Rack has been around longer than Chris and if not for his absences would have been approaching 100 games instead of 50. Last year after returning to the club he finished off the season by being the runner up to the Best and Fairest in the Reerves . This year through his dedication, Neil has been appointed Captain of the Reserves and had the pleasure of leading them to a victory in his 50th game .

We as a club congratulate both Rambo and Rack on this milestone in their careers and hope they will stay with the Zedders for many more to come.

50 TO "CAPPER" AT ANZ .

Everyone at ANZ congratulate Paul "Capper" Boyle on playing his 50th game for the Zedders toda against Williamstown .

Caps has been the life of our club since joining some 4 years ago, his exploits off the field far exceeding his exploits on the field . So much so, that the telephone in our rooms has been renamed the Capper phone.

On the field Paul has been an excellent and consistent player for the club proven by his Best and Fairest Award for the Reserves in 1985 . He has been a regular Senior Player since . Much to the chagrin of the Management and Staff of the Chevron Hotel, Paul has in the last week announced his engagement to the lovely Carmen . To them both, and also to Paul today, all our best wishes and congratulations .

50th FOR BRUNSWICK CAPTAI N The first game for this year saw Brunswick Captain CAMERON STEVENS record his 50th game for the Club. "NORM" started his career in 1984, missed 1985 (unfortunately) re-joined in 1986 and has been a consistently good player ever since. Starting as a back line player NORM has now progressed to the forward line and is still turning in excellent performances . Appointed as Captain in 1987 his ledership and determined will to win are valuable assets for our Club. He always gets involved in club activities and I'm told his contribution at selection on Thursday nights are most welcome.

50 GAMES AT ST. KILDA To senior players at St . Kilda CBOC celebrate their 50th games for the club. Mark ( Swampy) Lake has been an excellent team player since he came to the club and his determined, no-fuss play has earned several awards, including B & F runner-up in 1987.

Adam ( AB) Brandwood, a dashing defender, has managed to successfully combine his football and racing interests and looks set for a good year in '88 .

Weel done, Mark and Adam, and we look forward to many more games from you both .

100 GAMES AT MHSOB Every Football Club, especially Melbourne High School Old Boys, has its share of personalities and surely none would be more notable than the legendary "Pig" ALAN ATCHISON, who this Saturday, finally plays his 100th game for our Club against Old Melburnians. Alan loves playing in front of a large crowd and the mere fact that our Club will be holding our first Supporters Luncheon for 1988 with an expected bumper crowd had little to do with the day that Alan chose for this important milestone .

Alan has been a tremendous clubman over the years, virtually right from his first senior game which our reliable record book tells me was against Coburg back in 1980 up until the present time . Alan has served faithfully on the General Committee over the years filling the important role as Club Treasurer on 2 occasions which really puts his accounting brain to the test . Miraculously the books balanced !

Alan's involvement, not only on the field as a gutsy centreman, sharking opposition attacks and continuously driving the ball into our forward line, but also in the social arena as a familiar face at the bar on Selection Nights and at our famous Pink Flamingo Disco Nights, is now a legend at our Club . Well done Alan, we love your involvement !

150 GAMES AT OLD TRINITY Congratulations to John Adgemis on reaching the 150 games milestone . "The Beachball" whose football skill is easily exceeded by his girth has been a stalwart at Old Trinity for many years . John is the type o player all clubs need, he is a tireless worker on and off the field, making many valuable contributions to the club on the committee and playing level . This year in recognition of his service, experience and most probably (middle) age John has been appointed Captain of the Reserve side. Aain from everyone at the club, well done John and may you continue to roll along .

50 GAMES UP AT AJA X Everyone at AJAX and bookies everywhere congratulate OFER KOMORNIK on reaching 50 games fo r the Club today against State Bank . We've all been happy to see OFER really improve in the ruck, where he gives away kicks to his oponents but still uses his body well to win tap-outs. He also marks well around the ground and shows a lot of strength . He's not a bad kick either.

OFER 21, is a great clubman who, if he didn't play footy, would be terrorising betting rings and casinos everywhere .

Once again OFER, well done on reaching 50 ames, andwe'd all like to bet on your reaching another 50 . ** * Congratulations to AJAX's Redisent Rabbi, BRAHAM GOLDBERG who plays his 50th game today against State Bank . He joined us in 1985 and played in the Reserves usually on a wing or as a rover. In 1986 he snuck in a couple of senior games and during last years debacle he managed to cement a place in the Seniors .

If Braham could increase his pace he'd be a star because he has great skills and a good football brain and perhaps his biggest challenge in 1988 is to prove that he is the best Goldberg at the Club . At 22 he is the oldest .

Well done BRAHAM from everyone at Ajax . We hope you play a 'pearler' today . ** * DAVID MARKS plays his 50th game this week for AJAX . Marksy has come up through the Little League and although he's as skinny as a rake, he has an uncanny ability to kick goals . Some of his goals have to be seen to be believed . Marksy is very clever at reading the play and it is unfortunate that injuries have somewhat decimated his career.

Let's hope he has an injury-free year and is part of the club for many years to come .

MARK SILVER PLAYS 50 FOR AJA X Mark Silver played his 50th game for AJAX last week in the Reserves against Old Camberwell . "Gunner" joined us in 1984, another product of MT. Scopus College. Mark is one of the best marks at the Club but unfortunately has been unable to win a regular senior game although he did play several senior games last year.

Everyone at AJAX congratulated you GUNNER and hopes that you can be part of a successful year at the club this year .

Jamie Golds plays his 100th game today, against De La Salle . Personality Pars FIGHTING COMEBACK Many people speak of the amazing comeback made by teams in the past, but THERRY U19's 9 point victory over Bulleen-Templestowe must rate with the best. Trailing by 45 points at 3/4 time, Therry players went dejectedly over to their coach to be addressed for the last time. In a quietly spoken speech to his team, the coach reminded each individual that the game was not over and still could be won if players believed in themselves and continued to persevere .

The effect of these words was just the inspiration THERRY needed as the kicked 8 goals to Bulleen's Nil in the last term . This courageous performance emphasises the unity and spirit of the side and each player deserves full credit for their efforts to fight back and win when they seemed to be in a hopeless situation .

UNFURLING OF 1987 U19's PREMIERSHIP PENNANT Prior to the commencement of the THERRY v BULLEENTEMPLESTOWE match thew 1987 U19 Flag won by Therry was unfurled by Mr . Reg . TWO HALF TONS AT BLACKS Congratulations to Nick `Tunners' Tunbridge & Bruce `Digger' Warren who played their 50th game at Blacks last Saturday.

The high flying "Tunners" joined the Blacks from Ballarat in 1985. As a regular member of the seniors he can usually be seen following up a "specky" with a raking left foot kick at goals . In 1986 he was Chairman of the Blacks and he contributed an enormous amount of work to the Club .

Also a Ballarat boy "Digger" joined Blacks in 1984 .

Although taking a little longer to reach his half ton, Digger has not been short on his contribution around the Club. He has been on the committee over the past few years and has been M .C. for the last two infamous Blacks Reviews . Digger was also a member of the 85 Champion Intrvarsity team .

In 1986 he was Blacks leading goalkicker. All in all a great all round performance from Digger and Tun Eh I'm sorry I mean Nick!! !

PersÂŽnality Par s D .E .V .O PLAYED HIS HUNDREDTH FOR ST. BERNARD S Mick has been around the club for many years and played his 100th as Captain Coach of G Section last week . Mick also captained the St . Bernards U19 (3) side in 1981 . Mick is proving to be a fine leader for the club and his patronage of the Lincolnshire Arms has resulted in increased sponsorship for the Club in 1988 . One of Devo's greatest worries is coming to grips with the interchange bench, he usually has to pull himelf off to give other players a run . All the best for the rest of the season from all the players "coaches" and supporters of St . Bernards .

150 GAMES TO ZEDDERS COAC H All at ANZ congratulate senior coach Michael Szeitz who todays plays his 150th game for the Zedders against St . Leonards .

Michael has been an ornament around the place for almost 10 years now and it is due to his hard work and dedication that he today joins a select group of players who have achieved this milestone for our club .

It has not been easy for Mick along the road to this achievement, some of us remember when he first came down to ANZ he could not even get a game in the Reserves but through persistence he has moved through the ranks to be our coach .

During his career Michael has finished Runner-up in our Senior Best & Fairest some 4 times, but probably the highlight for him was FINALLY winning that elusive B&F after the 1986 season, it certainly was thoroughly deserved .

Off the field MICK has served with distinction as Social Secretary always attends club functions and encourages everyone else to attend as well .

In his most important role as coach of a struggling club his enthusiasm is unbounding and we hope it starts to rub off on all of us as we endeavour to improve our position on the ladder .

Congratulations Michael from all associated with ANZ, good luck today, we're all behind you and feel sure we'll repay you in the best possible way by coming home today with a resounding victory.

100 GAMES TO ELSTERNWICK SECRETARY Congratulations to Peter Ballantyne, secretary of Elsternwick Amateur F .C . on playing his 100th game last week .

On the playing field, Peter's enthusiasm, team spirit and commitment have been valuable assets for a number of years in both the Senior and Reserves teams . BALLA's tally of games would be much greater but for four years spent at St . Kilda F.C . as Finance Director . Off the field, the EAFC has gained immeasurably from Peter's VFL experience and he has given great service in his two years as Secretary .

We hope that Peter's expanding business interests and impending fatherhood dont place too many restrictions on his playing and administering activities in the future !

Peter is a credit to the EAFC and to amateur football, we congratulate him on reaching 100 games .

50 GAMES TO OLD PARADIAN All at O .Paradians congratulate David Per ryman on playing his 50th game for the club on 16th April 1988, against St. Bernards. David joined the club in 1984, and was unfortunate in not reaching this milestone earlier due to injuries, but has been a good clubman and a great contributor whenever he had the opportunity on the field . We wish David best of luck in achieving his next milestone at the Club, at a much faster pace than reaching his 50th game .

100 GAMES TO JOHN QUINLA N St . Kevins Old Boys Legend `Pu tty Nose' QuinIan plays his 100th game today against CBC . Jack joined the club in 1980 and played in the clubs first U19 side . From there he developed to become a regular member of the senior team, on the forward line where his skills created many a scoring opportunity.

As Jack's skills have further developed he has now reached the point where he can successfully play on the backline.

Jack is noted for his early attendance to training and any club social function and for his good natured attitude towards the men in white . All at SKOB wish him good luck and applaud his efforts .

CHAPS 100t h At West Brunswick, Garry Chappell will be playing his 100th game this week. Better known to everyone as "CHAPS", he started his playing career with West in 1981 and in the last 8 seasons he has played in many positions, dominantly in the back line or at centre half forward . In 1986 and again this season Chaps is the Captain Coach of the Reserves. Being the captain-coach we have now seen, and come to appreciate Chap's ability in coaching and captaincy - not just as the clubs entertainer !

"DOMMO" MAKES 250 Todays game sees Hampton Rovers legend Dominic Devola play his 250th game for the Club . Dom started with the Club in 1974, with the U19 side and quickly developed his reputation as a fullback of some note .

As the years and the pounds wore on, Dom moved to the opposite end of the ground, and has been the reserves leading goal kicker every year since . Leading the C Reserves competition goal kicking in 1986.

Some of Dom's credits are 1986 Reserves Best & Fairest, Runner-up 81 Reserves, Captained the reserves side to victory in the 'infamous' 1979 Premiership side against St . Kevins . He also runs some very long Pleasant Sunday Monings . Dom is in the unusual position of not only being popular at Rovers, but is undoubtedly the most popular player among his opponents . All at Rovers congratulate DOM, as I'm sure all his contemporaries do. "THE LEGEND LIVES ON ".

KEW MILESTONES Kew Captain Coach Brett Burden celebrated his 150th game with a fine display in the centre against Uni Blacks . His team mates did not let him down either and with a fine display of power football crushed the Blacks to the tune of 117 points .

Brett began with Kew U19s back in 1976, became the Captain the next year and then finished the season in the Seniors. Amongst Brett's many attributes he is a qualified VFL Level 2 Coach, has represented Queensland as a State Player in 1985 and 86 and has brought the Kew Club back to a force in the Amateurs.

Congratulations to Brett from all at Kew .

PERSONALITY PAR S Old Scotch Junior Coach Laurie Agahn praised his teams performance after half time against Old Caulfield and is looking forward to the return of injured players James Worssam, Wes Anderson, Matt McGregor and Peter Montgome ry.

As a footnote to Looking Back Round 2 - 5 years on Peter Fox now President of North Brunswick. Still turns out regularly for the Club now preferring the Reserves . Due to injuries Peter has only amassed 70 more games but is a great inspiration to the young players around the Club .

PRESTON M .B .O.B. All at Preston would like to congratulate ANDREW BRYDSON on playing his 50th game against Bulleen United . Andrew who is very quietly spoken and with his rather casual approach can be a very damaging centre half forward, to his credit won the Senior Best & Fairest (1986) . Well done Andrew.

Our Reserves Captain-Coach Phillip 'Flip' Feehan plays his 50th game today . Phil has played in our Seniors runners-up team and a couple of reserve premierships. Since joining Preston has gained much respect from all personnel around the club with his fierce will-to-win.

Also congratulations go to Alan Hunter on breaking the Club record of 261 games against Bulleen Utd .

Alan a real live wire and great clubman, amazes people at Preston how he keeps going, he has played in our four consecutive reserves premierships.

Although his wife Carmel tells me at the end of each season this is it for Alan, he keeps coming back . Top effort .

150 UP AT ST. ANDREW S All at St . Andrews would like to congratulate Gerry Vipond on his 150th game against Doveton last Saturday .

Gerry who has played for St . Andrews since the age of 8 is always a consistent performer and has given 14 years of service to the Club .

With youth on his side Gerry should be able to appear many more times in the Gold and Blue jumper and record more milestones within the Club .

Frank who has been sidelined with a back injury started playing in 1982 but is still to complete a full season .

"IT FINALLY ARRIVED " A seemingly irrepairable shoulder injury and an irresistable urge to put a football career to rest, confronted Frank Van der Peet at the end of the 1987 season, after 98 games . Happily, Frank's irrepressible wish to make 100 games for the Williamstown CYMS conquered the odds, and last Saturday, Frank played his 100th Club and Senior game . It was not without incident . Frank received a blow to he head ; had 4 stitches ; returned to the field and contributed to the Club's victory. We salute you Frank, and we are assured the second hundred is easier.

STATE BANKER REACHES 10 0 All at State Bank congratulate Charlie Kenez on playing his 100th game against AAX . Although Charlie has a small frame his big heart easily compensates for this slight drawback . Charlie is always willing to place his body between himself and the ball and continues to amaze suporters with his ability to bounce back after some bone-crushing tackles . To reach 100 games it is a tribute to Charlie's courage and dedication .

Everyone at the Bank wishes Charlie all the best in the future and salutes him on his achievement so far.

ANOTHER STATE BANKER REACHES 300 Today, Alan Pitts plays his 300th game for the State Bank . Pittsy commenced his distinguished career in 1068 and is the fourth State Banker to reach this magical milestone .

In his early days Alan was a speedy winner and was a regular member of the strong Bank sides of the early 70's . Nowadays, Alan uses his experience and guile to hold the 'H' grade's backline together, and is still able to make a significant contribution to the sides performance. Anyone who doubts his ability only has to remember back as far as last years Best & Fairest Award when Alan easily won the trophy beating many younger players in the process.

Alan's contributions to the Bank has not only been onfield . He has been a committeeman for most of his time at the Club - on both the General & Social Committees . He has always tried to help those of lesser ability than his own . He coached the reserves for three years and has always ensured that new players at the club were welcomed and not led astray by others .

I am sure that every connected with Amateur Football wish Alan all the best for today and every success in future seasons . Well done Pittsy, from all at State Bank .
