CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT CURRICULUM FOR DOMESTIC WORKERS
ACKNOWLEDGMENT The PAKISTAN JOBS project is a USAID funded project designed to improve the competitiveness of the Pakistani economy by strengthening systems for workforce development, encourage Pakistani companies to invest in human capital, and improve access to training, jobs, and business opportunities, especially for youth and women. The four components are (1) Industry Sector-Led Technical Training; (2) Employability, Job Placement, and Entrepreneurship for Secondary School and University Graduates; (3) Integrated Work and Learning Program for Less-Educated Youth; and (4) Youth Employability Exchange Systems. USAID PAKISTAN JOBS project is working for the skill enhancement of the workforce in Pakistan in several growing economic sectors including agriculture, energy, engineering, construction, information technology, call centers, pharmaceuticals, garment manufacturing, carpet making, and fisheries. Preparation of standardized and tested curriculum is one of the major contributions of this project. Domestic help is not a formal segment of the services sector in Pakistan's economy yet this sector is a major employer in the country providing jobs to millions of women most of which are unskilled and not literate. Many households in upscale communities prefer employing foreign maids, because they are trained to work efficiently and effectively. The Domestic Help Training course focused on teaching key vocational skills to domestic maids from low income communities to increase their employment opportunities and potentially doubling their income. This 25 day training equipped these women to perform household activities more efficiently and to earn a substantial living to support their families. This curriculum covers aspects related to Personality Development, Work Management, Team Work & Coordination, Housekeeping, Cleaning, Baby Care, Child Care, Senior Care,Work Ethics, and Worker Rights. The USAID PAKISTAN JOBS project wishes to thank all the persons and organizations that contributed in many ways to the preparation of this curriculum. Special thanks are extended to Mr. Mohsin Aziz VP Professional Services, Mr. Javaid William CEO Faces Pakistan, Mrs. Raheela Shah and Mr. Awais Khan, who coordinated the preparation of this curriculum. Muhammad Jameel Hussain, Director Operations,Abt Associates Inc and Dr. Nazir Mahmood were also instrumental in the finalization of the syllabus.
