CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT CURRICULUM FOR LIVESTOCK FARM WORKERS
ACKNOWLEDGMENT The PAKISTAN JOBS project is a USAID funded project designed to improve the competitiveness of the Pakistani economy by strengthening systems for workforce development, encourage Pakistani companies to invest in human capital, and improve access to training, jobs, and business opportunities, especially for youth and women. The four components are (1) Industry Sector-Led Technical Training; (2) Employability, Job Placement, and Entrepreneurship for Secondary School and University Graduates; (3) Integrated Work and Learning Program for Less-Educated Youth; and (4) Youth Employability Exchange Systems. USAID PAKISTAN JOBS project is working for the skill enhancement of the workforce in Pakistan in several growing economic sectors including agriculture, livestock, retail sales, energy, construction, information technology, call centers, pharmaceuticals, garment manufacturing, carpet making, and fisheries. Preparation of standardized and tested curriculum is one of the major contributions of this project. Livestock is one of the fast growing sectors of economy.Agriculture farmers having small holdings and landless laborers usually practice dairy farming in addition to crop cultivation. The major challenge is to upgrade small holding farmers by solving their productivity and farm management constraints and at the same time substantially increasing the number of commercial farms. Fast increasing commercial farms needs trained workers to look after the cows and buffalos using new approaches and technology. This curriculum was developed in close coordination with technical & management staff of Haleeb Foods.Although main focus of this curriculum is towards medium level farms however trained workers will be equally good for progressive small farms as well as commercial farms using latest technology. Since majority of workers engaged in livestock farming belong to the poor segment of rural population, as such imparting of skills for better maintenance of milking animals will increase employment opportunities for this group and will resultantly contribute for reduction of poverty. The USAID PAKISTAN JOBS project wishes to thank all the persons and organizations that contributed in many ways to the preparation of this curriculum. Thanks to Ilyas M. Chaudhry, Chairman, Haleeb Foods, for his vision to collaborate with USAID Pakistan Jobs for systematic training of livestock and Dr. Muhammad Zubair Ahmad General Manager Milk Collection & Agri Services and Suhail Noor, Manager HR - Field Operations for their support by sparing their professional staff for development of this curriculum. Special thanks are extended to Mr. Mohsin M. Syed, Chairman Hybrid Technics and Mr. Aftab Ahmad,Vocational Education Specialist who coordinated the preparation of this curriculum and provided guidance to the subject experts. The USAID PAKISTAN JOBS project wishes to express its appreciation to Dr. Ghulam Ahmad, Manager Agriservices and Dr. Abdul Ghafoor Jazib, Milk Development Officer, Haleeb Foods who contributed significantly for development of this curriculum as per demand of livestock farms. Muhammad Mukhtar Pasha, BTN Specialist and Dr. Nazir Mahmood, Curriculum Consultant for USAID PAKISTAN JOBS Project were also instrumental in the finalization of the syllabus.
