On display now and until the end of May, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Hoehn University Galleries are housing a collection of Rembrandt illustrations. The galleries have magnifying glasses for patrons to closely examine the Old Master’s precise, detailed drawings. The collection ranges from a significant self-portrait of the artist to scenes out of the New Testament. Viewers can closely examine Rembrandt’s many variations of the same scene as they move throughout the exhibition. ~Alley Jordan

USD School of Law’s 2015 McLennon Moot Court Competition Corrie Hansen Each year, the University of San Diego School of law hosts a m oot court competition, which is b asically a tournament in which law students who choose to participate are given a fictitious set of facts and legal issue(s) for which they must write and file a legal brief in support of their assigned position on the issue(s). Students are then given 15 minutes to argue their positions in front of a panel of judges, this year presided over by Judge H. Lee Sarokin, Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals, Third Circuit (ret.); Judge M. Margaret McKeown, Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit; and Judge Larry Alan Burns, District Judge, United States District Court, Southern District of California. Given that the students are arguing in front of well-‐known federal judges, this competition is very prestigious, and winning first place in one of the categories: Best Oralists, Best Petitioner Briefs, Best Respondent Briefs, and Finalists, is quite an honor. This year, first place overall went to Cody Wisniewski, Best Oralist went to Caitlin Macker, Best P etitioner Brief went to Dillon Jones, and best Respondent Brief went to Jenna Campbell. Congratulations to this year’s McLennon Moot Court first place winners!

Spring and new beginnings Every new season is a good reminder of renewal and new beginnings in the universe. It brings a fresh chance, new hope; it sheds new light on old problems. Being a graduate student at SOLES, we learn and practice to see the world from inside out with a reflective lens. The signs in the nature remind us to have gratitude for what we have and hope for what we want to change. In Leadership and mindfulness class, we celebrated an ancient Persian tradition, ‘Nowruz’ that means new day. The exact beginning of the Persian New Year occurs when the season changes from winter to spring on the vernal equinox, which usually happens on 20 or 21 March each year. This ancient tradition inspired us to practice gratitude and mindfulness for the new beginning and appreciate nature’s positive change around us. ~Azadeh Davari

Spring Cleaning: Neha Chinchanikar

The practice of thoroughly cleaning the house in springtime can be applied in many facets of our lives. Most business students will agree with me when I say that we feel like we are doing so many things and not concentrating on one thing: homework, team work, presentations, networking, applying for jobs. The spring is an ideal time to reevaluate your goals for the year. January has passed many of us have made resolutions but it’s time that we go back and check if we are doing things that align with our resolutions, like how we evaluate strategy. Being able to apply, the skills we learn at school in real life is an important exercise we all must engage in to be productive and efficient in our lives. This is a great time to not just do the symbolic gesture of cleaning the house/room but also to clean and recharge our minds. Just like how there are many products for cleaning the house, there are many ways to clean your mind too. You can attend spiritual courses, yoga classes and prayer sessions. However, sometimes those things are not practical due to our busy schedules and routines. Here are 2 must things do to if not anything else. 1. Breathe: We often are so stressed or clenched in the moment that we forget to Breathe. Deep breathing is a great break you can give your body from the tension. 2. Smile: We forget how important it is to smile not just for yourself but also for others. It’s a sign of reassurance to friends and family that you are fine. It’s a way to sending a signal back to your body that everything can be managed. So everyone, only two things to remember breathe and smile. Happy spring cleaning!

Horses in American Indian Culture Thursday, October 2, 2014 – Wednesday, May 20, 2015 Serra Hall David W. May American Indian Gallery, Room 214A Gallery hours: Tuesday - Thursday, 1 - 4 p.m. This student-produced exhibit traces the significance of the bonds that developed between Indians of the Southwest and the horse, their “four-legged brother.” The Spanish introduction of the horse into the area during the 1700s changed many aspects of Indian culture such as travel, warfare and hunting. Horses in American Indian Culture includes artifacts made of equine materials, items used in daily interactions with the horse, and objects demonstrating the horse’s profound role in warfare, spirituality, contemporary American Indian art, as well as other cultural phenomena. Rembrandt: A Decade of Brilliance Friday, March 20, 2015 – Friday, May 22, 2015 Founders Hall Robert and Karen Hoehn Family Galleries Monday – Friday, 12 – 5 p.m.; Thursday, 12 – 6 p.m. Rembrandt: A Decade of Brilliance (1648 – 1658) explores 10 years of the artist’s graphic output, years during which Rembrandt produced some of his best-known prints and his experimentation with graphic media was at its height. This exhibition will give viewers the opportunity to examine Rembrandt’s creative process, displaying different states — or versions — of the same prints side-by-side to demonstrate the ways the artist employed line and tone to dramatically different effect. Rembrandt: A Decade of Brilliance (1648 – 1658) will feature international loans from major museums and private collections. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see groundbreaking works assembled together here in San Diego! Selma, 1965: Bruce Davidson and the Photography of Civil Rights Friday, March 6, 2015 – Sunday, May 24, 2015 Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Fine Art Galleries Cost: Free Monday – Friday, 12–5 p.m.; Thursday, 12– 6 p.m. This exhibition brings together almost 50 vintage photographs that tell the story of the Selma marches that took place 50 years ago. Bruce Davidson traveled to Alabama as a young photojournalist to document the circumstances surrounding discriminatory voting

rights practiced against African Americans. Davidson’s powerful images, along with several other photographers works, record the efforts of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., and thousands of others as they led a non-violent protest from Selma to Montgomery in March of 1965. Many of these photos have become classic images of the Civil Rights Era in the United States.
