TECH TOOLS Pioneer Portal – A customizable and easy way to access all our online resources, like your email and Canvas. You will be able to customize applications, home page layout, and web shortcuts.

When you open an internet window on any campus computer, it will open the Pioneer Portal.

PioneerLink – Use this system to learn about and get involved with student organizations and campus events.

KnowledgeBase – Find helpful articles and walkthroughs for technology-related questions and processes. Search Pioneer Portal and select the KnowledgeBase tab.

Campus email – UW-Platteville uses Office 365 for email, calendar, and other integrated apps.

Visit go.uwplatt.edu/access-email to learn how to access your UW-Platteville email.

This email address is how the university will communicate important all-campus announcements to you. It is also how you will receive communications from your classmates, professors, and supervisors at any campus job. Learning to monitor your email carefully is one of the best ways to stay on top of things.

SharePoint – The internal, password-protected website for the campus community, also called Campus Hub. Use SharePoint to find the most up-to-date information about campus resources and departments.

Duo – The tool we use for two-factor authentication, which pairs something you know (your password) with something you have (your cell phone). Everyone in the university community is a potential target of phishing attempts, and having this extra layer of security is important to keeping everyone’s information safe. ITS strongly recommends enrolling a second device in the event your primary device is not available. You may also generate a list of one-time-use backup codes for those times when your phone dies or you forget it somewhere.

PASS – UW-Platteville uses the Pioneer Administrative Software System for many different student and staff functions, including registration, payments, financial aid review, administrative purposes, updating and maintaining student records, and more.

Canvas – The online course management system used for classes or supplemental training.

Professors can post readings or assignments in Canvas, you can submit assignments or take quizzes, and your professors can post your grades and provide feedback on assignments. An on-campus job might have you enroll in a training environment within Canvas.

Navigate360 Student – An online student success tool that helps students stay organized and engaged on campus. Students can use Navigate to schedule appointments with tutors and advisors, access information about campus resources, stay up to date on important events and deadlines, and connect with other students in their classes. Students can download the Navigate360 Student app on their smartphones or access Navigate360 Student from the Pioneer Portal.

Handshake – Students can use Handshake to search for on- and off-campus employment opportunities, schedule appointments with career specialists in our Career and Professional Development Office, and more.

YOU@UW-Platteville – A confidential portal that provides personalized content centered on well-being and overall success of students. Students can use the assessment tool to identify their academic or personal strengths and areas of growth.

Users are instantly provided appropriate on campus and virtual resources and services to help them achieve their goals.

Submit a photo for your university student ID card. Pick up your ID card at your Orientation Day! GET ORIENTED Your Orientation Day will be an exciting day to meet other new students, become more familiar with campus and its resources, and learn what it takes to be successful at UW-Platteville.

GET REGISTERED FOR CLASSES First-year students at the Platteville campus will register for classes during their Orientation Day. Transfer students at the Platteville campus and all Baraboo campus students will receive an email from an academic advisor to set up an academic advising and registration appointment.

GET EXCITED! After Orientation Day, additional information will be sent over email to ensure students are ready for their first day of class.

This will include information about parking permits, textbook rental, Zoom Q&A sessions, residence hall move-in, Welcome Weekend, and more!

LIVING ON CAMPUS Residence Life The residence halls at UW-Platteville strive to provide safe, clean, comfortable, and inclusive living environments as well as opportunities for individuals to be active participants in creating respectful and responsible learning communities.

RESIDENCE LIFE STAFF Resident assistants are trained to help residents with the transition to college, struggles of relationships, providing programs, and upholding the Department of Residence Life Policies. Resident directors are professionals who oversee the residence halls.

They provide ongoing training to the residence hall staff, resources to residents, and meet with residents who violate residence hall polices. We have these policies in place to support our mission of providing safe, clean, comfortable, and inclusive living environments for every resident.

ROOM ASSIGNMENTS Room assignments for the fall semester are emailed in late June and assignments for the spring semester are emailed in late December. Please make note that we assign room locations based on when you completed your Housing Contract and then assign roommates based on how you answered the Housing Contract questions to assure a successful match.

After you receive your roommate information, please reach out to your roommate directly to get to know each other and discuss what each roommate plans to bring. We don’t suggest relying on social media to learn about your new roommate—reach out and say hello.

LOFTS Loft rental links will be available after room assignments have been sent out. Loft rentals will depend on what building you live in. Buildings using wooden lofts are contracted through Residence Life. Metal loft buildings are contracted through an offcampus company. Our bed loft section of our website details which buildings offer which loft.

BICYCLE STORAGE For students living on campus in the residence halls, bike racks are available outside each hall for bike parking. Covered bike lockers are available in several locations near the residence halls. Bike locker rentals are done on a first-come, first-served basis within each residence hall. When students arrive on campus, they can speak with their residence hall’s front desk staff to pay and get a key for a bike locker.

EATING ON CAMPUS Dining Services Dining Services provides tasty, convenient, and balanced meals at locations across campus. Eating balanced meals can help fuel your body throughout the day and keep you focused in the classroom.

Dining Plan options DINING DOLLAR PLANS First-year and sophomore students living in the residence halls, under the age of 21, are required to participate and may choose from one of the four Standard Dining Dollar Plans. Junior and senior students living in the residence halls may choose from one of the Standard Dining Dollar Plans or one of the Junior/Senior Dining Plans.

To be eligible for a Junior/Senior Dining Plan, you must have completed 60 post high school credits or be over the age of 21.

First-year and sophomore students who commute are able to choose from one of the Standard Dining Dollar Plans or one of the Commuter Dining Plans.

Junior and senior students who commute are able to choose from one of the Standard Dining Dollar Plans, Junior/Senior Dining Plans, or Commuter Dining Plans.

ADDITIONAL DINING PLAN INFORMATION • New Dining Dollar Plan funds are added to your account at the beginning of each semester.

• Fall Dining Dollar balances carry over to the spring semester with the purchase of a spring Dining Plan.

• Dining balances left at the end of spring semester will not transfer to the following academic year.

• Dining Plan pricing is per semester.

• Additional funds can be added to your Dining Dollar Plan by going to eAccounts. There are no additional transaction fees for adding additional funds.

Dining Dollars vs. Campus Cash DINING DOLLARS Dining Dollars are funds you receive from a Dining Plan that you purchase. Each Dining Dollar is equivalent to $1 and offers discounts depending on the type of purchase.

CAMPUS CASH Campus Cash is available to all UW-Platteville students and is accepted in all dining locations, the University Store, campus printing, and for laundry machines in the residence halls. Campus Cash offers a 5% discount only on Dining Services purchases.

Campus Cash remains active throughout your entire career at UW-Platteville.

Students may purchase additional Dining Dollars and Campus Cash at any time during the semester at the Dining and Campus Card Office and online at eAccounts, regardless of Dining Dollar Plan choice.

Menus, nutrition, food allergies, and dietary needs Our goal is to provide an inclusive dining experience. It’s important to us that you feel safe eating on campus. Digital menu boards on display at each dining venue provide allergen and other ingredient information. Nutrition and ingredient information can also be found on our online Menu System. Pioneer Provisions Nearly one in three UW-Platteville students have experienced food insecurity at least once per semester. Pioneer Provisions is a free pantry/grocery service on campus located in Glenview Commons. Pioneer Provisions is set up in a shopping-style format, and students can take what they need. Some high-demand items may be restricted. Volunteer staff will be present during open hours to assist with questions or special requests.

PAYING FOR COLLEGE Financial Aid and Scholarships Office, Cashier’s Office The Financial Aid and Scholarships Office assists students in financing their educational expenses through federal, state, institutional, and other aid programs. When administering these programs, our dedicated staff works with all prospective and current students, families, and members of the campus community.

Tuition and fees can be paid with cash or check at the Cashier’s Office. Credit or debit payments can be made online through PASS. The Cashier’s Office also processes refunds, scholarships, and online payments. Students may grant a third party (for example, a parent) access to certain features within PASS. WHAT IS FINANCIAL AID? Financial aid consists of grants, loans, student employment, and scholarships. These resources may assist you with meeting your educational expenses at UW-Platteville. Visit our website under “Types of Aid” for additional information and eligibility requirements.

HOW DO I RECEIVE FINANCIAL AID? Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for federal, state, and some other types of aid. The application is available online at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa. UW-Platteville’s FAFSA school code is 003921. You must be admitted to the university before your aid application can be processed.

The aid you receive will depend on your eligibility as determined through the FAFSA, state and federal regulations, and the availability of funds for specific programs with limited funding. Visit the Financial Aid and Scholarships website for more information about the financial aid and scholarship process.

WHEN DO I RECEIVE MY AID? Students will be notified by email if anything additional is required to create their aid package. Students will be directed to log into PASS to review their aid eligibility and next steps. Aid disbursement begins on the first day of each term. Funds are first applied to the student’s account and any remaining funds are issued to the student. Review the Cashier’s Office information for options on how to receive a refund.

To receive a loan, students must complete three steps: accept the loan in PASS, complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) and complete entrance loan counseling. Loans will not be disbursed until all three are completed.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION • Complete a new FAFSA every academic year to receive aid for that year. It does not roll over.

• Dropping a class or withdrawing from all classes may affect your aid, which means you may owe funds back to UW-Platteville.

• In order to continue receiving aid, you must maintain satisfactory academic progress.

• Aid packages are initially created projecting full-time enrollment (12 or more credits). Aid packages will be adjusted at the start of each semester for students not attending full-time. This may mean a reduction in the amount of aid the student is eligible to receive. Many aid types require a minimum of 6 credits.

• Tuition bills are generated approximately one month before the start of the semester by the Cashier’s Office. An email notification is sent to the student when their bill is available to view in PASS. Invoices and billing do not reflect anticipated financial aid.

WORKING ON CAMPUS AND DEVELOPING YOUR CAREER Student employment UW-Platteville offers many different types of employment opportunities across all departments, including Dining Services, Pioneer Farm and Greenhouse positions, academic assistants who support our instructors, and office assistants who support university functions.

REASONS TO WORK ON CAMPUS Working on campus allows students to gain work experience with the benefit of flexible hours and scheduling to match class requirements. Working on campus gives students a convenient way to earn money without having to leave campus.

HOW TO GET A JOB On-campus jobs are posted to an online job board called Handshake. Browse Handshake for the latest job openings.

NEW HIRE PROCESS If a student is hired for an on-campus position, the student must provide documentation and complete the required forms to verify eligibility to work. The Student Employment Office will directly communicate with the student regarding what paperwork needs to be completed.

WORK-STUDY Some students may have Work-Study as part of their financial aid package. Work-Study gives students a bank of funds that can only be paid to them through on-campus employment. The Financial Aid and Scholarships Office will send communication to students who have Work-Study as part of their aid package. Work-Study financial aid is not applied directly to tuition.

NOTE: Work-Study is NOT a requirement to work on campus. Students who do not qualify for Work-Study are encouraged to apply for on-campus employment as well.

FINDING SUPPORT AND BUILDING COMMUNITY TRIO Student Support Services TRIO Student Support Services is a program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. We provide a variety of free support services to help our participants become successful college graduates. TRIO-SSS offers: • • • • • •

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? Prospective TRIO-SSS participants must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S., working on their first bachelor’s degree, and meet at least one of the following eligibility criteria to qualify for our FREE services: • • •

Be a first-generation college student (neither parent currently has a four-year college degree) Be an income-eligible student (based on taxable income level) Be a student with a documented disability

Students interested in becoming a TRIO-SSS participant need to attend a 30-minute information session and complete a short application.

Wright Center for Non-Traditional and Veteran Students The Wright Center’s goal is to provide access to resources and programming that assist non-traditional and veteran students in making a successful transition to UW-Platteville and support their needs while pursuing their education. Non-traditional students may include students who have any of the following characteristics: • • • • • • • • •

The Wright Center provides guidance and resources for using military or veteran education benefits, information to help students prepare for mobilization, as well as returning to the university after mobilization.

The Wright Center provides non-traditional and veteran students a space for meetings, studying, or just hanging out. The center includes computers, quiet study rooms, mini-fridge, microwave, and a separate reservable meeting room.

FINDING SUPPORT AND BUILDING COMMUNITY Disability Access Center The mission of the Disability Access Center is to create an accessible, inclusive, sustainable learning environment, where disability is recognized as an aspect of diversity that is integral to the campus community and to society. The Disability Access Center collaborates with students, faculty, staff, and the campus community to facilitate equal access and full inclusion of disabled individuals through innovative services, programs, and partnerships.

Students looking to request accommodations should do so before the start of the semester, so they can be in place when classes start.

Submit current documentation of your disability. Accommodations are available based on documentation of a disability and a personal interview process. If you are unsure if you qualify or have enough documentation, please contact DAC to discuss your situation further.

DAC staff will verify that the documentation satisfies disability guidelines and inform you if you are eligible or if further documentation is needed.

Once you are determined eligible for accommodations, you will need to schedule an intake meeting with a Disability Specialist to create a VISA (Verified, Individualized, Services, and Accommodations) plan.

Pioneer Access Orientation is a multi-day pre-orientation program in the fall for new students with disabilities who are registered with the DAC. Student Health Services Student Health Services is a medical clinic on campus. We provide evaluation, testing, and treatment for medical problems, injuries, reproductive health, psychiatric care, and preventative health care.

TAKING TIME FOR WELLNESS University Counseling Services University Counseling Services is the primary source of mental health counseling for students at UW-Platteville campus.

Confidential, short-term counseling is provided by licensed clinicians to assist students with personal, social, developmental, academic, or career concerns related to their education progress, personal growth, and general well-being. Counseling Services staff are trained to offer general support as well as CBT, EMDR, screenings and referrals. University Counseling Services are funded through segregated fees, with no additional cost for counseling. We encourage students to take advantage of what Counseling Services has to offer.

UW Mental Health 24/7, at 888.531.2142, provides support and guidance to students seeking immediate problem-solving or facing challenging situations. Students can call UW Mental Health 24/7 anytime they are concerned about themselves or others.

A Sexual Violence Victim Advocate from the local community provides free support and legal advocacy and resources to victims and survivors of sexual violence and is on-campus Mondays and Thursdays from 8 a.m.–4 p.m. For these services, contact Family Advocates’ 24-hour hotline at 800.924.2624.

In addition to on-campus counseling, UW-Platteville has partnered with Mantra Health to provide extended access care. One-onone telepsychiatry sessions are available at no cost to enrolled students, including and on nights and weekends. Campus Recreation Campus Recreation on the UW-Platteville campus—which includes the Pioneer Activity Center and Intramurals—helps students, faculty, staff, and community members be more active and achieve a healthier lifestyle.

PIONEER ACTIVITY CENTER The Pioneer Activity Center is the athletics, recreation, and health and human performance hub of campus. Students, faculty, staff, and community members can come to enhance their level of health and fitness to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

The facility has a multitude of activity spaces throughout the on-campus complex for open recreation, varsity sports, intramurals, and classes. The swimming pool, walking track, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and racquetball courts create opportunities for social engagement and physical well-being. An 18,000-square-foot strength facility, cardio loft, and exercise studio space allows patrons to participate in our wellness initiatives and achieve their fitness goals.

USING CAMPUS SERVICES Parking Parking on the UW-Platteville campus is regulated through the entire calendar year. A parking permit is required in all university parking lots. Signs are located by each parking lot entrance designating the type of permit required. UW-Platteville parking permits will be available for the calendar year. Permits are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Please do not wait until school starts to purchase your permit.

Your license plate is your parking permit on campus. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that the correct license plate is registered with the permit. Student parking permits allow students to register up to two license plates on their permit; however, only one vehicle can be parked on campus at a time.

The Platteville Public Bus operates six days per week on a fixed schedule, and all UW-Platteville students ride free with their Campus Card. Shared-ride taxi service is available seven days per week. Campus Card The Campus Card is your official UW-Platteville identification. Your Campus Card grants you access to many things on campus. You’ll always want to keep it handy and take good care of it. If you lose it, there is a replacement fee for a new one.

USING CAMPUS SERVICES Textbook Center The textbook rental program is a unique and important way that we make a degree affordable to you. The Textbook Center provides books and other formats of course materials that you are required to have for your classes. Students pay a semester rental fee for the use of textbooks. The semester fee is the same whether you require four or 24 books. If you are a part-time student, or attending a shorter session, the fee is prorated per course credit.

BOOK PICKUP • Electronically sign the Textbook Rental Agreement in your PASS account, which is available beginning early August for fall semester and early January for spring semester.

• Print or screenshot your textbook list.

• Bring your textbook list and Campus Card to the Textbook Center during pickup hours.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION • Returning books works just the opposite. To avoid late fees or being charged for a book, materials must be returned by the last day of the semester. To avoid additional charges, your textbooks must be returned in good condition.

• The Textbook Center will use your campus email to communicate with you. Please make sure to check for email notices weekly before and after the semester begins or ends. This is when notices go out about unreturned books or changes in our procedures.

ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY When you activated your UW-Platteville account, you agreed to the Acceptable Use Policy. The Acceptable Use Policy includes topics such as copyright laws, spamming/hacking, and other criminal offenses. Review the Acceptable Use Policy.

SOFTWARE AND COMPUTER RECOMMENDATIONS UW-Platteville students are eligible for free software downloads for Microsoft Office applications. ITS does not provide a computer buying or leasing program at this time. Students interested in purchasing a computer will need to purchase them directly from a vendor; however, many manufacturers offer discounts to students. Students also have access to multiple computer labs with printers on campus.

Choosing a computer involves many factors, including personal preference, budget, and needs. ITS cannot recommend one particular product over another. We do, however, provide useful links to help you in your decision-making for computers and other hardware. The ITS FAQ provides general guidelines for purchasing computers and other equipment, as well as information on cell phone service.

STAYING SAFE ON CAMPUS University Police The mission of UW-Platteville University Police is to maintain a safe and secure environment for learning, working, and personal growth, while providing assistance to a culturally enriched and diverse population. The safety and well-being of students, employees, and the public is at the top of our priorities.

Our police officers are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These officers are sworn in State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officers with the same training and certifications as your local police or sheriff’s department.

UW-Platteville prioritizes sending notifications quickly to students and staff when there is an emergency or crime alert. Currently, the university utilizes the following methods to reach students and staff: • • • • •

There are also many tools provided to maintain a safe environment.

PIONEER ALERTS Pioneer Alerts is our text and email notification system. All students are automatically enrolled in this program unless they opt out. Parents and guardians can also receive these notifications via text and email. The student will have to enroll the parent or guardian under their Pioneer Alert account.

EMERGENCY CALL BOXES Emergency call boxes are radios that operate on the University Police radio frequency. When the “Push for Help” button is pressed, all on-duty police officers monitoring the University Police frequency, including the Platteville Police and Grant County Sheriff’s Department, receive the announcement providing the location of the activated call box alarm. Police response to the alarm does not rely on the caller’s ability to provide information on their location or ability to speak.

NIGHTLOCK LOCKDOWN University Police and Facilities have collaborated to install barricade devices in classrooms and labs throughout campus. There is a wall-mounted clear box with a piece that can be removed and inserted into the floor, allowing anyone inside a classroom to quickly and easily barricade the door from within.

RAVE GUARDIAN APP The Rave Guardian is a crime prevention and safety app that includes features such as crime tip submission, safety timer, emergency service phone numbers, campus directory, and an emergency 911 call button. The Rave Guardian app is free for students, faculty, and staff and is available for both iOS and Android devices.

ITS Safety and Security Your campus username and password is the key to all your personal information including your grades, financial information, Canvas, email, and more. Treat your password like your toothbrush—never share your campus password with anyone, even your parents. You can grant your parents or family members guest access to your PASS account so they can support you and access relevant information without knowing your password.

ITS will never ask for your username, password, or Duo passcode—not in an email, form, link, or text message. If you are having trouble logging into a system, ITS will ask you to log in first. Stay sharp and be thoughtful about emails that might be suspicious.

If you’re not sure, forward any suspicious messages to helpdesk@uwplatt.edu.

The password you set up for your UW-Platteville account is good for 365 days before you will be asked to update it. You will receive three plain text email reminders prior to the password expiring.

To keep your physical devices safe on campus, ITS recommends using locks for your laptop and to never leave your belongings unattended. In case your devices are stolen, make sure you have information like the make, model, serial number, and MAC address recorded somewhere safe. We recommend installing antivirus software on your devices.

The Karrmann Library is a hub for information on the UW-Platteville campus. Books, government publications, periodicals, newspapers, and other serial titles can be found in the library’s collections. Patrons who cannot find what they need within the UW System may use Interlibrary loan, which provides access to materials around the world.

The College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science provides academic resources to students within the College of EMS. Student Success Programs has a center in Sesquicentennial Hall that is a welcoming, inclusive space designed to foster a positive, collaborative learning environment. The Strand Associates, Inc. Center for Projects, Opportunities, Instruction, Networking and Teamwork, or CenterPOINT, is a space designed to support your academic success. It’s a great place to meet your classmates for group project meetings, study between classes, meet with a tutor or professor, use a computer, find out about college-specific events and programs, and more. Stop in and take advantage of the great resources CenterPOINT has to offer. There are also campus job opportunities for students, such as being a tour guide for the college, providing peer advising support, and working in CenterPOINT to support programming for College of EMS students and pre-college students.

Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Program The Women in STEM Program is a division within EMS Student Success Programs that provides a vibrant and engaging community for all STEM majors on campus. You can get involved in our many events through the WiSTEM Living Learning Community, Peer Mentor Program, Professional Mentor Program or attend the annual Women in STEM Banquet. GETTING INVOLVED Involvement opportunities and student organizations Getting involved through student organizations, fraternity and sorority life, and student governance is a great way to meet people who share similar interests as you. Eighty percent of students are involved with at least one organization on campus. Involvement leads to impressive leadership experiences, connects you with the community, adds to your resume, and enriches your life. In addition to making friends, getting involved on campus can build lifelong skills. Join two clubs to see if they are for you. We recommend one career- or major-focused organization and one just for fun.

Information about the over 180 student organizations and campus events can be found on PioneerLink, an online engagement tool. If you can’t find something that interests you, contact the Pioneer Involvement Center to start your own organization.

Members of student organizations will be excited to connect with potential new members at the Involvement Fair, held after classes start.

Fraternity and sorority life Joining a fraternity or sorority is a great way to enhance the collegiate experience by providing opportunities to develop important academic and leadership skills, as well as a strong sense of belonging. Members cultivate lifelong friendships and are involved with both the campus and community. These students serve the community by volunteering their time and energy.
