Stay Connected via Social Media USD Graduate and Law Student Commons @USDGradLawLife

Greetings to all Graduate and Law Students! Picture this. You are entering graduate or law school. You have a great sense of who you are and the direction of your life is headed. You are certain in your plan and have a dream job in arm’s reach. Everything seems to be falling into place with a little faith, love and hard work. You are eager and ready to begin the new school year. You have your class schedule and books in hand. You know the one or two buildings where your classes are and, of course, the places to get coffee and food. However, you step foot on this beauteous campus, and even with all your confidence and purpose you wonder, “Where, outside of the classroom, do I belong?” The Graduate and Law Commons is your home away from home. On the 4th floor in the Student Life Pavilion, referred to as SLP, is a room to call your own. Room 401 is a space created just for graduate and law students. The Commons is the place to relax, hangout or study before and after class. Don’t be afraid to help yourself to complimentary coffee, tea and water, hook up to wireless, turn on the TV or use the microwave and refrigerator. The Commons is a great meeting space for groups and is available for reservation by graduate and law student organizations. The Commons is always hosting programs and activities including: Theology on Tap, Bagel Breakfasts, Wellness and Fitness programs, Holiday Celebrations, San Diego Outdoor Adventure excursions, Athletic Events and m any more. ***** I just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. My name is Karen Friedlander and I am a second-‐year graduate student in the Higher Education Leadership program through SOLES (School of Leadership and Education Sciences). I am also serving as the graduate assistant for Graduate Student Life. I work from my desk, located in The Commons and I welcome all of you to join me in making this space our home. Please don’t hesitate to come and introduce yourself and share any ideas, hopes and dreams you have for any events on how to use our space and build a strong graduate and law student community

The Changemaker Hub was launched Fall 2011 as a campus-wide manifestation of the University of San Diego’s commitment to its mission and values, and to promote entrepreneurship, collaboration, and innovation for positive social change by linking occurring initiatives at USD, as well as developing new ones.

What It Is: • An inclusive hub that connects people and initiatives for social change • A collaboration mechanism for developing and supporting initiatives • An enabler of innovation and creativity

What It’s Not: • A center or an institute focusing on a specific area of social change • An endeavor that supplants existing ones • Another silo in a system

The Changemaker Hub includes all USD educators, students, staff, and community members. It operates in partnership with Ashoka U and all of the Changemaker campuses in the United States and Mexico. What is the Changemaker FEST? The Changemaker FEST is a week dedicated to exploring, defining and putting social change into action. The USD community comes together on the week of September 30-October 4, 2014 to become energized by an environment that encourages everyone to be a Changemaker. Together, we celebrate USD’s third-year being designated as an Ashoka U Changemaker Campus by taking time to learn about many opportunities and best practices for engaging in social transformation around the world. This is a USD community driven celebration in which students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and community leaders have the chance to share how they are practitioners of changemaking on a daily basis, starting with how we grow as individuals to how we go beyond ourselves to be active agents in shaping local, national and global communities.

Mark your calendars…

An exclusive graduate student event,

“You and the Changemaker Hub” Thursday, September 18th 4:30 p.m. in the Graduate and Law Commons, SLP 401

During the training, participants will: explore anti-Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender bias in their lives; establish qualities of an effective ally and set boundries for ally work; learn language for discussing LGBT issues and clarify terms & concepts regarding gender and sexuality; learn strategies for intervening in anti-LGBT bias; and learn how to be a supportive ally when someone comes out to them. Please visit our website to view the current training schedule and sign up. www.sandiego.edu/safespaceallies

Safe Space Allies Training – 9/17; 10:30am-1:00pm

“Embracing Identities. Empowering Communities.” The UFMC offers many programs throughout the year that enhance the student experience. We encourage you to take special advantage of the four programs highlighted below. Attend a Language Matters workshop to raise awareness about the importance of using inclusive language. The workshop examines the power of words and explores different ways to communicate the same message while honoring and respecting our identities and diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We educate students about the language we use, its impact, and how to choose alternatives that best articulate our thoughts. We challenge everyone to “think before you speak” and to be a catalyst for change.

#WhatsTrendingUSD !

What do you get when you mix Buzzfeed, celeb tweets and Fox5 San Diego News? #WhatsTrendingUSD is a dialogue series that brings students, faculty, and staff together to discuss hot topic current events, sociopolitical issues, and pop culture that are trending in the news and social media. Discussions may range from the effects of FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil to the impact of the “D” requirement at USD. Don’t miss out USD! Rock your soapbox (and fill your lunchbox as food will be provided) on the 3rd Thursday of every month from 12:30-1:30pm at SLP 418. Request a Rainbow Educator presentation! We have a list of set workshop topics for you to choose from or you can "build your own" workshop. Please visit www.sandiego.edu/re for presentation options and complete the online request. Presentation content is aligned with the program's purpose to build awareness, educate, and engage the USD community around identities such as sexual orientation, gender, race, ethnicity, and class, while promoting the inclusion and visibility of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered communities.

Greater Than Yourself Retreat

The annual GTY Retreat is a free, two-day program bringing together a diverse set of students to explore !! personal awareness and identity, learn leadership concepts and strategies, and build campus relationships and alliances. Students develop their knowledge of self and others, enhance their awareness of intergroup dynamics, and expand their “toolkits" of campus resources and involvement opportunities. This year’s retreat is Sept. 26-28 in Pine Valley.

2014 Switgall Lecture "How Does God Dwell in Our Love of Each Other" Timothy Radcliffe, OP Monday, September 29, 7pm, Shiley Theater General Admission: $10 Students, Faculty/Staff free with USD ID To register online: http://sandiego.kintera.org/ccs Timothy Radcliffe, a Roman Catholic priest and member of the Dominican order is an itinerant preacher and lecturer based at Blackfriars, Oxford. He was former master of the worldwide Dominican order and professor at Oxford University and has also been active in the peace movement, ministry to people with AIDS, and advocacy for human rights. He spends most of his year giving retreats, lectures and conference keynote addresses in the UK and overseas. All over the world, he is well known for his approachable language, depth of thinking, and great sense of humor. His writings and lectures stretch minds and warm hearts as he offers guidance and encouragement along the journey of orienting one’s life toward God. He is a gifted presenter and his words have inspired people in hundreds of countries. Through the lens of the Catholic faith, Fr. Radcliffe explains how Christianity is an invitation to a particular freedom and happiness - the happiness that is God being God. All Christians claim that God is love. We know that our love of each other is human, but we can undervalue how it is also a sharing in the life of God. Along with Pope Francis, Fr. Radcliffe resists the culture of individualism and assures us that by stretching ourselves open to love others, we share in the life and love that is God. He will offer practical insight and wisdom into becoming more alive by discovering how to love well.

“The challenge [of Christianity] is to touch our imagination with the great adventure of becoming alive in God.” - Timothy Radcliffe, OP
