Industry Vets Honored at NAAA Event By Jeffrey Bellant
CHICAGO – Executives from a manufacturer and a value guide publisher, along with an auction owner, received the National Auto Auction Association’s most prestigious honors during the group’s recent annual convention. General Motors’s Dan Kennedy and Black Book’s Tim West won the NAAA’s coveted Hall of Fame award, while Columbus Fair Auto Auction owner Alexis Jacobs earned the NAAA’s Pioneer Award. ADESA CEO Jim Hallett presented Kennedy with the Hall of Fame award. “I believe it would be safe to say that we’re long overdue in recognizing this year’s recipient,” he said. Kennedy has played a key role in GM’s remarketing department for the better part of 25 years. “As a result, his name has become synonymous with our industry,” Hallett said.

He joked that Kennedy has probably been responsible for training more bosses than anyone in the remarketing industry. “(Kennedy) has cars in his DNA,” Hallett said. GM has remarketed 14 million vehicles during Kennedy’s tenure., he said. Kennedy was gracious at the podium. “Wow,” he said. “I’m very honored to be standing in front of you to accept this award.” He credited the support of his family and GM team members. “It’s a great industry, I enjoy it,” Kennedy said. “I love my job, which makes it easy to do. I thank you all.” NAAA Chairman Dave Angelicchio presented West with his award. West, who serves as Black Book vice president, North American auction director, has been with the company since 1984. West’s efforts have made him well respected as a trusted friend and advisor to auction general managers across the country, Angelicchio said. Angelicchio said people who know West point to his knowledge and experience, along with his efforts as an advocate for the industry, as a reason for making him a Hall of Fame winner. “This inductee embodies what it means to be a NAAA stalwart,” he said. Angelicchio also joked that outside of West’s accomplishments, he should be in

the Hall of Fame because of two simple words – jumbo shrimp – Black Book’s featured menu item at the popular NAAA reception it sponsors annually. West thanked the selectors for the honor along with several members of Black Book and the company’s president Tom Cross. “These people not only believed in me,” West said, “but they believed in this association. “That bond has been tremendous. It will continue to be that way.” He also thanked his family and friends.
Keith Whann, CEO of Columbus Fair Auto Auction, presented Jacobs with the NAAA’s 2011 Pioneer Award. Whann praised Jacobs for doing things the right way and leading by example. She has been generous with donations to state dealer associations and charity drives. Jacobs has served in various capacities over the years, including NAAA president. Whann highlighted Jacobs’ commitment by pointing out she has attended 45 of the last 46 NAAA conventions. “When you think about a pioneer,” Whann said, “you
think about someone who has been a leader, someone who has been groundbreaking, someone who has been of service to the association and their community.” “Tonight’s recipient has done all of that.” Jacobs accepted the award by saying she doesn’t like public speaking, but still briefly offered her thanks to the association. “I jut want to say that I’m very honored,” Jacobs said, “and I’m very pleased to have been a part of this association for all these years. “I love you all. This is a great industry.”
