UW-PLATTEVILLE HISTORY
For over 150 years, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville has been an educational leader thanks to a determined Pioneer attitude that has enriched Southwest Wisconsin and the tri-state region of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa.
The university was founded in 1866 as the first state teacher preparation institution in Wisconsin, then called the Platteville Normal School. Classes were held in Rountree Hall, located at the corner of Main and Elm streets. Rountree Hall was actually built 13 years earlier in 1853 to accommodate the rapidly increasing enrollment of the Platteville Academy, founded in 1839 (even before Wisconsin’s statehood) by the city’s Presbyterian Church.
UW-Platteville also has roots in the Wisconsin Mining Trade School, established in 1907 to train specialized technicians to work in the mining operations surrounding Platteville. When the Normal School vacated Rountree Hall for its new quarters in Main Hall, the mining school moved in. In 1917, a third year was added to the curriculum, making the Wisconsin Mining School the first school in the United States to offer a three-year study in mining engineering, upon completion of which a student received a diploma.
One of the university’s oldest traditions originated in the year 1936 when the mining school students began work on the world’s largest “M” by placing rocks in a pattern on the southwest slope of the mound, located a few miles east of the city. Completed the following year, the “M” measures 214 x 241 feet and consists of some 400 tons of whitewashed stone. The lighting of the “M” is now the featured ceremony each fall during Homecoming.
The mining school became the Wisconsin Institute of Technology in 1939 and later merged with the Platteville State Teachers College in 1959 to become the Wisconsin State College and Institute of Technology at Platteville.
During the 1960s, the college experienced a period of rapid growth resulting in the construction of several new halls. In 1966, the name was changed again to the Wisconsin State University-Platteville. The university and all other public institutions of higher education in Wisconsin merged in 1971 to form the UW System, governed by a single Board of Regents. As a result of the merger, the university experienced its most recent name change to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
THE UNIVERSITY MACE
The Mace, as described in ancient history, is a symbol of authority. During Medieval Times it was a studded, club-like weapon made of iron and capable of breaking armor. By the 13th century, the Mace was used for civil purposes and was carried in processions of dignitaries. Today, the Mace is used by universities to represent order, authority, and the power of knowledge.
The university Mace is 4 feet long and made of black walnut and brass. The university seal is the most prominent feature of the Mace. The seal includes the founding date of this university—1866—and icons from our past including a bell, representing our roots in education, and an “M,” signifying our heritage in mining. UW-Platteville’s Mace was created in 2002 by graduate student Andy Van Slett, and his advisor, Dr. Kyle Metzloff, Professor of industrial studies.

PRINCIPAL SPEAKERS
TIM HERRICK
9 a.m. | College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science
12:30 p.m. | College of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture
Tim Herrick earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology from UW-Platteville, before building an extraordinary 42-year career with General Motors, where his ability to bring people together and deliver results led him through a wide range of leadership roles. He began his journey as a reliability engineer, later serving as a development engineer and design release engineer before moving into positions of increasing responsibility—including vehicle chief engineer, global chief engineer, executive chief engineer, and ultimately vice president of Global Product Programs.
In the capstone chapter of his career, Herrick served as vice president of Enterprise Launch Specialists, where he united a cross-functional team of experts to address enterprisewide challenges and advance GM’s Winning with Simplicity strategy, accelerating volume and profitability across both EV and ICE portfolios.
Herrick’s passion for developing others led him to create The Leader Foundry in 2015, a nonprofit organization dedicated to identifying and developing the next generation of leaders through scholarship, mentorship, and experiential learning.
He has been honored as a Distinguished Alumnus by UW-Platteville. He also holds an MBA from Wayne State University in Detroit. Among his career recognitions are the GM Chairman’s Honor and certification as a Red X Shainin Master.
ELLEN ULLSVIK
4 p.m. | College of Liberal Arts and Education, Associate Degree Candidates, Master’s Degree Candidates
Ellen Ullsvik graduated from UW-Platteville in 1975 with an elementary education major and a music minor. She worked at West Salem Middle School, in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, for 33 years, teaching multiple subjects in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. In 1997, she earned a master’s degree in reading as a reading specialist.
In addition to teaching, Ullsvik has performed in many theatre and musical groups in the La Crosse area at The Pump House and The La Crosse Community Theatre. She also performed in Best of Broadway, a La Crosse musical troupe, for 20 years.
After her retirement from West Salem, the district hired her to train new substitute teachers and substitute paraprofessionals. She continues to substitute teach in the district as well.
Ullsvik is active in P.E.O, a women’s organization that—through grants, awards, loans, and scholarships—helps women earn a college degree, masters’ degree, or Ph.D.
In June 2025, she completed her nine-year directorship with the UW-Platteville Foundation and Alumni Association, serving as its secretary and then as vice-chairman.
