famous mariachi in the world, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán since the 1940’s until his death at the age of 95 in 2022.
Composers
Revered as the two most famous and prolific composers in Mexican music history are José Alfredo Jiménez (he wrote over 1,000 songs) and Juan Gabriel, who wrote over 1,500 songs. Both Jose Alfredo Jimenez and Juan Gabriel left us a legacy of poetic and poignant lyrics that have resonated with countless generations of listeners, proving that beneath the upbeat melodies and vibrant instrumentation, mariachi music can genuinely touch the soul.
ABolerois a genre ofromantic love songwhich originated ineastern Cubain the late 19th century. A bolero is characterized by sophisticated lyrics dealing with love.
TheHuapangoinmariachiis a vibrant style of Mexican folk music that is characterized by alternating rhythmic patterns similar to theson jaliscience. It is part of the traditional Mexican musical stylesonhuasteco, which originated in northeastern Mexico. The son huastecodates from the end of the 19th century and is influenced by Spanish and indigenous cultures. One of the distinctive characteristics is the use of falsettoby the vocalist. Another characteristic is the use of busy violin passages for the musical introductions and interludes.
The termRancherorefers to a popular genre of music from Mexico that takes its name from the ranch lands on which the style was originally performed. Although the music embraces rural themes, its popularity spread during Mexico’s Revolutionary to urban centers all over the country. Its history is intimately tied to a sense of national identity that emerged from the ashes of the Mexican Revolution, which ended almost 30 years of dictatorship. Ranchera songs are characterized by dramatic emotion and topics of love dominate the poetic lyrics.Waltz, polka and bolero

inspired rhythms accompany the singer along with sudden cries of emotion that highlight the singer’s sorrowful mood.
Golden Age of Mexican Cinema
Beginning in the 1930s, Mexico produced hundreds of Mexican films, comedias rancheras, that presented the nation with a studio packaged vision of rural life, along with the humor and music. The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema began with the premiere of the filmAllá en el Rancho Grande, and by 1950, ranchera music had become the most popular music genre in Mexico. The popularity of these films helped not only spread ranchera music but also the presence of the mariachi, who made the ranchera style an important part of mariachi repertoire. The mariachi is still an instantly recognizable figure around the world as a symbol of Mexico.
Women in Mariachi
The Popurrí De Lucha Reyes, pays tribute to the woman who is considered the very first female mariachi singer María de Luz Flores Aceves, born in May 1906 and died in June 1944, is known by her stage nameLucha Reyes. She was a Mexican singer and actress. Born inGuadalajara,Jalisco, she was popular in the 1930s and 1940s and was called the "Queen ofRanchera”. She was one of the first women to record music and her records were the first to introduce Mexican music to European audiences. Lucha Reyes paved the way for numerous female ranchera singers after her, including Lucha Villa, Lola Beltrán, and Amalia Mendoza. Her booming, emotive, and fearless voice filled the airwaves of Mexico during the first half of the twentieth century. She also appeared in several Golden Age Cinema productions alongside notable figures like Jorge Negrete and María Félix. Throughout the years that followed, women have creatively established their place within this powerful medium of cultural expression so strongly associated with men.
