1 Policy Purpose
At UWC Atlantic PSHE is effectively a ‘Life Skills’ programme which aims to help equip our students with some of the tools needed to cope with adult life It also allows them to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes towards complex issues in their lives It takes place mainly during the first year at the College and is compulsory for all students.
In accordance with the DCELLS Personal and Social Framework for 7-19 Year Olds in Wales, our specific objectives for this programme are to:
● develop students’ self-esteem and a sense of personal responsibility
● promote self-respect, respect for others and celebrate diversity
● equip students to live safe, healthy lives
● prepare students for the choices and opportunities of lifelong learning
● empower students to participate in the college and our community as active responsible citizens locally, nationally and globally
● foster positive attitudes and behaviour towards the principles of sustainable development and global citizenship
● prepare students for the challenges, choices and responsibilities of work and adult life
2 Policy Statement
The PSHE Association (https://www.pshe-association.org.uk/) defines Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) as ‘a planned programme of learning opportunities and experiences that help children and young people grow and develop as individuals, as members of families and of social and economic communities’ PSHE helps to give our students the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, safe and independent lives and to become adults who genuinely care about those around them. Alongside the PSHE programme, students will be exposed to a Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) programme PSHE and RSE will be planned in a way which allows flexibility to respond to the needs of the student body and in response to prominent issues that arise
