What Do You SIT For? "There are TWO opportunities EVERY Monday for guided meditation practice, either from 3 to 3:50 pm in SOLES 135 OR from 5 to 5:50 pm in SOLES 211." For more information email Kate Vosti at kvosti@sandiego.edu or join the Facebook group. I SIT: I am a Student Inspiring Transformation. A new paradigm for a student-run mindfulness and meditation program. The I SIT campaign raises awareness about the benefits of mindfulness and meditation practice for college students. The heart of I SIT explores self-growth, fosters ongoing curiosity, and questions what it means to be “whole.” For thousands of years, Eastern traditions have practiced the art of meditation and holistic health as means of cultivating wisdom, compassion, and longevity. These practices are gradually being embraced by Western culture, both socially and scientifically. This group invites students to co-create a presence on USD’s campus that embodies a mindful shift in awareness. Practicing mindfulness with the support of one another will inspire the emergence of non-judgmental observation that supplements our internal wisdom. Mindful Mondays gives students the opportunity to collaborate weekly meetings that provide mindfulness practice. The meetings serve students’ motivation to participate in a healthier lifestyle, both physically and mentally. Group discussions will integrate practical application of nutritional wellness with mindfulness techniques specifically for the college student. Activities will include mindful reflection and movement followed by sitting meditation. The meditations are guided with the intention to explore a specific theme such as self-compassion or gratitude. Professionals in the field will also be invited to host meditations.

The MFA Dramatic Arts program has been busy thus far into the academic year. The rising actresses and actors have been tirelessly putting on theatrical performances and have been showcasing their remarkable talents. The Graduate Acting Program presented Shakespeare’s Pericles, Prince of Tyre from November 15th to the 23rd, 2014 at the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, Conrad Prebys Theatre Center at The Old Globe. Pericles is an epic of “the trials, heartbreak, and redemption of a warrior who must navigate the dangerous currents of human corruption and fate,” mentioned Program Coordinator, Shana Wride. The class of 2014 toured The Old Globe’s new producing platform, Globe for All in San Diego. This tour, which is free, is a professional production of Shakespeare that “will serve more communities throughout San Diego by collaborating with a diverse range of local organizations including military bases, recreation centers, libraries, centers for the elderly, homeless shelters, and correctional facilities,” said Wride.

The intention is to serve communities with multiple generations that have been neglected in the arts. The Old Globe Artistic Director, Barry Edelstein directed the first production, Shakespeare’s romance, All’s Well That Ends Well. Edelstein cast local professional actors, including recent graduates of USD’s program. The tour ran from October 28th until November 9th. In 2015, graduate students in the MFA Dramatic Arts program will also be taking an extensive tour throughout the theater culture of London! Next semester, graduate students will be putting on a production of, Trelawny of the 'Wells’, which is a comedy written by Arthur Wing Pinero during the Belle Époque in 1898. The play is about a theater actress who tries to abandon her career on the stage for love. She comes to discover, however, that she’s a misfit in a world off the stage. This production will run from February 28th to March 5th, 2015 at the Studio Theater on campus. ~Alley Jordan

In this time of Thanksgiving, I would like to share my gratitude with the students and faculty at the School of Peace Studies. I have learned and grown so much over the past 17 months and I am grateful for this time we have had together. I thank the faculty and my fellow "cohortians" for everything you have done to support me through this process. The program has given me the opportunity to reflect not only on the world in which we live, but also the tremendous amount of peacebuilding work we have ahead of us. It has given me a chance to reflect on myself and how I can be a better student, teacher, friend, colleague, sister, daughter, person in our world. Thank you. ~ Ali Wolters; December 2014 graduate

Towards the end of the fall semester in Warren Hall and the Law Library become cesspools of anxiety and stress. Students come, sit, study, sit, study, buy a sandwich from Tu Mercado and bring it back into the library, and towards 11 pm, go. For first years, it is even worse. The conjugate with fellow 1Ls; calculating and strategizing, analyzing and agonizing, they chart out the most efficient course to make it to the other side. Of course, the end of the semester is the most anxiety-inducing, stress-producing time of the year. It is very important in this stressful time to stay connected to what brought you peace throughout the semester. The entire course of law school is high-stress. It is demanding and unforgiving. It was the little things you did throughout the semester to unwind and take care of yourself that are crucial to your health and sanity during finals. Not only will you take comfort in continuing with these cultivated habits when you are surrounded by relentless studying and high competition, they will also serve you in that they will allow you to recharge and study efficiently, instead of miserably. If you went to the gym three times a week throughout the semester, continue to do so during finals. If you took weekly, hour-long bubble baths, do not skip these to study. If you slept eight hours a night, do not deprive your body of this vital sleep and solid sleep pattern. The pressure you place on yourself, competitiveness of others, and hanging out with other law students, will do nothing but detract from your confidence and focus. Instead, choose to take care of yourself and focus on yourself. Eat healthy, exercise, and sleep, while all the other law students are giving themselves hemorrhoids, give yourself stamina. ~ Corrie Hansen, 3L

At this time of the year that academic year and calendar year is coming to the end, it may be a good time to sit back and reflect on our personal and professional accomplishments. As we are trying to finish final assignments successfully and close this chapter, we are well aware that this is a new beginning to further horizons. SOLES faculty and students have been productively engaged in different events throughout the semester. Among those hosting International Leadership Association annual conference in San Diego this year was very significant. Recently Dean Cordeiro’s office published fall newsletter ‘Horizons’ for SOLES alumni and friends. It summarizes remarkable news, activities and achievements. View Fall 2014 Horizons.

Nikita Stange, second year master students in nonprofit leadership and management says: “When I think about what I have achieved so far I am blow away by the knowledge and wisdom I have gained in the last year and a half. I can hardly believe it’s been a year and a half! I feel thankful especially this time of year, for the support of some of the amazing faculty in SOLES as well as for the support of my fellow NPLM students. I am looking forward to putting the hardest semester yet behind me (PHEW!) but in all seriousness, I am looking forward to taking the winter intercession to begin work on my final project- my portfolio, where I get to share my best work with School of Education and Leadership Sciences, and put on display the hard work that together with my classmates I have done.” Maureen A. Guarcello, MA in Higher Education says:” I have amassed a number of skills and refined my expertise through my graduate education, but it is the strengthening of my spirit that I count as an extraordinary achievement and the one thing I am most grateful for during my time here at USD. As I approach commencement I look forward to feeling that the final push ignites within me. Feeling the pressure of quickening deadlines, overcoming the disappointment of making mistakes, and knowing the sweet spell of victory that waits patiently for me on the other side of my dissertation research.”

There are a few MBA students graduating this spring. Most people say that the first few months of the start of school are the hardest. It is not true for MBA. The 3rd semester is probably the hardest. Many students are juggling internships, jobs and school work, it takes a toll. You don’t meet your friends as often as you would have liked to, if you have taken up other commitments at school you are not able to keep them up and you are playing catch up with everything. But… All’s well that ends well. Kudos to all those who are graduating this spring. Congratulations!!!! You inspire everyone in the MBA program that the end is not so far and keep on keeping on. As the year comes to an end, 2014 GBSA (Graduate Business Students Association) also comes to an end. GBSA has had a many events, supported all the students clubs in the business school and introduced the professional development scholarship. Here’s the list of events GBSA put together for all graduate business students. •

Who are the Safe Space Allies? The Safe Space Allies Network was created by the United Front Multicultural Center. It serves to enhance the ability of students, staff, administrators, and faculty to demonstrate proactively and personally the University’s core value of community—regardless of sexual orientation or other identity. Grounded in Catholic Social Thought, the University’s mission affirms that all human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society.

Safe Space Ally Trainings We offer Safe Space Ally Trainings multiple times per semester. They are two-and-a-half-hour trainings facilitated by the Rainbow Educators. During the training, participants will: explore anti-Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender bias in their lives; establish qualities of an effective ally and set boundries for ally work; learn language for discussing LGBT issues and clarify terms & concepts regarding gender and sexuality; learn strategies for intervening in anti-LGBT bias; and learn how to be a supportive ally when someone comes out to them. Please visit our website to view the current training schedule and sign up. www.sandiego.edu/safespaceallies

“Embracing Identities. Empowering Communities.” The UFMC offers many programs throughout the year that enhance the student experience. We encourage you to take special advantage of the four programs highlighted below. Attend a Language Matters workshop to raise awareness about the importance of using inclusive language. The workshop examines the power of words and explores different ways to communicate the same message while honoring and respecting our identities and diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We educate students about the language we use, its impact, and how to choose alternatives that best articulate our thoughts. We challenge everyone to “think before you speak” and to be a catalyst for change.

#WhatsTrendingUSD !

What do you get when you mix Buzzfeed, celeb tweets and Fox5 San Diego News? #WhatsTrendingUSD is a dialogue series that brings students, faculty, and staff together to discuss hot topic current events, sociopolitical issues, and pop culture that are trending in the news and social media. Discussions may range from the effects of FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil to the impact of the “D” requirement at USD. Don’t miss out USD! Rock your soapbox (and fill your lunchbox as food will be provided) on the 3rd Thursday of every month from 12:30-1:30pm at SLP 418. Request a Rainbow Educator presentation! We have a list of set workshop topics for you to choose from or you can "build your own" workshop. Please visit www.sandiego.edu/re for presentation options and complete the online request. Presentation content is aligned with the program's purpose to build awareness, educate, and engage the USD community around identities such as sexual orientation, gender, race, ethnicity, and class, while promoting the inclusion and visibility of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered communities.

Greater Than Yourself Retreat

The annual GTY Retreat is a free, two-day program bringing together a diverse set of students to explore !! personal awareness and identity, learn leadership concepts and strategies, and build campus relationships and alliances. Students develop their knowledge of self and others, enhance their awareness of intergroup dynamics, and expand their “toolkits" of campus resources and involvement opportunities. This year’s retreat is Sept. 26-28 in Pine Valley.
