CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT CURRICULUM FOR SOFT SKILLS TRAINING INSTRUCTORS
ACKNOWLEDGMENT The PAKISTAN JOBS Project is a USAID funded project designed to improve the competitiveness of the Pakistani economy by strengthening systems for workforce development, encourage Pakistani companies to invest in human capital, and improve access to training, jobs, and business opportunities, especially for youth and women. The four components are (1) Industry Sector-Led Technical Training; (2) Employability, Job Placement, and Entrepreneurship for Secondary School and University Graduates; (3) Integrated Work and Learning Program for Less-Educated Youth; and (4) Youth Employability Exchange Systems. USAID PAKISTAN JOBS Project is working for the skill enhancement of the workforce in Pakistan in several growing economic sectors including agriculture, energy, construction, information technology, call centers, pharmaceuticals, garment manufacturing, carpet making, and fisheries. Preparation of standardized and tested curriculum is one of the major contributions of this project. The “Soft Skills” curriculum developed by JOBS International Private Limited (JIPL) and implemented at Sarhad University of Information & Technology (SUIT) helps students develop their “soft” employability skills in order to become more efficient and employable professionals. Soft skills are skills beyond the technical knowledge of a subject that influence the quality of professional interaction. Soft skills could include abilities such as effective communication, creativity, analytical thinking, diplomacy, flexibility, change-readiness, and problem solving, leadership, team building, and listening skills. This particular curriculum was developed by experienced HR specialists with additional input from the private sector and academia, and it covers four soft skills topics: Career Planning, CV Writing, Interview Skills and Professional Grooming. It is designed to equip students with the skills to determine their career choices, polish their professional strengths and successfully conduct their job search. The USAID PAKISTAN JOBS Project wishes to express its appreciation to individuals and organizations that contributed significantly in the finalization of this curriculum, including members of the JOBS International Private Limited (JIPL) team, Elli Takagaki, Shahbaz Saleem, Zarnigar Zahra and Stephanie Wong for graphic design elements. Special thanks are extended to Prof. Dr. Saleem Ur Rehman, Vice Chancellor, SUIT and Mr. Muhammad Nasir, Registrar, SUIT, for their unrelenting support and their vision to pioneer the implementation of the soft skills training program to support the development efforts to enhance the employability skills of youth in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
