Panhellenic Creed

The object of the Panhellenic Council shall be to develop and maintain women’s sorority life and interfraternity relations at a high level of accomplishment and in so doing to: • Consider the goals and ideals of member organizations as applicable to campus and personal life.

• Promote superior scholarship and intellectual development.

• Cooperate with member women’s sororities and the university/college administration to maintain high social and moral standards.

• Act in accordance with National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) Unanimous Agreements, policies and best practices.

• Act in accordance with such rules established by the Panhellenic Council as to not violate the sovereignty, rights and privileges of member sororities.

The purpose of Panhellenic is: • To maintain fraternity life and inter-fraternity relations on a high plane within our University.

• To further intellectual accomplishment and sound scholarship.

• To cooperate with the University Administration in the maintenance of high social standards.

• To serve as a forum for the discussion of questions of interest in the college and fraternity world.

• To compile rules governing recruiting, pledging, initiation, and other matters pertaining to Panhellenic on this campus.

• To adhere to the Panhellenic Core Ideology:

A Letter from the President To you,

Prior to college, when anyone mentioned sororities, I thought of a hazy and dark college basement, a tanked GPA and red solo cups. Anyone else? In fact, I actually vowed that the “sorority girl thing” was not for me. My stomach turns into knots when I think of how naive I was to trust a narrative about a community I had never experienced personally or one that was based on the media or TV dramas.

This letter is to affirm the community you have the potential to gain if you stand confident in who you already are. We are in the business of supporting and encouraging every woman to be who she wants to be and to celebrate who she already is today.

Our Panhellenic community is committed to promoting the positive, developing women and creating an environment of unity and fairness. This community is committed to accountability. All three of these things have everything to do with this mission. Friendship and panhellenic sisterhood look like calling each other out and in. Accountability appears in various areas of our lives and could be in regard to a shared faith, a questionable treatment of another, or in facing our own Panhellenic community’s racist history and commitment to our future. This community, when functioning properly, will challenge you to be the woman you are capable of becoming, while celebrating what you already bring to the table. To be developed as a woman is to be championed for your strengths and humbled through your areas for growth. We all have unique skill sets and it takes each of us to create a community we are proud to represent. I know this to be true: there is nothing that an organized, driven and compassionate group of women cannot accomplish.

For my college years, I wanted all that I listed above, but genuinely did not think that it could be found within the Panhellenic community. I gave Recruitment a chance and felt more myself within my chapter than I had been in a while. Since then, I have found growth, deep friendship, authenticity, and a reignited fire for what I wish to change in the world. Each woman in this community is passionate about something and contributes daily in her own sphere of influence to alter her part of the world for the better. If you desire a community that will affirm who you are currently, contribute to your success in the future, hold you accountable, and create an atmosphere for growth--we hope you see and come to know that this community can be that for you, too.

A Letter to the PNM Dear PNM,

PNMs,

We are so excited to meet each and every one of you. This experience is like none other. It provides lifelong friendships, hilarious memories, endless connections, opportunities to give back, and so much more. Reagan and I have been so fortunate to have known eachother since our freshman year when we were selected to be on JPAN together, we then both shared a vested interest in the Panhellenic community and look where we are now. Serving on Panhellenic Exec together has been one of my favorite experiences and getting to share it with the other 8 amazing women has been one of my most favorite memories. Being a part of this community has pushed me into new and sometimes uncomfortable places but has made me so much stronger. I have been surrounded by women who encourage me to be the best as I possibly can each and every day, women who celebrate you in your highs and uplift you in your lows.

First and foremost, I want to say how excited I am that you have taken interest in joining the Panhellenic community. You may be feeling excited, nervous, or everything in between-- I have definitely been there, and I can assure you that your emotions are normal and valid.

After a year of uncertainty and sadness I have seen firsthand how important this community is. This community was a beacon of light at the end of the tunnel for me. I knew that when I would return back to campus in the fall one thing would be for certain and that was the Panhellenic community full of the strongest women I know, and I am so proud to be one of them.

I want to encourage you this week. You will probably be tired and your feet may hurt and your voice may start to disappear. But remember that this week is setting you up for a lifetime of fun and people who make each day so much better.

I remember how others reacted when I told them I was going through Panhellenic Recruitment. The response was always the same: I “don’t seem like a sorority girl.”

I wondered, what about me didn’t seem like “sorority material”? Was this meant to disparage me, Panhellenic sororities, or both?

These comments seemed to reflect common stereotypes of Panhellenic (you know the ones). This was nothing like me, nor any of the women who I knew were Greek-affiliated. The sorority women I knew came from various backgrounds and were intelligent, ambitious, strong, intentional, and compassionate. These stereotypes further dissipated as a new member: I developed a greater academic discipline, leadership skills, and strong relationships with others. Without Panhellenic, I would not be the person I am today.

Serving on Panhellenic’s Exec board, I have developed friendships with some of the most incredible women, all of whom remind me daily of the value in the Panhellenic experience.

Of course, even with our ever-changing community, Panhellenic will bever be faultless. I am reminded daily of our flaws, but it reminds me of how much room we have to grow and how we can continue to commit to genuine accountability, transparency, and reconciliation. I now understand that you can simultaneously love a community and challenge it to acknowledge and grow from its imperfections. Most importantly, I am proud to be a part of a community that defies the “typical sorority girl” stereotype.

Circle of Sisterhood Here at the University of Tennessee, we have been so fortunate to support Circle of Sisterhood as our council’s inter/national philanthropy. As a Panhellenic Council, we have hosted many events to raise money for Circle of Sisterhood. Events such as Big Orange Beat, Sisterhood Showcase, and Circle of Sisterhood Week have allowed us to provide even greater support.

The University of Tennessee Panhellenic Council has been able to fund two school builds, one in Malawi and the other in Senegal. As well as the school builds, we have also given three $10,000 grants. The grants given this past year were given to Dignity Period, a foundation providing menstrual products to women around the world, and Cooperative for Education, a foundation striving to break education gaps for Guatemalan children. This year, the UTK Panhellenic community has raised $10,000 to fund a grant that will help the Foundation for Hope and Health in Haiti (FHHH), a New York-based charitable organization founded by six Haitian-American doctors to ensure all people of Haiti have access to medical care with a goal to improve social services and provide education support. The funds will support FHHH’s Education Partnerships program which funds teachers’ salaries and provides school supplies, daily meals, and access to clean water for 600 primary school age girls. The University of Tennessee Panhellenic Council is so grateful for the opportunity to support Circle of Sisterhood and we look forward to our continued support.

What is Mutual Selection?

Mutual Selection is a Recruitment style where both the Potential New Member (PNM) and chapter are voting and making decisions in the Recruitment process.

This is very similar to how residency programs are matched as well as dating apps!

Recruitment is a mutual selection process that balances the preferences of each Potential New Member with the preferences of the existing chapters she has been invited to attend. The Panhellenic Council strives to allow every potential new member an opportunity to find a chapter that best aligns with her values, interests, future goals, and personality while providing an organized and unbiased membership selection process. Invitations are only guaranteed on the first round of Recruitment, Go Greek round. There is no guarantee that a potential new member will be invited back to Philanthropy & Service Round, Sisterhood Round, Preference Round, and Bid Day. Invitations are based on the mutual selection process explained above.

Potential New Members are encouraged to maximize their options in order to meet with as many chapters as possible during the Recruitment experience. It is important to keep an open mind during Recruitment to find a chapter that suits you best!

Common misconceptions: • A PNM cannot “cut” a chapter • There is no order of PNM preference on the chapter side • Chapters will not know PNM vote (cluster vs. rank)

Pre-Recruitment Contact Sorority women are encouraged to talk to women about sorority life in general, before the formal Recruitment period begins. All sorority women including collegians, alumnae, College Panhellenics, Alumnae Panhellenics, inter/national organizations and the National Panhellenic Conference should actively promote the overall sorority experience and membership opportunities in organizations. This should be done through all forms of communication (e.g., print, digital, in person) in the spirit of Panhellenic unity and desire to reach out to all women to share the opportunity for sorority membership. College and Alumnae Panhellenic rules should not infringe on the rights of individuals, chapters and/or organizations in the content or forms of communication to promote the sorority experience.

You, as a PNM, may be in contact with active chapter members until August 1st.

Legacies & Letters of Recommendation A legacy is a PNM who is the sister, daughter, granddaughter, or of any familial relation with an alumnae sorority member. Legacies will not receive preferential treatment but are still celebrated. Additionally, many sororities have changed their policies and no longer require letters of recommendation. They can be helpful for the chapter to learn more about you, but are not a dealbreaker if you do not have them. Do not stress over finding a recommendation letter for every chapter; if you have somone who is wanting to write you one then it will be accepted from the chapters. Think of it like extra credit, it cannot hurt to have one but will not be held against you if you do not.

Covid-19 Statement and Protocol In order to protect the health and safety of all involved in Panhellenic Recruitment, and to preserve the in-person recruitment experience, the Panhellenic Executive Council at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is strongly recommending wearing masks during indoor Recruitment events. Additionally, some chapter houses may require face coverings while hosting indoor recruitment events in order to follow directives from their inter/national headquarters. Please be prepared to bring your own masks for the duration of the recruitment process. We will have some masks available, but will have limited quantities. If you have any questions about COVID-19, please refer to the university’s website.

Covid-19 Vaccine Clinics The university strongly recommends that all students be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The vaccines are safe, effective, and free and the university strongly recommends them for students, faculty, and staff. Being fully vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and gives you the best chance for a full college experience.

The university will offer an optional COVID-19 vaccine clinic in the Thompson-Boling Arena concourse before the start of PNM Convocation vaccination for those age 18 and older. The clinic will run from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on August 11. Attendees that choose to get the vaccine will receive the first dose of the two-dose Moderna vaccine. Pre-registration for the vaccine clinic is strongly encouraged, but walk-ins are also welcome. PNM Bill of Rights

You, as a PNM, have the right to a positive Recruitment experience. If you feel in any way that any of these rights have been violated, contact your Recruitment Counselor or a member of the Panhellenic Recruitment Team immediately.

1. The right to be treated as an individual.

2. The right to be fully informed of the Recruitment process at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

3. The right to ask questions and receive true, objective answers from the Recruitment Counselors and Sorority Organization Members.

4. The right to be treated with respect.

5. The right to be treated as a capable, mature person without being patronized.

6. The right to ask how and why and receive straight answers.

7. The right to have and express opinions to Recruitment counselors, without fear of them being unjust or wrong.

8. The right to have inviolable confidentiality when sharing information with Recruitment Counselors.

9. The right to make informed choices without the undue pressure from others.

10. The right to be fully informed about the binding agreements implicit in the MRABA. 11. The right to make one’s own choice and decision and accept full responsibility for the results of that decision.

12. The right to have a positive and enriching Primary Recruitment experience.

MRABA The MRABA is a contract that each PNM will sign at the end of Preference Round during Recruitment. At this point, she may have up to three chapters left on her schedule. When viewing the MRABA, she has three options.

She may choose to not complete the form, therefore withdrawing from Recruitment.

She may list all chapters from which she is willing to accept a bid in preferential order.

She may limit her choices by putting down only one chapter; however, this does not guarantee that she will receive a bid from the respective chapter.

If a PNM receives a bid but chooses not to accept her invitation, she must wait a full calendar year before participating in any Panhellenic Recruitment process. She is not eligible for Continuous Open Bidding until this period.

DEI Statement As Panhellenic women, we strive to build and embody the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our community. Our commitment to these values is unwavering and pushes us to build positive environments throughout our council and campus community. Inequality, exclusion, and any form of discrimination will not be tolerated within Panhellenic. We are continuously taking steps to make our Panhellenic community inclusive and equitable. We have developed a diversity, equity, and inclusion roundtable with a representative from each of the 13 Panhellenic Chapters to promote education and awareness of our values. Without the willingness to learn, we will not be able to move forward as a community. Let us empower and bring awareness to our differences within our Panhellenic community.

Other Councils Being a part of any Greek council at The University of Tennessee Knoxville requires collaboration and a willingness to acknowledge the work and commitment of other councils besides your own. All four councils have members heavily involved in our campus community. As a Panhellenic woman, you subscribe to supporting your peers, chapters, and all councils in their service to each other and the university.

The Panhellenic Council (NPC) was founded at UTK more than 110 years ago.

Our council, like other Panhellenic councils, were founded and rooted in progression for wealthy and white women. At the time, women were just beginning to attend universities and were engaging in the fight for women’s rights.

However, it was not until the 1960s when our own council lifted restrictions barring minority women from joining our community. The future and present of inclusion require us facing and owning a past of exclusion.

IFC The Inter-fraternity Council (IFC) has a mission to develop men who lead with integrity, encourage a high level of scholarship, support the development of each chapter, promote a sense of community, and strive to set a standard of excellence for ourselves and others at UTK. The IFC community is over 145 years old and is proud of the tradition of having strong and successful men’s fraternities. At UTK, we have 18 active IFC fraternities. These include Alpha Epsilon Pi, Alpha Gamma Rho, Alpha Tau Omega, Beta Theta Pi, Beta Upsilon Chi, Delta Kappa Epsilon, FarmHouse, Kappa Sigma, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI), Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Kappa Tau, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, and Sigma Phi Epsilon.

MGC Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) at UTK’s values include the increase of the awareness of diversity and inclusion, to serve the UTK and local community, and to maintain high academic standards. MGC coordinates activities that celebrate culture, uplifts personal/ professional development, and engages in working across differences. Most multicultural greek councils were founded in the Northeast region of the U.S. as these states were more culturally diverse and accepting and had, “a rich mosaic of cultures.” The celebration of all cultures is their main focus, with no single culture being specifically emphasized. Majority and minority students are a part of these organizations. These councils became appealing to college students that were biracial, bicultural, recent immigrants, or who had simply grown up with a different cultural lens that caused them to identify with or seek knowledge of other cultures. Many founding members of these councils were students who exemplified cultural pride and wanted to share it with their peers, while simultaneously seeking to learn of other cultures. At UTK specifically, we have six out of ten MGC fraternal organizations. They include Delta Phi Lambda Sorority Inc., Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc., Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc., Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc., Lambda Phi Epsilon International Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Sigma Rho Sorority, Inc.

National Pan-hellenic Council (NPHC) at UTK’s values include Culture, academic achievement, diversity, community service, leadership, social justice advocacy, and lifetime brotherhood and sisterhood. NPHC organizations are committed campus leaders that produce and engage in educational and social activities. NPHC was founded on May 10th, 1930 at Howard University in Washington, DC. Each of the nine NPHC organizations evolved during a time where African Americans were being denied essential rights and privileges afforded others. Racial isolation on predominantly white campuses and social barriers of class on all campuses created a need for African Americans to align themselves with other individuals sharing common goals and ideals.

At UTK, we have eight out of the Divine Nine. What is a Gamma Chi?

At the University of Tennessee, our Recruitment counselors are referred to as “Gamma Chis.”

Gamma Chis are members of the Panhellenic community and represent all 13 chapters. However, Gamma Chis cannot reveal what chapter of which they are a member; this is referred to as “disaffiliation.” When Gamma Chis disaffiliate from their own chapters, it allows them to guide PNMs through the Recruitment process without bias towards a specific chapter.

When PNMs go through Recruitment, they will be assigned into a Gamma Chi group. During orientation, Gamma Chis will preview what the week of Recruitment looks like and answer any questions PNMs may have. Each day during Recruitment, Gamma Chis will give PNMs their Recruitment schedules.

PNMs can also rely on their Gamma Chis for advice and guidance throughout Recruitment.

Organizations Within Panhellenic The Panhellenic Mentor Program The Panhellenic Mentor program is an all new mentorship where New Members are put into randomly selected groups and are given two mentors. Our Panhellenic Mentors are typically upperclassmen who have decided to give back to the community, and help adjust New Members to life at UTK and in Greeklife. Mentors will join their New Members during New Member Week, provide opportunities for involvement, and be another role model for them during their New Member Journey. The Panhellenic Mentor Program bridges the gap between New Members, Upperclassmen, and all 13 Panhellenic Chapters. Applications to become a Panhellenic Mentor typically open in the Fall.

Junior Panhellenic Council (JPAN)

JPAN celebrates Month of the Scholar by handing out free Doughnuts in Sorority Village!

The Junior Panhellenic Council (JPAN) is a division of the Panhellenic Council composed of leaders, aspiring to enhance the New Member Experience. JPAN puts on their annual “New Member Week ‘’ which is a week filled with events, raffles, and games to celebrate our New Members. In addition, these women host speakers, create resources, and serve as a link between our New Members and Panhellenic. Applications to serve on the Junior Panhellenic Council typically open late in the fall, alongside Pan Unity Committee Applications.

Panhellenic Unity Committee The Panhellenic Unity Committee (Pan Unity) is a new committee of the Panhellenic Council, composed of leaders who serve to unify our 13 chapters and promote “Pan Love’’. The committee puts on Panhellenic-Wide events to create opportunities for new relationships, and to continuously show appreciation for Panhellenic and the Knoxville Community. Values Based Recruitment The Primary Recruitment process at the University of Tennessee is an exciting time that gives you the opportunity to not only learn more about our Panhellenic chapters, but also about yourself. We all have things in our lives that are important to us, otherwise known as our personal values. Each of our 13 Panhellenic sororities have specific values they were founded on and take great pride in them. Our Panhellenic community wants to have members who hold the same ideals to heart and want to improve the community and world around us.

The Recruitment process will help you identify which of your personal values align best with our chapters’ and help you figure out the place where you feel most at home. Take a look at each organization’s page in the “Our Chapters” section to learn more about their values and what they hold important to their members.

This first round will be a completely virtual round, with PNMs meeting all 13 chapters in a Zoom format. During this round, the PNM will be introduced to each chapter and begin to learn more about the organization and its members.

After meeting the chapters, PNMs will meet virtually with their Gamma Chi who will walk them through the preferencing process. This involves listing their top 10 preferences and then ranking their bottom 3 preferences. Philanthropy & Service

Sisterhood

Sisterhood Round will be over the course of one day.

During this round, PNMs could be invited back to up to 6 chapters. Again, it is completely normal and okay to not receive 6 invitations.

PNMs will learn what it is like to be a member of that particular chapter during these days. She will learn about their chapter values such as scholarship, leadership, involvement, and sisterhood. She will get to talk to members about commitments such as financial costs, housing requirements, and time obligations. This is the opportunity for PNMs to see what it is really like to be a member of that chapter, and it is a great time for her to ask more specific questions.

At the end of the day, PNMs will list their top 2 preferences and rank their bottom 4. Ranking certain preferences does not guarantee that she will/will not be invited back to a particular organization.

Preference Round is the final and most serious round of Recruitment. During this round, PNMs could be invited back to up to 2 chapters. It is not uncommon to be invited back to only 1 organization during this round. Chapters will show a more serious side of their organization, including revealing some ritual and having conversations about what the chapter means to them personally.

After attending all events they were invited to, PNMs will rank their choices in preferential order. They may only rank the chapters whose preference events they attended, and they may not go back and change their rank order after it has been submitted. They will also be asked to read and sign an MRABA, or Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement. The day you have been waiting for is finally here! Bid Day is a day full of anticipation and excitement. You will meet with your Gamma Chi in the middle of the village where she will hand you your bid with the rest of your Gamma Chi group. With all of the PNMs around you we will count you down and you will open your bid! It’s a scene of mass chaos as you run home to your new chapter but the most fun moment of the whole week! You are now no longer a potential new member, you are a new member!!

Q

I forgot something important when I registered. Can I edit my registration?

Yes, you will have the ability to edit your registration by logging back into your account. However, you are highly encouraged to limit the amount of editing and fully complete your registration when your account is created as chapters may miss edits made, especially the closer it gets to primary Recruitment.

I didn’t get a confirmation email after registering. Should I have?

Yes, you should have received a confirmation email. The most common reason why you may have not is because you may have entered your email incorrectly. If you are using your new UTK email, make sure you have typed in @tennessee.edu.

The second most frequent problem is that the email may be going to your spam folder, so be sure to check there. The third most frequent problem is that your payment did not go through and you will be unable to log back into your account.

If this is the case, you will need to complete a new registration and try a different method of payment.

Why is my GPA from UTK different than what is says on my high school transcript?

Since every high school utilizes a different grading system and may weight certain courses differently, the Panhellenic Council utilizes the UTK calculated core GPA in an effort to have every potential new member enter into the Recruitment period on the same level.

For first-year student admission, the University of Tennessee calculates a core GPA based upon a four-point grading scale in high school courses in sixteen areas: - 4 units of English - 2 units of Algebra - 1 unit of Geometry - 1 unit of advanced math (precalculus, calculus, trigonometry, statistics) - 3 units of natural science - 1 unit of American history - 1 unit of European history, world history, or world geography - 2 units of a single foreign language - 1 unit of visual or performing art Courses in the list above that were taken as Honors are given an additional half-quality point, and courses that were taken as Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or Dual Enrollment are given an additional quality point in the calculation of the core GPA. If your Core GPA (which can be received through the Office of Admissions) differs dramatically from your high school transcript, you can upload a copy of your transcript to your registration account so that chapters can have access to both numbers.

Recruitment starts before move-in day. Where am I supposed to live?

If you are moving into an on-campus residence hall and registered for p\ Primary Recruitment, you are automatically enrolled into the early-move-in list for Primary Recruitment. More information about move-in will come from your individual Hall Director.

Individuals moving into an off-campus apartment building will need to work directly with the leasing agents. The Panhellenic Council is unable to provide temporary housing prior to people’s leases beginning.

Do I need to provide my own meals during Recruitment?

During the two days of Philanthropy & Service Rounds, the one day Sisterhood Round, and Preference Round, a meal will be provided for you. This amounts to a total of 4 meals. You will be responsible for providing meals at all other times during the week of Recruitment. When you register for Recruitment, please be sure to identify any food allergies or dietary restrictions (ex. vegan, vegetarian, dairy free, etc.) so that we can provide adequate food for your needs. Make sure you get enough sleep and eat a good breakfast every morning throughout the week in order to stay healthy and energized!

What are Letters of Recommendation, and do I need them to join a sorority?

In compliance with recommendations surrounding COVID-19, all recommendation letters need to be electronic. NO physical copies of recommendation letters (through mail) will be accepted during this time.

Recommendation letters are letters that are written by an alumna of one of our 13 Panhellenic sororities on behalf of the potential new member. Recommendation letters are done through the individual national sororities, not through the Panhellenic Council. For information about each organization’s recommendation letter process, please visit the national organization’s website. All letters must be submitted prior to August 1st to ensure that chapters have adequate time to review the information.

Recommendation letters can be helpful but are also not required in order for you to have a positive Recruitment experience and ultimately join one of our sororities. Plenty of our members came into Recruitment with no recommendation letters and ended up in the sorority of their choice.

Recommendation letters are best when they are written by someone who knows you and can speak to your character. We encourage you to seek out individuals that you know, but if you are unable to secure a recommendation for any of our sororities, please do not stress and spend an unnecessary amount of time trying to secure them. Recommendation letters will not make or break your Recruitment experience.

Please note that each sorority has its own policy as to whether or not they require a recommendation/reference and that the University of Tennessee Panhellenic does NOT have access to individual sorority Recommendation/ Reference Forms.

Only a sorority alumna, or potentially a collegiate member of a sorority, can write a recommendation to her sorority. It is also recommended that the alumna use her sorority’s official recommendation form, which can usually be found on the sorority’s national website or in the sorority’s national magazine.

Securing letters of recommendation is ultimately NOT the obligation of the potential new member, so below are a couple of things to keep in mind if you choose to seek out letters of recommendation: • If a PNM decides she wants personally seek out alumnae to write a rec of her behalf, she need only secure ONE recommendation for each of the 13 NPC chapters at UTK that participate in Primary Recruitment.

More than one per chapter is unnecessary.

• If a PNM is struggling to find alumna to write letters of recommendation, we encourage reaching out to a local alumni chapter, searching the national website, or contact the Chapter President by email and asking for recommendations on local alumni who would be willing to write one.

While there are 26 NPC sororities, when seeking letters of recommendation for Recruitment, you ONLY need letters for those 13 National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities participating in formal Recruitment at UTK. They are: Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Delta Zeta, Kappa Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Phi Mu, Pi Beta Phi, Sigma Kappa, and Zeta Tau Alpha.

If you cannot find a letter of recommendation for each of the 13 NPC sororities participating in primary Recruitment at UTK, please do not worry!

Recommendations are like extra credit—it’s great if you can get them, but they are not required.

Supplemental Academic Letters of Recommendation While chapter specific letters of recommendation are preferred, for women unable to find an alumna from each of the recognized sororities at the University of Tennessee to write a letter of rec, we have added a new option to the Recruitment application. This year as part of the Recruitment application, women participating in Recruitment may elect to submit a generic, supplemental academic letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, or principal. The individual writing the letter of recommendation does not have been a member of Greek organization; however, the letter should speak to your character as it applies to leadership, scholarship, directly through CampusDirector during registration.

What is a Gamma Chi? A Gamma Chi, or Recruitment Counselor, is a member of one of our 13 chapters at the University of Tennessee who has taken on the role of an impartial member, disaffiliated from her chapter in order to provide an unbiased opinion for the potential new members.

If I am going through Recruitment as a sophomore or going through Recruitment again, am I at a disadvantage?

No. Many women choose to go through the Formal Recruitment process as a sophomore or junior for various reasons. Sororities accept women of all ages, as long as they are full-time students and in good standing at the University of Tennessee.

What is the difference between Formal and Informal Recruitment?

Formal Recruitment is a more structured process whereas Informal Recruitment is carried out through Continuous Open Bidding. This can happen at any time during the school year, except during Formal Recruitment. To learn more about Continuous Open Bidding, visit the “Key Definitions” section.

Do most chapters at the University of Tennessee have minimum GPA requirements?

Yes, all of our chapters have the ability to set their own GPA requirements, and many have different policies and expectations for GPA requirements set by their international and/or national organization. While academics are very important, your GPA is not the only factor that is taken into account for membership selection, and you are encouraged to talk with each chapter about their academic requirements.

What if I only want one specific chapter?

Some PNMs may come into the Recruitment process only wanting to join a few specific organizations and may experience feelings of disappointment if this want is not satisfied. What if I don’t get my first choice on Bid Day? When you show up on Bid Day, your chapter is looking forward to seeing you run home. Trust the process and give the chapter a try! This happens more than you might think, and women end up loving their chapter. attendance, and other obligations. Can I work if I am in a sorority?

Each sorority has different requirements for events and time commitments.

Many have optional and mandatory events, but working a part-time job is very possible. Many students in our community hold part-time jobs while participating in their sorority. Chapters understand that many college students have jobs and do their best to work with members to meet financial, attendance, and other obligations. Additionally, many of our members pay for their dues through summer and part-time jobs.

What questions should I ask during Recruitment?

Some of the best questions to ask a chapter member are about her personal experiences with Greek life. Other possible questions include: What does your chapter mean to you?

How have you benefited from being a member of your sorority?

What kind of scholarships and award programs does your chapter have?

What is your philanthropy, and how does your chapter support it?

What kind of leadership opportunities does your chapter offer?

Remember: the way you get to know a chapter is by asking questions that matter to you.

What if I don’t visit the maximum number of chapters I’ve been invited back to each round?

During Recruitment, the number of chapters a potential new member can visit will vary from one person to the next. It is very common to not have a full schedule. The number of events you attend is not important, but the conversations you have during these rounds will help you make your final decisions about your top choices for membership. However, PNMs are expected to attend all events to which they are invited to throughout the Recruitment process. Failure to attend an event may result in a lack of invitations the following round or removal from the Recruitment process completely. Additionally, if you miss a round you were assigned, you will have to sit out the next round.

What does accepting a bid entail? What if I don’t want to accept a bid?

Once you have signed the MRABA after Preference Round, you are bound to accept membership from one of the sororities listed on the agreement. If you do not accept membership from any of the chapters listed on the agreement, you must wait another calendar year before accepting an invitation for membership to a Panhellenic sorority. Not accepting a bid during the Formal Recruitment process will make you ineligible to participate in COB. The ultimate decision of accepting an invitation for membership rests with you. If you do not feel that being a part of a sorority is for you, you can choose to decline the bid.

Will my grades be negatively affected from being in a sorority?

Statistically, women who are involved on campus have a higher GPA. The All-Panhellenic GPA is historically higher than the Undergraduate GPA and All-Women GPA. The All-Panhellenic GPA for Fall 2019 was a 3.27, while the all Undergraduate GPA for Fall 2019 was a 3.25. Each chapter has its own academic requirements and required study hours that will help you stay on track during your time at this university.

Can I still be involved in other things on campus if I am in a sorority?

Absolutely! The Panhellenic Council prides itself in having so many of its members involved in other campus organizations. Women who are more involved on campus are more likely to graduate on time and have a higher GPA. Overall, the retention rate for students in greek life is 92%, while the University retention rate is 86%.

Am I allowed to go to Fraternity houses during Recruitment/participate in Fraternity Recruitment?

No. Recruitment focuses on the values of membership and sisterhood; therefore, PNMs and chapter members are not allowed to go onto Fraternity property and must avoid consumption of alcohol during the duration of Recruitment. In addition, absolutely no woman will participate in Fraternity Recruitment. In accordance with Title IX, women cannot partake in Fraternity Recruitment events if our organizations want to continue as single sex organizations.

Is it common for women in different chapters to be friends with one another?

Yes! Panhellenic unity is so important to our community. We love working together on different service projects, fundraising, and other events.

Can I participate in Primary Recruitment and Ignite?

Yes, you do have the ability to participate in Primary Recruitment and Ignite. If you are signed up for Ignite Serves, it will conflict with our PNM Convocation but there will be an alternative session for you to attend.

I have a scheduling conflict during the week of Primary Recruitment what do I do?

Any university sanctioned events (orientation, academic advising appointments, etc.) are required, so you unfortunately may miss some events during Primary Recruitment. Please notify your Gamma Chi, who will make sure that absences are passed along to each of the chapters.

How do I know who my Gamma Chi is?

You will receive communication from your Gamma Chi both by phone and by email the day prior to Recruitment Convocation on August 10th.
