Dear Pioneer family,
Fiscal year 21–22 has been extraordinary in so many ways.
$10 MILLION COMMITTED TO ESTABLISH THE CAPSTAN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM OVER $7,400,000 RAISED
Together, we have raised over $7.4 million this to bolster excellence at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Fiscal year 21–22 marks the third year in a row of achieving record-breaking fundraising at the Foundation.
In April 2022, we announced the most significant gift in the Foundation’s history, a $10 million gift commitment to establish the Capstan Scholarship Program. This transformational gift, given by Todd and Susan Johnson, will allow selected students to graduate debt-free, providing scholarships covering full tuition, room, and board to students every year, beginning this fall. This remarkable gift will change the lives of countless students. We are grateful for Todd and Susan and celebrate their generosity.
Regardless of its purpose, each gift from our alumni, friends, and corporate partners ultimately supports our greatest asset—Pioneer students. This Annual Report provides a glimpse into the profound impact your giving has on our students, faculty, and staff to support the fantastic educational experience for which UW-Platteville is celebrated.
On behalf of UW-Platteville and the UW-Platteville Foundation, thank you. Because of you, our future remains bright.
Joseph Denk Chair Board of Directors University of Wisconsin-Platteville FoundationThank you to our generous alumni, friends, corporate partners, faculty and staff, and students who sponsored an engraved paver outside of Sesquicentennial Hall. More than 290 pavers were sponsored, raising more than $115,000. The funding directly supports undergraduate research opportunities in UW-Platteville’s College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science.
Research is one of the most impactful opportunities students find at UW-Platteville, allowing them to build connections with faculty, clarify their area of interest, contribute their knowledge to solve real-world problems, and prepare for the workforce or continued education. Research in the College of EMS happens in all disciplines and covers a wide diversity of topics, such as smart electric grids, computational research on new pharmaceuticals, ceramic membranes for dairy wastewater treatment, and assistive devices made from recycled plastics.
The engraved pavers are installed along the walkways and patios surrounding Sesquicentennial Hall and Busby Hall of Engineering. Sesquicentennial Hall celebrated its grand opening on Sept. 1. The $55 million state-of-the-art engineering building adjoins Busby Hall of Engineering and supports interdisciplinary engineering and computer science.
In 2022, the UW-Platteville Foundation celebrated its largest gift in its 50-plus-year history—$10 million from Todd and Susan Johnson.
This transformational gift established the Capstan Scholarship Program, which will provide scholarships covering full tuition, room, and board to selected students every year, allowing them to graduate debt free. Eligible students must have a willingness to work hard, overcome obstacles, showcase gumption, demonstrate moral character, and have financial need.
UW-Platteville welcomed the inaugural cohort of Capstan Scholars to campus this fall.
Hometown: Richland Center, Wisconsin
Major: Civil engineering
Why did you choose this major?
I chose this major because I grew up around an engineer and learned a lot from him throughout the years.
Why did you choose UW-Platteville? I chose UW-Platteville because of its engineering programs and low tuition costs.
What are you most looking forward to while here? I’m looking forward to pursuing my dream profession along with obtaining the college experience.
What are some of your hobbies/interests? Some of my hobbies are playing soccer, working out, and watching Shark Tank.
Hometown: Sun Prairie, Wisconsin
Major: Mechanical engineering
Why did you choose this major?
I have always liked to build and design things.
Why did you choose UW-Platteville? Because I love the hands-on learning approach and smaller class sizes.
What are you most looking forward to while here? Being able to use the labs and making a ton of memories with my friends.
What are some of your hobbies/interests? I like to build, spend time with friends, and play video games.
Hometown: Cottage Grove, Wisconsin
Major: Construction management and construction safety management, with architecture and business minors
Why did you choose this major? Construction is a way for me to personalize someone’s needs and wants in a loving, cozy way, where people can create memories with their families during holiday dinners and where their babies take their first steps. I am an independent, strong-willed woman who is determined to be in this field, and I want to prove that women are strong and can do everything a man is able to do. It brings joy to me to know that I will soon be learning how to create safety, yet function and security for people in need and people who deserve their dream home. One of my goals is to be a part of Project Home.
Why did you choose UW-Platteville? I can get my hands-on education and be able to meet new friends who are also a lot like me. This is a small town full of amazing people. As a first-generation student in my family, cost of my degree was important to me. The Capstan Scholarship has led me to be able to accomplish my dreams and goals without having to pay back several thousands of dollars. The feeling of being told I had received the Capstan Scholarship and can get my degree debt free has influenced me to do just as the family of the Capstan Scholarship did, by donating money to this scholarship or creating another lifesaving scholarship in my name to help the future generations of students at UW-Platteville.
What are you most looking forward to while here? Being able to meet new friends, spread my wings, and embrace the new possibilities and opportunities I have on campus.
What are some of your hobbies/interests? I have been volunteering with my church handbell choir to bring music to the congregation since eighth grade. During the beginning of summer, through my church, I was a helper for fifth through eighth graders who were interested in going to Leatherdale Bible Camp in Alcorn, Wisconsin, for two weeks. Through my middle school years, I went every year for a week in the summer. As a high schooler, I was there to help kids better understand God
and how to deal with homesickness and grow to be independent. I enjoy snowboarding, visiting family, baking and cooking, traveling, fishing, target shooting with my bow and arrow, trying new foods, camping, going to northern Wisconsin, and snuggling with my German Shepherd-Golden Retriever mix at home, named Hero.
GARRETT ZEMKE
Hometown: Black Creek, Wisconsin
Major: Mechanical engineering
Why did you choose this major?
I chose this major because I’ve always been fascinated with the concept that lots of large complicated systems could be looked at as lots of small simple systems working together to create a large working mechanism.
Why did you choose UW-Platteville? UW-Platteville is a great university. I chose UW-Platteville for a couple of reasons, the first of which is the small class sizes. The smaller class sizes give me an opportunity to be more involved with my courses and understand the material better, which I feel is important for a proper education. When it comes to self-improvement, I think it’s important to do the best you can with what you have. That’s why my second reason I chose UW-Platteville is because of the reputation. UW-Platteville is the best engineering school in the quad-state area. Being the best engineering school in the area, I’m sure I’ll be able to get a strong education to help me with my future endeavors.
What are you most looking forward to while here?
At UW-Platteville, I’m excited to see how I will rise to and solve complicated problems.
What are some of your hobbies/interests? Hanging out with friends and family, playing my guitar, and working on and learning about cars.
For decades, Alliant Energy has been a strong supporter of UW-Platteville, forming a partnership rooted in shared values and interests—from improving the quality of life in local communities to preparing the future workforce, and more. To honor the company’s ongoing support, it was recently recognized with the 2022 College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science Friend of the College Award.
Alliant Energy’s support impacts nearly every facet of the university, including student scholarships, Women in STEM programming, youth outreach, athletics, and more.
“We are so grateful for Alliant Energy’s longtime support of initiatives and programs at UW-Platteville,” said UW-Platteville Interim Chancellor Dr. Tammy Evetovich. “Our organizations share a commitment to the values
of diversity, equity, and inclusion and a dedication to building strong local communities. This partnership helps our institution fulfill its mission and provide our students with a transformational education and pathway to success.”
Initiatives regularly supported by Alliant Energy include the annual Women in STEM Banquet and the College of EMS Expo. This year also marked the fifth year of Alliant Energy’s premier sponsorship of Pioneering Your Future in STEM—a program open to girls in fifth through eighth grade that provides them opportunities to learn about STEM careers.
“The Pioneering Your Future program is really important, because it’s critical to start reaching young women at the middle school level or even sooner,” said Kim Sargent, Senior Program Manager for Women in STEM at UW-Platteville.
“We need to reach them at a young age and expose them to all of the options out there for them, in order to create a more balanced workforce. This is important, because in industry, we’re creating products for all people, not just a certain segment of our population.”
As part of this effort to keep young students interested in STEM fields, Alliant Energy created a new graphic novel series, “The Power Chronicles,” and selected the Pioneering Your Future in STEM events at UW-Platteville to debut the new series last spring. All participants received a complimentary copy.
“Alliant Energy’s support is so important to the success of this program, because it makes the event very affordable for students and allows us to give students scholarships,” said Sargent.
Alliant Energy is also supporting students in the newly opened Sesquicentennial Hall. The Alliant Energy Open Prototyping Space will help shape the engineers of tomorrow. A tinkering space, where ideas are transformed into reality, the Alliant Energy Open Prototyping space is open to everyone—students, faculty, staff, and community members—who can check out a toolbox and access materials to create and build.
Alliant Energy’s support extends beyond STEM on campus and includes funding the Alliant Energy 5x5x5 Scholarship for Underrepresented Students of various majors. Alliant Energy is also a premier corporate partner with UW-Platteville Intercollegiate Athletics and supports the Pioneer Leadership Institute—a leadership development and transition program for more than 600 student-athletes and chancellor’s scholars.
“Recruitment for a strong workforce begins long before jobs are created and interviews scheduled,” said Julie Bauer, Executive Director of the Alliant Energy Foundation. “Alliant Energy sees early career programs and initiatives as critical opportunities to create a solid workforce and attract future employees. UW-Platteville brings our company focus on workforce readiness to life. We are thrilled to support such a high caliber and innovative college that inspires their students to choose critical fields of study and meaningful careers.”
WE’RE CREATING PRODUCTS FOR ALL PEOPLE , NOT JUST A CERTAIN SEGMENT OF OUR POPULATION

RECRUITMENT FOR A STRONG WORKFORCE BEGINS LONG BEFORE JOBS ARE CREATED AND INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED
Bill Broske is remembered by many as being both community- and internationally-minded, leaving his mark on the agriculture industry in both Wisconsin and developing countries overseas. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics and his Master of Science in Agricultural Industries, both from UW-Platteville. He worked in his family’s cheese business for 25 years, before selling the corporation and working as a cheese and food inspector for 18 years at the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. He always maintained a passion for international travel, and after retirement he worked with developing countries to help them achieve sustainable ways to make and market cheese and other dairy products from all types of animals.
Thanks to a gift from the Bill Broske Estate and his wife, Mary Lou Broske, UW-Platteville students are continuing to benefit from his passion for the agriculture industry and international travel. Last summer, funding from his estate allowed a group of 10 UW-Platteville agriculture students to travel to Harlaxton, England, on a Fields and Farms short-term education abroad class.
Led by Dr. Tera Montgomery, Professor of dairy and animal science, and Dr. Douglas Adams, Assistant Professor of education, the course was designed to inform students of the various perspectives through which they view the world. Before embarking on the 10-day trip, students began the learning experience at home with discussions about perceptions of their own surroundings.
“We spent some time in Platteville [before we left] walking Main Street and looking at it differently than
ever before,” said Montgomery. “Then we drove to Pioneer Farm and the solar panels in Memorial Park to get the students thinking about their own surroundings and things they don’t pay as much attention to, so that we could compare it with how we see things over there.”
Once they were abroad, the students engaged in a range of agriculture-related learning experiences. They toured a walled garden project and an underground aquaponics facility built in a World War II bomb shelter. They visited the National Farmer’s Union in London to learn about how they advocate for farmers, and they created an educational project at their home base of Harlaxton Manor to inform the public about an endangered newt species on the property. The students also had the opportunity to take side trips to Edinburgh and Paris.
“Just as important as the agriculture topics they learned,” Montgomery said, “was the experience of traveling to new, unfamiliar places, learning to navigate public transportation, and the confidence the students gained throughout the trip.”
“It’s important for these students to know that they can do more than they think they can,” said Montgomery. “For students from rural areas, home and the land is very important to them. And, if you are managing land and in the agriculture field, a lot of times you do have to stay home. So, it’s really important for them to understand that they can, at least temporarily, leave home and experience other things. But more importantly, it gives them the opportunity to see the similarities and differences in agriculture that happen everywhere.”
Dan Arnold has been making a name for himself in the NFL over the past five years, but he still gives back to where he got his start, most recently making a major gift to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville football program.
Arnold was a wide receiver for the Pioneers from 2013–15. He was also a member of the Pioneer track and field team, earning the title of 2016 conference champion in both the 60-meter and 110-meter hurdles, while breaking the school record in both. He also earned All-American status and took second place in the 60-meter hurdles at the 2016 Indoor NCAA Championship.
Arnold’s career in the NFL began in 2017 with the New Orleans Saints. He is currently a tight end for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“We feel so fortunate to be able to give back to an outstanding organization that has blessed us far beyond football,” said Arnold and his wife, Morgan, who graduated from UW-Platteville in 2017. “Platteville is our home, and we want to invest in it. We believe in Coach Munz and the vision he has for Pioneer football, and can’t wait to watch the continued success throughout the years.”
The Arnolds’ gift helps support a graduate assistant position for the UW-Platteville football program—an addition which has multiple benefits, said Dr. Kristina Navarro, Assistant Chancellor and Director of Athletics and Recreation.
“This year, we were able to bring on our first ever female wide receivers coach and Director of Football Operations,” said Navarro, of Coach Kearstin Schweitzer. “Coach Kea has been a phenomenal addition. The Arnolds’ gift also helps with graduate recruitment, as the graduate assistant must be enrolled in the graduate Sport Administration program.”
A recent estate gift from Frank and Mary Jean Hlavac will make an impact on current and future students across all three of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s colleges—a testament to the couple’s generosity and love for education.
Mary Jean and Frank attended UW-Platteville in the 1940s, known at the time as the Platteville State Teachers College. They both taught for more than 25 years, most of it in the Monona Grove School District in Monona, Wisconsin, where Frank also served as the head basketball coach. In 1978, the couple retired from teaching and devoted their time to their Angus beef cattle business, which brought them all over the country to attend shows. Frank passed away in 2015 and Mary Jean in 2021.
“Frank and Mary Jean both received their degrees from UW-Platteville and participated in a multitude of activities while on campus,” said David Saether, a long-time friend of the couple. “They were good-hearted people and well-liked in the community. Giving back is just who they were as people. They had no children of their own, but they had big hearts, cared deeply about their students, and education was important to them.”
The Hlavacs’ $450,000 legacy gift will support several initiatives that were important to them. The Robert P. Hlavac Memorial Scholarship Fund received $150,000. The fund provides scholarships to students majoring in engineering and was created in memory of Frank’s brother, who died in World War II before having the opportunity to go to college. The estate gift also designated $150,000 to UW-Platteville’s Beef Center.
Mary Jean also had a love of art and design. For this reason, the couple’s estate gift included $150,000 for the UW-Platteville Art program, which Mary Jean was a strong supporter of and believed to be an area critical for education. The gift is already making a big impact on students. It has provided the opportunity for the Art program to upgrade outdated equipment and add new equipment, including a large format inkjet printer; iPads, Apple pencils and other drawing displays for creating digital art; and a tabletop combination press for lithography and etching for printmaking. The program will also be adding an outdoor covered pavilion for the sculpture yard that is located directly behind the Art Building and an additional gas fired kiln for the outdoor sculpture yard.
“The visual arts are an extremely important part of all of our lives,” said Gregory Nelson, Professor of art at UW-Platteville. “We interact with the visual arts in some capacity every day. It is important and critical to support students in ways that allow them to be creative, solve problems in unique ways, and develop and promote a culture of creative thinking. Students need the space, time, and resources that will allow them to explore, experiment, and create. This gift will allow our students to expand the projects they create, look at their work in new and exciting ways, and develop the skills and knowledge needed to be competitive and successful.”
To recognize Mary Jean’s love of and dedication to the arts, the painting studio in the Art Building was dedicated and named in her honor in 2008.
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS OUR BEST FUNDRAISING YEAR IN THE FOUNDATION’S HISTORY. BY BEING A PART OF OUR $7.4 MILLION FUNDRAISING TOTAL, YOU HELPED SUPPORT STUDENTS, FACULTY, COACHES, AND STAFF REACH THEIR FULLEST POTENTIAL.
