Juan Carlos Castañeda (b. 1992) is a Colombian composer, clarinetist, and educator based in Portland, Oregon. Quickly becoming a fresh voice in the world of composition, especially for wind ensembles in Latin America, Juan’s works have been performed on international stages, capturing the attention of top performers. With plenty of experience as a performer, composer, arranger, and educator, he is known for this leadership and exceptional skills as a player. His deep knowledge of wind instruments enables him to create and lead ensembles effectively.

Juan’s extensive performing career includes his time as a bass clarinetist with the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra and his current role with the Portland Wind Symphony. In addition to his performing career, Juan has a strong background in music research, particularly focusing on Latin American music. This research helps him bring rich cultural influences to his compositions, blending diverse musical styles ranging from Latin rhythms and cinematic soundtracks to nostalgic touches of old pop culture.

Juan’s compositional style has been widely recognized for its creativity and innovation. In 2021, he embarked on a significant collaborative project, composing a clarinet concerto for soloist and band. Since then, his works started to gain renown, and many interpreters started to feel curious about this repertoire.

As an educator, Juan is deeply committed to fostering the growth of young musicians. Over the years, he has
