2024 BOYS’ 18 Quarter-Finalists

COOPER WOESTENDICK (Kansas) 2024 Semi-Finalist (Fourth Place)

Thank You, Jorge!

Recognizing your dedication, achievement and service to Kalamazoo College and the USTA Boys’ 18 & 16 National Tournaments since 2016.

On April 14 of this year, Dr. Jorge G. Gonzalez announced his retirement from the position of Kalamazoo College President, effective on June 30, 2026, after ten years leading the institution.

President Gonzalez stated at the time: “Serving as K’s President has been the greatest honor of my life. After nearly a decade, it is a job I still look forward to everyday, which makes this announcement so bittersweet for me.”

During his time at K, President Gonzalez has been an avid supporter of the Kalamazoo Nationals. Attending every year, with his wife, Suzie, except for the year that he and his family attended the Olympics in Paris, he always looked forward to the first week in August with all the many matches being played.

Along with the Tournament Director Mark Riley, he was presenter of trophies and awards to the Finalists in Boys’ 18 & 16, Singles and Doubles.

His enthusiasm for the NATS during the past nine years has had a positive effect on all the many volunteers. We will miss him greatly but congratulate him for all the support that he has given the Nationals. He received the Green Jacket Award in 2021.

We are proud to have him as our 2025 HONORARY REFEREE.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Our 2024 HONORARY REFEREE BRIAN GARMAN

BRIAN GARMAN, who grew up in Mendon, Michigan, is a graduate of Cornell University and received his masters, specialists, and doctoral degrees from Western Michigan University. Now retired, he served for 44 years as Professor of Mathematics at the University of Tampa in Florida. Brian has been a worker at the Nationals for almost 50 years and was originally recruited by then-Tournament Director Rolla Anderson as Rolla’s Run ner. As such, Brian did whatever it was that Rolla needed. In short order, Brian advanced to be chair of a multitude of crucial Tournament Committees. Most notable of these were the Tower Officials, Entries & Draws, Scheduling, and On-Site Computers, as well as acting as Assistant Tournament Director.

Every point of the Nationals’ computer activity had Brian’s input. His record for getting the scheduled matches on the courts on time was absolutely amazing. He was equally successful in getting us through many, many rain-delayed days that made it possible to complete the Tournaments on time. Brian’s most significant contribution to the Nationals was his development of The Garman System, a computer system to manage the tournament, and a formula for how many matches to schedule each half hour. Brian gathered court time data from the 1978, 1979, and 1980 tournaments and used this information to write his program. In 1980, he began scheduling the Nationals using his method. In 1982, he presented his findings to the USTA who adopted The Garman System for scheduling their tournaments. The method was also adopted for use at the NCAA Tennis Championships. In 2009, he was rewarded for developing this unique system by being inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame, as well as receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Mathematics of Western Michigan University. Brian received the Kalamazoo Nationals Green Jacket in 1991. Congratulations to Brian Garman our 2024 Honorary Referee.

Brian Garman receives the 2024 Honorary Referee Award with long-time volunteer Julie Lang Gibson, presented by Mark Riley, Tournament Director.

2024 Bobby Kaplan Sportsmanship Award for Boys’ 16: GUS GRUMET (California)

The Kalamazoo National Championships knew Bobby Kaplan well: a dedicated coach, a fair and knowledgeable official, a distinguished sponsor, and a dear friend of this tournament. In 1977, following his death at the age of 33, the Eastern Tennis Association established the Bobby Kaplan Sportsmanship Award. This trophy, a lasting memorial to a true friend of tennis, will be presented annually to the Boys’ 16 participant who in the opinion of the Championships Committee best combines outstanding sportsmanship with outstanding ability.

In 2024, the Boys Nationals featured the wheelchair division for the third year, and welcomed World Team Cup champions Charlie Cooper of La Quinta, California, and Tomas Majetic of Boulder, Colorado. The two faced off in a singles match, with Cooper emerging victorious in a third set tiebreak. Cooper and Majetic also played an up/down wheelchair match with brothers Meecah and Kaylan Bigun. This was the first time this event has been featured at the Nationals. Cooper and Meecah Bigun walked away victorious.

Following the Boys’ Nationals in Kalamazoo, Cooper and Majetic teamed up to compete in the 2024 US Open Junior Wheelchair Doubles, finishing as finalists. Cooper also went on to win the US Open Singles Championship title, defeating Ivar van Rijt (Netherlands) with a score of 7-6 (2), 6-3.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR

Jacque Jennings-Carter

In the mid-to-late 1970s, Jacque was invited to join the Tournament’s Marketing and Promotion Committee, then chaired by John Sellers, owner of Kalamazoo’s Target Marketing. John chaired the Committee for several years and upon his retirement, Jacque stepped up as Committee chair. The Marketing and Promotion Committee began the light pole banner program in downtown Kalamazoo. She served in this capacity for a number of years and reported to legendary Tournament Director Rolla Anderson.

After a several-year hiatus to raise her daughter, Jacque was invited to join the Marketing, Advertising and Promotion Committee as a member. When long-time chair, Marcia Koestner retired, Jacque began her many-year term as chair.

Jacque received the Distinguished Service Award in 2018 and the Green Jacket Award in 2023.

Jacque has been a lifetime ambassador and promoter for the Tournament wherever she goes. Her involvement, dedication, and commitment will be difficult to replace. Her invaluable input will be sorely missed.

Through the years with long-time Tournament volunteer Bud Donnelly

Charles “Bud” Donnelly was a born-and-raised Kalamazooan. In the early 1950s, during his teenage years, Bud began his association with the Nationals. At that time the courts were red clay and needed constant maintenance, such as sweeping to remove debris, watering to keep the surface moist, rolling to compact the surface, and line maintenance. Bud was one of the young men who maintained the courts during the Tournament. He had also taught himself the game of tennis and went on to play collegiate tennis at Western Michigan University. At WMU, he was a record holder in both singles and doubles, before being inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame. With this strong Kalamazoo background, he would naturally become involved with the inner workings of the Tournament.

We are also extending deep and heartfelt sympathy to the families of Sonja Fischer, Janet Holtgrieve, Cherie McDaniel and Bill Van Dis. Sonja was an ardent long-time supporter of the Nationals and a member of the Fischer family, who underwrote the original construction and subsequent renovation of Fischer Tower and the addition of the bleachers around courts 1-3 at Stowe Stadium. Jan chaired Singles Registration for many years. Cherie worked in the Tower and with player registration. Bill was a longtime sponsor, volunteer and supporter of the Tournament. Their kindness, generosity and enthusiasm knew no bounds, and they will be missed deeply.

Bud began his teaching career at Mattawan High School, continuing at Battle Creek Lakeview High School, and then to University High School in Kalamazoo. In 1963, he transitioned to Western Michigan University, spending the next 35 years as Associate Dean of Students.

Bud was a well-known, long-time Umpire for the Tournament. He also served as Co-Chair of the Regional Relations Committee for many years with his wife, Carol. Early each summer, they spent hours checking in with area tennis clubs, realtors, restaurants, and businesses to deliver tournament posters, ticket brochures, and placemats to advertise the upcoming Nationals.

In the 1990s, when the Nationals needed additional courts because of the expanded draw, Bud was appointed as WMU Liaison by long-time Director Rolla Anderson. As site director of WMU, his working knowledge of the University and the Sorensen Courts was extremely helpful in facilitating the expanded court situation.

Bud was awarded the Green Jacket in 1997. We will miss his ready smile and all-around willingness to promote the Kalamazoo Nationals.

On Your Retirement DARRELL DAVIES

When this year’s Tournament is ended, the Kalamazoo Nationals will have lost one of their most significant officials: Referee Darrell Davies is retiring after being a participant of the NATS for almost 50 years.

Tennis has been a part of Darrell’s life since high school and college, where he attended Butler University and Western Michigan University. He successfully coached the Men’s Tennis Team at Kalamazoo Valley Community College for 30 years, retiring in 2005. He was inaugurated into the College Coaches Hall of Fame in 2000.

His years with the Nationals began in 1979, when he began serving as a scorekeeper and as a supervisor for the ballrunners. He began officiating matches in 1985. He worked closely with the then - Referee, David Markin, and became Assistant Referee and Chief of the Umpires in 2000; he became Head Referee in 2006, and received the Green Jacket Award in 2005.

He reflected: “My fondest memories are of the fine fellow umpires I have known and worked with over that time. Life’s experiences shape us into who we become. I have become a better person from my experiences as an umpire. I thank... all the players, coaches and parents I have interacted with over my 40 years of officiating that helped me become that better person.”

Referee Darrell Davies will be missed...

The extra mile is never crowded.

2024 Bill Talbert and Scholar Athlete Award Winners

The USTA presented two prestigious junior tennis awards for 2024: The Bill Talbert Junior Sportsmanship of the Year Award and the USTA Scholar Athlete Award.

The Bill Talbert Award is given in honor of 1967 Hall of Famer, Bill Talbert, who was highly regarded for his high standards of sportsmanship.

The  2024 Bill Talbert Junior Sportsmanship of the Year Award has been given to Karan Raghavendra. Karan recently graduated from Laurel Springs School in California and now attends Indiana University.

The USTA Scholar Athlete Award  recognizes one male and one female high school junior or senior, nationally ranked in the top 100. He must have an unweighted GPA of 3.75 and higher on a 4.0 scale, and must demonstrate leadership in the tennis community through strong personal character and achievements. Award recipients receive $2,000 from the Wingfield Society, an organization of USTA volunteers dedicated to preserving the history of tennis. It is named for Major Walter C. Wingfield, who is recognized as the inventor of the modern game.

Shaurya Bharadwaj received the men’s 2024 USTA Scholar Athlete Award. Shaurya graduated from Providence Day School in North Carolina and now attends the University of Pennsylvania.
