BULLFIGHT

BullfighMng in Japan has a long tradiMon and in Uwajima you can trace it back to the Edo period, when people would enjoy the fight of bulls in the fields or small arenas. The striking difference between Japanese and for example Spanish bullfighMng is, that no animal is killed during the fight. The bullfighMng in Japan is someMmes associated with Sumo and the winning bull celebrated like a Sumo wrestler. What is very unique and maybe counterintuiMve is that the price money isn't handed to the winning bull but the losing one, what arises from the idea that the value of the winning bull increases and the losing bulls goes down.

HOZUMI BRIDGE The name Nobushige Hozumi will certainly be new to you. He was born in Uwajima and went to become a statesman and the first person to hold the doctorate of law in Japan. He played an essenMal role in the development of the Japanese legal system in the late nineteenth and early twenMeth centuries. What makes him however stand out from the crowd of important statesmen from around the world is his humbleness, pracMcality and his altruisMc spirit. The people of Uwajima planned to erect a statue of Nobushige to honour the towns famous son. But Nobushige leb a will in which he explicitly asked not to be honoured with a useless statue. His words engraved in a small stone next to the Hozumi bridge translates roughly as follows: "I would rather be a bridge used by everyone than be a statue that the people look upon.”
