MESSAGE FROM DR. GILL WHITE
ASSOCIATE DEAN, REGINA CAMPUS
As I look back on the 2023-24 academic year for the Regina Campus, I want to express my gratitude to each member of the Regina team for your dedication to our learners and residents. I also want to thank our faculty members who continue to share their knowledge though teaching and mentoring our learners, residents and each other.
Over the course of 2023-24, we hired an 0.5 FTE Anatomy tech in 2024 for teaching support and further staffing model changes to support ongoing growth. On the programming side, one seat for PM&R was added in Regina, and a 5-year Emergency Medicine seat was introduced in July 2023. Anesthesia is set to start with two positions in July 2024, and one position in Dermatology will start at that same time. PM&R will have one position each year starting in July 2025.

Efforts to diversify the standardized patient (SP) pool have been successful, with over 100 SPs recruited, reflecting the diversity of the Regina patient population. The Indigenous Health curriculum was expanded, offering guest lectures, case studies, and community service learning projects. An Indigenous Coordinator role was created, and the Department of Indigenous Health was established in 2023. New electives focusing on Indigenous experiences were introduced, with high interest from Regina students. These initiatives aimed to create inclusive spaces and increase cultural awareness among staff and faculty. An Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committee started in June 2024, with terms of reference to reflect the goals of the Department of Social Accountability and members of staff, faculty, and students.
In research, the number of projects involving Regina-based faculty and students increased significantly, with 61 new studies in 2023. Initiatives included 10 successful research applications for $2.6 Million dollars in 2023. Undergraduate students had opportunities to participate in summer research projects, with several presenting their work at the College of Medicine Undergraduate Research Showcase. The focus on research support aimed to enhance faculty development and academic contributions.
In tracking the on-site lectures for the Pre-Clerkship programs with the addition of the Year 1 program, we are pleased to report a dramatic increase in the number of Regina Faculty presenting lectures and facilitating distributed educations sessions. In 2023-24, the number of sessions led by Regina based faciiltators increased from 14% to 25%. We have also seen a positive increase in the number of Regina faculty participants in the Orientation sessions for these new students. I would like to thank our faculty for this investment of their time and energy for these lectures and sessions. Thanks also to our rural faculty who are working to contribute to Regina based lectures, both virtually and in person.
In Fall 2023, our campus hosted the Class of 2027 White Coat ceremony at Conexus Arts Centre. The White Coat ceremony and ongoing social and wellbeing events organized by SMSS representatives continue to strengthen community ties. Our annual Appreciation Night saw growing attendance in 2024, and social media campaigns, particularly on Instagram, were active and engaging, promoting campus events and initiatives. These efforts help create a supportive and connected campus environment for both students and faculty.
Building on all the successes of our campus in 2023-24, a result of both individual and collaborative efforts by our faculty, learners, staff and partners, I look forward to all that is ahead of us and what the next year will bring.

We offer our sincere gratitude for the generosity of those who put their trust in us at the Regina Campus to carry out the mission and vision of the College of Medicine. The support of our partners and colleagues has been an incredible benefit to our students, faculty and staff, and to the College as a whole. Our appreciation is immeasurable.

Facilities
The Dilawri Simulation Centre
The Dilawri Simulation Centre (DSC) continues to be a highlight at all program levels on the Regina campus. The Centre has seen an increase in the demand for simulation as the Regina campus is now home to the anesthesia and Royal College emergency programs.

The Anatomy Lab
The Centre has also seen an increase in student interest groups and hosting self-directed learning sessions including areas such as POCUS, surgical skills, and orthopedics to name a few.
Due to the proximity to the rest of the hospital, the DSC also facilitates a number of simulations Insitu. Insitu simulations allow medical learners to work directly with nursing and allied healthcare teams in clinical care spaces.
Special care is taken to not interrupt patient care and is done in a quick and efficient manner to ensure a rich learning experience without taking away from clinical responsibilities. These cases are of benefit to all involved and aid in the seamless transfer of learning to the clinical environment.
To book a simulation session or to inquire about simulation opportunities in Regina, please contact the DSC via email at dilawri.simulationcentre@saskhealthauthority.ca.
The College of Medicine Regina Campus has its own Anatomy Lab that continues to be used to deliver content through cadaveric specimens and anatomical models to medical learners to meet the objectives of the Anatomy curriculum.
Access to the anatomy lab provides Regina students with the ability to gain clinical skills and hands-on learning.
The anatomy lab was officially completed before the start of the 2023-24 academic year.
The Anatomy lab and Level 1 expansion was possible due to the campaign for the College of Medicine Regina Campus expansion at Regina General Hospital. The campaign raised an incredible $400,000 thanks to the generosity of our donors and alumni, and matching donor, The Hospitals of Regina Foundation.

Regina Campus Update 2023-24
New Residency Program for the province to be based out of Regina
Following years of collaborating with other universities to train dermatology residents for Saskatchewan, the University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Medicine will welcome its first resident into its newly accredited dermatology program in July 2024.
“The new dermatology program lays a strong foundation to address health human resources in dermatology for our province,” said Dr. Anurag Saxena (MD), associate dean of Postgraduate Medical Education at the USask College of Medicine.
“It also enhances the academic rigor of the practice of dermatology for quality care. Residents in other programs and our undergraduate medical students have an opportunity for elective experiences in dermatology within our province.”
The program will primarily be centered at the College of Medicine’s Regina campus and led by Regina Division Head, Dr. Karen Holfeld (MD) as well as Assistant Professor in Dermatology, Dr. Brittany Waller (MD).
Dr. Gill White (MD), associate dean, Regina Campus, believes the new program will provide some excellent recruitment options and allows for building upon the programming already available in Regina.
“This is a great opportunity for our students to pursue specialization in dermatology and I have full confidence in the dermatologists currently in Regina and Saskatoon who will train the residents,” he said.
Dr. White echoed Dr. Saxena’s notion that the training program will provide Saskatchewan with more dermatologists, with many choosing to remain in the province to practice upon completion of their residency.
“We value the college and its commitment to advanced medical education and high-quality residency training in Saskatchewan,” Health Minister Everett Hindley said. “This residency training contributes to a key pillar of our Health Human Resources Action Plan to recruit, train, incentivize and retain in the ongoing efforts that help us build a strong and sustainable medical workforce in our province.”

The application process for the recently approved dermatology residency took about 6-8 months and is already set up for this year’s March Canadian Residency Matching Service match. There will be one postgraduate position available for the five-year program in 2024 with a second to be added going forward beginning in 2025.

Accreditation of College of Medicine programs - Postgraduate
Our programs and the PGME unit of the College of Medicine underwent a regular accreditation review by the accrediting bodies, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) in November, 2023. This included a review of the institution and its oversight of residency education, all active residency programs, and affiliated education sites.
Final results were shared with the CoM in May, 2024 and overall, the results were very positive. We will maintain our focus on continuous quality improvement and evidence-based decision-making as we continue through the accreditation cycle.
All programs are fully accredited, and 15 of the programs achieved the highest outcome possible of A-RR: accredited program with next review in 8 years.

Regina Campus Update 2023-24
THE IMPACT OF THE REGINA CAMPUS
Offer a Diverse and welcoming Campus Experience
Social Accountability, Diversity and Inclusivity
Simulated Patient Program
Simulated patients (SP's) are diverse and come from all walks of life. The Learning Centre’s Simulated Patient Program at the Regina General Hospital includes over 100 individuals, ranging in age from young children to the elderly. While current and retired healthcare professionals, teachers, and performers are well-represented in the SP pool, anyone has the potential to be a simulated patient.
As members of the University of Saskatchewan, we lead the way in role modelling and creating a welcoming and inclusive workplace. We are proud of the diversity of our faculty and staff, and we recognize that our university only grows stronger as we better reflect the province and society as a whole. We are committed to diversity and having a workforce that is representative of our community.
The Simulated Patient Program is committed to reflecting our diverse local community in the SP pool, to allow learners to meet individuals representative of those they will encounter during clinical rotations and future practice or other work environments.
With the continuation of outreach initiatives, the Regina Campus has broadened the diversity of the SP pool. In 2023-24, 17% of returning SP's declared they represent an ethnic group (non-Caucasian). There were 22 new SP's who signed up in that same year, with 28% declaring they represent a non-Causcasian ethnic group.
Campus-wide initiatives have been implemented to track SP demographic information to allow data collection and comparison between Campuses.

Regina Campus Learners
The College continues to strive towards having an incoming MD class that reflects the diversity of our province. Our Indigenous Admissions Pathway (IAP) is designed to support self-declared First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students from all over Canada to gain admission to Medicine. Our Diversity and Social Accountability Admissions Program provides applicants who have experienced a challenging socio-economic background an opportunity to enter the College.
In 2023-24, 88% of the Class of 2027 was from Saskatchewan, with 48% of those having attended high school in Regina. Of the 40 students in the class, almost half identified as a visible minority/radicalized person and three students self-declared as Indigenous.
The Indigenous Health curriculum was expanded, offering guest lectures, case studies, and community service learning projects. An Indigenous Coordinator role at the Regina Campus was created, and the Department of Indigenous Health was established in 2023. New electives focusing on Indigenous experiences were introduced, with high interest from Regina students. These initiatives aimed to create inclusive spaces and increase cultural awareness among staff and faculty.
In June 2024, an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committee started, with terms of reference that reflects the goals of the Department of Social Accountability and members of staff, faculty, and students.

Research Studies Initiated in 2023:
In 2023, 61 newly-initiated studies involved a Regina based physician as a PI or Co-I. We saw an increase in the number of projects that involved undergraduate learners from 15% in 2022 to 19% in 2023. The number of projects that included a postgraduate learner in 2023 remained consistent at 22%. Several initiatives were implemented this year to provide a foundation to increase the number of projects involving medical learners for the upcoming year.
Figure 1 illustrates the number of studies that were initiated in 2023.

Table 1 presents the distribution of the research across specialties, including the number of learners involved in the projects.
Of the specialties with the largest number of ongoing studies (Family Medicine, Cardiology, ObstetricsGynecology, Nephrology, Pediatrics, and Infectious Disease), there were learners (both undergraduate and postgraduate) involved in 44% to 83%. Therefore, AHS team is actively collaborating with various specialty areas to advocate for research among physicians and learners.
Additionally, we are establishing a vital link between learners and physicians, facilitating discussions on forthcoming research prospects.

Posters, Presentations and Manuscripts
This was a great year for research dissemination for the Regina-based physicians from the College of Medicine. With the increase in research funding and student engagement in 2023, we are well positioned to continue to focus on increasing our knowledge dissemination in various forms, including publications. Specifically, in 2023, five posters were presented and four oral presentations were given at local, national, and international conferences during the reporting period.
It was great for students as well as several posters were presented by the medical students at the 2023 College of Medicine Undergraduate Research Showcase. Furthermore, Regina-based physicians were among the lead authors, corresponding authors, and/or co-authors on 49 manuscripts published in 2023.
Research Funding Applications
In 2023, there were 10 successful funding applications that included a Regina-based physician resulting in a total of $2,600,177 awarded. Appendix A provides a list of the funding applications awarded in the 2023 calendar year. In 2023, there was a substantial rise of over $2 million compared to the previous year, predominantly attributed to physicians in Family Medicine. These garnered grants are poised to bolster research endeavors for many years to come and are aimed at elevating both the caliber and volume of research conducted on the Regina Campus. This includes grants to support physicians who oversee clinical trials, instigate investigator-initiated trials, and hire coordinators to ensure seamless operations of the studies.
Figure 2 below provides a summary of the sources for the funding. There was a notable shift in the source of funds in 2023, with 70% collectively constituted from Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF) and Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) as compared to 27% in 2022. Sources from externally funded grants, such as Hospitals of Regina Foundation (HRF), represent 30% of all attained grants, similar to 2022. However, there were no College of Medicine internally funded grants in 2023 which included a Regina-based physician as a PI or Co-I.

Regina Campus Library
The SHA Clinical Library provides access to unique clinical-based tools (available provincially) on its College of Medicine Regina Campus guide. The URL for this guide (and the rest of the Library’s website) was updated in early 2024.
The friendly and knowledgeable library staff can provide assistance in several areas, including helping with research projects, evidence searches, citation managers, accessing full-text articles, and more! Librarians also teach the Information Literacy classes in Regina and act as tutors in the Case-Based Learning sessions.
The Library’s Regina General Hospital branch (located on the lower level of RGH) provides space for students, clerks, and residents to meet, do research, and study. The guide on the website also provides a link to book the back study room. There is also a room at this branch for the College of Medicine Collection print titles which learners can access 24/7 with their security ID badges. In the spring of 2024, a small print book collection was also added to the 5th floor Resident Lounge at the Regina General Hospital.
The Regina General Hospital branch has 5 docking stations which allow students to plug in their laptops and have access to an additional monitor. They can also charge their phones with it. These have been very popular and more stations were added based on feedback from the students. The library branches at the Pasqua Hospital and the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre also offer additional study space and each have one docking station.
In April 2024, the Library created a new single registration form for all users, including College of Medicine learners. Registration provides access to the Library’s online resources using the learner’s NSID (the student university number) as their library card number. Registration also enters learners into the Library’s system for borrowing books.
