Why do you want to row at college?
ATHLETICS
Rowing is very important in my life, giving me a sense of purpose, freedom, and so much more such as confidence and discipline. I started rowing just before my father died, he competed in the 1968 Mexico Olympics and although it started as a homage to my father, it soon grew to be my passion. At 14, I started rowing competitively, and love the rush I feel during a race, and the feeling of my bow cutting through the water, the crispy sound of my boat. By rowing in college, I can further enjoy and express my love for the sport while competing at the highest level in combination with continuing my education.
What are your college sport goals?
To contribute as much as possible to a program and raise the bar both for myself and my teammates. I am looking forward to competing at big international races such as the Head of the Charles. I want to race as fast as possible and get much better and stronger in order to help my team as much as I can, whether it is in an eight or four.
What skills have you gained from being in a rowing team?
There are many factors that contribute to rowing fast, but hard work, discipline, and taking accountability for any situation or result are essential. I learned to trust my own abilities and stay calm even under pressure. Rowing has given me confidence and good communication skills which are essential in a competitive environment. Outside of skills, rowing has given me a close-knit community and valuable friendships and I believe my social and academic “ successes” has been through skills learnt in rowing, and I am infinitely grateful for everything the sport and community has given me so far.
Are you involved in any sports volunteer work?
• I teach kids (age 10-17) basic rowing and water safety skills twice a month
• I volunteer at national and international regattas
• I mentored some young players at the Dutch International Youth Regatta
How often do you practice?
Twice a week strength and conditioning, 4 times a week water practice sessions, plus cross-training
What are your plans for the coming season?
I will attend every national selection regatta to trial for the national Dutch u19 selection, and race at many national competitions leading up to the Dutch National Championships in March/April.
