Dear Readers, The Department of Spanish and Portuguese had a successful spring semester! We want to thank all of our faculty, staff, and students for all of their hard work and dedication to continuing education and a passion for language. Also, a huge “thank you ” to our readers, your support is truly appreciated. Now, we would like to take a moment and look back at some of the events and accomplishments seen in the department this semester.

Please enjoy and have a beautiful summer!

Equity, Inclusion, Diversity and Belonging

Recent Efforts to Foster Belonging and Inclusiveness in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese

In 2014, three of our graduate students founded an informal Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Over the course of the following years, this committee fostered conversations about diversity in the department and the university through several activities, including film screenings and roundtables. Six years later, in 2020, the department formally constituted a standing departmental committee DEI committee that includes representatives from faculty, academic staff, university staff, and graduate students. Co-chaired by Professors Medina and Sapega, the DEI committee meets monthly and reports regularly to the Departmental Committee about its activities. One of the first tasks of the committee was to craft a Diversity Statement for the department, which is now on our department web page. Since 2022, faculty and instructional academic staff have been encouraged to summarize their DEI activities in their annual Professional Activities Report. In addition, the DEI committee has met several times with the Van Hise building manager to explore ways of making department spaces more welcoming and inclusive. Recently, the committee helped to organize a Town Hall meeting that provided an opportunity for graduate students to meet with the department leadership team. Other current projects that are being discussed by the DEI committee include the development of a new 300-level undergraduate language practice class geared toward the needs of heritage speakers of Spanish and a resource tab focusing on belonging and thriving in the department that will be added to the department web page.

Dr. Matthew Burner and his undergraduate mentee, Zach Peterson, have begun working on a digital humanities project to create an online Asturian corpus. Asturian, a minoritized and underrepresented language from northern Spain lacks the socio- political support to rightfully gain its official status, both in Asturias and in Spain. This has also caused a lack of many resources and tools that would facilitate linguistic research and language documentation and preservation. Through a combination of linguistic analysis, computer programming, and sometimes even brute force, this corpus project aims to publish an online tagged and searchable body of written data elicited by native Asturian speakers. Upon publication, it will be accessible to Asturian community members and linguists alike to further study and help preserve the language.

Students from Jamie De Moya-Cotter’s section of Spanish 101 participated in an event by Sotavento. The event included a presentation (in English & Spanish) and music (with performative dance elements) by the group Sotavento, with songs in Spanish, Náhuatl, P’urépecha and Maya. The group presented their recent work “El viaje de papolotl”, which narrates the journey of a butterfly through various regions in México. It was an exciting hands-on experience for 101 students and an opportunity to approach the language from a different direction than normal at the 101 level.

Maya activist and writer, Bernardo Caamal (el Arux) and his daughter Inaytah visited the UW-Madison campus to present their book about the history and resistance of their community, as well as participate in a panel discussion and presentation of the film, "Maya Land: Listening to the Bees" co-directed by Spanish and Portuguese faculty member, Kata Beilin.

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese is delighted to announce this year ’ s Marsha Gray Ehrlich Scholarship Fund recipients. Marsha Gray Ehrlich was a former graduate student in our Department, and an inspirational teacher during her long professional career. She received a Master of Arts, with a major in Spanish, on August 17, 1968. She carried the preparation she received from our Department and her joy for Spanish to New York, where she taught Spanish and Latin in public schools for more than thirty years, before

retiring in 2002. Ms. Ehrlich carried her love and passion for languages inside and outside the classroom, inspiring colleagues and family alike.

To honor Marsha’s lifelong interest in and commitment to Spanish language and culture, the Donors wish to support students and research through the Department of Spanish & Portuguese Each year, awards are presented to three third- or fourthyear students who show a sustained commitment to community service related to the Spanish or Portuguese language and/or culture. We congratulate these students on their sustained commitment to community service.

Junior Fiona Finger is double major in Spanish and Psychology whose volunteer endeavors focus on mental health and education. As part of the First Year Leadership Institute, she served as an advocate for mental health awareness in underserved immigrant communities. She then volunteered as a tutor in high schools, middle and primary schools in Granada, Spain and David, Panamá, where in addition to helping students improve their English she also served as a counselor for students experiencing mental health difficulties. Fiona was extremely grateful to receive this award, stating, “ my passion lies in understanding others and helping them reach their goals. I love seeing different corners of the world, and I am extremely grateful for all the opportunities UW-Madison has brought me. Your support makes a huge difference in my educational path, and I will forever be grateful for your involvement.”

Maggie Thomas is a junior pursuing a double major in Spanish and Communication Sciences and Disorders. Maggie has volunteered as a tutor, an interpreter/translator at the UW Speech and Hearing Clinic and in the Language Acquisition and Bilingualism lab, where she assists clinicians and researchers in helping families with bilingual children, many of whom have moderate to severe disabilities. Maggie helps children and their families by translating documents and screening Spanishspeaking children for language difficulties so that they may be adequately treated by clinicians. Upon receiving the award, Maggie wrote “I plan on attending a master’s program with a bilingual (Spanish/English) specialization so that I can better both my knowledge of language development and my abilities to better help children with communication disorders. My life, in college and beyond, has been forever changed for the better in a way that wouldn’t have been possible without the UW Spanish program and all of the service opportunities it has provided for me ”

Congratulations to Letícia Barbosa for being selected as one of this year's L&S Teaching Mentors!!

The L&S TA Training and Support Team received many excellent applications this cycle, making the selection process highly competitive. Letícia's selection speaks to their confidence that beyond being an engaged academic and teacher, she has the right skills and disposition to help foster the growth of new TAs. Teaching Mentors will work together with the L&S TA Training & Support Team at the Fall 2024 TA Training to convey crucial information and work on pedagogical skill development with incoming TAs. It's been quite the stretch for Letícia, as this is the second broad-scope award she has won this academic year! Letícia was also a winner of the 2023-2024 Advanced Achievement in Teaching Award. Well done, Letícia!

Flor Mazzei has been selected as the recipient of the department's spring TA teaching award! This recognition is a testament to how "above and beyond" Flor has gone over the years with respect to all duties associated with being a TA. We are lucky to have her in the department!

Well done, Flor, and thank you for all that you've done and continue to do to support the department's teaching mission!

Congratulations to Bárbara Rodríguez-Guridi, Congratulations to Bárbara Rodríguez-Guridi, Chancellor’s Hilldale Award for Excellence in Teaching Chancellor’s Hilldale Award for Excellence in Teaching

When COVID-19 struck, Bárbara Rodríguez-Guridi initiated an ambitious collaboration with a university in Colombia. The innovative partnership allowed her pandemic-confined Spanish-language students to “travel” to a Latin American country for fruitful, bi-weekly conversations with native Spanish-speaking students. The approach was so successful that other instructors adopted it.

It’s a powerful example of how Rodríguez-Guridi meets pedagogical challenges with energy and creativity. Students love her engaging assignments, like having them interview Hispanic members of the Madison community in Spanish. Her student course evaluations are over the top a mean score of 3.9 out of 4.0. As one student put it, she “embodies kindness, fairness, wisdom and fun.”

A masterful instructor of Spanish, Rodríguez-Guridi excels just as much as an instructor of instructors. She earns high praise for training and mentoring teaching assistants, providing them with a strong scaffolding for success. And her colleagues rave about her leadership and professional generosity, which have helped the department attain a national reputation for excellence.
