United Way of Dutchess-Orange Region

Welcome! Thank you so much for joining us for our fifth annual Celebration of Service Awards Dinner! We’re so glad you are here to celebrate and honor some of our area’s premiere businesses, nonprofits and our longtime board member and volunteer, Maureen Halahan! Maureen, our Distinguished Leadership Award recipient, is a true friend to United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region. Her dedication and enthusiasm have helped transform Orange County through her leadership of the Orange County Partnership. Over and over we hear from people who remark on Maureen’s kindness and empathy — and her deep respect for each person she meets. Maureen is someone who is always thinking of how to make things better for each and every one of us. Tonight we’re also honoring our top workplace campaigns. We are so proud of our colleagues at Central Hudson for once again showing their strong support of United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region as this year’s number one top campaign! In addition, we’re honoring 12 other businesses as well as two local nonprofit organizations. We hope you had a chance to look over the amazing silent auction items during the reception and visit our nonprofit partners to learn more about the work that you help support through your donations. During the dinner, you’ll have another chance to win something special during our live auction with the amazing J. Will from KISSFM. Remember that tonight is a benefit for United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region, so while you’re finding some treasures at the auction, you’re also helping children succeed in school, providing hope for a family escaping domestic abuse or helping a veteran find safe shelter. Yes, while we’re all having fun, we’re also doing good. That’s right, with your support United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region helped 166,466 people last year. Each year we continue to expand what we do by listening to you. When you bring a need to our attention, we make a difference. That’s how United Way’s Louis Greenspan Children’s Corner came to be. Right now the basement area that houses our Day of Sharing gift-in-kind program is undergoing a much needed renovation. When it reopens in August, we hope you can join us for the ribbon cutting and see how representatives from nonprofits, faith-based organizations and schools find items most needed for their clients. Remember to mark June 29th on your calendar for an event that’s putting the fun in FUNdraiser: our first annual Pull the Plane! Teams of 20 will compete to pull a Boeing 757 the fastest for 12 feet on a runway at New York Stewart International Airport. Sign up with your coworkers and friends and grab bragging rights for this ultimate tug of war (www.uwdor.org/pulltheplane)! If you’d like to become more involved in our work, please speak to us. We’d love to have your help on future projects.

A marketing veteran of 10 years, she is dedicated to positioning Rhinebeck Bank as a valuable financial resource for individuals, families and businesses throughout the Hudson Valley, as well as a contributor of time and funds to local charitable organizations. In May 2016, she co-launched, “Wake Up with Rhinebeck Bank,” an online community show that highlights the success and contributions of local businesses, community leaders, and not-for-profits. In addition to gaining exposure for these outside organizations, the show has resulted in numerous business opportunities for Rhinebeck Bank as well, including new deposit and lending account relationships. Other notable campaigns Michelle has launched in her two-year tenure include “I Bank at Rhinebeck Bank” and “Welcome Home,” which highlight the Bank’s many long-term business customer relationships and residential lending success stories, respectively. In 2013, she founded Think Social First, which quickly became one of the Hudson Valley’s top marketing agencies. With a client roster of 50 local businesses, Michelle created and executed new social media campaigns to help each client reach their revenue goals. A Poughkeepsie native, Michelle is passionate about staying involved and giving back to her community. She is currently the Chair of First Friday Poughkeepsie and the Th!nk Dutchess Business Excellence Awards, and serves on the board of Hudson Valley Young Professionals. She is dedicated to these organizations because they help stimulate economic growth in the City of Poughkeepsie. You may have heard her host on 96.1 Kiss FM – the Hudson Valley’s #1 Hit Music Station. She prides herself on delivering local content on radio - once again supporting her community. She has been recognized as a Dutchess County Chamber of Commerce “40 under 40” recipient and Hudson Valley Magazine 2017 “Women in Business” honoree. Michelle is a Cum Laude graduate of Marist College with a Bachelors Degree of Science, concentrating in Marketing. In her free time, Michelle enjoys spending time with her husband and two young sons. She appreciates a good workout and spends a majority of her time recording and performing original songs like the newly released, “It Was Love,” at well-attended local events.

ANTHONY RISPO

Singer-songwriter, composer, classical organist, and pianist, Anthony Rispo, creates and performs in various musical settings, ranging from concert halls and churches to rock/pop venues and recording studios. His original work for solo organ, Daydream, was aired on American Public Radio’s Pipedream, a program featuring organ performances, both archived and live. Anthony has also written a work entitled, ‘Suite, No. 1 for Organ and Strings’ which was premiered at Lincoln Center in NYC by the Salomé Chamber Orchestra. A more recent revision of this work was premiered in Pasadena, CA in 2018. As a performer, Anthony has had the opportunity to tour the east coast playing a series of organ recitals. He was a featured performer for the Piccolo Spoletto Festival in Charleston, SC in the summers of 2013 and 2018. Anthony has performed twice at both West Point Military Academy’s Cadet Chapel and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC. He was the soloist for Samuel Barber’s Toccata Festiva for Organ and Orchestra while a student at The Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied organ with Todd Wilson. Prior to his studies at The Cleveland Institute, he attended the Pre-College Division at the Juilliard School of Music in NYC. For the majority of his young adult life, Anthony spent his time immersed in the world of classical music, attending performances and summer programs, performing, and studying. During his formative years, he was exposed to a variety of styles of music, from traditional hymns at church to participating in Broadway classics while in grammar school, to Italian folk and pop music and even his brother’s punk-rock band. At the age of 9, he began playing the organ by ear; soon after, he was given the responsibility of playing for church services, also assisting the choir director, Cris Spinner, for rehearsals and special occasions. Anthony’s love of improvisation is directly influenced by the moments when Cris would ask him to slide on the bench as she would slide off, expecting him to seamlessly continue the music. 13

UNITED WAY IS MAKING AN IMPACT! Days of Caring and Volunteerism United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region is proud to be a recognized as a regional volunteer center of New York State. We have a network of approximately 1,600 volunteers working together to donate their time and efforts to making our community a better place. We operate a volunteer portal which offers hundreds of volunteer opportunities throughout the year. United Way hosts seven signature volunteer events throughout the year called our Days of Caring. Our Days of Caring are Martin Luther King Day Jr. of Service in January, National Volunteer Week in April, New York Parks Day in May, National Hunger Awareness Day & Day of Action in June, 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance in September and Make A Difference Day in October. With the help of our nonprofit partners, and generous volunteer groups, we are able to complete close to 50 capacity building projects throughout the year. Supported by the Volunteer Generation Fund of New York State. http://volunteer.uwdor.org Days of Sharing and The Louis Greenspan Children’s Corner Four times a year United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region opens the basement of our Poughkeepsie office to offer donations to representatives from nonprofits, faith-based organizations and schools that serve our Dutchess & Orange region. The “shoppers” arrive with a list in mind of the items they need to best serve the clients of their organization. We offer clothing, bedding, home goods, books, office supplies and an entire room designated for children’s items called The Louis Greenspan Children’s Corner. This special space has all the basic items that families need to raise healthy, happy children. From hygiene items, to backpacks, books and toys, we stock as many items as we can to improve the health and education of children in our community. www.uwdor.org/day-of-sharing Economic Mobility United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region is one of the few United Ways across the country to be selected to have an AmeriCorps VISTA focusing on economic mobility in our community. Through this VISTA supported program, United Way is able to coordinate financial literacy workshops and support free tax preparation programming in an effort to alleviate poverty. The VISTA also works to expand the Gift-In-Kind program to increase donations for underserved people in our community. www.hv-cash.org Newburgh ESPRI (Empire State Poverty Reduction Initiative) Newburgh received grant funding from New York State with the goal of reducing poverty and increasing economic opportunity in the city. To learn more, you can attend an Newburgh ESPRI taskforce meeting held every 4th Monday at 10am at the Newburgh Activity Center: 401 Washington Street.
