WAREI-­‐JINJA SHRINE 001 Before crossing the arched bridge over the Suka-­‐gawa river, worshipper take two deep bows, clap twice and take a last bow in front of Japan’s largest Otorii. It’s over 12 meters in height.

What strikes the eye when taking your first steps over Miyuki-­‐bashi bridge are the many marks on every stair and partly destroyed handrails.

Only older generaQons however remember the air-­‐raid on Uwajima, during which parts of the city were bombed and burnt to the ground.

Children in nearby Mima, mistook the raid for fireworks, that lit up the sky bright in the night of the bombing.

The Miyuki-­‐bashi bridge survived and serves today as a reminder of the importance of peace. tbc.

THE GIRL FROM THE GASOLINE STAND

Looking the cars pass by since 30 years, aWer being rescued from a dumpster, she has become a kind o celebrity in Uwajima. A TV team came to visit her and someQmes tourists show up to take a photo together with her. When the nightshiW ends she goes to rest and starts her day again together with the first gasoline stand staff that appears in the morning. Despite all the fame and her tenure she is sQll nameless.
