KevinDay(b.1996),anAmericanwhosemusichasbeen characterizedby"propulsive,syncopatedrhythms,colorful orchestration,andinstrumentalvirtuosity,"(RobertKirzinger, BostonSymphony)ComposerKevinDayhasquicklyemergedas oneoftheleadingyoungvoicesintheworldofmusiccomposition today,whosemusicrangesfrompowerfulintrospectiontojoyous exuberance.KevinDayisaninternationallyacclaimedcomposer, conductor,andpianist,whosemusicoftenintersectsbetweenthe worldsofjazz,minimalism,Latinmusic,fusion,andcontemporary classicalidioms.DayservesastheVicePresidentoftheMillennium ComposersInitiative,acollectiveofmorethan120composers fromseveralcountriesaroundtheworld.

AwinneroftheBMIStudentComposerAward,athree-timefinalist fortheASCAPMortonGouldYoungComposerAwardand consideredforthe2022PulitzerPrizeforhisConcertoforWind Ensemble,Dayhascomposedover200works,andhashad numerousperformancesthroughouttheUnitedStates,Russia, Austria,Australia,Taiwan,SouthAfrica,andJapan.

ShimmeringSunshineisacompositionthatdepictsthesun wheneveritispositionedathighnoon,atitsbrightestpointduring theday.Throughoutthepiece,therearedifferent"shimmers"of brightlightthatbouncearoundfrominstrumenttoinstrument, depictingmomentsofsunshinebothbeautifuland,atthesame time,powerful.

ThisworkwaswritteninconjunctionwiththeM.O.T.I.Ftriptych consortium,includingAcrossaGoldenSkybyQuinnMasonand MidnightSkylinebyJoshTrentadue.

JulieGiroux(b.1961)isanalumnusofLouisianaStateUniversity andBostonUniversity,andstudiedcompositionwithJohnWilliams, BillConti,andJerryGoldsmith.Shebeganhercompositional careerin1985writing,arranging,andconductingmusicfor televisionandfilm,includingfortheEmmyAwardwinningminiseriesNorthandSouth,Dynasty,TheColbys,KarateKidII,White MenCan’tJump,andBroadcastNews.Girouxholdsover100film, television,andvideogamecreditstohername.Sincebeginningher bandcompositioncareerin1983,muchofhermusichasbecomea stapleinensemblesworldwide.

Girouxprovidesthefollowingprogramnotes:

ThisisthestoryofanalienchildsenttoEarth,thelast survivorofadoomedplanetandcivilization.Itisastorythat hasbeencapturingtheimaginationsofearthlingssinceits firstpublishinginActionComics#1,June1938.Raisedby farmerswithlove,taughttobefair,humble,hard-working andtonevertellalie,thechildgrowsintothesontheycould neverhaveandthesuperheroeveryonecanadmire. JonathanandMarthaKentweren'tjusthisparents.They werehismentors,likerealmentorstheworldover,silently contributingtotheworldinaremarkable,Earth-defining way.

FieldsofGold(2019)tellstheearlystoryofSuperman. Thepiecestartsoutwithachild'sjourneyfromKryptonto Earth.ThenwemeettheKentsandruralAmerica.Then twotimeseventshappeninhisyounglife:whenSuperman useshispowersforgoodandwhenhecomestoterms withwhoheis,whoheistobecome.Therearescenes fromSupermanmoviesthatalwaysstrikehomewithme-whenSupermanisstandingalone,surroundedbyfieldsof goldasafarmer,asonandanhonestmanofqualityandj justworth.ThatishowIwillalwaysthinkofhim,howIwill alwaysthinkofSuperman.

GustavHolst(1874–1934)wasbornintoamusicalfamilyin Cheltenham,England.Hisfatherconductedthetown’schamber orchestraandtheyoungHolst’sfirstexperiencewithorchestration camefromwritingincuesfortheorchestra.Duringthe1890s,he studiedcompositionwithRobertBridesandCharlesVilliers StanfordattheRoyalCollegeofMusicwherehemetfellow studentRalphVaughanWilliams,whowouldremainaclosefriend forlife.OneofEngland’smostprominentcomposers,Holstwasa teacherofcompositionandorgan,aswellasaprofessional trombonist.Itwashisexperienceasatrombonistthatmadehim awareoftheexpressivequalitiesofthebrasschoirandpotentialof themilitarybandasaseriousartisticmedium.Hismusicincludes operas,ballets,symphonies,chambermusic,andsongs.Hismost popularworkistheorchestralsuiteThePlanets(1916),which musicallyportraystheplanetsasastrologicalsymbols.Hisband works,SuiteNo.1inE-flat,Opus28(1909)andSuiteNo.2inF,Op 28(1911)areuniversallyacknowledgedasthefoundationofthe seriousbandrepertoire.Theseworks,coupledwithHammersmith: PreludeandScherzo(1930),areconsideredamongtheband’s standardrepertoire.

FirstSuiteinE-flat(1909/1920)hadmorethanadecade betweenitswritinganditspremiere.Themasterworkdidnot receiveapublicperformanceuntilJune1920,bya165-piece ensembleattheRoyalMilitarySchoolofMusicatKnellerHallin London.Servingasamodelforthemodernconcertbandand comprisedofthreemovements,Chaconne,Intermezzo,and March,FirstSuiteinE-flatwasoneofthefirstsignificantoriginal workswrittenforthewindbandmedium.Holstwritesthefollowing, “Aseachmovementisfoundedonthesamephrase,itisrequested thatthesuitebeplayedrightthroughwithoutabreak”.Thefirst threepitchesthatbeginthework,E-flat,F,andB-flat,serveasthe connectorastheprimarythemeineachmovementbeginswith theexactsamesequence.Throughoutthework,thethemeis repeatedandinvertedtocreateanoriginalandconnectedwork.

MatthewJackfert(b.1988)isanAmericancomposerwhowrites forwindband,radio,TV,film,andvideogames.Inadditiontohis compositionalwork,heisaradiohostwithWestVirginiaPublic Broadcastingandperforms,writes,andarrangesforthe Appalachianrockgroup,TheCompanyStores.Hismusichasbeen performedbyensemblesincludingtheNationalSymphony Orchestra,theClevelandOrchestra,theDallasSymphony Orchestra,andseveralotherrecognizedensembles.Hiswork,On theShoresofQingdao,wasafinalistfortheMortonGouldYoung ComposersAward,andhehasreceivedtheCommissioned ComposerAwardfromtheWVMTA.Jackferthasbeenfeatured onNPR’s“MorningEdition”aswellasthenationalradioprogram “PerformanceToday”.Hereceivedhisundergraduatedegreein compositionfromWestVirginiaUniversityandhisMaster’sin CompositionfromtheUniversityofTexasatAustin.

Commissionedbyandinhonorofthe75thAnniversary PennsylvaniaCollegiateBandmastersAssociationIntercollegiate Band,TheSeaofMountains(2022)describesthebeautyand aweoftheAppalachianMountains.Thecomposerwrites:

TheSeaofMountainsreferstoanexperienceIhadflying overtheAppalachians.Itwasn’tthefirstflightI’vetakenover them,orevenaparticularlyinterestingone,butitwasthe firsttimeInoticedthemountainslookinglikewavesofan oceanformingthroughtimeontheslowestofscales.A waveformthat’salmostfrozeninplacebuiltonamassive canvas,movingataglacialpace.Inthispiece,you’llhearthe experiencesoftheflightoverthebroodingancient mountains,theebbingandflowingoftheripplesinthehills, andthespectacularviewsthey’vecreated.

PercyGrainger(1882–1961)wasanativeofBrighton,Australia.He firststudiedpianowithhismother,aprofessionalteacher,andlater withLouisPabstinMelbourne.Attheageoften,Graingergavea seriesofpianorecitalswhichfinancedhisstudiesinGermany.In 1900,hebeganhiscareerasaconcertpianist,receivingsensational successesinsuchwidelyseparatedplacesasEngland,Australia, andSouthAfrica.GraingerandhismothermovedtoAmericain 1915,settlinginWhitePlains,NewYork.AttheoutbreakofWorld WarIheenlistedasanarmybandsman,soonbeingpromotedto theArmyMusicSchool.HebecameaUnitedStatescitizenin1919 andagainmademanyworldwideconcerttours,andforsometime hewasprofessorandheadofthemusicdepartmentatNewYork University.Asacomposer,Graingerwasaremarkableinnovator, usingirregularrhythmsbeforeStravinsky,pioneeringinfolkmusic collectingatthesametimeasBartók,writingrandommusicin1905, andpredatingVarèseinexperimentswithelectronicmusic.

Children’sMarch:“OvertheHillsandFarAway”(1919)was Grainger’sfirstoriginalworkforwindband.Writtenbetween1916 and1918,thecompletedorchestrationwaspremieredbythe GoldmanBandin1919andwasrecordedbythesamebandwith Graingeratthepiano.Itwasthecomposer’sbeliefthatthe greatestexpressivitycouldbedrawnfromlow-voicedinstruments oftheband.Consequently,Graingerassignedamoreliberaland specializedroleforinstruments suchasthebassoonandbaritone saxophone—thanwhatwasconsideredstandardcompositional practiceformilitarybandsatthetime.Theresultisacharming piecewithbrightmelodies,filledwithharmonicandrhythmic surprises.
