Two, Long-Serving, Computer-Astute, Behind-the-Scenes, Kalamazoo Nationals’ Workers Retire This Year After Legendary Careers... BRIAN GARMAN and JULIE LANG GIBSON... The Carriage House, located on the campus of Kalamazoo College, between Stowe Stadium and the Humphrey House, has been for many years the “inner sanctum” of the Kalamazoo Nationals. During this time, it has been occupied from mid-June to Tournament-end by the computer brain-trust of the Nationals: BRIAN GARMAN of Brandon, Florida, and JULIE LANG GIBSON of Stuart, Florida. This year, however, the Carriage House will not serve as the offices for these two, as both Garman and Gibson have decided to retire, ending their almost 5-decade stellar careers with the Nationals. BRIAN GARMAN, who grew up in Mendon, Michigan, is a graduate of Cornell University and received his masters, specialists and doctoral degrees from Western Michigan University. He has served for many years as Professor of Mathematics at the University of Tampa in Florida. Brian has been a worker at the Nationals for 46 years and was originally recruited by the then-Tournament Director Rolla Anderson. Brian has chaired a multitude of crucial Tournament Committees, most notably, Tower Officials, Entries & Draws, Scheduling, and On-Site Computers, as well as acting as Assistant Tournament Director. Every point of the Nationals’ computer activity had Brian’s input. His record for getting the scheduled matches on the courts on time is absolutely amazing. He was equally successful in getting us through many, MANY rain days that made it possible to complete the Tournaments on time. Brian’s most significant contribution to the Nationals was his development of The Garman System, a computer system for scheduling matches, a system now used throughout the United States and at the NCAA Tennis Championships. In 2009, he was rewarded for developing this unique system by being inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame and also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Mathematics of Western Michigan University for his development of The Garman System. Brian received the Nationals Green Jacket in 1991. The Kalamazoo Nationals have been very fortunate to have had the computer expertise of Brian Garman all these many years. He will be sorely missed.
A truly great volunteer is hard to find, difficult to part with and impossible to forget.
......Saluting JULIE LANG GIBSON, on Her Retirement from the Kalamazoo Nationals After Almost Five Decades of Commitment, Service, and Dedication...... JULIE LANG GIBSON, a Kalamazoo native and a Nationals’ volunteer for 45 years, began her work with the Tournament under the tutelage of Rolla Anderson. She and her family moved to Stuart, Florida in 1993, but that did not stop her from coming to Kalamazoo every summer to give her help to whatever needed doing. Julie’s tenure began as Assistant Chair for the President’s Dinner, an event formerly held at the home of the Kalamazoo College President; and she also served as the Nats Historian for 8 years. She was especially well known for the many years of hand-writing badges for the nearly 1,000 volunteers, until Brian Garman coaxed her to join the computer age. Julie has chaired many committees throughout her years of service and was the Division Chair of Special Events & Services for 9 years. Most recently, as she has joined Brian with the computer work, Julie has been the long-serving Chair of the Website, Badges, Patron Tickets, Sponsors & Corporate Patrons, Editor of the Drawsheet, and the Player Handbook. She has also assisted the USTA Kalamazoo Nationals’ Office with a variety of services. Julie has been Brian’s key assistant in all the computer work that has put the Nationals together. Julie received the Nationals’ Distinguished Service Award in 1993 and the Green Jacket Award in 2001. Julie’s involvement, dedication, and commitment will be difficult to replace. She will indeed be missed.

THOMAS PAULSELL (Washington)
The Kalamazoo National Championships knew Bobby Kaplan well: a dedicated coach, a fair and knowledgeable official, a distinguished sponsor, and a dear friend of this tournament. In 1977, following his death at the age of 33, the Eastern Tennis Association established the Bobby Kaplan Sportsmanship Award. This trophy, a lasting memor ial to a true friend of tennis, will be presented annually to the Boys’ 16 participant who in the opinion of the Championships Committee best combines outstanding sportsmanship with outstanding ability. In 1957, shortly after the death of Dr. Allen B. Stowe, longtime director of the National Junior and Boys’ Tennis Championships, a group of Kalamazoo tennis enthusiasts sought to establish a fitting and lasting memorial to the former Kalamazoo College professor and tennis coach. The group contributed a sum of money for a trophy to be presented annually to the Boys’ 18 player who, in the opinion of the National Championship Committee, best combined the qualities of outstanding sportsmanship and outstanding tennis ability. The name and hometown of the recipient are inscribed on the trophy.

FRAN GLASS accepts Distinguished Service Award (2008)...
1936 - 2019 Fran Glass was an active Kalamazoo community volunteer throughout her adult life. The Nationals considered themselves lucky to count her among their most dedicated volunteers. For many years, Fran, along with co-chair Nancy Heath, managed Doubles Registration, a particularly difficult aspect of pre-tournament procedures. The pair worked flawlessly together, and under their leadership Doubles Registration functioned effectively and efficiently. Fran was presented with the Distinguished Service Award in 2008.
