Dear Readers, Welcome back to the UW-Madison Department of Spanish and Portuguese! As we embark on the journey of the spring semester, we reflect with pride on the achievements our department made in the fall of 2023. From groundbreaking research to inspiring collaborations, our community has demonstrated resilience, creativity, and a shared commitment to academic excellence.

As we turn the page to spring 2024, we eagerly anticipate the coming months as we delve into exciting projects, engage in thought-provoking discussions, and foster a sense of unity among our students, faculty, and staff.

Welcome back, and here's to a spring semester filled with inspiration, collaboration, and academic success!

Kaleidoscope 2024

The 2024 Kaleidoscope 18th Annual Graduate Student Conference, organized by graduate students of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will host a two-day interdepartmental event providing an open forum for undergraduates, graduates, professors, and scholars to share ideas and research during the dates of March 8th & 9th, 2024. Each day of the conference will entail up to three panels of presentations in sessions moderated by Ph.D. students and professors from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Kaleidoscope will feature thematically integrated keynote addresses from three renowned scholars in the areas of Spanish and Portuguese literature and linguistics.

This year’s conference invites discussion around the breaking points, processes and mutations that are capable of threatening or advancing the current climate of social, technological, institutional and ecocritical change and their implications within the study of Lusobrazilian and Hispanic worlds. Kaleidoscope aspires to foster meaningful collaboration between attendees, scholars, and speakers. We hope to expand horizons from the exchange of knowledge, ideas and experiences discussed at te event. Altogether, we aim for the twofold outcome of 1) furthering future research and 2) motivating awareness and positive change in the fields of Spanish and Portuguese language, literature, film, and culture.

Each semester, University Housing residents are invited to nominate instructors that have impacted them positively, challenged them, helped them learn, and inspired them. Students in our Portuguese 204 course crafted a fantastic magazine during the fall semester. Ph.D. student, Leticia Guedes Barbosa instructed the class and helped the students put together a truly stunning work. We love to see the creative

Saylín Álvarez (Department of Spanish and Portuguese), along with Jaerin Ahn (Department of Asian Languages and Cultures) and Erin Paul (Division of Continuing Studies), recipients of the Language Institute’s 2022 Committed to Change grant, presented their award-winning projects at a December LI Brownbag for Language Educators. Saylín Álvarez’ video project Voces addresses underrepresented topics and issues affecting Black, Latinx, LGBTQ+ and non-binary students in language courses (especially Spanish). The videos feature interviews Saylín conducted with students and language instructors on campus who express their perspectives and perceptions of the content of language classes as it pertains to their diverse identities and life experiences. Now in the final stage, the video-interviews will be launched in the webpage Voces (to be linked to the Department’s website). The project’s aim is to continue the dialogue, create awareness and promote more inclusive practices in language teaching. Martiniano Etchart, doctoral student in the SLA program and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and Fernando Tejedo, copresented in the second edition of the Diversity Forum (with colleagues Dragan Mikulin and Dianna Murphy). Their session focused on the concrete ways that language ideologies can reinforce and perpetuate stereotypes and result in discriminatory practices.

The session explored questions such as: What are standard(ized) languages? What does it mean to have an accent or to think you don’t? How do our beliefs about language influence how we perceive and treat others? What is linguistic discrimination?
