Brian Garman... from Rolla’s Runner to Honorary Referee...
A 5-decade stellar career with the
BBRIAN GARMAN, who grew up in Mendon, Michigan, is a graduate of Cornell University and received his masters, specialists, and doctoral degrees from Western Michigan University. Now retired, he served for 44 years as Professor of Mathematics at the University of Tampa in Florida. Brian had been a worker at the Nationals for 46 years and was originally recruited by then-Tournament Director Rolla Anderson as Rolla’s Runner, doing whatever it was that Rolla needed assistance with. In short order Brian advanced to act as chair of a multitude of crucial Tournament Committees, most notably, Tower Officials, Entries & Draws, Scheduling, and On-Site Computers, as well as acting as Assistant Tournament Director. Every point of the Nationals’ computer activity had Brian’s input. His record for getting the scheduled matches on the courts on time was absolutely amazing. He was equally successful in getting us through many, MANY rain-delayed days
that made it possible to complete the Tournaments on time.
Brian’s most significant contribution to the Nationals was his development of The Garman System, a computer system to manage the tournament, and a formula for how many matches to schedule each half hour. Brian gathered court time data from the 1978, 1979, and 1980 tournaments and used this information to write his program. In 1980 he began scheduling the Nationals using his method. In 1982 he presented his findings to the USTA who adopted The Garman System for scheduling their tournaments. The method was also adopted for use at the NCAA Tennis Championships. In 2009, he was rewarded for developing this unique system by being inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame as well as receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Mathematics of Western Michigan University for his development of The Garman System.
Brian received the Kalamazoo Nationals Green Jacket in 1991.
Congratulations to Brian Garman our 2024 Honorary Referee.

A Parents’ Message to a Young Athlete
You have a match today, son. I hope that you win.
I hope that you win for your sake, not mine.
Because winning is nice, it’s a good feeling.
Like the whole world is yours.
But it passes, this feeling, and what lasts is what you have learned.
And what you learn about is life.
That’s what sports is all about, life.
The whole thing is played out in an afternoon. The happiness of life, the miseries, the joys, the heartbreaks.
There is no telling what will happen.
There is no telling if you will sprain an ankle in the first five minutes or whether you will stay for the long haul.
There is no telling how you will do.
You might be a hero, or you might be absolutely nothing.
Too much depends upon chance, on how the ball bounces.
I’m not talking about the match, son. I’m talking about life.
But it’s life that the match is all about. Just as I said. Every game is life, and life is a game.
A serious game, dead serious.
But what do you do with serious things?
You do your best.
You take what comes.
You take what comes and you run with it.
Winning is fun, sure. But winning is not the point.
Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point.
Never being satisfied with what you have done is the point. Never letting up is the point.
And most important, never letting anyone down is the point.
Play to win, sure. But learn to lose like a champion.
Because if you give 100%, you will have few regrets in the game of life. — Author Unknown

MAY 2024 –MEGASARAY CLUB BELEK IN ANTALYA, TURKEY
U.S. juniors are this year’s BNP Paribas World Team Cup champions, a victory secured by a dominating 3-0 match against Australia. The team was comprised of Sabina Czauz (Thornton, CO) and returning players Charlie Cooper (La Quinta, CA), Tomas Majetic (Boulder, CO) and Max Wong (Flushing, NY). Their triumph marks the first time in seven years that the American team has won, and secures their 5th all-time title.
This year, the team went 3-0 (9-0 in matches) in round-robin play against Australia, Great Britain and the Netherlands and only lost 12 games in six sets. With five ties throughout the week, the Americans only lost one match, to Brazil, in 14 played. In an interview with USTA Southern California, Cooper states: “Coming into this year we put in a lot of work. We had that one goal in mind of getting gold, so we all knew that it would take all four of us to get it done and we had to believe in each other and stay humble. We had to put a lot of work in and I couldn’t be happier to get it done here in Turkey.”
This August, come see two of these world champions Charlie Cooper and Tomas Majetic, play at the USTA Boys’ 18 & 16 National Championships in Kalamazoo at Stowe Stadium. Their singles matches will be held —
From L to R: Wong, Casey Ratzlaff (Wichita, KS), Majetic and Cooper at the USTA Boys’ 18 & 16 National Championships in Kalamazoo, August 2023.

TENNIS SCORING
Introduction Tennis has an unusual scoring system. The score does not go up in units of one or even in units of the same amount. The first point in a game is called 15 and the next, 30. So you’d think that the next point should be 45 - but it isn’t, it’s 40. And the score of a player who has not won any points is not “nil” or “zero,” but “love.” This is said to come from the French word “oeuf,” which means egg and is shaped like a zero.
The server’s score is always called first by the umpire. So if Player A is serving to Player B and Player B wins the point, the score is love-15. If Player A wins the next point, the score is 15-all, and so on.
Games The first player to win four points wins a game. So if a player wins four points straight, the scoring will go 15-0, 30-0, 40-0, then game. The exception is if both players win three points each (i.e. 40-40) which is called deuce. Then the winner is the first player to win two points in a row.
Deuce Once the score gets to 40-40, it is known as deuce. Once at deuce, one player must win two consecutive points to take the game. The word comes from the French phrase “à deux” – meaning “at two,” as in needing two more points. If Player A wins the next point, the score is “advantage server.” If Player B wins the point, the score is “advantage receiver.” If the player at advantage wins the next point, he wins the game. If he loses it, the score goes back to deuce.
Sets The maximum number of sets in a match here at Kalamazoo is three (except in the Championship match in Boys’ 18 Singles when the maximum number of sets is five). The first player to win six games wins a set. However, if the score becomes five-games-all, one player must be two games ahead to win the set. So a player must win the set 6-4 or 7-5 and so on. Until the 1970s, this meant that sets could potentially last indefinitely. But in 1971, the tiebreak rule was introduced. Under this rule, once the score reaches sixgames-all, a tiebreak is played to decide who wins the set.
Tiebreak The first player to reach seven points wins the tiebreak and the set. But if the score reaches sixpoints-all, the winner is the first player to win two points in a row. The player whose turn it was to serve in the set serves the first point of the tiebreak. His opponent serves the next two points, and after that the serve rotates after every two further points. The players change ends after every six points, even if a player is between his two service points, and at the end of the tie break. A tiebreak is played in all sets.

Robert Dunbar (1931 – 2024)
Bob was born and raised in Kalamazoo. He was an avid athlete, attended State High, and earned 16 varsity letters in football, basketball, baseball, and tennis. He won the Michigan high school tennis state championship in doubles and played in the Nationals at Stowe Stadium around 1947.
Bob and Louise
Bob was proud of his Kalamazoo heritage. He followed his father’s footsteps, serving the City of Kalamazoo as Vice Mayor. He was cochair of Kalamazoo 2000, president of Kiwanis Club, and served on many civic organizations.
In 2017 at the 75th Anniversary of the Nationals in Kalamazoo, Bob Dunbar was pleased to announce to the Stowe Stadium audience that he had attended every Junior Nationals tournament for those 75 years.
In 1999, Bob was recipient of the Kalamazoo National’s Community Service Award.
Bob Dunbar remarking on the trains passing the original courts: “The… bonus offered by the coal burning giants was a blanket of black soot, coal dust, that would descend on the courts, aided by the prevailing winds which always seemed to target those courts.”
