The School Community The Lansing Unified School District is comprised of five buildings: Lansing Elementary (K-5), Lansing Middle School (6-8), Lansing High School (9-12) and two Special Education facilities. The district employs a staff of 208 licensed staff, 220 classified staff, and 13 administrators. The estimated assessed valuation for the general fund is $109,809,068 with a general fund levy of 18.221 mills, and a bond and interest levy of 20 mills for 2014.

Mission Statement The Lansing School District’s mission is to provide all students with the opportunity to gain scholastic, technical, social, and life-long learning skills essential for academic, occupational, and personal success as a productive citizen.

District Facilities The district currently operates one elementary school, one middle school, one high school and a Special Education facility that houses the School of New Beginnings, Early Childhood, Tiny-K and Parents as Teachers (PAT) programs. The District Office houses a Diploma Recovery Program – LEAP, a Dropout Prevention Program and a Special Education Transition Program – LINCS. LANSING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The Lansing Elementary School is located at 450 West Mary Street and accommodates all K-5 students in the district. The 8-section building opened in August 2008. The building maximizes use of shared facilities, with a state of the art education environment,(library, computer lab, gym, office spaces, etc.). The eight kindergarten classrooms were specifically designed for accommodating full-day kindergarten.

LANSING MIDDLE SCHOOL The Lansing Middle School is located at 509 West Ida and accommodates students in grades six through eight. This building was opened in January of 1997 and serves as an example of blending modern architectural design with state-of-the art technology which is apparent in every room. Each grade has its own “house� which contains 11 classrooms and one computer lab. The 6th and 7th grades are divided into teams.

LANSING HIGH SCHOOL Lansing High School is located at 220 Lion Lane and accommodates grades nine through twelve. This building opened in August 1988. Students and parents who enter the school enjoy the unique and open two-story commons area. The high school includes a technology building that opened in 1995. In 2008, a 900 seat auditorium with stage and costume/prop storage and an instrumental music room for a 150 piece ensemble were constructed.

SPECIAL EDUCATION SCHOOL OF NEW BEGINNINGS / EARLY CHILDHOOD / TINY-K New Beginnings, Early Childhood, Tiny-K and Parents as Teachers (PAT) are located at 210 E. Mary. These programs provide comprehensive and skilled services to special needs students with learning disabilities, mental behavior disorders, physical & health impairments, visual handicaps, autism, speech and language disabilities, severe multiple handicaps and the gifted. These programs relocated to the old elementary building that was closed in 2008.

DISTRICT OFFICE LINCS / LEAP / PROMISE ACADEMY The district refurbished the old elementary school known as Sallie Zoll School at 200 E. Mary to serve as the District Office that houses the district office staff and the Board of Education meeting room and a small conference room. This facility also houses a diploma recovery program – LEAP, a dropout prevention program – Promise Academy and a special education transition program – LINCS.

In 2015 the Lansing School District will be opening the new Lansing High School which will include state of the art educational space, technology advancements, athletic fields and a swimming pool addition.

In 2015 the previous Lansing High School will be renovated into the new Lansing Middle School opening in 2016. The new facility will feature a secure controlled entrance. Two additions will be placed onto the building. The first addition will be a new media center/administrative offices and the second will include science classrooms.

BOARD OF EDUCATION 2014-2015

The district is governed by a seven-member Board of Education and are elected to four-year terms. All seven members of the Board are elected at-large. Elections are held biannually to alternately elect three Board members and four Board members. SCHOOL DISTRICT HISTORICAL REVIEW Lansing Rural High School began in 1902 and since then it has been moved to four different locations. It was first housed in a structure built in 1 877 at the corner of Main Street and Kansas Street. J.M. Gilman served as principal the first year and James B. Kelsey succeeded him as principal for the next four years. In 1902, the enrollment was 2 (one boy and one girl). During the term 1915-1916, the enrollment was 70 students. The building was destroyed by a fire in the early 1900’s.

A new high school building was erected in 1923 at 108 S. 2nd Street. The first class to graduate in this building had 11 seniors. This building served as the high school until 1963 when the last graduating class had 40 seniors.

Another new high school building was erected in 1963 at 300 E. Olive Street. The first class graduating from this location had 26 seniors. Shortly after that, unification came to Kansas. The Class of 1966 was the last to graduate from Lansing Rural High School. There were 55 seniors to graduate. After that, the school was known as Lansing High School #469, as it is today. The building on Olive Street served as the high school until the 198788 school year. The class of 1988 was comprised of 104 graduating seniors and was the last class to graduate from this building. The old high school has served the district as a middle school and intermediate school until it closed its doors in 2008.

The current high school was erected on Lion Lane and was opened for the 1988-89 school year. It was to hold 835 students and is still serving the community today as the high school. The first class graduating from this building had 125 seniors.

Lansing Rural High School District #2 filed a petition on December 19, 1964 for the establishment of a unified school district. The petition was approved by the State of Kansas Department of Public instruction on March 4, 1965 to be effective July, 1, 1966.

SIZE AND LOCATION Lansing is located in the northeastern corner of Kansas bordering the Missouri River Valley. The District is approximately 49 square miles and is bounded to the north by the City of Leavenworth and to the east by the Missouri River. The remainder of the school district is comprised of farmland and housing subdivisions in Leavenworth County. The District has an estimated population of over 11,300 residents.
