KIYA RYOKAN 001 The story of Kiya Ryokan starts with a delicious recipe for igamochi (small caked rice balls with bean paste filling).

The Hirakawa family sweets were so popular that the family could soon afford to built a ryokan in the centre of Uwajima.

1911 the Kiya Inn opened its doors and was since host to many illustrious guests like Inukai Tsuyoshi, Gōto Shinpei, Ryōtarō Shiba, Akira Yoshimura to name just a few.

Nowadays Kiya Ryokan welcomes its guests with the historical heart wrapped in modern shades.

Redesigned with care by architect Yuko Nagayama and being selected as a registered tangible cultural property, one group of guests per day enjoys the whole unique building as their Uwajima retreat.

Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. everybody is welcome to make a guided tour of Kiya Ryokan for a 200 yen admission fee.

There is also a small shop offering a selection of goods and souvenirs related to the area and a small café and exhibition space to enjoy.

THE TALE OF DATE HIDEMUNE CelebraNng the 400th jubilee of the Date clan in Uwajima, the picture book “The Tale of Date Hidemune” depicts the life of Date Masamune’s son, who was appointed Daimyo of Uwajima. His family ruled and shaped the area since that Nme. You can get a free copy of the informaNve and colourful book at one of the shinkin bank branches in the city.

Available only in Japanese it can serve as a study help for your language improvement.

KASHIHO At Kashiho Kōno store you will find Japanese sweets in colours KŌNO and shapes for the given Nme of the year. In summer a goldfish pond or a watermelon, for halloween a jack o’ lantern, and during Christmas Nme a Santa Claus with Japanese flavour.
