On behalf of the Graduate Student Council, I would like to welcome everyone back to campus and officially wish you a very happy New Year and a wonderful start to the Spring 2015 semester. Spring is a very exciting time as folks begin taking the bar exam, applying for summer internships, conducting research, job searching, and preparing for what is sure to be a joyous celebration during the 2015 commencement ceremonies. To my fellow last semester grad and law students, "Congratulations!" We are almost done! The USD community has been a wonderful home to me over the last three semesters, and it is my goal to ensure each of you has the opportunity to feel connected and cared for by your fellow grads. The GSC, clubs, and school associations throughout campus have many exciting events planned for the semester. I hope to see you at our first GSC Welcome Back at O'Toole’s on Tuesday, February 3, from 6-8 p.m. The first hundred folks will get a free drink. This event is co-sponsored by SGSA. Best Wishes, Jesse Rapport Chair, Graduate Student Council

What Do You SIT For?

"There are TWO opportunities EVERY Monday for guided meditation practice, either from 3 to 3:50 pm in SOLES 135 OR from 5 to 5:50 pm in SOLES 211." For more information email Kate Vosti at kvosti@sandiego.edu or join the Facebook group.

I SIT: I am a Student Inspiring Transformation. A new paradigm for a student-run mindfulness and meditation program. The I SIT campaign raises awareness about the benefits of mindfulness and meditation practice for college students. The heart of I SIT explores self-growth, fosters ongoing curiosity, and questions what it means to be “whole.” For thousands of years, Eastern traditions have practiced the art of meditation and holistic health as means of cultivating wisdom, compassion, and longevity. These practices are gradually being embraced by Western culture, both socially and scientifically. This group invites students to co-create a presence on USD’s campus that embodies a mindful shift in awareness. Practicing mindfulness with the support of one another will inspire the emergence of non-judgmental observation that supplements our internal wisdom.

Mindful Mondays gives students the opportunity to collaborate weekly meetings that provide mindfulness practice. The meetings serve students’ motivation to participate in a healthier lifestyle, both physically and mentally. Group discussions will integrate practical application of nutritional wellness with mindfulness techniques specifically for the college student. Activities will include mindful reflection and movement followed by sitting meditation. The meditations are guided with the intention to explore a specific theme such as self-compassion or gratitude. Professionals in the field will also be invited to host meditations.

Through service, we act as responsible stewards of parklands and act compassionately towards the greater San Diego community as conscious recreationists and citizens. Finally, we seek to build genuine relationships in a non-professional environment between constituents from all graduate and law programs at the University of San Diego. New Water Bottles All new and returning members will receive complimentary water bottles. They are sustainable, fun and a little retro. Simply show up for a hike to get yours.

Dating in Law School Valentine’s Day at the law school is a far cry from the ones we experienced in elementary school. While one person from our section handed out valentines to all of the girls in our section, that was really the closest it got, and that was extremely rare and surprising. When you first come to law school, many have high academic hopes and goals. Before arriving on your first day of orientation, many read books written to offer insight into the world of cases, legal memos, and the Socratic method. They offer useful advice about how to stay ahead of it all, what to do during a “cold call,” and how to react when you are humiliated in class. What these books fail to mention is the effect of this grueling experience on your dating life. Many come to law school already married or in committed relationships. Still others have boyfriends or girlfriends back home, who do not come with them to school, and hope that it will somehow workout, but it usually doesn’t. There is a phenomenon that occurs in law school that one can only describe as “pairing up.” While it is normal for people to date within the friend groups they spend time with, in law school it takes on a different nature. It is similar to pairing up for survival. The relationships with which students come into law school often dissipate within the first few months, as law school and other law students truly become their lives. It is as if you need a person who is sharing your experiences and whom completely understands what you are going through. The outside world just doesn’t cut it. What is slightly disturbing about dating in law school, however, is that it is oftentimes more political than romantic. This perhaps isn’t that unusual given that a lot of real world dating is political, but in law school it is almost as if a micro caste system occurs, where a person of one class rank cannot date someone of another. If you have an outstanding legal resume, it is highly unlikely you will be caught with someone who doesn’t. Romance becomes about impressing one another in academics and experience. While people are free to choose whoever makes them happy, it really should be about that, and less about what makes them feel more successful in their law careers. Happy relationships are successful, thus happiness should always be the goal. ~Corrie Hansen

“New year, new semester, and a new beginning offer us a great amount of revitalizing energy at the school of Leadership and Educational Sciences. Being back at SOLES after holiday, feels like being back to our second home where we study and practice a way of life. This was my view from SOLES balcony in my first day back… and I feel that it’s going to be a great start!” Azadeh Davari

"As I start my final semester at USD, I can't help but have bittersweet feelings about it all. Once I graduate, I am excited to start the next chapter of my life as a full-time professional in higher education, but it will also be very hard to leave SOLES, and the home and family I have found here at USD. Everyone here at USD, including faculty, staff, my peers and fellow students, have become my San Diego family. I would never have made it this far in graduate school if it weren't for the unwavering support, advice, and encouragement from them along this wild ride." Katie Russo, MA Student Higher Education Leadership

“During the intersession I went back home and had time to reflect on the lessons learned during my first semester. I continue to work as consultant and a professor in Costa Rica, and I have been able to integrate new concepts and ideas into my practice. I am happy to see SOLES knowledge already being transferred to Costa Rica, after one semester!

I am very

excited about my second semester classes, and about my participation in the Social Innovation Challenge 2015. Even though, it is always difficult to leave Costa Rica, I felt like I was coming back home; and that is a great feeling.” Cris Bravo, PhD Student in Leadership Studies “After some time away from school, I am definitely looking forward to being back at SOLES for my very last semester at the University of San Diego. I spent a great deal of time over the holidays reminiscing and reflecting on my six year journey at this institution, and I deeply believe that being in this program was exactly where I needed to be in this chapter of my life. This program has given me such a different perspective on life and has also provided me with an opportunity to discover myself. Above all, it has given me the tools to succeed as a leader in my professional career.” Negin Mani, MA student in Leadership Studies “As a student entering my fourth semester as a graduate student in SOLES I am in a position to reflect deeply and consciously on the years behind me and the years ahead. I have just three courses to complete before I walk away from this university, diploma in hand, ready to face the world. I have learned that the secret to doing SOLES well is very similar to the secret of being a great mom – love every minute because it will be over sooner than you think! Empowered with that awareness I enter this semester armed with the willingness to savor this experience, bask in the opportunity afforded me in the great halls of this university and to approach my learning with the enthusiasm of a child! The world lay ahead and I, for one, plan to steer the ship into a horizon of amazing possibility.” Desiree DelZio, MA student in Nonprofit Leadership and Management

Many of my fellow MBAs including me did an intersession aboard. I went to Buenos Aries, Argentina.

The other intersessions locations were Rio de Janeiro, Dominican Republic, Shanghai and Hong Kong. I had a blast in Argentina. Met many first years and evening MBAs for the first time. It was 25 days of non- stop doing something or the other. As exhausted I was by the end of it, I would not trade that experience for anything else in the world. I am sure all my other MBA friends who did intersessions aboard would agree with me. MBAs tend to get very secluded on campus, it is rare we meet other cohorts, intersessions are great ways to get out of your comfort zones and experience something radically different. Having said that, many of us graduate in May, we may or may not be in San Diego post-graduation. Here is a list of must dos: 1. Go to the beach more: We have been blessed by some of the best beaches and we should not let this opportunity go unattended. 2. Go to Sea World and Zoo: San Diego sea world and zoo are amazing, if you have not been there already or have been only once, you must do it. 3. Get back in shape to fit into dresses/suits for the graduation. 4. Learn something new or get back to a talent you left behind: Painting, drawing, dancing, singing or cooking. 5. Do the Tijuana service trip: It is an amazing experience, the university ministry puts this program together every semester. It is a one day trip, do not miss this opportunity. 6. Get a job. You see how getting a job is the last thing on the list. Well, in reality it’s a priority not just for me but also my fellow classmates. It is lower on the list because I feel like many of us have spent most of my time in the MBA worrying and stressing. Hence, this time to not to stress about it however, still prioritize and it is time for you to remember the small pleasures of life. Â

Horses in American Indian Culture Thursday, October 2, 2014 – Wednesday, May 20, 2015 Serra Hall David W. May American Indian Gallery, Room 214A Gallery hours: Tuesday -‐ Thursday, 1 -‐ 4 p.m. This student-‐produced exhibit traces the significance of the bonds that developed between Indians of the Southwest and the horse, their “four-‐legged brother.” The Spanish introduction of the horse into the area during the 1700s changed many aspects of Indian culture such as travel, warfare and hunting. Horses in American Indian Culture includes artifacts made of equine materials, items used in daily interactions with the horse, and objects demonstrating the horse’s profound role in warfare, spirituality, contemporary American Indian art, as well as other cultural phenomena. Sabato Rodia's Towers in Watts: Lecture by Luisa Del Giudice Wednesday, February 18, 2015 Mother Rosalie Hill Hall Warren Auditorium 7:00 pm -‐ 8:30 pm In this presentation Dr. Del Giudice will discuss her edited volume Sabato Rodia's Towers in Watts: Art, Migrations, Development (NY: Fordham University Press, 2014), a tour de force culmination of the last five years of activity around the extraordinary Watts Towers, a National Historic Monument, created over the course of 3 decades by a visionary artist, Italian immigrant laborer, Sam, Simon (born Sabato) Rodia, who wanted to "do something big." Through international conferences (Università di Genova, 2009; UCLA and Watts, 2010), and the Watts Towers Common Ground Initiative, scholars, artists, civic authorities, conservators, and others, explored the monument's multiple resonances within local and global migrations, contested social and urban spaces, and the relationship between art and economic development. These new voices, as well as Rodia's own words (transcribed from sound recordings at UCLA Research Library's Special Collections for the first time), return to the mysteries that remain around the man and his artwork: What are they? Why did he build them? Why is a new generation rallying around this icon? Sponsored by the Italian Program and the Department of Languages and Literatures and supported with an award from the ESFI Fund. Trelawny of the “Wells" Sunday, March 1, 2015 – Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. Sacred Heart Hall Studio Theatre By Arthur W. Thursday, February 19th -- #WhatsTrendingUSD

United Front Multicultural Center !

“Embracing Identities. Empowering Communities.” The UFMC offers many programs throughout the year that enhance the student experience. We encourage you to take special advantage of the four programs highlighted below. Attend a Language Matters workshop to raise awareness about the importance of using inclusive language. The workshop examines the power of words and explores different ways to communicate the same message while honoring and respecting our identities and diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We educate students about the language we use, its impact, and how to choose alternatives that best articulate our thoughts. We challenge everyone to “think before you speak” and to be a catalyst for change.

#WhatsTrendingUSD !

What do you get when you mix Buzzfeed, celeb tweets and Fox5 San Diego News? #WhatsTrendingUSD is a dialogue series that brings students, faculty, and staff together to discuss hot topic current events, sociopolitical issues, and pop culture that are trending in the news and social media. Discussions may range from the effects of FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil to the impact of the “D” requirement at USD. Don’t miss out USD! Rock your soapbox (and fill your lunchbox as food will be provided) on the 3rd Thursday of every month from 12:30-1:30pm at SLP 418. Request a Rainbow Educator presentation! We have a list of set workshop topics for you to choose from or you can "build your own" workshop. Please visit www.sandiego.edu/re for presentation options and complete the online request. Presentation content is aligned with the program's purpose to build awareness, educate, and engage the USD community around identities such as sexual orientation, gender, race, ethnicity, and class, while promoting the inclusion and visibility of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered communities.

Greater Than Yourself Retreat

The annual GTY Retreat is a free, two-day program bringing together a diverse set of students to explore !! personal awareness and identity, learn leadership concepts and strategies, and build campus relationships and alliances. Students develop their knowledge of self and others, enhance their awareness of intergroup dynamics, and expand their “toolkits" of campus resources and involvement opportunities. This year’s retreat is Sept. 26-28 in Pine Valley.
