UNITED WOMEN FOR CHANGE
A CIRCLE OF EMPOWERMENT
The United Nations Women programme
shows that more than two-thirds of the world's
796 million illiterate people are female.
These global statistics show that just 39% of rural girls attend secondary school. This is far fewer than rural boys (45%), urban girls (59%) and urban boys (60%).
Every additional year of primary school increases girls' eventual wages by 10-20%. It also encourages them to marry later and have fewer children, and leaves them less vulnerable to violence.
Furthermore, it is proven that when we invest in a girl the impact will go further, as they will care for their people around them. Research also indicates that when more income is put into the hands of women, child nutrition, health and education improves.

HOW CAN WE
CONTRIBUTE TO THE SOLUTION?
At UWC Atlantic, we know education is transformative and we want to create a dedicated group of women, leaders in their sector, to support each other and mentor the next generation of women - from disadvantaged backgrounds and allow them to access a UWC education.
As UWC Atlantic celebrates its 60th anniversary, we are determined to be bold and ambitious.
WE WANT TO:
Broaden our student diversity.
Apply our distinctive educational philosophy and ethos more widely.
Focus on supporting girls from the MENA region, Africa, Latin America and war-torn countries to increase their education opportunities.
03
DELIBERATELY DIVERSE
UWC Atlantic currently has 360 students from 90+ nationalities and among the most underrepresented regions are MENA, Africa and Latin America, as you can see on the pie chart below.
Our student body is deliberately diverse in respect of culture, nationality, socioeconomic background, religious belief and physical ability.
Thanks to one of the world’s most comprehensive scholarship programmes (55% of our students receive some form of financial support), refugees, those from developing countries, regions of conflict, deprived and disadvantaged backgrounds study, live and learn alongside children of royalty, diplomats and entrepreneurscreating a rich tapestry of views and ideas where debate, insight and understanding are promoted.

UNITED WOMEN FOR CHANGE CIRCLE
We want to celebrate women and their role as agents of transformation and we are seeking a circle of female philanthropists from diverse backgrounds who will agree to contribute their time, talent and financial support to allow young female students to attend UWC Atlantic from the MENA region, Africa. Latin America and war-torn countries.
These young girls will become the future leaders of change - bridge builders who understand the importance of systemic change in their own communities. With the support of strong female mentors and a transformative education at UWC Atlantic – the United Women for Change Circle will be formed.
“I have witnessed first-hand the disadvantage that many young girls from these regions face as a documentary filmmaker. I joined the UWC Atlantic United Women for Change Circle to affect a change, to offer a chance of education and be able to transform a young girl’s future. I would encourage my fellow females to unite and join this circle of empowerment.”
