Message from Superintendent, Dr. Darrel Stufflebeam

Any veteran educator will tell you that each school year goes by a little faster than the previous one. This school year has been no exception in that regard but it has been remarkably successful! The 2017-2018 school year was the beginning of a new era for Lansing USD 469 for several reasons.

We have restructured how we screen students and identify those who are struggling. Consequently, how we intervene with those students to ensure they acquire and retain the skills necessary to be successful will change and improve. Our teachers and administrators have spent countless hours working on the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and other components of the state’s Kansas Education Systems Accreditation (KESA) process. Another primary focus this spring has been selecting new K-12 math resources to create a more comprehensive, district-wide math program. The work will, of course, continue but we are off to a fantastic start!

In other district news, we are making final preparations to move fourth and fifth grade students from the elementary building to Lansing Intermediate School (LIS), formerly the middle school.

Among other LIS projects, a new security entrance is nearly complete, and we will be installing a playground this summer. We are truly fortunate to have such fantastic facilities and room for growth!

For this coming school year, we will focus on implementing our new MTSS and additional KESA initiatives while planning other improvements. Those improvements will include prioritizing potential new positions (i.e. school safety personnel, counselors, and teachers) and maintaining our facilities. As always, we will be seeking input from parents and other community members.

As I enter my 32nd year in public education, serving in a community that strongly supports its schools and shares a vision of achieving excellence is gratifying. We are particularly grateful for our community partners who continually work with us side-by-side to improve services to Lansing families. Those partners include the Lansing Educational Foun dation, Lansing Elementary Parent-Teacher Association, City of Lansing and the countless volunteers who dedicate their time to support the students and teachers in this school district.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE USD #469 Technology Initiatives

Students in today’s technology infused world have information at their fingertips that used to be difficult and time consuming to obtain. Lansing School District continues to focus on helping students be critical consumers of information. Lansing School District has 1-1 technology in grades 3-12 and technology resources available for small group instruction in grades K-2. Students in grades 6-12 have the ability to take their iPad home nightly. The availability of technology and training for safe technology use have been the first steps in preparing our students for the information rich age that they will not only have to navigate, but also prosper in as productive members of our society.

We have implemented some new technologies in the classroom to help guide students on productive use of their time on the iPad. One is an app called Apple Classroom. Apple Classroom allows teachers to see the student’s screen when within Bluetooth range, which is approximately 30 feet, and the student accepts the invitation to view. The process of using the ever expanding digital technology for productivity and not just for entertainment is an important skill that students need to be taught in today’s connected global world.

As we move forward with technology use, our focus will move from using technology to consume information to a focus of using technology to produce For questions regarding our information. FACILITIES UPDATE LANSING INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL OPENING FALL 2018 509 IDA STREET The Lansing Board of Education voted and approved to move forward with the opening of Lansing Intermediate School (former middle school on Ida Street) this coming year for grades four and five. Lansing School District is finalizing plans and construction of the new security entrance, playground and other improvements. School hours for Lansing Intermediate will be 8:30AM - 3:30PM.

April is Autism Awareness Month Light it up Blue!

Gifted Education News Lansing Elementary School

Lansing Elementary School-1st through 3rd graders are working on their Primary Education Thinking Skills units that include convergent, divergent, visual and evaluative thinking. Several grade levels have been able to experience breakout activities, where students solve a series of puzzles in order to open numerous locks. One of the latest Breakout Activities was centered around the novel Anne of Green Gables. Students had the opportunity to work on a Kansas Strong project where the students were asked to build an oil derrick that would not only hold the greatest amount of weight, but would also be cost effective. They have also had to problem solve with various “Mystery Bags” and use only the given materials to complete the task. One of the latest tasks was to construct bird beaks which are best suited to gather food within various niches. The students needed to gather as much food as possible in the given time frame. The beaks needed to be used for tearing, cracking, picking and scooping. The Odyssey of the Mind high school gifted team will be hosting a workshop for the elementary gifted students in May. Team members apply creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. Working in teams, students learn cooperation and respect for the ideas of others, to evaluate ideas, and to learn that the process is as important as the final product.

Lansing Middle School

Student-led, independent projects during 1st quarter included learning to code, learning chemistry, playwriting, learning to 3-D print, understanding biodiesel fuel, and assembling computers. The second gifted classroom was turned into a Mindfulness Room using the generous donations provided by our gifted families. Teaching mindfulness has been proven to enhance brain performance, promote creative thinking, reduce stress and anxiety, increase compassion, and reduce the likelihood of depression. Students will write an essay about what mindfulness means to them. Sixth and seventh grade students participated in Future City this year. Although students did not place in the competition, they made a very positive impact on the judges. We hope to benefit from the inclusion of engineering mentors from our community next year. University of Kansas for KU-Expo 2017, students competed in 6th, 7th and 8th grade teams for Engineering Design of Popsicle Towers. Three of the towers surpassed all levels of testing, including withstanding 60 pounds of sand and a subsequent hydraulic press.

Students are currently engaged in a chess competition and will return to their respective independent activities near the end of the school year.

Lansing High School

LHS gifted took two bridge-building teams to compete in the UMKC Roobuilders Competition; they won 2nd place in the high school division and received the Judge’s Choice Award for bridge design. Several students participated in the 54th Model United Nations in February bringing home awards for “1st place Outstanding Delegate GA1”, “1st place Outstanding Delegate GA2”, “2nd place Outstanding Delegate Overall”, “Best Authorship Speech GA2”, and “3rd place Outstanding Delegation – India”. Students participated in the Stock Market Game last fall. Juniors and Seniors have been working with Karen Wolken for ACT prep. Odyssey of the Mind teams have been working on creative problem-solving activities and will host a workshop for gifted students at LES and LMS in May.

Elementary School Special Education Update Kindergarten, first, and second grade special education students are continuing to learn more sight words and phonics skills. We are using the Explode the Code series to learn phonics. Students are becoming more fluent on basic addition and subtraction facts, as well as learning how to do multi digit addition and subtraction problems.

Students are learning to write independently and to use the writing conventions accurately. Our students are looking forward to May. Mrs. Hannon’s class will have their Awards Ceremony May 10th.

First grade students will be going to Deanna Rose Farmstead May 11th. Kindergarten students will go to the Coterie Theatre May 16th. Second grade students will go to the Midland Theatre May 21st. Kindergarten field day is May 14th, first grade field day is May 15th, and the second grade field day is May 16th. In case of rain, the makeup field day is May 17th.

Middle School Spcial Education Update This semester the LMS Life Skills Class continued participation in vocational training at the Farmer’s House in Weston, MO by upping their visits to two times a month. Students work in the store and on the farm monthly where they cook, take inventory, garden, stock shelves, and practice cash register and money skills. Students also put on a monthly bake sale where they bake and sell items to the middle school students in the building during lunch.

High School & Transitions to Post-Secondary Life

The high school students have been hard at work on community projects and participation in social events this year. The Smoothie Shop continues in full-swing with added chips and salsa. An errand service for teachers at the high school and in the community was opened up this year along with supporting the recycling program at the high school. The students participated in two craft sales in the community and held a craft sale and luncheon at the high school along with making dog toys and animal blankets for the community kennel. The Puzzle Club assisted with the Elementary Sensorium back in the fall. The students have been baking up a storm with pie making for the special education staff at Thanksgiving, making assorted bakery goods for people in the community, and participating in the Valentine cookie sale of over 500 cookies. In February, the Special Olympics Teams took 1st and 2nd in the Bocce Ball Tournament in February to be followed by the high school taking 3rd place in small school division with 12 medals and 15 ribbons at Job Olympics. The high school students assisted with filling 1,700 dental kits for Lansing elementary and middle school students in February, in addition to filling 2,500 East Eggs for a community Easter Egg hunt. Recent outings include the Transition Fair at University of St. Mary’s funded by the AT&T Grant and a social outing with another Transition to Post-Secondary Life program. On April 28th there will be an Autism bowling fundraiser and T-Shirt sales.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education

Deaf and Hard of Hearing services are an integral part of our schools; we focus on ensuring that each of our students has full access to the curriculum. The activities focus on reading, vocabulary development, and American Sign Language. We have several students with emerging skills in American Sign Language, and ASL continues to be a part of the curriculum as we integrate it into the classroom.
