Quality Takes Notable Stride In Survey By Ted Craig
Rush - Dated Material
New-car quality saw a significant increase this year thanks to a more stable manufacturing environment. The J.D. Power Initial Quality Study showed the industry average improved by 5 fewer problems per 100 vehicles to 102. “The industry is producing better vehicles than it ever has before,” said Dave Sargent, J.D. Power’s vice president of global automotive, speaking at the Automotive Press Association. Last year, Sargent lamented that quality seemed to have reached a plateau. The big jump this year came in part because the manufacturers invested more in their vehicles following several years of needing every penny just to keep the doors open. Fewer model introductions helped as well, Sargent said. And the launches that
were made proved much more successful, such as the new Honda Civic and Toyota Yaris. The level of traditional quality, such as mechanical problems, is actually even higher than the score represents. Issues with technology continue to hold back several manufacturers, notably Ford Motor Co. Ongoing problems with the Ford MyTouch system caused the company’s IQS score to worsen again. Sargent said Ford addressed many of the issues with a series of fixes, but these came halfway through the survey period. “It’s a whole lot better than the previous system,” Sargent said. “They’ve turned the corner on technology.” This is the first year Fiat had enough vehicles for eligibility in the survey. The Italian automaker got off to a poor start, tying with Smart for lowest initial quality. Fiat had a poor reputation for mechanical reliability when it last entered the U.S. market. This time around, Sargent said, the cars run fine, but the consumers complain about the interior design. A big change is coming to the survey. This is the last one J.D. Power will mail out to consumers as the entire process moves online.
QUALITY RIDE: The Cadillac Escalade was named the highest quality SUV by respondents to this year’s J.D. Power Initial Quality Study. The Porsche 911 was named the highest quality vehicle overall.
