Welcome Case Summary

The goal of mitigating tuberculosis in Tanzania will require engaging diverse stakeholders and reflecting on the unique needs of its various populations. Tanzania is one of the top 30 countries with the highest rates of tuberculosis. Compounded with a high prevalence rate of HIV, the rate of TB is severely exacerbated. There are several other challenges that students will have to address such as regional disparities, stigma and discrimination, shortage of medical personnel, along with other existing health burdens. Likewise, because Tanzania is a country that has been subject to many colonial structures, students should consider the historical forces at play that have shaped Tanzania’s health care status. While international initiatives have been implemented to combat TB, many of them are not sustainable and do not help Tanzaniabuildastrongerandmoreresilienthealthcareinfrastructure.
