Regina Campus Update 2022-23

REGINA CAMPUS OVERVIEW

The College of Medicine – Regina Campus exists almost entirely within the Regina General Hospital.

The hospital-based medical school is one-of-a-kind in Canada and allows students to learn in the environment in which they will practice. In August 2022, 40 year 1 medical students started their undergraduate medical degrees based at the Regina Campus (representing 40% of the entry class for the College of Medicine). This cohort joined approximately 120 year 2 to 4 medical students currently studying Medicine in Regina.

The goal of the expansion plan is three fold; firstly, expand to avoid disruption of the transition of programming between campuses; secondly, to help attract more program applicants from southern Saskatchewan; and finally, to enhance the capacity for new medical students.

GROWING OUR CAMPUS

The training spaces at the College of Medicine Regina campus continue to be used extensively by medical students. Dedicated space exists in the Health Sciences Learning Center and is supplemented by the Dilawri Simulation Center as well as a Health Library.

A new classroom, study spaces and an anatomy lab have been added to the campus’s facilities to support the additional education and training requirements for the program.

The new anatomy lab, which opened in spring 2023, is the cornerstone of medical education. It will further enhance the high quality of training being delivered in Regina. Made possible through a partnership between Hospitals of Regina Foundation and the USask College of Medicine, the lab is part of a significant renovation and expansion to increase learning space and support medical education more fully in Regina. It has been outfitted with modern anatomy tools, equipment and IT, and is an important part of the medical school experience. Students will gain essential clinical skills and hands-on learning essential to their training.

Within the Regina General Hospital, an expansion took place to create the academic space required. Construction is now complete and includes:

• Classroom space;

• Prosected specimen Anatomy Lab;

• Additional meeting rooms;

• Office space for faculty or staff.

Completion of the Anatomy Lab involved further renovations, cabinets, anatomy models, storage tanks, tables, chairs, IT upgrades and installation and ventilation.

The Dilawri Simulation Centre (DSC), which celebrated its 10th anniversary in June 2022, allows for hands-on learning for medical students and allied health professionals. Students are able to train in an environment with life-like mannequins who react like live patients. It is also an area that gives medical teams the ability to practice their skills before interacting with actual patients in clinical and hospital settings.

At the DSC, health-care providers learn in an environment that realistically simulates a hospital setting. Each of the interactive mannequins replicate patient scenarios. The goal in developing the Centre was to accommodate this training but also to help attract and retain health care professionals, in all disciplines, here in southern Saskatchewan.

The College of Medicine Regina Campus in 2022-23 would like to see an increase in the diversity of our Standardized Patient (SP) population. Through new outreach initiatives, including the use of Social Media, the Regina Campus has broadened the diversity of the SP pool with 21% who have declared they represent an ethnic group (non-Caucasian).

New Campus-wide initiatives are being implemented to track SP demographic information to allow data collection and comparison between Campuses.

First-year students took part in an Indigenous culture workshop led by knowledge keeper and traditional games facilitator Lamarr Oksasikewiyin from Sweetgrass First Nation. Oksasikewiyin’s workshop combined history with traditional games that build skills in hand-eye coordination, lung capacity and core strength.

The workshop was organized by Amanda Crowe, Indigenous Coordinator, and JoLee Saskakamoose, Adjunct Professor, at the College of Medicine, Regina campus. Learning about Indigenous culture is a part of the MD curriculum.

The questionnaire is intended to be given to parents after their child meets with a medical learner and the feedback will be used to help students improve their skills when working with pediatric patients.

Kacie Kushniruk (Lower Left) - Kacie is a MD student who has been working in various research capacities throughout her academic career. She knew she wanted to complete a Dean’s Summer Project to round-out her med school experience. This summer, Kacie will work on a project that examines the the scope of practice of Community Mental Health Nurses (CMHNs) at Child and Youth Services (CYS)

in Regina with Dr. Petryk. The project involved surveying patients and their families to find out what aspects of the service are working well, and they have any ideas for enhancing existing mental health services by the CHMNs.

Dilpreet Bajwa (Lower Right) - Dilpreet's Dean’s Summer Research Project focused on the acceptance and utility of resident-run clinics in developmental pediatric clinics with guidance from Dr. Petryk to complete the project. After working on the project with Dr. Susan Petryk in the summer of 2022, Dilpreet presented it at the Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Dean's Summer Research Projects

Open to all first and second-year undergraduate medical students, the Dean’s Summer Research Projects program acts to facilitate exposure to scientific research, fostering skills that will be crucial throughout our students’ careers as medical professionals. The initiative is intended to ignite a passion for research, promoting an understanding of the vital role research plays in health care today.

Regina Campus Library

The SHA Library provides access to unique clinical-based tools (available provincially) on its College of Medicine Regina Campus guide.

The friendly and knowledgeable library staff can provide assistance in several areas, including helping with research papers, evidence searches, citation managers, full-text articles, and more!

The physical library on the lower level of the Regina General Hospital provides space for students, clerks, and residents to meet, do research, and study.

The guide also provides a link to book the study room and an automated list the College of Medicine Collection print titles.

Librarians teach the Information Literacy classes in Regina and act as tutors in the Case-based Learning sessions. They also provide assistance with research projects.

A new registration form for College of Medicine was launched at the summer orientations. Registration provides access to the SHA online resources using the learner’s NSID, the student university number. This eliminated the step where learners needed to request a library card number. Registration also enters learners into the Library’s system for borrowing books.
