Free Energy Bill Support Turn2us launches new partnerships. With living costs a constant source of concern, more and more families are struggling every single month. Despite the summer months, families are still wrestling with energy bills that show no sign of easing. Our research found that 8 out of 10 people on low incomes are worried about paying their energy bills. Turn2us has partnered with SSE and the Green Deal Factory to support low income families to access replacement boilers and home insulation. Through these new partnerships, people on low incomes can use the Turn2us Benefits Calculator – benefits.turn2us.org.uk – to see if they are entitled to a free boiler and loft and wall insulation to help save money on energy bills for years to come. The scheme is open to any home owners and tenants living across Scotland.

Recruiting a young volunteer: A step up the ladder “It’s just not right. I’m not a layabout or a scrounger, I want to do something with my life but nobody will give me a start because I’m 16. If old people were told they couldn’t volunteer because of their age it would be in the papers. Nobody cares about discrimination against the young.” Over the last few months VAER have seen a steady rise of young people wanting to volunteer. These are vibrant, energetic, enthusiastic and dedicated young adults who recognise volunteering is not only a great way to contribute to their community, but a mechanism to gain skills needed for employment. Sounds good doesn’t it! Young people getting off the proverbial sofa and getting active in their community. Well that’s a nice trip to Fantasyland but back in the real world the situation is very different. VAER have plenty of young people who have got off the sofa and registered to volunteer. What we don’t have are enough opportunities where they can volunteer as sadly far too many groups and organisations find numerous and usually mythical reasons why they can’t possibly take on a young person. Here are just a few benefits to recruiting a young volunteer: • Young people are motivated and energetic – both qualities being driven by a desire to learn. • Involving young people can increase your client base by attracting a new young audience and to your services. They are the social media generation and their contact and reach is enormous. • A youth placement demonstrates your commitment to diversity and equal opportunities • The young volunteer of today is the adult volunteer of tomorrow. In this changing social and economic climate we know society is increasingly dependent on volunteers to provide core services. Nurturing young volunteers provides a feeder path for volunteers in the future providing services we may ALL need. • VAER are here to help with resources, advice and support. So to quote author Susan Jeffers “ Feel the Fear do it anyway”.

Or Just Another Brick In The Wall?

For the record: • Yes you can get insurance for young volunteers. If you have public liability insurance already all you have to do is notify your insurers to have volunteers included. It rarely costs extra and if it does the additions are minimal. • No there is not a mass of additional legislation or health and safety requirements. These are the same for young volunteers as it would be for young employees. If you are taking on a vulnerable young person a disclosure check would be required but this is neither onerous nor expensive. • Yes you may have to recognise they don’t have the same life experiences but this does not mean they require excessive supervision. Young people are fast learners and often need less instruction than older counterparts. You just need to see a young person work new computer software for proof of that. • No you are not expected to change your working practises to accommodate a young person. We accept you may need to make some minor adjustments but these are likely to be minimal.

Have Your Say Integration of Health and Social care - The National Care Standards were created in 2002 by the Scottish Government to give those accessing care a definitive list of what they should expect. The twenty three original care standards were developed with the underlying principles of dignity, privacy, choice and safety in mind. However, whilst the principles remain intact, the changes to the way that care services are planned, delivered and scrutinised means it is necessary for the Government to review the standards. The Scottish Government is keen to hear from the people who use care services, either directly or via a family member. This summer is your chance to have a say in the new Care Standards that are being developed, to ensure they are robust enough to maintain the highest possible standards of care for all in Scotland. Age Scotland and the Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland are working with the Government to host a series of ‘Have your Say’ events across the country. The consultations will focus on; • Whether there should be overarching human right based standards that apply to all health and social care settings • Whether there should be a reduction in the number of sets of standards we have, with core standards developed that apply to all service types • How the standards should be written and who should write them • How the National Care Standards should be used. Events will take place in; • Dundee (Cairn Centre) Tuesday 5 August, 11am – 3pm • Glasgow (Health and Social Care ALLIANCE) Monday 11 August, 10am – 2pm • Ayrshire (Broomlands and Bourteehill Age Concern) Tuesday 19 August, 10am – 2pm • Cairndale Hotel,Dumfries Wednesday 27 August, 11am – 3pm Everyone is welcome, but spaces are limited so booking is essential. Living Streets Living Streets is the national charity that stands up for pedestrians. We work with you to create safe, attractive, enjoyable streets where it’s great to walk. Increasing the numbers of people walking for short journeys in our towns and cities has proven health, economic, and social benefits, and experience shows that getting people walking can be as much about the quality of the walking environment as it is about changing attitudes. Walkable streets and public spaces are most successful when local people have the opportunity to influence decisions about them, and at Living Streets we have years of experience of successfully working with local stakeholders to inform practical improvements on the ground and plans for the future. Our Community Street Audits emphasise a cooperative and partnership approach to achieving better streets and spaces, and offer a straightforward way of prioritising issues and identifying effective, pragmatic and often low-cost improvements for the benefit of pedestrians of all ages and abilities. Our Community Street Audit approach is a useful tool for community groups, local authorities, community planning partners, health partners, housing associations, local trades associations and others with an interest in getting more people walking and improving the quality of the local walking environment. Join us at one of our free training sessions this autumn! Thanks to funding from Paths fro All and Scottish Government, we will be delivering four free Community Street Audit Training sessions as part of our Walkable Communities project. Open to representatives from community organisations, voluntary groups, local authorities, community planning partners, housing associations and others with an interest in improving the local environment for walking, the training will be handson and include a short ‘mini-audit’ with delegates provided resources and materials to support them to undertake effective audits in their own communities. The sessions are full day, lunch and refreshments will be provided. • • • •

The Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007 Why do I need to know about the Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007? The Adult Support and Protection Act provides greater protection for certain adults thought or known to be at risk of harm and who are unable to protect themselves, their property or other interests. Depending on your job and where you work you may require to have a degree of knowledge of the legislation to ensure your agency meets its duty under the Act or you may only need to know who the Act protects, what the Act means by the term harm and what signs to watch out for that could indicate that someone is being harmed. The training will give some detail about the legislation in context and will provide an opportunity to discuss practice issues and look at case examples. Date:

19th August 2014

Time:

9.30am - 12.30pm

Venue:

Barrhead HQ, Civic Room 1, Barrhead

Who Should Attend? The course is offered to all East Renfrewshire Council employees, CHCP staff, and voluntary and private sector staff working in the East Renfrewshire area who come into contact with the public. This session also provides an opportunity for those who have had some ASP Training in the past to refresh their knowledge. Is now a good time to apply for Public Contracts? A recent report from ‘Ready For Business’ shows that community benefit clauses (CBC’s) in public contracts have developed considerably over the recent years. The report is a follow up study from a baseline study in 2012 designed to explore the awareness, attitudes, behaviours and aspirations of public sector staff that play a role in purchasing goods and services. The 2014 study encompassed a survey that 214 public sector staff responded to. It was identified that awareness of CBC’s continues to grow and deepen among respondents within the survey with over half (58%) now ‘fully aware’ of CBC’s (up from 41% in 2012). The report also states that there is an increasing number of public sector officers involved in applying CBC’s. Just under two thirds of survey respondents (65%) had personally been involved in applying a CBC in the last 12 months compared to 37% in the 12 months preceding the 2012 survey. Public contracts can be a great way of sustaining your organisation and with further development of CBC’s now may be a good time to look into this method of income generation further.
