THIS WEEK: The Dons’ final three games of the 2012 season come against WCC rival Saint Mary’s. Game one of the three game set starts at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 25, at the brand new Louis Guisto Field. The Gaels are 23-26 and 7-14 in WCC play. WEEK THAT WAS: The Dons went 0-1 last week, falling in a midweek tilt against No. 12-ranked Stanford, 6-3. The Dons led for the majority of the game and entered with a 3-2 lead in the eighth, but the Cardinal came alive with four runs in the frame to take a 6-3 come-from-behind win from the grasp of USF. USF, San Diego, and Saint Mary’s were the only three teams in the WCC that did not play in conference last week. WCC RACE: San Diego and Pepperdine currently sit atop the WCC with 14-7 records. The Dons (12-9) are in a three way tie for third place with Gonzaga and Loyola Marymount, but hold tiebreakers against both teams. 2012 MLB DRAFT: The 2012 MLB Draft is scheduled from June 4-6. The first round of the draft is set for 4:00 p.m. EST on MLB Network, while rounds 2-15 are scheduled for June 5 and rounds 16-40 take place on June 6. GOLDEN SPIKES WATCH LIST: Junior RHP Kyle Zimmer was named to the 60Man Midseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List last week. The La Jolla, Calif., native leads the WCC in shutouts (2), strikeouts (96), and strikeouts per nine innings (10.37) and ranks eighth in ERA (2.59). FINE FRESHMAN: Freshman DH Brendan Hendriks has performed well for the Dons in his first go around, hitting .307 (2nd on the team) with an impressive .362 on-base percentage. The Canadian has started in 28 games this season primarily as the designated hitter against right-handed pitchers, but has also played third base, first base, and left field as well. SWEEPING UP: The Dons put together a 16-5 WCC record and won the conference last year due in large part to four separate three-game series sweeps of their WCC rivals, including Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, and Portland. So far this season, USF has swept three three-game series (vs. Missouri, then-No. 30 Gonzaga, and Santa Clara).

giarratano makes history Head Coach Nino Giarratano surpassed Legend of The Hilltop, Dante Benedetti, with 374 coaching victories in WCC history with a 6-5 win over Northridge on March 2, 2012. Giarratano is now USF’s All-Time leader in coaching victories and now owns sole possesion of sixth place on the All-Time WCC list.

2012 USF baseball

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Four-year senior Mason Morioka entered the 2012 season without a collegiate home run to his name. That changed on Opening Day, as Morioka took a 2-1 pitch from San Jose State reliever Kyle Hassna deep over the left field fence in the top of the ninth, to lengethen the Dons lead to 4-0. Morioka has started in 48 of the Dons’ 52 games this season all behind the plate and is San Francisco’s fifth-leading hitter with a .264 batting average. Morioka also ranks second on the team with 27 bases on balls and third with a .374 on-base percentage. CECILIO’S COME UP: Freshman Christian Cecilio notched his first collegiate victory in his second career start at USF, which came against Missouri on February 26 and helped complete the three-game series sweep of the Tigers. The left-hander was great against Fresno State on March 11, allowing one unearned run in 5.2 innings pitched. On April 10 against then-No. 30 Oregon, Cecilio struck out a season-high six, while walking only one across 4.1 innings. The San Jose, CA native has started 13 games, which is tied for the team lead. REMASTERED: Senior lefty Jordan Remer has pitched well this season, owning a remarkable .150 batting average against (1st on the team) in addition to 38 strikeouts in just 29.1 innings pitched. Remer earned the start against No. 12-ranked Stanford last Tuesday and pitched 2.0 innings, allowing just one unearned run in the first, working out of a bases loaded jam. Remer has fanned three-or-more batters in seven of his 24 appearances. WESTWARD BOUND: Freshman righty Logan West has dazzled out of the bullpen for San Francisco. The De La Salle High School graduate totes a 1.64 ERA in 11.0 innings pitched, including a tremendous 14-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio. PULLING FOR PULIDO: Right-handed reliever Andrew Pulido has come on strong in the second half of the season, lowering his ERA nearly three full points to 4.38 in his last five appearances. On May 15 against then-No.12 Stanford, the Torrance, Calif., native pitched a season-high 3.1 innings, allowing just one run while striking out a season-high six.
