THIS WEEK: After sweeping No. 30 Gonzaga over the weekend, San Francisco lost a midweek tilt to UC Davis, 5-2. San Francisco will now welcome WCC newcomer BYU for a three-game set starting on Thursday, April 26, at 3:00 p.m. The Cougars joined the WCC this season and are 17-15 overall with an impressive 6-3 WCC mark. The Cougars lost to No. 9 Stanford on Tuesday, 10-9. The two teams will conclude the series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m after playing Game Two on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Benedetti Diamond. WEEK THAT WAS: The Dons went 3-1 last week from April 17-22, sweeping WCC rival No. 30 Gonzaga. After dropping a non-conference game against Nevada, USF got hot at the right time, sweeping Gonzaga in a three-game set - 4-3, 2-1, and 7-4 - over the weekend. In the series, USF received dominant starting pitching from Kyle Zimmer on Friday and Alex Balog on Saturday. Dons’ closer Elliott Waterman registered three consecutive saves, without allowing a single run in 2.1 innings pitched, earning WCC Rawlings Pitcher of the Week honors for his performance. LOOKING AHEAD: After playing BYU, USF will hit the road to play Sacramento State on May 1, before traveling to Pepperdine for a three-game WCC set starting on May 4 at 3:00 p.m. LIVE VIDEO/AUDIO/STATS: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/usf.portal#

SCOUTING THE AGGIES: UC Davis lost two of three games over the weekend against fellow Big West member UC Riverside. The Aggies are hitting .263 on the season with an ERA of nearly four, at 3.97. The Aggies have struggled in the field defensively as well, fielding just .963 as a team. LAST TIME VS. UC DAVIS: USF took two-of-three games from UC Davis from February 26-27. The Dons took both games of the series finale doubleheader - 6-2 and 8-4 - over the Aggies. In the 8-4 win, Stephen Yarrow went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and shortstop Adam Clear went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Alex Balog picked up the win in relief of Matthew Hiserman. LAST THREE SEASONS: USF has dominated UC Davis over the past three seasons, holding an impressive 5-1 advantage over the past three seasons. In 2009, USF won both games against the Aggies - 7-1 and 6-0. In 2010, USF hammered UC Davis in the only game the two teams played - 18-5. In that game, Matt Chavez and Travis Higgs each collected four RBIs, while Elliott Waterman earned the win with

SCOUTING THE COUGARS: The Cougars are 5-4 since facing Loyola Marymount on April 5. Yesterday BYU lost to No. 9 Stanford in a close fought game, 10-9. In yesterday’s game, both Marc Oslund and Desmond Poulson (scheduled to pitch Friday and Saturday, respectively) pitched. Against LMU, BYU took two out of three against the Lions. More recently, BYU took three of four from Seattle, losing the series finale 5-2. BYU has also taken series against Portland and Saint Mary’s already in the season, winning two of three against both teams. LAST TIME VS. BYU: USF won a laugher, 20-4 on March 31, 2010 in the last meeting between the two teams. Derek Poppert tallied four RBIs in that game, while Nik Balog and Robert Abel both drove in three runs apiece. Doug Murray earned the win, tossing 4.0 innings, while striking out three and walking none. LAST THREE SEASONS: The two schools have faced off just once over the past three seasons, with USF winning in convincing fashion, 20-4.

2012 USF baseball

CAPTAIN AMERICA: Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer was named a second team All-American in Baseball America’s college preseason poll. The right-hander became the first Don to be named a preseason All-American since Tagg Bozied in 2000. Zimmer had a terrific March, tossing back-to-back compete game shutouts against Hawaii and UCSB. Against the Rainbows, Zimmer stuck out 11 and allowed only three hits en route to his first win of the 2012 season. On March 24, Zimmer blanked the Gauchos, striking out nine and walking only one to propel the Dons to a 2-0 victory. Zimmer owns a 4-3 record with a 2.86 ERA. In his last outing against No. 30 Gonzaga, Zimmer went 8.0 strong innings, striking out 10 and walking only one en route to his fourth victory of the season. The right-hander now owns a remarkable 75-to-11 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Zimmer’s 75 strikeouts, three complete games, and two shutouts rank first in the entire West Coast Conference. Zimmer’s 69.1 innings pitched ranks fifth in the WCC, while his 2.86 ERA ranks 10th. H20 BOY: Junior reliever Elliott Waterman earned WCC Rawlings Pitcher of the Week honors for his 3 save weekend against Gonzaga. Waterman has been stellar for the Dons in 2012, posting six saves, just one shy of the all-time single season record of seven owned by Patrick McGuigan. The 6-5, 230-pound lefty is 3-0 with a team-high six saves. “Proffesor Wat” as he’s reffered to by teammates owns a gaudy 1.24 ERA and a nearperfect 30-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 29.0 innings pitched. Waterman’s 20 appearances rank first on the team and are tied for third in the WCC. JUSTIN’S TIME: College of San Mateo transfer Justin Maffei has been the Dons hottest hitter in 2012. The center fielder ranks first on the team in hits (48), runs (35), home runs (3), total bases (65), slugging pct. (.436), on-base pct. (.463), hit by pitch (12), and steals (17). Maffei also ranks first in the WCC in stolen bases having swiped 17 in 21 chances. In addition, Maffei ranks 3rd in runs scored (35), 2nd in on-base percentage (.463), 2nd in bases on balls (28), 9th in hits (48), and 10th in total bases (65). SEEING CLEARLY: Adam Clear’s second 10-game hitting streak this season came to an end with an 0-for-3 day at the plate on Tuesday against UC Davis. Prior to Tuesday, Clear was 16-for-41 (.390) since April 7th against Portland. Clear’s previous 10-game streak was snapped after an 0-for-3 day on March 15 in the series opener against Hawaii. During the most recent streak, Clear had four multi-hit games, including two three-hit efforts, and raised his batting average .24 points from .293 to his current .317 mark. BALOG’S BULLETS: Sophomore right-hander Alex Balog has been remarkable in his second season in Green & Gold. The 2011 WCC All-Freshman honoree has allowed just 18 earned runs in 56.0 innings pitched (2.89 ERA), while striking out 43. Against No. 30 Gonzaga last Saturday, Balog came within two outs of throwing a complete game shutout. Although the sophomore is only 2-3 on the season, he has been nearly impossible to hit amassing a remarkable .210 batting average against.

ARMS RACE: The Dons’ team ERA of 3.40 (145er, 383.2ip) ranks 5th in the WCC. The Dons’ 337 strikeouts rank first in the Conference as does their 337-to-122 strikeout-to-walk ratio. USF has four pitchers with an ERA lower than 2.00 and eight under 3.00. In fact, the Dons’ Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starters each have ERAs below 3.00. Opponents are hitting just .245 against San Francisco this year. AMAZING ABE: Redshirt sophomore Abe Bobb (4-4, 2.85 ERA) has been excellent as the Dons’ Saturday/Sunday starter. On April 1, Bobb shutout the No. 24 San Diego Toreros across 7.1 innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked none en route to his fourth victory and WCC Pitcher of the Week honors. Bobb’s four wins rank first on the team. The Denver, Colorado native has gone at least five innings in eight of his 10 starts and has lasted at least six innings in five of his starts. Bobb has shown impressive control of all of his pitches racking up a 43-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio. FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Four-year senior Mason Morioka entered the 2012 season without a collegiate home run to his name. That changed on Opening Day, as Morioka took a 2-1 pitch from San Jose State reliever Kyle Hassna deep over the left field fence in the top of the ninth, to lengethen the Dons lead to 4-0. Morioka has started in 41 of the Dons’ 44 games this season all behind the plate and is San Francisco’s sixth-leading hitter with a .254 batting average. Morioka also ranks second on the team with 26 bases on balls and third with an .378 on-base percentage. NIK’S NUMBERS: Senior Nik Balog’s 28 RBIs lead the team this season and rank sixth in the entire WCC. The first baseman has 11 extra base hits this season, second on the team. The elder Balog heated up lately, tallying 11 RBIs in the last eight games, including a season-high five against LMU on April 14. Defensively, Balog has been nearly perfect at first base, amassing a pristine .997 fielding percentage (319 put outs and 22 assists against just one error). The Saratoga, Calif. native entered the 2012 season ranked second all-time in put outs at USF. Balog cemented his place in Dons history by recording 502 put outs - most all-time in a single season. UP THE MIDDLE: The Dons return both of their starting middle infielders from a year ago in shortstop Aritz Garcia and second baseman Jason Mahood. Mahood came alive in the three-game series against LMU, racking up seven RBIs and going 5-for-13 (.385). “Hoody” has raised his batting average .46 points since the start of April and is now hitting .257 on the season. Mahood’s nine doubles and 21 RBIs rank first and second on the team, respectively. The second baseman’s defense has been stellar once again, as the junior owns a .994 fielding percentage. HINKLE’S HELP: Junior reliever Haden Hinkle has been one of the most dominant right-handed arms out of the bullpen for USF this year. Hinkle threw 3.1 hitless innings against Fresno State in San Francisco’s 6-1 win on March 11. Hinkle’s .157 batting average against rank first on the entire staff. The righty from Madera, CA has allowed only 18 hits in 31.1 innings pitched this year.

CECILIO’S COME UP: Freshman Christian Cecilio notched his first collegiate victory in his second career start at USF, which came against Missouri on February 26 and helped complete the three-game series sweep of the Tigers. The left-hander was great against Fresno State on March 11, allowing one unearned run in 5.2 innings pitched. The San Jose, CA native has started 11 games on the season, which is the most of any Dons’ pitcher. Cecilio owns an impressive 27-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

2012 Team Game Highs

(Most recent occurance listed if multiple times)

CHAVEZ CRUSHES: Senior DH/C Matt Chavez leads the team with four long flys on the season. The designated hitter ranks second on the squad with a .413 slugging percentage and has 13 RBIs in just 80 at-bats. In fact, eight of Chavez’s 17 hits this season have gone for extra bases. Chavez has also caught behind the plate this season, a transition the senior worked on diligently throughout the offseason.

LOVELY DAY: Senior right-hander Cameron Love has been one of the first arms out of the bullpen for Coach Giarratano in 2012. Love’s stingy 1.59 ERA ranks fourth on the team. Unfortunately for the Dons, Love suffered season-ending surgey on his foot after fielding a ground ball against LMU on April 14.

THE GOLDEN GOOSE: Freshman reliever Logan West has 10 strikeouts in just 8.1 innings pitched. In fact, West nearly struckout four Bulldogs in one inning against Fresno State on March 10. On March 21, West registered his first collegiate victory with three innings of one-run ball in relief.

ZIMMER BROS.: Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer is joined this year by his younger brother, Bradley, who has started in 34 of the Dons’ 44 games this year. Both Zimmers played their high school ball at La Jolla High School in San Diego, California. The promising young right fielder leads all freshman in starts, at-bats, doubles, triples, RBI, and extra base hits.

SWEEPING UP: The Dons put together a 16-5 WCC record and won the conference last year due in large part to four separate three-game series sweeps of their WCC rivals, including Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, and Portland. So far this season, USF has swept two three-game series (vs. Missouri and vs. No. 30 Gonzaga).

REMASTERED: Senior lefty Jordan Remer entered the Dons record books last year, when he recorded four saves, tied for fifth all-time in the Dons’ single season books. Opposing hitters couldn’t touch the southpaw as he accumulated a .174 batting average against in 49.0 innings pitched. Remer has pitched well this season despite his 6.84 ERA as he owns a remarkable .159 batting average against in addition to 32 strikeouts in just 25.0 innings pitched. Remer came up clutch in Sunday’s series finale against Gonzaga, stranding runners on second and third with just one out in the eighth inning. FINE FRESHMAN: Freshman DH Brendan Hendriks has performed well for the Dons in his first go around, hitting .312 (29-for-93) with an impressive .359 on-base percentage. The Canadian has started in 24 games this season primarily as the designated hitter against right-handed pitchers.

giarratano makes history Head Coach Nino Giarratano surpassed Legend of The Hilltop, Dante Benedetti, with 374 coaching victories in WCC history with a 6-5 win over Northridge on March 2, 2012. Giarratano is now USF’s All-Time leader in coaching victories and now owns sole possesion of sixth place on the All-Time WCC list.
