1986 is a year of great importance for the Victorian Amateur Football Association both on the domestic scene and in the area of representative football .

We welcome in particular our new Clubs St . Andrew's, St. Leonard's O .C . and Vdhitefriars O .C . who will compete in the Senior and Reserve grades of F Section and also Eltham O .C . and GTV 9 who will compete in the G Section for 1986 . The advent of G Section is of significance and it is hoped that this venture will be of considerable benefit not only to new Clubs wishing to join the VAFA on a formal basis in the near future but also to existing Clubs in providing a game each week for players where there is an excess of numbers over and above the requirements for Senior, Reserve and Under 19 Sections .

1986 will also be a great test for the VAFA in the representative games which are scheduled during this season . A Carnival to celebrate South Australia's 150th Year will take place in Adelaide in late June and early July, and i n addition the VAFA will play its Fifth Annual game in June against the V .F .A . with the score reading two all" at the present time . We welcome back Mr . John Fisheras coach of the Senior Side and assure him of the complete support of all Members of the Executive and the Association in our bid to reassert our supremacy of recent years in the representative area .

The CDEFG Section side will this year meet a team from the Monaro (Canberra) Football League as a curtain raiser to the game against the V .F.A. and the Under 19 VAFA side will also play the V .F .A ., all of these matches being scheduled for Elsternwick Park on Sunday June 8th .

We look forward to a highly successful season in 1986 for Players, Administrators and Supporters of all Member Clubs of the VAFA .

Old Scotch meet Bulleen-Templestowe at Yarra Park, a very tough initiation . Bedford has retired but Brian Hodge will not be at Collingwood and Fuller will probably be back from Richmond . Stuart Glascott, brother of David, will be a handy player .

Bulleen-Temp under Laurie Aghan has lost Harisiou and Pace back to Thomastown, Van den Driest to Mooroopna and Delanty and Delaney . But they have gained Tony Keenan from Collingwood/Melbourne - a handy ruckman and Andy Smythe .

This is possiblythe match of the day . I'll favour Barry Price's Cardinals .

Ormond meet Caulfield Grammarians at the Gunn Reserve . For Ormond Eishold is at Melbourne, Naylor has retired and Ritchie's knee will stil I keep him out . He missed the last 7 games yet still won Ormond's B & F .

For the 'Fields', Sisson has gone, Kanis is at Hawthorn and Harlock has shoulder injury. I cannot see newly promoted Caulfield winning this one against last year's Premiers .

Ivanhoe meets Marcellin in a local derby at Ivanhoe Park . Peter Gittos has gone to OLD . but Dave Boccabella returns after trying at Preston . Marcellin have luckily retained last year's side and have recruited Peter Carroll from Pakenham . The Carafas did pre-season at Carlton and Slattery is back from Hawthorn . I think Marcellin will be the only away winner this week .

Down from A Section are St. Bernard's and Old Xaverians . I think Frank Melican's Saints might edge out a strengthened Old Xaverians despite the return of Richard Armstrong from Melbourne . St. Bernard's at home .

Parkside meet a weakened Blacks without Costello and Heath (Fitzroy) . Parkside wil6have Filipovic and Pappas and should win .

Old Brighton take on Old Paradians at South Road . It is hard to see Brighton getting over the OPs with McCann from Preston, Spillane back from Melbourne and Skerrit from Collingwood . Old Paradians are big improvers .

Finally, Old Melburnians meet St. Kilda at Fawkner Park . St . Kilda CBCOC have Simon Meehan lining up aftera stint with WestTorrens . and the Southern Saints . They will be too good for Andy Risstrom's OMs who will be weakened by the retirement of ruckman Rohan Brown and the loss of Tony Witts to the Swans .

Bones was a member of the senior premiership side last year and was unfortunate not to have played his 150th game in the Grand Final .

OTFwelcomesread erstoanotherfootyseason . and reports that the VAFA has been extremely busy in the off season, teeing up new sponsors, organizing a new section to be known as G Section, arranging a match for"CDEFG" Section against the Monaro Australian Football League (A .C .T .) and amending the Reinstatement Guidelines so as to cater for more Amateur players .

The Administration will again be headed by Jim Hawkins as Chairman of the Executive and Peter French (General Manager) and Mrs. Sue Anderson (Administrative Assistant) will look after the day to day affairs of the Association .

Sir Bernard Callinan AC CMG DSO MC new Patron in Chief .

ProminentAustralian Sir Bernard Callinan was unanimously elected as Patron in Chief of the VAFA at the April meeting of Members .

Sir Bernard is a keen sports fan, being the immediate past president of the Melbourne Cricket Club and will be introduced to club personnel at the Presidents, Members and Secretaries Dinner at the Southern Cross on April 14th .

Sir Bernard's four sons have all represented the Old Xaverians in recent years .

OTF reports that the Brothers Wilts ex OM's in 1985 were both in action on the Sydney Cricket Ground in last weeks Swans v Collingwood match . Andrew was recruited to Collingwood mid 1985 and surprised a number of AmateurKnowA//swithseniorselection .Younger brother Tony who had a stint at Old Trinity and was a member of the 1984 CDEF team transferred to Sydney over the summer and lobbed at the preseason training and was selected in the Swans Reserves . Ourman in Sydney reports that both Witts went well !

25 YEARS AGO - 196 1 Ian Cleland (in 1986 an "authority on A .B .C . on lawn bowls, trotting and football and anything else he decides he knows a bit about) was appointed V .A .F .A . umpires advisor . Rumour has itthat lan got reappointed each yearbecause he sang so well at the Association's Annual Dinner - those smashing Top 40's numbers,

5 YEARS AGO - 198 1 Alex Johnson and John Dillon were elected president and chairman respectively . Life memberManson Russel retired from presidencyafter serving in that role with distinction . Despite a number of applications, no new clubs were admitted .

Sherrin footballs were the onlyapproved balls for use in senior matches ."Poach ing"committee of Messrs . Russell, Keam, Hawkins and Nathan set up to try and eradicate problem : Old Xaverians deny having approached Mr Des Tuddenham to become a playing member of their club.

Executive committee were continuing to explore all possibilities of a permanent headquarters .

There had been so much trouble at 1980 finals series with owners bringing their dogs along fora run (including Greg Fisher of Ormond with his Alsation) that the Treasurer suggested to the Executive that owners be charged $1 to bring their dogs into Elsternwick Park . Still, its family football, and what's a family without a Great Dane, or a St. Bernard, or a Doberman Pincer to play with the children !

There was a sensation to start the season when on the Friday night prior to the first game, an investigation which had taken place over several weeks, culminated in U . Blues being relegated from A Section to B Section for season 1981, due to an irregularity in circumstances concerning a permit application for a prominent U . Blues player . AJAX was promoted to A Section .

10 YEARS AGO - 197 6 Alf Keam, a man of many talents was the Amateur Footballer's A Section tipster for 1976, a new feature with other confident characters .

"B" John Bryne, " C" Alex Johnson, "D" Jim Fidge, " E" Syd Whitfield, " F" Keith Findlay, Junior 1 Norm Nugent and yes, they couldn't keep him out, Junior 2, the one and only Peter Nathan .

Alf picked Old Trinity to beat U . Blues, 1975 premier coach Gus Mitchell's St . Bernard's to do Peter O'Donohue's ( State Coach) U . Blacks, N .O .B . "always trained to the minute" against Monash Blues, Coburg and Reservoir Old Boys "a thriller" - lean to R .O .B .'s and Ormond, eager for a first up win for new coach Ian Cameron to defeat De La Salle "minus Peter Murnane" .

You might say "Alfie needed the run" - for the record, Blue annihilated O.T ., Gus did the right thing with a 31 point win, N .O .B . ( L . Murray 6 goals) too good for Monash (best player - R .

Booth), Coburg 110 points over R .O .B ., and poor "Cammie", De La swamped Ormond by 45 points. Only two out of five, Alf .

A "sour note" to start season - a record 13 players reported for an opening round .

Other notable events were that Mr . Geoff Moore of Collegians A.F .C . was awarded life membership, and Old Geelong Grammarians, desperate after finishing last in "B" Section, turned to former coach and star Noel Rundle to revitalise them in "C" section as well as be club president! !

by PETER FRENC H A new feature in the "Amateur Footballer' ' this season will be the weekly profile of a former Amateur Personality, either player, administrator or supporter. We kick off Round 1 with Ormond' s champion ALAN NA YLOR .

0. Alan, what is the outstanding memory you have after 16 years of Amateur Football A . Without doubt, the 1973 and 1986 Premierships which are obviously the highlights ?of any players career .

0 . Any other highlights ?

A . The overall highlight was being able to play football in a competition that is completely given over to the playing of football to the nth degree . I've played against teams from other competitions whose aims are either money or fighting whereas I have been priveleged to play with and against those who saw football as the priority .

0 . Who would you rate as your most difficult opponents ?

A . Early in mycareer Mick Bates of Reservoir Old Boys . Lateron Paul "The Cliff" Smith of St . Bernard's who was hard to get around and played a similar game to me .

Q. And most respected ?

A . Again Mick Bates . He really showed me what ruckmanship was all about .

Q. Which Ormond side would you rate as the best in your career ?

A . It's hard to differentiate . In 1973 1 was just a kid and lucky to be playing in a premiership side in my first senior year . In 1985 it was a family affair with so many of us out to achieve the same thing and and many of the side had all played together in junior days .

Q . What side(s) would you regard as being the best you played against ?

A . It's hard to rate - obviously De La Salle has set the standard in my career .

Q . What are your impressions of Amateur Football now and throughout your career ?

A . Early Amateur football was all I felt I could ever possibly play, but seeing the VFL today I ma y ave been able to go higher . I don t think the quality of player is as good as 10 years ago . Amateur football is all I'd ever wanted to play these days . As I said earlier it is committed football . It's a sport - something to do in your leisure time . It's not a profession although some people are living off it at VFL level . The rest of football down to the Junior competitions cannot afford to follow suit .

They have so many has beens demanding top dollar just because they've been to the League .

Q . What role if any would you like to play in football, now you've retired ?

A . Administration at Ormond . Football is Saturday and Life and I'd be happy to sweep out the rooms if asked .

Q. Finally how will you be spending Saturdays this year?

A . Watching Ormond play with my 3 year old son Timothy .

For the record Alan played 222 games for his Club . He represented Victoria at the 1985 Carnivals and against South Australia in 1975, 77 and 78 and the VCFL in 1984 . He won his Club's Best and Fairest in 1977 and 1983 .

15 YEARS AGO - 197 1 Lou Zachariah, a devoted Amateur Footballer man for years, and a particular enthusiast of Interstate and A . A . F . C . games s ucceed ed Ernest F. Atkins as President, who together with two former secretaries, Jack McCann and Geoff Moore, was appointed " Patron of the Association . " Marcellin and North Brunswick joined the Association . (V .A .F .A . general manager Peter French played on the wing in Marcellin's first game and kicked one goal - N .R .) .

Well known names among new coaches were Roger Head (Old Haileyburians), Kevin McLean (Old Ivanhoe), Paddy Walsh (St . Kevin's) and John Bennetti ( Ivanhoe).

1970 "A" premiers, Caulfield Grammarians, trailed Collegians by 2 goals at 3/4 time but put on, 9 .7 to 0 .4 to win easily. Best for the victors were Atchison (5), Clark and Lester and Crow Opie Roach (5) for Collegians .

After setting a club record by winning three successive bestand fairestawards Mick Quinlan deserved honour of appointment as captain of old Paradians .

For the second time in four years the Association hasbeenforced tovacate itscentralground, the latest blow being the loss of the St . Kilda Cricket Ground . The Association had used Olympic Park for five years after the 1956 Olympic Games but the introduction of a dog racing track decreased the size of the ground and it became too small for Australian Rules .

The following clubs did not reappear in '1966 : R .A .A.F ., Postal Institute, Beltfield, Cassie (this was a club based on a Greek brotherhood and whose equilvent in South Australia were Al Premiers in the S.A .A.F .L . in 1985), Monash Whites and Kooyong .

"A Man Called Peter", and "The Place Where I Worship" . He usually told a couple of jokes of unusual quality before he sang .
