PARADE STOP COBURG'S RUN G EE L ONG HO LD ON TO " PIP" ST. BERNARD'S BLACKS KNOCK NORTH OUT OF RU NN ING

By GEORGE McTAGGART Old Paradians' winning centre line was a big factor in their upset win over Coburg last week, bringing to an end Coburg's string of nine wins in succession.

Geelong started in great style against St . Bernard's but were hard pressed in the last quarter to win by only three points .

University Blacks trailed North Old Boys halfway through the last quarter but finished well to score by 10 points, putting an end to North's hopes of playing in the finals .

Parade opened up a 17-point lead on Coburg in the first term but it was their second quarter effort against the wind that did the damage .

They kicked 7-6 to 5-1 and were 34 points in front at the interval .

Coburg came at them in the last quarter but faded towards the finish and went down by 4 goals . Parade should have won by more, as they kicked 4-11 in the second half .

Geelong kicked 7 goals straight in the opening quarter and held St .

Bernard's for most of the second term, but St . Bernard's hit back shortly before the interval to get to within 17 points .

Geelong led by 16 points at the start of the last quarter but St. Bernard's gradually crept up to within 3 points . However Geelong held firm and won by this margin .

University Blacks had the call over North Old Boys in the first term but North's defenders stood firm in the second and held the Blacks to a 17point lead .

North attacked strongly in the third quarter and went to the front but the Blacks kicked 2 goals just before three-quarter-time to level the scores .

Blacks went to the front in the last term, but North hit back to gain a lead of 7 points .

The Blacks finished strongly however and won by 10 point's, kicking 6-6 to 5-2 in this quarter.

Caulfield Grammarians showed patches of good football against Ormond, who were never really able to take complete control of the game.

But Ormond were much too strong and won easily.

University Blues were no match for Reservoir Old Boys after the first quarter and Reservoir's 10-goal burst in the second term paved the way for a big win . Their backing-up and teamwork were too much for the Blues, and their win removed the tbreat of relegation .

There are six still in the fight for the four, with only Ormond and Coburg really safe. The composition of the four will be in doubt until the last home-and-home games next week.

New sprang a surprise in a lastminute bid to make the four, beating Old Scotch by 9 points .

Old Carey rocked De La Salle, handing out a 2-goal defeat and practically wiping out "De La's" final four hopes, and also making themselves safe from relegation .

Monash Blues beat Collegians by 5 goals, Ivanhoe inflicted a crushing defeat on Melbourne High and Old

Trinity were too strong for Power House .

Top team Old Haileybury went down to Marcellin by 9 points in a low-scoring game and these two, with Parkside, now share the lead . Parkside beat Old Brighton by 22 points and pushed them out of the four, their place going to St . Kilda CBC .

State Savings Bank's big win over LaTrobe Blacks lifted them into the four in place of Old Xaverians, who had the bye .

Old Geelong scored a narrow 4point win over AMP Society and University Reds settled LaTrobe Reds' chances when they won by 15 points, but LaTrobe's poor kicking didn't help them.

There were some upsets in Junior Section games - Coburg (third) went down by 25 points t'o Old Scotch and Monash University got into the four when they beat University Blues (second) by 19 points but' they had 19 scoring shots more than the Blues.

University Blacks made room for Monash when they succumbed to Beverley Hills by 5 goals .

In Section 2, Ivanhoe beat Hampton Scouts by more than 7 goals and Park-side nearly lost the distinction of being the only unbeaten team when they scraped home from Geelong by 5 points in a high-scoring game . Even closer was Caulfield's 1-point win over Parade.

Geelong lost their place in the four to Bulleen-Templestowe, who scored a big win over AJAX .

Off the ground, "Uncle" is one of the leaders of the club, being, very active in both- the social committee and also as vice-president of the club . Jack has not won many awards but this year he, could, go ciose° to-winning one of the most coveted . Jack, being vicecaptain of : the reserves, has, aa lot of responsibility in showing all the younger players the ropes of senior football, which he does very well . All the best, Jack .

CAPT-COACH STATE SAVINGS BANK club extends mos t heartiest congratulations to capt-coach GEOFF CA ME RON on playing his 200th game with the club's lst XVHI, only one of about four players to have reached this goal . 'Came' played his first game with the club in the reserves on April 23rd, . 1960 and graduated to the seniors on July 2nd the same year . During his illustrious career he has kicked 222 goals and finished runnerup a couple of times in the best and fairest voting . During his first year as coach he managed to steer the bank to their first premiership in 12 years . He has been an inspiration to all his team mates and we only hope he continues for many more years with the club.

By Noel Rundle 5 Years Ago Umpire's Corner featured the career of Bill Mason, from 1954 when he won Ivanhoe Juniors best and fairest after only playing 6 games before being promoted to Senior team . In 1969 Bill was then in his ninth year as an umpire .

Brian Powell, Collegians back pocket, played his 200th game in 11 seasons with the club .

Other players in the news were Graham `Lumpy' Moran, Ormond vice president, assistant treasurer and fearless back pocket player - 150 games ; and Ken Hill, Uni. Blacks ruckman, Bill Tunbridge, OGG's 100 games .

Potter (U. Blacks) topped goalkickers with 55 for the season , 150 UP TO CAULFIELD FORWARD JOHN BUTCHER played his 150th consecutive game for CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS last week . John has played most of his football at full forward and has been the leading goal kicker for Caulfield for many years .

UMPIRE'S CORNER

By Kevin McKa y "TOO MUCH BULL " This story is true, one umpire who is a sales rep . was staying overnight in Colac, being Tuesday he had promised the coach he would train whilst away in the country.

As a warm-up he decided to jog from his overnight town Colac to Coragulac distance 2 miles each way, the night Tuesday, July 23rd . Remember it? Cold, windy and wet .

Away he went right to the Coragulac sign post and started on the return run .

A local farmer turned his bull loose on our ump, who immediately turned sprinter, but the bull kept after him .

"Whistle Blower" climbed a tree on the road-side, there he was freezing cold wind nearly blowing him out of the tree and a snorting bull below and rain pouring down .

Eventually the bull "simmoed" down and our jogger returned to Colac Motel cursing all coaches, farmers and their bulls .

Umpire who is well established cricketer said "if it had been a tiger "I wouldn't have been scared" .

Ron Saunder is a former Ormond player who was a member of that club's 1950 grand final and premiership team .

Leaving Ormond Ron transferred to East Malvern Amateur Club where he was elected captain, when that club left our Amateur Association he decided to take on the job of umpire and again became most successful in this facet of our game.

Another life member of our Association Ron has been an umpire for 15 years and never misses a training night.

Ron Saunder is another of our "older Brigade" doing a fine job and with a great record of service to Amateur Football as player and umpire .

Now meet some our top panel of umpires Bill Mason - played with Ivanhoe Amateurs, North Melbourne (V.F.L .) and then became an umpire . Has umpired Carnival gam, > and final series including last year's "A tiection" grand final .

CENTURY TO ST. KILDA WINGER PETER FIELD played his 100th game fo r ST . KILDA CBOC last Saturday . Peter is having one of his best seasons at the club this year since he joined the Juniors . He has played most of his career either roving or, his present position, on the wing . Peter is a very colourful character both on the field, with his enthusiasm, and off the field, with his dress. His assets as a footballer are his overhead marking, his speed and his overall fitness . Congratulations Pete, keep up the good form .

100 UP'TO PARKSIDER PIVO T One of the most determined and brilliant footballers in C Section today reaches his hundredth game . He is PARKSIDE'S dynamic captain GRAHAM DRYDEN, who began his career at Parkside as one of the "Junior Sixty-Niners", winning the club's Junior Best and Fairest in that year . Since then he has gone from strength to strength and is now playing great football in the centre . Congratulations Graham, and may your next 100 be even better than the other .

MARCELLIN MAN REACHES CENTURY Congratulations to GAVIN WELCH of IMIARCELLIN O .C . who plays his 100th game for the club today . Gav played in the club's first game in the YCW and was a member of the '71 premiership team in F grade .

He has played mainly as a half-back flanker and has sometimes shown his skills as a centreman . Gav is known as "Eski" around the club for his habit of always having an Esky at hand in the cricket season . As well as being a very handy footballer he has proved to be a great clubman off the field . This year he is the President of the Social Committee as well as being a member of the Football Committee . Thanks for your great service Gav, and good luck for the next 100 .

Dynamic centreman JEFF BOTHE last week played his 50th game for DE LA SALLE . Jeff first played for the club in .

1971 and his tremendous skill and determination earned him our best and fairest award the following year . Jeff missed the last ten games last year to go overseas, and the first half of this season to shear sheep at Dimboola . Players and supporters congratulate Jeff on his 50th game - his efforts on the field have been of great value to the club.

Congratulations to PHIL GODFREY who plays his 50th game with POWER HOUSE today . After graduating from the juniors in 1972, he quickly established himself in the seniors, usually on the wing or roving .

A talented player, Phil can kick either foot and is an excellent mark for his size .

ANOTHER CENTURY AT ST . KILDA Another milestone is reached this wee k at ST. KILDA CBOC when our big ruckman, DENNIS DREW, plays his 100th game .

Dennis has given many opposition sides headaches because of his size and ruckwork . He has always been a great trier and clubman as can be shown by the fact that he plays football in preference to seeing his horse racing . Dennis has played many games where he has been required to ruck most of the game, which he has done admirably . Congratulations Dennis .

This season his fiery ruck play and long kicking have been one of the reasons behind the performances of the Reserves in recent matches . CENTURY TO "DE LA" DEFENDER DE LA SALLE defender KEVIN PERKINS this week makes his 100th appearance for the club . Kevin came to De La in 1969 and in both Senior and Reserve grade football, has always played with great spirit and been a keen competitor. Kevin's style of play does involve a certain amount of flair his wide sweeping turns require extended arm movements to retain balance, but these are often misinterpreted by the men in white! Congratulations on your century Kevin ; all players and supporters are most appreciative of your services to the club .

BALL BRIEF S R .O .B. PLAYER REACHES 150 RESERVOIR OL DBOYS, LAURIE McLAUGHLIN plays his 150th game for the club today. He is one of Reservoir's six players who have played in each section of the Amateurs from 'F' to 'A' . Laurie has done much for the club, being on the committee in its infantcy, and being captain and coach in 1969 . Laurie also introduced coach Laurie Aghan to the club . He has played many fine games and was runner-up for the fairest and best trophy in 1967 . Congratulations Laurie from all at Reservoir, and we are confident you will be playing for many years yet .

OLD HAILEYBURY'S MIKE PRITCHARD has at last reached his 50th game . This achievement has been considerably delayed by "Pritch's" decision to suffer appendictis early in the season and later "mobilization" to Queensland- all in the course of duty - he assures us. His return has led to a strengthening of the backline - the determination he shows sometimes exhibits a "Lethal" quality . "Pritch" has also contributed greatly off the field on both the social and general committees - he forms quite a trio with Parksie and "Cool" . Great work and congratulations from all at the club .

A.M .P . CLUB, would like to congratulate PETER PARKINSON who today plays his 50th game for the club . Peter joined the club in 1972 and has been a regular player in the first eighteen playing mainly in the ruck position . Peter plays a vigorous brand of football and this together with his accurate ruckwork and ever reliable marking in defence are his main attributes .

Ian first started playing with the club in 1963, but has had a interrupted career and it is a tribute to him that he has finally reached this milestone . Ian has played in many positions on the field, but it has been in defence that has seen him produce his best . Here is high marking, anticipation and unselfish play have been great assets to Melbourne High . He has given tremendous service to the club both on and off the field . He has served on many committee, and many a 'great turn' has been due to the organising ability of "Harro" . THE MAN-IN-WHIT E Former Duty officer at Elsternwick Park, Mr . Joe Jamieson, who is now living in the wilds of South Australia, sent us a cutting from a South Australian paper of an article concerning a retired football umpire . ,We thought you might like to read it .

A recently-retired A grade football umpire has lashed out at the coaches, players, and spectators who "roast" the man-in-white .

"I can say it now, because I have quit," he told me . "The regulations preventing active umpires from making public comment, even in their own defence, applies to me no longer . " Murray Bampton, for 14 years an SA umpire - 10 years as a central umpire in country A Grade, and four years as a SANFL goal umpire - believes the idea of two central umpires will not work .

"There should be more policing of behindthe-play incidents," he said .

"This should be done by umpire observers at the match . Why not give them the authority to report behind-the-play incidents? " Murray Bampton produced a work he described as his message for knockers .

He called it "The Umpire's Prayer" "Dear Maker, help me to become the kind of umpire the coaches would like me to be .

"Give me the mysterious something to enable me at all times to satisfactorily explain the rules, regulations, and penalty frees to the players .

"Help me to reach and to train the uninterested and dim-witted without ever losing my patience or temper .

"Give me that love for my fellow-sportsman which passeth all understanding, so that I may lead the recalcitrant, obstinate, no-good player into the paths of righteousness by my own example and soft persuading remonstrance, instead of busting him in the nose.

"Instil in me tranquility and peace-ofmind, so that no longer will I wake from my restless sleep crying out, `What has the coach got that I haven't, and how did he get it? ' 'Teach me to smile, even if it kills me .

"Make me a better umpire by helping me develop greater qualities of understanding, tolerance, sympathy, wisdom, perspective, equanimity, and mind-reading.

"And when thou has helped me achieve the high pinnacle that coaches and players have prescribed for me, then I shall have become the paragon of all umpiring virtues in this earthly football world .

"And then, dear Maker, move over! "
