Welcome The UVA Center for Global Health (CGH) engages multiple disciplines across the University of Virginia, as well as across cultural, economic, and geographic divides to focus on improving health and well-being. It has been an honor working on the case and supporting the 2018 Global Health Case Competition which includes over 90 student participants, 12 outstanding faculty and guests judges representing multiple critical disciplines, and a diverse and dynamic group of peer mentors whose experiences and guidance is essential. We are delighted and proud to welcome our colleagues from the University of Rwanda, Dr. Stephen Rulisa, Dean of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dr. Paulin Banguti, Chair of Anesthesiology, and Drs. Jean Paul Mvukiyeh and Joseph Niyitegeka — each offer expertise and serve as invaluable assets to this endeavor.

In the spirit of collaboration, we’d also like to welcome each and everyone of you. Thank you for being here today.

Participants’ Competition Day Schedule 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Team Check-in & Presentation Deadline Newcomb Lobby

• Team members check in individually at the check-in table between 11:00 am – 11:20 am.

• Teams must submit their flash drives with final presentations in .ppt or PDF format by 11:20 am

• Once you turn in your flash drive, it will not be returned to you!

• LUNCH IS AVAILABLE IN THE BALLROOM

• Please be seated by 11:55 am 12:00 pm – 12:30 pm

Welcome Address Ballroom • Welcome address by Dr. Rebecca Dillingham, director of the UVA Center for Global Health

• All competition participants must be in attendance 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm

First Round of Presentations Various Locations • Teams will have 15 minutes to present, followed by 10 minutes of Q&A by judges.

• Teams awaiting their presentation time can wait in the lobby or the gallery, but are NOT permitted to watch other presentations until after they have presented 2:30 pm – 3:00 pm

Afternoon Break (judges deliberate) Main Lounge

• Opportunity to network with other competition participants and mentors

• Coffee, and the famous global health cupcakes provided 3:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Lightning Round • The winning team from each stream (five in total) present a 2-minute synthesis of their proposal using a single, static slide

• All competition participants must be in attendance

Case Summary

The case asks participants to imagine that they work  for the Chinese National Health and Planning Commission. The agency is seeking their perspectives on ways to improve the web of issues contributing to cancer villages, including but not limited to the realms of access to healthcare, protection from exposure, environmental contamination, economic and political conflicts of interest, and built environment.

Cancer villages have been an unintended consequence of accelerated economic growth in recent decades. Despite the positive human impacts of urbanization and development, rural areas located near large industrial centers bear the burden of contaminated water, air, and soil, which carry carcinogenic eects. The impact of poor environmental health is compounded by low access to preventive care and routine screenings and lack of financial support for those who have already developed cancers.

Participating teams in the 2018 UVA Global Health Case Competition are asked to create a proposal for building an innovative, eective, implementable, and financially sound solution to address these issues that will be presented to a panel of judges representing the two agencies. While they have not been given a specific monetary budget, teams must be able to provide a detailed budget for how they would implement a solution within a five-year timeframe. In addition, the idea of a sustainable project is stressed (e.g., leveraging existing resources, such as government institutions, health programs, NGOs; integrating the solution into communities).
